I study Jewish culture. I also have friends who are Jewish who explain things to me that you won't find in books. I told a friend of mine I when I was in the Netherlands I was visiting a museum with a Jewish Portuguese exhibition. They were discussing things about this and that. Then I got into a heated series of arguments. I asked my friend if this is usual among Jews. He made a statement I wish I would have written down. It was one of the best statements as to why Jews argue among themselves. In terms of argument, it seems to be a good way to practice debate for point and counter point.

@@MrBrashRooster Sir, your story is a good foundation for a book and a movie script. When I have the time I want to do research on the Yiddish theaters of New York city, and the Borsht Belt. I am wanting to understand the depths of humor and comedy. I have learned over time that many of the Jewish people have a unique approach to comedy and humor. It sort of reminds me of Russian Clowns. They are not the kind of Clowns as we know them. They are more like the Comedy Dell Arte of 17th century Italy. The word Clown is not what I am after. Clowns develop and stay with slapstick. The humor of Russian clowns and Jewish humor is a mix of subtle depth and mundane cynicism. This is what I have noticed. If you have more to add to this, please send it along.

Culture always has a strong influence. I have friends who are Jewish. They say things that make me laugh. They don't seem to realize that they are saying some very witty stuff. I am reminded of Krusty the Clown from the Simpson. He is a Clown who is Jewish. When he is trying to be funny, he is not funny. But when he is off camera, he is funny without trying to be funny. Girls, on average, get a growth spurt right around the age of 12 or so, which means that they're sometimes taller than boys their age. Boys keep growing until they're in their early 20s or so, so they get taller over time, but this is the one time where girls might have a height advantage over boys.

As one of my high school history teachers here in the US explained the first country the Nazis invaded was Germany. Most German citizens had not voted for the Nazis, even the election where Hitler became chancellor and was marked by a campaign of terror against opposing political parties, the Nazis still only won 43.9% of the vote. The German people were not nearly so unified behind the Nazis as we tend to portray them in US films, but when you don't allow anyone else to speak, it is easy to make it appear that everyone agrees with you.

This is how I feel as well. I do not blame the German people for wanting Hitler to rise to power. He promised them freedom when they were being oppressed. How can I, as an American, argue with that? This is the founding principle of our country. *We* went to war against Britain because we were tired of being mistreated. It only makes sense for Germany to do the same. Unfortunately, they were tricked. They were promised freedom and fairness, and they got a racist dictator. Not only was the entire country not all in agreement prior to the war, they would have been labeled as traitors and sent off to camps had they spoken out against them after the war started. I'm sure there were people who supported Hitler in the beginning who no longer did after they learned of the Holocaust, but there was no longer anything that they could do without risking their lives.
I separate the two groups entirely. Those who were on the inside and promoted the Holocaust I see as vile. I don't hold any ill will towards the people of Germany who simply wanted to fight for fair treatment and realized too late that they were tricked.

The Sephardim are from north Africa, customs are closer to ancient Israel. Many Askenaz, especially from Russia, preserve many ancient customs, but dress in late middle age thru 1800' rusian clothing. No one in Jerusalem ever dressed in big round fur hats. But it is their way to preserve old tradition. There are many sub- traditions depending on region, Hasid leader/ rabbi, in the Ultra, and reguler conservative, reformed, etc. groups even in the same locality of, for example, NYC. The oriental Jewish community is much different with some cental asia , iranian, turkish cultural elements. The west arab areas whence many sephardim come imo preserve the culture and attire of ancient Israel more closely. They are not Yiddish speaker ( Yiddish is based on an old German dialect with many aramaic and hebrew loan words). They use an old Spanish/ late vulgar spanish dialect called Ladino, now mostly foind in Turkey. They were expelled from Spain at the time of Columbus, going to Morroco. The Turkish sultan at the time heard about this well educated groups of skilled weavers, doctors, chemists, etc. and brought them to Istanbul. They are therestill, some are my friends and neighbors back when i lived there. They found my Spanish understandable. A merchant in the Covered Bazzar in Istanbul asked his little boy to fetch me a Coke. I had been chatting in Turkisj, but he spoke in Spanish with an odd accent. So i said to the boy " y quero muy frio joven por fsvor" - very cold please- and he stared at my blonde hair, blue eyes and handsome face - but i digress😁- and asked if i was Jewish. To learn more of the Askenaz ( old Hebrew / aramaic for europe ), read " The Joys of Yiddish" or tranlated stories by Shalom Aleikum ( a nom de plume). They have a rich and interesting culture and great subtle humor. In the Joys, you will find many words in english that are taken from Yiddish, btw. Mensch, toukus, schlrmiel, klutz, shtick, and so on. I am a former Lutheran pastor and now Greek Orthodox of Norwegian and Dano- Frisian descent btw. Just have a lot of Jewish friends.

Mizrahi Jews are referred to those who lived in Muslim countries, usually in the Middle East, there's no unique language to this demography, they pretty much spoke the local language. There are 'sub-types' such as Yemenite Jews, who have their own Synagogues because the way they pray is unique and so are their traditions..
And regarding traditions\customs, there's a thing called 'mi'beit aba' which can be lit. translated to "From your father's house", which means tranditions are passed from the father's side to his children (as in Ashkenazi father, for example, will pass on Ashkenazi traditions regardless of the mother's origin), and the concept that some traditions - like the fut hat, because they were traditions that were passed on by previous generations. I have no idea where the hats came from - if something happend in Europe and it forced the Jews there to pick this piece of clothing, but it doesn't violate any law of the religion so it's an accepted custom.. Some traditions are kept out of respect to the previous generations of the specific origin (because "dad knows what's best"), even if they're known to be irrelevant in current times - like different "types" of Jews refraining from eating different types of food during Passover, or some Jews not mixing milk products with fish products although it's not actually forbidden, it's a custom that was passed on and is still being followed - because that's how it was done for generations in one's "house" (previous generations \ lineage)

My wife and I would really like to see Chris watch and comment on Hogan's Heroes. While the show is over 50 years old, the humor is still razor-sharp. For many of us who grew up with that show, it provided a baseline for Americans' views of Germans (as inaccurate as it was). As a kid, I always thought of German people as bumbling fools like Kommandant Klink or Sergeant Schultz. What's remarkable was the fact many of the actors who portrayed German Army personnel were of the Jewish faith...and dealt with a lot of BS for playing these roles. Anyway, Chris could provide what would likely be a hysterical cross-generational analysis of German-American interaction.

I think in America Jewish doctors are assumed to be better than every one else. This comes from a period where Jewish people were banned from Universities and medical training in the USA. Jewish people unable to go to Saw Bones University New Jersey were forced to study abroad in Europe. In places like Edinburgh University, Le Sorbonne in Paris, Vienna and Heidelberg University. That is to say proper medical schools so consequently the hospitals set up by jewish people in the USA had better trained doctors. Saying your doctor was Jewish meant you had the money to get proper medical treatment.
In some parts of the USA it was until recently legal to ask the state government to recognise you as a doctor on the basis you had read some books and done alot of "medical stuff on real people". Americans also see osteopaths, homeopathy and chiropractors as "real" doctors with DR added to their names. But for some reason don't like calling dentists and vets doctors.

Also, the bit about the eye surgery plays on the stereotype that all Jewish mothers want their children to be doctors or lawyers. He had a wife named Muriel that looked exactly like him, but she was killed off.

The stereotype is that Jews usually choose to perform high paying jobs. Doctors, Lawyers, Dentists, Surgeons. Jobs where they can spend all their time earning money doing what they do and pay people to do the menial labor they don't want to do. For example stereotypically they would be a lawyer and pay the 10 year old from down the street to mow their lawn and handle landscaping chores because they themselves didn't really have time for it, or want to do it. Why do a job that is hard, that you aren't good at and doesn't pay at all because its for yourself, when you could work your $100 an hour job and pay someone else $10 an hour to do the stuff you don't want to do. You still end up taking home $90 per hour and the lawn still gets done. So it's definitely a smarter approach that even I use in my day to day life and probably most people would if they could afford it. But the stereotype is that whatever a Jewish person decides to do with their life, its going to make money.
