  • Two watch brands: one is founded half a century before the other, repeatedly obliterates accuracy competitions with clean sweeps and unbroken records, is selected by numerous global institutions to provide timekeeping-and the other is Rolex. With the five-pointed crown’s domination in this present era of watchmaking, it’s hard to believe that Rolex is, really, the new kid in town. Is it starting to show?

    I think the Globemaster is so criminally underrated in Omega's current lineup. It hardly gets mentioned and it's one of the nicest watches they make - discreet, loaded with heritage, and is a kind of "back to basics" watch from Omega.

    Excellent comparison. And though i'm a big fan of the Rolex Datejust 41mm, Omega makes the kill with the Globemaster. Omega wins here in many respects.

    A wonderful video as usual, and that Globemaster is, to me at least, a true competition for the Datejust, and although the Rolex will remain King in most people's eyes, I would choose the Omega in this case

      Actually there is compelling evidence that they did. Several astronauts on the Apollo missions wore Rolex watches. Go look it up. In any case, that's your yard stick? Rolls Royce never launched a car into space, but I think they make a decent car. Patek and AP have never been on the moon, last I checked they know how to put a watch together.

      I don't have a problem with Rolex apart from the image; it's just not me. They do make truly beautiful watches, but one wouldn't feel right on my wrist. I like Omega because they seem to me to be more subtle. However I am starting to covet the Tudor Black Bay :)

    Personally I like the Omega's design more. It's clean and subtle unlike the Rolex with the oversized markers. And the value proposition is just too good! For the price of that Rolex I picked up the anual calendar version of the Globemaster and I must say, the bigger face makes the watch even better looking!

    I'm looking to buy this exact Omega Globemaster. Although I have been looking at Rolex but finally decided on the Globemaster for 3 reasons: 1. I'm not a millionaire but indeed I can afford both but if I would to wear the Rolex many people will simply jump to the fake Rolex judgement. Howevere, with the Globemaster, you can't be mistaken (not with a top notch alligator leather band) which non of the fakes has. 2. It's not important to me the resale value as I don't ever think of selling my watches and may God well I will never have to. 3. Rolex is indeed make their own in-house movements, however, the finish is no different than Seiko or Tag. That's why you never see a Rolex with Crystal back. If you common customers saw the movement finish, it's game over for their marketing gimmick.

    • @manuel_winde
      @manuel_winde 4 года назад

      Rolex movements are better than Seiko and tag, the movement finish is not really an issue because they’re not highly decorated dress watches or complications. Who wants to see a 4r15 or a selitta sw200 through a case back? MYbe someone new to watches but for most of us we would prefer a top quality reliable movement like those in Rolexes, over off the shelf Sellita or seikos with poor accuracy (and a missaligned bezel and regain to boot).
      I’ve owned pretty much every Seiko from an skx009 and Seiko 5 field watch to a grand Seiko and modern Rolex is just better. Seiko is great but putting a display back on a pedestrian movement doesn’t make them better than Rolex.

      Nadie I’m afraid there’s some measure of truth to the knockoff comment. The original Globemaster from the 50s looked nothing like this, and the model ‘66 on which this 2015 re-release is based had a completely different case and fluted bezel. The model at hand simply reflects earlier Datejust models. And you will never be able to avoid comments like “is that a Rolex?”

There are also major problems in terms of actually being able to buy certain watches from the Rolex sports range which frustrate me. No wait lists or over inflated prices for an Omega.

    99.9 percent of people have literally zero idea of what makes a good watch. But nearly 100 percent of people know what a Rolex is. It's not just a watch, it's a watch for the rich and powerful. If you went to the poorest African village and asked what Coca Cola was they would tell you a drink. If you asked what a Rolex was they would tell you a watch. A watch worn by presidents and billionaires and dictators. It's a Rolex.
    So you can spend 5,000 on a watch that 1 percent MIGHT know is a nice watch or 6,000 on a watch that EVERYONE will know is a nice watch. You might not personally want the baggage that having a rich mans watch gives you (douchebag, bragger, doesn't know how to spend his money) but there will always be a market for Rolex. It's the king, it's the "best" in most people's eyes and because of that it will sell forever.

    • @AAAAATTTTTIIIIIFFFFF
      @AAAAATTTTTIIIIIFFFFF 5 лет назад +9

      it certainly is not the best. You cannot compare the quality of a watch by how many people know about it. i bet more people know about tags than rolex or casio for that matter that does not make those watches great. On the other hand very few people ll know about patek AP vacheron and brands like that. Watch should be bought based on the quality and craftsmanship and the legacy that the brand holds not on how many people know about the watch that i am wearing on my wrist.

      I actually know many rich people who don’t want one or own one. There are people who are rich and they may have one. I feel that many people who are not in that group of wealth prob go broke trying to obtain one or just buy a fake that is gutted and a generic movement is put in it with a real case because of past damage.

  • @calvinthomas3543
    @calvinthomas3543 6 лет назад +3

    Its all in the messaging - Its not enough to just create a great watch, you also need to be able to sell the idea to buyers. And Rolex takes the crown in that respect. Rolex has always had a uniform messaging about its simple watches. Omega on the other hand keeps changing its messaging and designs too frequently...One exception is the Moonwatch with a largely unchanged design and messaging, which is why it is such a bestseller.

    A watchmaker friend of mine used to say there are three stages when it comes to Rolex: First you like it cause it's prestigious and everyone knows it, then you hate it because you realize that there are more high end brands like patek and AP, and finally you have to admit that, besides their snobbish reputation, Rolex still make quite decent, well-built watches
    (but so does Omega)

    • @Mint-cb2vc

      I had slightly different 3 stages. Initially I disliked Rolex watches, found them boring and ugly. Then I got sucked into the hype, Instagram - how good Hulk looks in the pics, etc.. I had to buy it!!! But AD were empty, after putting my name on a list was told 1-2 years wait. Few weeks later at my next visit, I got told around 6 years wait (though a guy was taking a piss but I didn't want to create a conflict). At my last visit, a sales person told me wait up to 10 years, I just couldn't resist and started laughing. In 10 years it's possible to build a spaceship, there's no way someone will wait for a Rolex watch that long. She told me the demand is too high! So I asked how many Rolex watches do I need to buy in order to obtain it faster, as I know some people bough couple of watches to obtain desired sports model. Her reply was that it won't help, as one time they sold Rolex watches to one customer on 500K AUD$. Obviously I mentioned that it's most likely for a resale, as no person in their right mind would spend 500K on Rolex watches. Her reply was that their AD tries not to support grey market. Right ))) So after my last visit I realised, that I was bluntly gettinging lied in my eyes, at an AD shop. Why would I want to deal with people like that in the future?? Stage 3 was that I started to hate Rolex again and now I'm highly considering my second Omega watch, Globemaster.

    The Globemaster is highly underrated yet priced well. I would pick the Globemaster over the DateJust.

    I would put the Omega Aqua Terra as more of a direct competitor to the Datejust. The Globemaster is a little dressier. In fact, when I bought my Aqua Terra, it was between the AT and the Datejust. Both are great watches, but I prefer the look of the AT, and the >15,000 gauss technology. Like others here, I also like the more subtle profile of Omega brand.

    Is it me or the narration was a lot faster? Regardless, many prefer the globemaster out of the too because the datejust is just simply a bit bland. Better comparison: daytona vs. speedy.

  • @TimedSquare
    @TimedSquare 6 лет назад

    If would choose between the two, well... I wouldn't pick any. The Datejust is too big for my wrist and the hour markers are huge. The Globemaster kinda “apologizes” for being there with such delicate bezel and hands (and as such, is not a true competitor to the DJ2 for me). Now, I love the clean, simple style of these dials and waches. But I would just go for a 36mm Datejust or Oyster Perpetual. From a stylistic point of view, they beat the Datejust and Globemaster in this video. At least, for now :)

    I love fluted bezel. I have one that is built and preserved inside the glass case. It's zaratsu polished, and, so are the hands and indices. They still glitters after more than 50 years. It's the 37.5mm 7619 7060 Sportsmatic. I also have the 7619 9060 which has lume hands and indices like the omega and rolex, only that, again, they are zaratsu polished. And, yes, they are Seiko 5, but, very high class ones. I bought them for less than $200 a piece in excellent condition. You don't have to pay a lot of money for a nice watch.

    Putting aside the snobbish spirit imprinted in peoples mind about rolex (reason why some love it and some hate it), i personally like the datejust more. The globemaster doesnt look like an omega, it looks like a datejust. If it didnt say “omega” in the dial, and instead it said something like “pierre phidelis” ...we would all probably call this watch a rolex datejust homage. I would definetly go for the datejust and then buy another omega, maybe a speedmaster. Two classics with tremendous history and must haves in a collection.

    I was seriously considering a datejust 41, but now I’m seriously considering a globemaster. Actually, I recently went to a local retailer that carries both of these brands. The old sales guy didn’t even know what the globemaster was! Of course he was more than familiar with the datejust. 🤦🏻‍♀️ He just wanted to talk about Rolex and Patek.

    Love both brands . The problem with Rolex is when you open the steelcase (nothing to write home about, but built like a tank) while the Omega shows its innards proudly (that in itself says something ) . Rolex is timeless (which can be a bad thing ) , while Omega has too much on its plate. I just think Rolex is not worth what it offers (not a hater. i have an Explorer 2, and a Dytona and also own a Seamaster and a Constellation) . Instead of looking at another Rolex i find myself looking at other brands like GO (which i got recently) , and JLC (for example ) . BTW i don't care for resale as i get a watch that i like and use , and not to take care for the next person .

    Master chronometer and certification from METAS and cosc gives Omega tremendous value in any price segment
    But the love it or hate it Cyclops love it or hate it fluted bezel. Both of them I personally love in the datejust and not to mention the optional jubilee bracelet justifies the high value of the Rolex datejust.
    Although my choice would be a Rolex datejust and a Omega seamaster the new ceramic bezel.getting best of the two world's.

    Another great video! Thanks for posting. I wanted to like the Omega, but overall it left me flat. At 4:14 that Rolex bezel between 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock has some imperfections that appear unrelated to wear to me. Omega really only wants $100 additional for the steel bracelet for this watch? That seems about $900+ less than expected. I bet they won't sell one at the boutique for that price!
