Since a very young age, I’ve known what “Rolex” meant and what they sold. I can’t even remember where I heard the word “Rolex”. Now at the age of 20, I’ve finally acquired a beautiful 1601 from 1969.
I’m female and have two Datejusts. I have the 18k gold with champagne dial and diamond markers and the two toned with a white dial and diamond markers. I grew up with nothing and could only afford Timex. So, now, I have what I always wanted.
Great video. I bought a brand new Datejust in 1999. I had to sell it when the financial crash of 2008 happened. It wasn't a painstaking decision because, I wasn't really a watch guy. It wasn't until 2010 when I started to miss it. Badly. I'd saved enough for a vintage 1601 and bought it. I still have that watch and will never ever let it go. It represented something to me far greater than merely a watch.
Excellent video and enjoyed it very much! The new 126234 36mm with a blue dial and Jubilee is my grail watch. Great to be able to watch your shows and appreciate them even more during these challenging times.
That intro must have taken you ages! I have nothing but respect for your creative talent and commitment to your craft. Also you managed to squeeze all the things I love (watches, art, Jazz, comedy and film) into a 15 minute video! Speaking about the watches in Die Hard, I have the Tag Heuer 2000 Quartz Professional Chronograph from Die Hard 2. It is the watch that all the villains wear. I don’t know what that says about me… but I am going to gift it to my brother as it is his birthday next month. If he watches this video I have just ruined his surprise. Can’t wait for your next upload my friend.
I always had this idea that the Datejust is always the perfect first luxury watch to start a collection, after watching this video i can't but agree that this watch is immortal in many ways and will definetly be my first addition ! Thank you sir !
I love my Datejust model 16233. It’s fitted with a jubilee bracelet and a grey tapestry dial. When I first showed the watch to my Dad he promptly went out and purchased one for himself as he liked the watch so much. Glad you managed to wear a bit of Stone Island in your introduction!
I agree They would complement each other well, last a life time, you could hand them down, and they retain a relatively good amount of value. Id like to eventually add both to my collection
Just in the process of purchasing a 1987 18ct bi metal vintage date just it has a class and use ability that is hard to find in other watches for the price . Good to see you looking well keep up the good work all the best from the uk .
Hi TGV, great video as always. I have a datejust 36 in blue! Pulled the trigger last year after much thought. Great “do it all watch” pure class in every situation. Keep up the good work old boy! Cliff, UK
Will be glad to get your views on the size.. My wrist is over 7 inches and I still feel the proportion of a 36mm is perfect and true to its ancestory.. I really am not sure about the 41.
I have had my Datejust 41, 18k white gold fluted bezel, silver dial non numeral sticks on a jubilee bracelet for about 2 months now and I haven’t taken it off.... I love it.
Great video! This past year I bought the Rolex 16233 American Psycho watch with Champagne Tapestry dial from Bob’s watches and then the new Rolex Datejust 36 steel and white gold New from Tourneau. Love them both! I have to admit I love them more than my AP Royal Oak 15400.
I got my 2 tone t-prefix back in January as I coveted your Day Date so badly! I bought mine practically unworn from a pawn shop for $2500! 3135, Sapphire, and champagne dial. I adore the Jubilee bracelet.
You work so hard on all of your videos (which is so obvious) so thank you! You are definitely a huge contributor in me getting into watches! Keep up the good work!
My dad has passed down his 16030 Buckley Dial from the early 80's to me. It is just pure class and I will cherish this beautiful timepiece for generations to come. Great video TGV, love your content. Greetings from Germany.
After a ten year watch journey I finally have my sights set on Rolex ,and most assuredly a 36 mm Datejust.TGV that blue Datejust with the romans was so classic !
OMG! thank you so much for the Churchill impression. I immediately burst out with an involuntary and genuine laugh. I think far too few of us have enjoyed a really good laugh lately, so I sincerely thank you.
As I'm sure others have already pointed out Christian Bale's character in American Psycho is not wearing a Datejust, the producers approached Rolex during production and the company refused to allow them permission to use a Rolex during filming. This is why in the scene with the two hookers in bed, the main character says "Don't touch the watch!", and not "Don't touch the Rolex!" as it is written in the original book upon which the movie is based. In actual fact during the movie Christain Bale is wearing a two-tone Seiko 5 SNXJ90. The RUclipsr "The Timekeeper" has done a detailed video about this.
Watching this wearing my DJ41 black dial. Owned it for 3 years and still love it as much as when I first bought it. Looks good with a suit and with jeans and t-shirt.
I'm so glad you did a video on the datejust. Especially since i've been falling in love with them. Also love intro wardrobe montage. You do a great job on these videos and I can ( and have) watched these all day. :)
Another great video. Absolutely loved the intro (and the rest of the video). Recently pulled the trigger on a midsize Seamaster 300m as my first luxury piece. The DJ is definitely next!
The Urban Gentry i have one as you can see😅 and its a perfekt classy/sporty daily watch. 40mm is a ideal size for everyday wear and for my smaller wrist size! the look is also not so in the face! very under the radar and neutral looking
Nice one TGV. Love this channel. Coincidentally my first Rolex arrived this week. After watching several reviews decided for a 1988 Datejust 16013 36mm.
I got my first luxury watch a few months ago (Tudor Black Bay 58), and I am looking for a 1988 version of a DJ (Blue or Linen dial are my favourite ones i have seen) - 1988 is my birth year :)
Great video and good choice. Just picked up a 126234 (fluted, jubilee, blue dial) and love it. These days though hard to find anything from Rolex at value. As you said above, hard not to love a pre-owned SMP 300M for
I really, really admire the understanding how its not only about the piece, but the stories it enables to be left told around it, culture. Personally would go with the black ’19 36mm with 32-movement.
I’ve owned 5 Datejust’s and I’ve finally settled on a keeper. A mint one owner sunburst gray dial 16014. It’s just superb and rises above all of my other watches to include my Submariner.
An absolute classic. I’ve had my stainless black dial with sticks on an oyster with fluted bezel for almost a year now 126334. Sporty. Dressy. As stated, it does it all !!! Excellent video.
Hi TGV. Just wanted to say I love the channel. I have looked at other channels by a few different watch enthusiasts and as good as they are, in my opinion yours is definitely the best. I love your passion and enthusiasm, not just for watches and horology in general, but for inspiring new people into the hobby, including myself, so a big thank you sir and keep up the good work. Stay safe and keep healthy. All the best from Bournemouth, UK 👍🏻.
Thank you Lee, you are very kind. I love your attitude, it speaks volumes about you sir! Stay safe too and enjoy the horological journey. Best regards, TGV
@@theurbangentry You're very welcome sir. One day I will be in a position to buy my first Rolex with pride, and it's thanks to you for encouraging me to go on this journey. By the way, my wristwatch check for today is the Casio F-91W. Take care and speak soon 😊.
Fantastic video, TGV, many thanks for the pleasure. I'm 15 and very into horology - I hope to be able to collect watches later in my life. I have been subscribed for over a year now and have always found your videos informative and useful. Many thanks again.
Ok Urban Gentry, my goal is to find two classic timepieces that I will enjoy, but are iconic and timeless enough that I can leave them to my two boys after I slip into the void. No immediate rush, but I'm 51. I'd like to do this in the next decade or so. The pieces don't need to be $10k or more, they could be $5k, but they need to be something special. I'm fairly new to watch collecting. I've always loved them. I've learned a lot from you. What would you recommend for someone in my position with this unique requirement? Not sure if it helps, but my boys are raised in Georgia and (youngest) Florida. Both are half Korean and half American. Both are brilliant and a dad couldn't be prouder of two sons.
TGV, great video. I purchased a vintage circa 1975 DJ last August. It's a beautiful time piece. Mine has the grey sigma dial, which has the white gold hands. The 1570 caliber is a great performer considering it's age. This video does well to reinforce my feelings about this style Rolex, especially because there is so much hype pushing the sport style watches (of which I have several). Thank you for such an informative special on an iconic watch. When I wear mine, I feel special and appreciative of the fact that I actually own one.
I bought a 2 tone Datejust in 2000. Jubilee, fluted bezel and a white Buckley dial. It was absolutely beautiful. I wound up selling it a couple years later because it was just too dressy for what I wore and I felt like it was being under used. Of course, now I wish I had it back....
Oh my gosh the DJ is the watch to beat ! The one watch there was no shortage of at wash.u. in st.louis,mo and McGill U. Was this watch student and faculty. Terrific !
I have a 70s Date ref 1500, matte black dial, smooth bezel, all steel. At 34mm (just nice for my small wrist) and without the fluted dial it's not immediately obvious that it's a Rolex giving it an understated elegance!
I’m currently saving for my first luxury watch. Keeping a very close eye on the Grand Seiko Snowflake. I absolutely love the face and sweep of that watch
Puuuurple Rain, Purple Rain!!!! Thanks TGV. I know I am going to be humming that all night! Hope you are well. Always love the videos. I love my 2019 36mm Datejust. It is a watch I come back to after not wearing it for a while and am so glad I own it. I am fortunate. Ok, be well. --Michael
