Shopping List for How to Repair a Leaky Kitchen Faucet:
- Rubber seats and springs
- Rubber gasket and cam cap
- Ceramic cartridge, to repair a ceramic-cartridge faucet if you have one
Tools List for How to Repair a Leaky Kitchen Faucet:
- Hex-hey wrench, to loosen the hex-head screw
- Pocketknife or narrow-blade screwdriver, to extract faucet parts
- Sharpened pencil, to install new seats and springs
- Spanner wrench
Steps for How to Repair a Leaky Kitchen Faucet:
1. Close the hot- and cold-water shutoff valves under the kitchen sink.
2. Place a rag over the sink drain to catch any dropped parts.
3. Use a pocketknife to pry off the small index cover from the side of the faucet to reveal the hex-head screw.
4. Loosen the screw with the hex-key wrench and pull off the faucet handle.
5. Use the spanner wrench that came with the faucet to loosen and remove top cap assembly.
6. Pull straight up to remove the stainless-steel ball from the faucet body.
7. Use a pocketknife to extract the rubber seats and springs from inside the faucet.
8. Slip a new spring and rubber seat onto the tip of a pencil and lower it down into the faucet. Repeat to install the remaining seat and spring.
9. Reinstall the stainless-steel ball, making sure to align its keyway with the corresponding tab inside the faucet body.
10. On top of the stainless-steel ball install a new rubber gasket and cam cap. Align the keyway on the cap with the corresponding slot to ensure proper alignment.
11. Hand-tighten the top cap assembly back onto the faucet.
12. Open the two shutoff valves under the sink.
13. Use the spanner wrench to tighten the nut to provide the proper tension against the stainless-steel ball.
14. Reinstall the faucet handle, tighten the hex-head screw and then press on the index cover.
15. If your faucet doesn't have a stainless-steel ball, it's likely a ceramic-cartridge faucet. To repair the leak, simply remove the handle, pull out the ceramic cartridge and replace it with a new cartridge.

I’ve been plumbing for 9 years, replaced probably hundreds of delta seats and springs. I’ve never realized what that little tool was for, thanks Richard!
Most useful RUclips video I have ever watched. Our forever leaking sink is no longer leaking!
Oh My Goodness, this video makes the repair so easy because i have the exact faucet!
This was just what I needed to repair a faucet in my house. Richard, as usual, made the process simple and understandable. Repair was quick, easy and the faucet works perfectly. Thanks, Richard!
And in this Video Richard's favourite word is full city water pressure
You the Man Richard best instructional videos are always by Richard.
This Old House, thank you so much for all your videos. You’ve helped me so much since I purchased my first home.
This got her soaking wet
"Full City Water Pressure" the new name for my friday night bowling team.
This is the only video that helped me change my Delta faucet. Great details
I love this show...Thanks guys for sharing all your skills....Bravo
Amazing video with superb instructions.
Me waiting for him to say “full city water pressure”
2:24 :yup thats it
0:48 excellent camera work and wife is doing a good job staying quiet and posing
she sounded really satisfied and nice during and after the work
Thanks for passing on your knowledge another job completed
These guys always have great information!
Great video! I just fixed the leak!
Love how the best tool is a #2 pencil:)
Just the right detail in the instructions. He pointed out small things I did not know that the video with more ratings (Mil.+) did not. I like this one better. I called Delta and they sent a complete washer/spring kit FOR FREE. Then a week later they accidently sent two more. As these ORIGINALS lasted 25+ years, the next home owner will have two kits for the next 50 years. Delta rules, man !!!
I have replaced these parts on my faucet several times. I always watch this video before I start.
You saved me! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I've replaced those rubber seats and springs annually on a bathroom faucet. They need to come up with a more durable design for that type of system.
Great video
Excellent video, thank you very much !!!!!!!!
Very helpful help thanks.
I would have checked her for leaks while I was already there working . . . wow what a stunner . . .
Take a drink every time Richard says "Full City Water Pressure". Just kidding, don't die
lollol
Pretty sure there is a regulator.
At least in Canada we put them in every house.
I was just thinking that
I'm on another TOH marathon and came into the comments to make this joke and find I made it half a decade ago already. I think I watch too much youtube
Liked the pencil idea cheers
The black part on the bottom of the ceramic cartridge has a smiley face
buena esplicacion.
I always thought Richard would make a great substitute host in the event that Kevin was unable to make a show. He has a great personality and a versatile knowledge among many subjects.
Yep rich is a legend
Always replace both rubber seats and both the springs. They are cheap and if your in there just replace it all. Also add some faucet grease to top of rubber seats and all moving parts before putting back together. Little grease on the threads don’t hurt either.
I like your glasses. Where did get them? I'm changing a faucet like your dem on the wooden box. Need to view different vid. This helped.
Thank you for the help so I can try to fix my own faucet.
had no idea about ball valves, turns out my own kitchen faucet has a ball valve and not a cartridge, thanks for the info
Those cartridges look awesome. I need to upgrade the kitchen faucet now.
I think my kitchen & bath faucets are about 35 years old and still working great.
thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.
Delta will send the repair kit under it's lifetime warranty in about 4 days first class mail. Should be fine for another 10-15 years depending on mineral and sand content.
Recommend a high pressure whole house water sediment filter after the water meter.
Get da ball out to get to the holes n check em to get to da springs
Remember when u put da ball back it gots to line up right
CAMM assembly?? Block the water and #limit the sprout movement
U can adjust tension of ball like #sensitiviry in cod if u tighten or lossen the thing holding it cam assembly
Please! where to buy Richard's behind head glasses frame holder?? What are they called? Great way to keep glasses on when the sweat starts flowing.
Wow nice 👍🏻
Hello. Just came across this video. Looks easy enough.
I need to fix mine as it is leaking in that area. However, I saw the all screw, but does anyone know what size it is? I've tried to shoved different allen wrench and it won't fit. The screw screws worn out which is odd.
Thanks.
does anyone have any suggestions I have a Delta Diamond cartridge single faucet sink that won't shut off properly I've tried everything to remove the brass nut my father-in-law that used a 20 inch pipe wrench with a lot of Leverage and no go I was thinking there it sees because of hard water is it time to just replace the sink and isn't that old and the cartridge is a lot cheaper and Home Depot it's about $28 before tax any advice is welcome to the preciate it thank you
Is this a Delta faucet? I have been using Delta for many years, and what I have are the ones with a cam assembly that has a circular spring in it, the spring presses a small thin plastic piece(formed a special shape) towards the stainless steel ball to keep the water shut. The small plastic piece fails every so often.
I wonder is your style cam assembly compatible with what I just described? If yes, then I would ask where can I buy your style cam assembly as it looks a lot more durable?
FULL CITY WATER PRESSURE!!
It's got a smiley face.
A good cheap fix. Delta gets an A for both cheap and easy.
My man!
Full city water pressure did a split album with Rick James in 1979
By the time my faucets would leak they were ready to replace anyway. My kitchen faucet lasted 25 years and never leaked. I finally replaced it because it had low water flow and was getting ugly. My bathroom sink faucet is also nearly 25 years old and has never leaked.
I've never violated a housewife before today. Richard made it easy to understand the lead-in followed by the angle of penetration. Needless to say I won't need to follow up.
Can you suggest , that Black rubber (washer) how we can increase his built quality so it can work long time in faucet 😀
Richard’s favorite words: “Full city water pressure”
“Tension”
"Cutaway right here"
Our Kohler Ceramic Valve faucet did not leak at the faucet spout but along its side of the main body of the faucet. Issue was O Rings. Since Kohler likes these why cant the body have some type of seal that is not rubber? And why does water get in there is supposed too? Thanks
I did it all and couldn't pot off the top part of the faucet. It seems still connected somehow. Help. Can't get it off.
It seems like in all these Rich Trethewey videos, there's always a hot chick waiting in the kitchen for Rich to help them with their pipes.
Great video. If the rubber seals look good could the springs cause a leaky faucet also? Thanks.
If they are not providing the right pressur on the seats it could cause leaking.
What do you call a high five and handshake all together?... it's a high shake hot wife edition 😂 best tutorial btw.
Richard "full city water pressure" trethewey strikes again.
What about faucets that don't have that oval part to pry off at 00:34, and have no visible way to access an allen head?
Thank God for this video..........bloody plumbers these days cost are expensive
What is the name of the kit?
Putting your parts over the drain is a good way to have your parts FALL INTO THE DRAIN.
Who hired this guy lol?
does anyone how get this spanner wrench that Richard is using I have look every where! every one is telling that spanner wrench has been discontinued
What if all I have is a #3 pencil? 😂
Rich is right; "you want it tight, you don't want it sloppy".
8/10 would bang
My faucet just like the one you fixed is leaking from the neck of the faucet. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.
There’s also an O-ring that will need replacement from time to time.
Take a look at this video, around 4:25 ruclips.net/video/AipEYoYiIhc/видео.html
I always use silicon grease on all rubber & gaskets before reassembling . . .
I would buy food grade grease or oil for portable water lines
Welcome to This NEW House. That grid rack alone cost more than the faucet I have.
I just purchased a Delta Kitchen Faucet. These rubber seals (Hot/Cold) are bad? Less time I even have it? How can this go so belly up? I have to pay again for a damaged Kitchen Faucet? How embarrassing for Delta and Me the buyer of these Products. What to do Richard.? Thank You!🔧
This is the hot house wife series ?
Chaud is French for hot. So this Francois Michaud pseudonym translated pretty much as, "Frankly I'm hot." Very funny if I was 12. Like the jazz music critic / comedian said of 4-star generals with jackets covered with medals, "That would be really impressive if I was a 12-year old."
You can only get on this show if you have a hot wife. Imagine all the free things you can get if you have a decent wife. I think it goes something like this:
"Hi This Old House, I"m a big fan and we need a repair"
"Ok, do you have a hot wife?"
"Yes"
"We'll be right over"
Alternate:
"Hi This Old House, I"m a big fan and we need a repair"
"Ok, do you have a hot wife?"
"No"
"We don't run a charity here bud"
Some of these wifes are pretty hot.
@@johnames6430 Homeowners are still contracted by the network to pay a percentage of the work being performed. If they did, the show wouldn't exist. 😂😂😂
I have same unit, how can I increase the pressure when I use it. Coming out the spout it is alot stronger
Where was it leaking from?
You want it to have alittle tension you don't want it to be sloppy
What about a leak from the the stem/spout of dual supply kitchen faucet. Don't see anyone showing how to remove the nut/spout from the center where it leaks and how to replace. The hot and cold handles aren't leaking. I'm trying to figure it out for an old Chicago Faucet.
You best bet is to replace the whole faucet. With the new connections, they are leak free.
Except that's very expensive. Chicago Faucet is a high-quality brand. It maybe necessary to replace the washers in the handles, but if the spout is leaking from the nut area, there's obviously a need for a new washer or something there. May end having to get a new faucet to stop the problem, but am hoping for a much cheaper fix.
A # 2 pencil is the best tool? haha. A #3 or #4 pencil would work just as well! :)
OK, that shirt has to ride up more...maybe lose the belt and I'll believe you. LOL
Hi how I may contact you
smiley face ceramic
But they will last a long time. I don't know why this other crap is in use in America.
Ceramic cartridges were invented in the USA in the 1940s by Alfred M. Moen. I've got faucets with ceramic cartridges installed here that are more than 20 years old. No dripping.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_M._Moen
Same reason as car wipers, so they can sell you more

I'm guessing I can't retro fit a new ceramic canister style to an older steel ball style?
Probably not without a LOT of work. You're better off swapping out the whole faucet
I’m stuck at step one, the set screw is rusted on and the Allen head is stripped 😢
how much did he charge?
A good OLD fashion ;)
What if after you replace the seats and the spring you’re still having a leak
The information is sound but I cant get the O rings anywhere in Jamaica
Still have a leak even after I put a complete new faucet... Why?
how do you remove cartridge?
please help been trying to remove since yesterday
Two years later, are you still trying?
6:43
It’s a smiley face emoji
I can't fix my because to turn off the thing under the sink I would have to remove the dishwasher because the knob is too close and the space is way small
You could just turn the water off to your entire house lol.
Ackeeba Simms You could see if you can remove the handle (either a nut or a screw) and use a crescent wrench or vise grips to turn it off. Just reverse the steps to turn it back on and reinstall the handle.
That handshake/high five was so awkward it was painful to watch

I have definitely done this before. And immediately wanted to cut off my arms and never see them again.
I believe that Delta warrants all their products for life to the original purchaser, so free replacement parts are just a 800 number away. :) Dave
I know a plumber who told me that he keeps lots of Delta parts on his truck cause they're always breaking. Personally, I would only buy Moen.
This guy is pro......u can tell he paid his dues...must b a union employee back in the days.
No need to press the handle that hard , just push till the water stops and presto the water magically stops running.
"underneath, there's a ball assembly right here, and this tool also has a spanner wrench that'll allow me to loosen some of the tension."
best pick up line
Well...you get "full City pressure" if and only if you don't have a pressure regulator between the City supply line and where the water enters the house. That may drop it to half from when it left the City supply line and just before it enters your house. We have a City-supplied water pressure at 100 psi, but that is knocked down to 50 psi after it leaves the pressure regulator. Apparently, not all houses have one, so check your incoming water lines for evidence of it. You can call the DWP to ask what the street pressure is in your neighborhood, then buy an inexpensive pressure gauge to measure what it is from a hose bib before entering your house. Lower pressure, under this arrangement, is a good thing. It can protect pipes from excessive line pressure that would otherwise be present 24/7. It will minimize pipes from slamming when valves are opened and closed (like when your clothes washer is running), which may eventually cause leaks or pipe failure if left unchecked. If you need to install a pressure reducer, you can go to a plumbing supply and buy one to install. If you aren't able to install it yourself, you can have a plumber install one for you.
Sounds like the new model mentioned at the end of the video is the fix for this poor Delta design. Note this was from 2015. It's now 2021 and if you go to Delta's website for one of their models that has this new cartridge, you'll see a lot of unhappy customer reviews - www.deltafaucet.com/kitchen/product/155-RB-DST.html I called Delta today and I will give them credit for great customer service. They're sending a new replacement part that will hopefully fix the drip. To sum it up, this is a poorly design cartridge that keeps needing to be fixed/replaced. We're not going to buy Delta faucets again.
I bet you never seen a faucet like this
At 2:14, she got a kick out of something that happened.
She probably spotted his wood
i keep praying one day i'll get to fix the sink of a lady who looks like her but its always old people with oxygen tanks
lol
