I’m not studying philosophy or an actor, I’m just a regular guy who loves the ancient world. It breaks my heart we lost so much knowledge. I have read the 7 surviving plays of Sophocles on my own. I did it because I took a philosophy class in college and heard about Oedipus Rex. My favorite of course is Antigone, it has stayed with me since I read it 20 years ago. She was loyal to the end! All the plays were great. I was happy to see Odysseus show up in Ajax.
First! Love Sophocles and so glad you’re covering him! “Antigone” and “Electra” are some of my favorite of the ancient plays! I always find it kind of interesting and sad that we have a playwright such as Sophocles, who was immensely popular, yet only a fragment of his works survive.
@@MoAnInc I honestly can’t decide whose “Electra” play I like better, Sophocles or Euripedes! (Although in terms of overall work, Euripedes wins. His “Trojan Women” & “Medea” are also favorites. Particularly the Neil Curry translations).
as much as we have that is rich and good, just imagine if all of his plays had survived. this is a perennial thought when we think of the ancient world. the richness lost to us, but still enough richness remains
That " Triangalate " is such a tremendous idea. It reminds me of ? perhaps the shift in perspective in art and the renisance. It's so hard to shift from two dimensional thinking and introversion and imagination into three dimensions of life for me. I Hope to work and study harder as a result. Thank You!!!
I love Sophocles! One of my favorite plays is Ajax, if you could cover it that would be wonderful :) Also, maybe a fun idea would be, doing an Euripides biography followed by a videos about Frogs.

I know this video was posted a month ago but what sources are good and helpful that I can use to find more about Sophocles? I’m writing an essay and as you mentioned, there really isn’t much of an autobiography of him. 😅
Thank for all your videos! Can I ask if there is some kind of list of ancient classic books I can follow? I never went to highschool in my country Sweden so I missed out on more 'advanced' reading. Anyway wanted to start reading all or atleast attempt reading the greatest ancient classics since I love history! Is there somewhere to start? Should I begin with The Odyssey? The Illiad? I do find it difficult reading long books and prefer shorter ones. Is there any good classics that aren't that immense and that I might finish rather quick? (To get my mind used to it and then move on to the bigger ones.) Thank for your videos!😊
I thought Prometheus bound was psuedo asiclus because its about personal morality of pride as opposed to all his other surviving plays about public morals but truly dont know
Reading Sophocles' quotes four centuries before the disputed birth of Christ, we can assume there is literally nothing "new" in the Bible as of the time the New Testament was written. It's all rewording of Greek phlosophy and literature. "There is nothing new under the son."

Sophocles overlapped the end of Aeschylus's career and Euripides overlapped the end of Sophocles.
Sophocles was declared a "Heros" and threw that deified after his death (hes practically a lesser god).

You can start by reading any Greek tragedy from Aeschylus Sophocles or Euripides and you can finish any of them in a couple hours
