  • Very excited to have had the chance to bring Tim Whitmarsh, author of "Battling The Gods, Atheism In The Ancient World" onto the channel today! Tim and I dove into all things ancient religion for this chat, including how he was introduced to the topic of atheism, the pre Socratics, and Rome's notorious emperors. I'd like to give a huge thank you to Tim for taking the time to sit and chat to me about this incredibly complex topic!!!

Thank you both very interesting presentation. Something random though, for the self-proclaimed intuitively atheist professor Tim, Timothy, Τιμόθεος... I am sure I don't need to translate it or point out the irony.

The word 'atheist' in English also developed in meaning, and to begin with did not necessarily have the modern sense of denying that any gods exist.
In the 17th Century, in 'Paradise Lost', Milton describes the rebel angel Satan, who is expelled from Heaven after leading a rebellion against God, as an 'atheist'. Satan certainly does not deny that God exists, but treats Him as an enemy and refuses to worship Him. Thus 'atheist' means rejecting God rather than denying His existence. That is close to the original meaning of the Greek 'atheos' according to this video.
