Tom Holland!!! I’m still in awe! Even just hearing him discuss Connolly’s work is fascinating. I had tried to read Herodotus before, but it wasn’t until Mr. Holland’s translation that it really spoke to me. Now I’ve not only read it multiple times, but still go back to certain passages for reference and enjoyment. I’ve said it before but his “Rubicon” is basically required reading for anyone interested in Ancient Rome. “Persian Fire” and “In the Shadow of the Sword” are incredible also and have been read & re-read to the point I had to actually replace my original paperbacks!!! (Thankfully the hardcover of “Dynasty” has held up to multiple readings & abuse! 😂). And extra special thanks to Mr. Holland for the Kindle version of his Herodotus’ translation! The Footnotes, Glossaries & Appendixes are incredible & VERY helpful. And as a Jewish person, I think he was completely correct to refer to the ancient Jewish people as Judeans in “Pax”. Definitely more accurate representation as he explains in the interview. Incredible interview!

Peter Connolly's superb books on the Greeks and Romans were the very same motivations for me, at a similar age (with reading Herodotus and then Thucydides at twelve and thirteen too) that launched my own love of Classical History, and my academic career in the same.

"The judge smiled. Men are born for games. Nothing else. Every child knows that play is nobler than work. He knows too that the worth or merit of a game is not inherent in the game itself but rather in the value of that which is put at hazard. Games of chance require a wager to have meaning at all. Games of sport involve the skill and strength of the opponents and the humiliation of defeat and the pride of victory are in themselves sufficient stake because they inhere in the worth of the principals and define them. But trial of chance or trial of worth all games aspire to the condition of war for here that which is wagered swallows up game, player, all."

Unfortunately life would be meaningless without war. It's the way in which we determine what's actually valuable.

Where does one find a copy of his translation of herodotus? was looking at Amazon and I dont see it there??? didn't see it on his webpage which you so graciously provided. got to say I'm definitely interested in that! (also left a not to the marketing dept on the page, because seriously, good translations are hard to find. also why I like Ben Dykes Latin translations)

Anybody who watches Moan Inc can be in no doubt that the presenter of this channel is extremely passionate about the Classics and the world in which they are set in. Indeed, the channels presenter can make the claim that reading the Iliad saved her life. So it is with the up most respect that I asked why are you all heaping such praise on Mr Holland. This is a man who states that the best thing that happened to the classical world that you love, is that it went Christian.
It is a common complaint that women in the classical works don’t have a voice. The truth is they probably did or least more than we are aware. I mean for goodness’ sake how can you think that a people such has the ancient Greeks would praise a Goddess such as Athena, and then just ignore all the females that they saw every day. One such women who very much had a voice was Hypatia who murdered her, was it the pagans that Mr Holland condemns, who destroyed the Serapeum of Alexandria was it pagans in some depraved ritual. No it was Christians, so I aske again why are you praising this man
