It's truly hilarious that Paul doesn't realize that the 'patriarchy Ken' he's rooting for is an allegory for feminism. When Ken pushes back against the matriarchy of Barbieland, it's because he's been disenfranchised and ignored and unable to discover his own worth and identity outside of worshipping Barbie....you know, the way women have historically been disenfranchised and ignored and unable to discover our own worth or identity outside of submitting to our husbands (yes, side-eye to Morgan on that one).
When he cheers for patriarchy Ken, Paul is essentially cheering for feminism. The fact that he doesn't realize it is equal parts infuriating and funny.
I was just about to comment this. He did get the point of the movie but is too obtuse to realize it.
I was going to say that when he says he enjoys patriarchy Ken, I think what he means is that this guy has been treated unfairly the entire film, and now he's sticking up for himself, and that does feel kind of good! Of course, you have to balance that with "This behavior is harmful and destructive," but there is a conflict of emotions because you understand where he's coming from.

The wild thing is women had to write a report on how men in power were giving promotions to priests who covered up abuse but it was pope francis who was giving these promotions.😖 the church is run by men who let kids be abused by priests. I knew a lot of couples like that growing up in conservative religious communities. Divorce is seen as one of the worst “sins” and people are pressured to marry young. Recipe for disaster.
Seriously, and they have a child together, which IMO makes the situation worse. As someone who grew up with parents who really shouldn't be married, this kind of dynamic is really bad for children.

better not to instill the concept of loving relationship that ties a marriage, make it serve a spare function than what they believe to be serving god, that way, at least they won't be too upset stuck with that person for the rest of their lives

The main thing I took away from Barbie was that men are just as trapped by patriarchy as women are. “and Ken” needs to figure himself out, rather than relying on basing his whole identity on his relationship to Barbie. And vice versa. That’s the plastic world of Ken and Barbie that we all tend to live in. We each need to figure our own selves out. Not be so “plastic” with each other. Did they even listen to the words to “I’m just Ken”?
I get the impression that Paul and Morgan are so used to thinking in very black and white terms that they really cannot comprehend that any extreme is bad. In their mind one of two extremes has to exist, and they prefer the one with men in charge, so anything else is "woke feminist garbage". The concept of equality is just the rejection of patriarchy, and therefore as evil as matriarchy.
Heaven forbid some girls should come dressed up and enjoy a movie and happen to sit near Morgan's husband. Actually ridiculous that they felt superior enough to rag on those girls just for existing, or even insinuating they might try to flirt with Paul just because of how they were dressed.
Also would love to see you react to their shiny happy people video! People have literally been telling them to sue for defamation - their fans are out of control.

I feel like Morgan’s criticism was for sure shaped by her negative experiences that week. She wanted it to be like the movies she remembers from being a child (which is fine), but that’s not what the movie was. Also, I’m currently parenting teens and pre teens and wow it is super obvious they aren’t in that stage of parenthood yet. 😂 I want them to revisit their thoughts on the 12 year old when their child is that age.
It's literally rated as an adult movie, it never was created for children. It's pg13, so I get that's younger but it's not child focused
It's worth noting that "Barbie" was released in the midst of the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike, meaning that it couldn't have the promotional campaign and marketing that most major films get: press junkets, talk-show circuits, interviews, etc. Despite this, it's made over a billion worldwide.
Also, if Paul felt "called out" by anything in the movie, maybe he should examine and unpack those feelings.

Ok I can’t. I saw this with my 30 year old daughter and 5 year old granddaughter and we all enjoyed it. She didn’t pick up on the “adult innuendos.” I don’t know what propaganda they are seeing in this movie. It’s not political. It doesn’t make men feel like they need to “turn trans.” 🙄

The Girl Defined review of Barbie is pretty wild, too. Bethany’s husband, Dave, clearly got the movie AND enjoyed it, which sits in stark contrast to Bethany’s disdain and motivated reasoning. It’s worth the time investment to watch it.
The way they talk to each other makes me uncomfortable, I don't think they get along very well when the camera is turned off. I am Christian and I went opening night with my teenage daughter and we were decked out in pink. Why are they judging others for how they dressed and why were they worried about those girls "being inappropriate" I dressed up and went to the movies so that means I'm going to be inappropriate.....Like it makes no sense. I'm so tired of judgemental Christians.
They both think that boys are inherently better than girls, so it’s impossible for them to get along since one of them is a boy and the other is a girl. You can’t have a functional relationship like that, even a platonic relationship.
Me too. They seem to genuinely dislike each other and themselves. Probably because the judgmental voice they direct at everyone boomerangs back on themselves all the time. Can't imagine what it's like to live in the head of someone who is looking to be mad all of the time. It would be like standing in front of a firing range of your own making.
can i just say, it's so weird how they can hardly look at each other, almost like its painful to. they BARELY tolerate being in the presence of one another, at least for the videos they film, but i can't imagine what it looks like in their "real life". i truly think morgan dislikes and resents paul & paul's attitude toward morgan is in turn just overt and covert attempts to assert dominance and keep up his "holier than thou" front to both her and the catchall category of nonbelievers they constantly reference, when he is actually just blatantly insecure. it's just soooooo uncomfy that they dislike each other so much lol and that isn't even scratching the surface on the amount of LACK of insight, both emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually they possess. the barbie movie is no exception; its like pulling teeth for them to not only conceptualize the film, but for every allegory to go over their heads (the specifics of which someone pointed out very well in the comments). watching paul and morgan talk about anything, especially the moral value of other human beings, is like watching second graders try to explain quantum mechanics, except at least the kids are good people

I believe Morgan loves Paul, but she's becoming tired of dial dowm who she is to always be complient to her husband, she barely formulate her toughts in these videos, he's always taking the lead.
Morgan to me often either acts like she is drunk or disinterested. I think when she appears drunk it's because she's so giggly and performative that it happens to mimic a young woman being drunk. When she's disinterested she just looks tired. I can't imagine the hell she is going through in her own head.
It’s hysterical they don’t understand stories are SUPPOSED to include character transformation. For example, the daughter starts off cynical, and as the story progresses, she bonds with her mom and actually becomes supportive and encouraging. It’s character development.
Exactly--characters enter stories with misbeliefs that hold them back and those misbeliefs are confronted through the telling of the story. The fact that the daughter character transforms reinforces the filmmakers' intentions in the storytelling-->they're literally making a case against being cynical and sarcastic and rude the way she is when we first meet her.
Ironically, given Morgan's own misbeliefs, she failed to recognize this transformation or the moral it imparts.

I truly feel like Paul and Morgan went into this movie with preconceived notions and all that they’ve heard from other evangelicals….I rarely think of them having an open mind. I just feel like they are so blind to how the real world is and both are misogynistic in their own ways! Also we love a sassy B! You’re just my favorite!❤

As a evangelical Christian, I think the movie did an amazing job showing problems both women and men have in the world. I think so many people overlook the deep stuff that happened with Ken and what he showed about men and what they struggle with in the world.
The only actual political part of the movie was when they called Barbie a fascist. Talking about equality, community, girlhood, etc. None of that is inherently political. I’m so sick of people like this 🙃.

If anything that just shows what has happened in politics now, where people scream that even concepts like equality are "political" as if that means it should never come up in media unless it's specifically about politics. Very telling that some people don't want to have to consider or talk about equality.
It’s valid for Morgan to have wanted to escape back to some happy moments of childhood with a totally happy ending Barbie movie, and I would venture a guess that this movie is particularly triggering to her more than Paul because she is actually not safe to choose being a liberated Barbie. She (like I myself used to be) is stuck in a community who tries to surgically remove independence from young girls. If the daughter in the movie triggered her is that because she wasn’t allowed to talk back to her parents or other adults even when she should have been able to? I know I was never allowed to be that kind of tween and it damaged me. What soothed me as a young girl and 20 something were the love stories that promised that my life would actually be good with a man sweeping me off my feet. It didn’t play out that way in my life and I’m seeing that it’s not satisfying to her either.
I think it's really weird that Morgan clearly didn't trust Paul to sit next to some teenage girls.... what does that say about her opinion of him? I just can't get past that. Their opinions of this movie made me roll my eyes so many times. They truly seem to think men should be above any kind of criticism. Also they couldn't be more wrong about it dropping off lol.
Barbieland, at the beginning of the movie, is the simplistic world of how little girls play with Barbie. If I asked a child about their Ken doll, I imagine receiving a blank look, because Ken is wherever they happened to toss it... since it's just Ken. As a kid, I did play with Barbies, and Ken was basically one of the accessories. I feel like anyone who missed that part of the setup has possibly never watched little kids play with toys.

It’s interesting to me that Morgan gets so heated about the mother/daughter relationship in the movie. I thought it was very realistic as a daughter who was an angry teen but knows her mom loves her.
Morgan prioritizes being a mom, but she’s angry at a realistic portrayal of parenthood.
I assumed it's because in their culture (and in a lot of cultures) kids aren't allowed to talk that way to their elders and would likely be beaten for doing so.
As a formerly angsty teen with a 15yo daughter (and a few sons), the parent/child relationship depicted was really sweet and accurate. Teens are trying to find their place between childhood and adulthood, and parents are navigating that push/pull as well. My 15yo sometimes is crabby and rude and takes me for granted, but she also knows I love her fiercely and that she’s safe with me. She just made me a card about how I’m the only person she feels like she can fully trust, and I value that more than words can say.
The movie showed Gloria and Sasha learning more about each other and coming to appreciate the women they were and were becoming.

I think a lot of youtubers like morgan are starting to realize they painted themselves in a corner and they either act out or double down on bad beliefs.
Maybe theres some resentment also because they feel like theyve stuck to a particular brand/image for so long they dont know how to get out.
Theres a lot of similarities in paul and morgan and Bethany and dave. I would not be surprised to see one or both of these couples separate because of how they communicate with each other.

I feel like certain subsets of our society have taken the Barbie movie just way too seriously.
And the people who have major problems with it, would probably not have the same issues with the same methods, if it was depicting the opposite side of the political coin.

I guess they have never gone to a movie or book premiere where enthusiasts dress up. I love excuses to wear costumes. Haven't seen Barbie yet, though. I'm out of the US until Sept.
If you haven’t seen it yet, bethy and dav did their own review of barbie. Dav has some very enlightening opinions on it. I was genuinely shocked by it

I’ve been trying to pump myself up to watch it, seeing Bethany and Dav interact usually makes me physically tense up so I know I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it.
Yes the Barbie movies were early 2000s and I was mostly too old for them (born in ‘89) but my sister who is 10 years younger loved them so of course I watched with her. I’m not sure if Morgan has younger siblings? Or perhaps she just particularly sought out Barbie movies at an older age (no judgment as I played with Barbies til I was 16)
I'm much older. I didn't see any barbie movies. I'm not sure how people who were children during those movies times would be expecting this movie to be. I think it was supposed to be based on 90s barbies, so those were before those movies if 2001 was the first?

ETA: is it just me, or does Morgan tend to have harsher criticisms than Paul? I'm getting the impression that they're trying to pass Morgan off as the hardcore one, while Paul is more moderate.
I definitely felt Morgan was harsher in this video. I am not sure if she is being more severe in general lately or just in this video but it was really interesting! I’ve always kind of seen Morgan as someone who is equally as problematic as Paul, but she was more along for the ride instead of leading the charge. This made me feel a bit differently about that.
It's kind of strange. He had to coax good things about the movie out of Morgan. He gave the movie an above average rating. He's sending out mixed signals.
I think Paul WANTS her to be seen as the more conservative and aggressive one. But only if it's something he agrees with. I feel he feeds her lines and thoughts QUITE often. And morgan is so checked out on life. I don't think she is happy with her life or it's dynamic with Paul, and so it comes across as her being bored or rude. I think Paul so desperately wants to please his conservative family. He wants their blessing so bad. Yet it's opposite of what his actual identity longs to be. And so therefore we end up with their incredibly awkward and cringey videos.
@@RobAGabor It really seems like he enjoyed the movie, he just doesn't like (his interpretation of) the messaging. Which is a lot more balanced than Morgan here, because no one can honestly say that this movie was not funny. I'm conservative and I had a great time!
What I learned from talking to men like this in real life is whenever they think something is good, they say it “doesn’t exist”. Like they actually don’t know the difference between the two terms. They think saying something exists is the same as saying it’s bad. Acknowledging something = that thing is a bad thing, otherwise why acknowledge it?

Thanks for doing this, I tried to watch Rachel Oats' video about this, and I couldn't get through it. But I was still curious what they said. You said exactly what I was thinking when Morgan was complaining about the 12 yo. Have you MET a 12 year old? Because they do not need to have a horrible life to be angry. No one does, honestly, but it's pretty common for tweens and teens to rebel against their parents, even if their parents are kind and patient. They're trying to forge their own identity outside of their parents, It's a difficult time. And it especially annoyed me because I identified with that kid, and she reminded me of myself when I was younger. What also stood out was that Morgan thought it was so outrageous that they said it was ok to have kids and ok not to have them. Not everyone wants kids, Morgan, Get over it.

Sound of Freedom was a wonderfully made movie about a very important and serious topic. Do you not want people to know how common sex trafficking and child sex trafficking are?
Have you actually watched Sound of Freedom? I did and I believe that it’s a very important film that brings awareness to the evil that is child trafficking. The people who tried to slander this movie look incredibly suspect to me. I also saw the Barbie movie and loved it, so there’s that.

I haven’t watched any of Morgan’s individual vlogs in a while, but I remember shortly after their baby was born, she spoke in a vlog about how hard she was finding it to be energized for filming and live streams. We can only speculate so much but I can imagine that’s what we’re seeing here. I totally agree with you that it must get very complicated to rely on your personal life for business!

My win for the week is I saw both Barbie and Oppenheimer. Both movies were amazing, and they have really gotten me to think over how society works and how I fit into it and how I might want to make some changes to have a more positive impact on the world around me.

I am not shocked that Morgan have a lower score than Paul. She has sacrificed significantly more than him to be an evangelical Christian. Her seeing a movie that challenges the choices she made is probably extremely triggering if any part of her misses or longs for a different life
I loved Barbie..i loved the little details. Them adjusting the size of pieces is amazing.
They didnt use a lot of CGI. Like the traveling to the real world. Was a set. It was amazing. They had them.on wires. Staff moved the pieces.

I haven't seen Barbie yet, so I can't comment, but Micarah Tewers has made my favorite review so far. (And she is a beautiful example of a christian creator who keeps her content totally clean and is still so fun to watch.)

And this in the Oppenheimer kind of proves the Barbie point. Why is there a sex scene, nudity?, in a movie about the guy who helped build the nuclear bombs that killed a massive amount of people 😳. Because women are still props in movies, made by men, who want to exercise power and control over beautiful women by requiring them to strip for a movie.

Guy here. How many people got the point of the 2001 sequence? The movie starts out with breaking up baby dolls. It ends with women hugging their children, and Barbie going to the Gynecologist to get her plumbing fixed. The point? It's okay to want to be a mother, to raise and love your kids. And that, gets it a 10 from me. And I'm a guy...

My dad is a republican trump supporter and he loved the Barbie movie. His favorite part was weird Barbie, and he thought the beach musical fight scene was a parody of the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan.

40:52 it’s actually close to how the marketing goes for Christian movies when they come out. Lots of money goes into advertising and Christians are told about it, groups from churches plan to go watch it together etc
Or like Sound of Freedom where a whole system is set up to buy tickets for strangers, never knowing if they ever attend or you are just donating to the producers. Also messes up the usual way of figuring out the stats of how many people watched the movie because ticket sales don't reflect bums on seats.

"It's paradise because women rule" how the hell did he come to that conclusion? It was very clear that it was "paradise" because it was a FANTASY LAND. It's the fantasy of little girls who own Barbie Dolls, where Barbie is always young, beautiful, well dressed and can do anything. A big part of the movie was about how the fantasy isn't real, and that's why Barbie goes looking for something else even though she was in "paradise".

Funny how Morgan said she watched all the Barbie movies but didn't realize that in at least the ones she named the prince ISN'T KEN. He was just Prince Charming or whatever was the name of the prince in the story they were recreating. Ken wasn't her prince in many of the movies. Mattel had stopped calling Ken Barbie's boyfriend about 20 years ago. So even for most of Morgan's life Ken and Barbie weren't a thing. So the disappointment is on her. Are they missing the WHOLE POINT OF IT WAS THAT IT WAS BARBIE'S WORLD? Of course the Barbies rule in BARBIES WORLD. Also I'm not surprised that Morgan's score was lower. I see with many extreme christians that the women tend to be more offended and against women with differing opinions on motherhood, parenting, gender roles etc. Extreme christian men take it as normal feminist stuff especially if they aren't their type of christian and scoffs but the women can be more harsh and hateful.
I always thought it was Ken playing the role of the prince in the Barbie movies. Like in the animated movies, at least the ones up until Princess and the Pauper it was Barbie and Ken playing these roles in the movies.

@@inarifox8912 Just looked it up and in almost all the princess movies, the princes weren't "Ken" but people assume they are Kens. I would agree if they all looked the same like the barbies do but they don't. In the fashion and like horse movies Ken is credited.

Just starting but had to stop to say, past 3 years of covid must have dampened the number of people going to the movie theatres, so I'm not surprised you can't think of any recent packed theatre moments
And I must admit to being prejudiced against P&M, but I don't think it's mature of them to complain about having to sit apart because they wanted to be frugal (which I also applaud) but didn't plan ahead. I know I'm prejudiced but it smacks of entitlement to me
To me, Paul misunderstanding the message of the movie so badly (I completely agree with B's analysis) shows that he's projecting and that's a glimpse into his inner world (yes, his deep insecurity)

I watched the movie with my 26 year old son. He enjoyed the movie and his masculinity was not at all threatened

I'm thinking Morgan was triggered and that's why she gave it such a low score. Plus Barbie was part of her childhood, not Paul's. When I say triggered, I mean subconsciously at a deeper level that she's in denial about, Morgan can understand the movie's message (the one B and I share, that it's about equality). But she's consciously chosen the life that she's chosen and so suppressed/rejected the concept of gender equality and being brought face-to-face with it again, Morgan has to vehemently reject it by saying the movie is bad

i had never thought about viewing this movie from a religious perspective until you said at the beginning that you didn't find anything "anti-jesus" about it. now, thinking back on it, i think if you were a deeply religious person watching this (i'm jewish, but also maybe agnostic, so this doesn't fully resonate for me in a religious context) you could view the conversation between rhea perlman - she plays ruth handler, the creator of barbie - and margot robbie's barbie as a conversation with god. ruth IS barbie's creator, and though she frames herself in the role of barbie's "mother," i think you could also interpret that as a message from your creator with an invitation to make your own choices in life, live how you choose, and be alive as wholly as you want to be. i thought this movie was as beautiful and poignant as it was funny and light, and i can't wait to see it again when it comes out at home 💗

I loved the Barbie movie! ..it was a great date night! We thought it was funny, I related to th female aspects of it, and my boyfriend loved Ken and Alan 😅 it's a funny movie with a pro female message ...not that deep if you can't relate lol

I don't think I've enjoyed aa movie more than this one, except Princess Bride, and it remotely reminded me of that movie because both are very joyful and delightful.
My oldest daughter (13) loved this movie. My son (11) loved it, and when it was ending he looked at me and said “I get it mom” like he couldn’t put it into words, but he understood what women had experienced based on Ken’s experience. And my youngest (5) just loves the doll bashing scene because it feels so taboo. Like she would never do that to her dolls but it might be an intrusive thought she’s had 🤣
The messages of the film, from my perspective, were that the existence of the Barbie doll did not "fix" Patriarchy and it was probably weird to think that it could, and also that Patriarchy is bad for women AND for men.

I saw a friend I see about once a year. We had ice cream at the local dairy bar. It was amazing and I'm so glad he's my friend.
At first I thought Morgan was standing up to her husband. As the video goes on, she seems brainwashed by her husband.
"Quit your job and go learn how to be a Mom"!? Okay...how will she pay her bills, rent, medical etc.

Regarding Morgan keeping an eye on Paul....purity culture has taught her that men are lustful animals that cannot have friendships with women without sexual intent, so of course this is her reaction to him sitting by other women. But also, if this was intended to be a date, I could see how ones own insecurities could cause this dynamic in general. If this happened on a date though and i could not sit by my spouse, then i would likely try to get my money back or get tickets for another time and come back.
2. Regarding the marketing, they spent comparatively little...Around $150 million in marketing and grossed $1.03 BILLION so far...so. More was spent in marketing new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie (around $200 mil), and it has only grossed $51 million so far. The reason the Barbie movie is doing so well is not just because of the marketing of it, but because it is resonating with so many people, understanding the cultural moment and saying something meaningful that would resonante with people of very different persuasions. It put in just enough to make people really talk about it and do exactly what Paul and Morgan are doing. Them spewing hate about the thing only drives more attention to it. I think that the creators would LOVE that they were willing to go see it and talk about it, even if they do not (currently) understand or appreciate it. I think it is planting seeds of doubt into their narrow world view that will hopefully sprout and grow. Unfortunatly, their attitudes sugges that the seed has fallen among the thorns of bad theology and toxic American evangelical talking points.
3. I think that they see it as political and are confused by the movie's popularity, because they do not realize how radically fundamental their views are (despite them being shared by many mainstream evangelical christians).
4. I am sorry, but how is Morgan being stalked in Wal-Mart Wal-Mart's fault??

6. As for their ratings....this is the second response video I have watched from Christians rating the Barbie movie, the other being Girl defined and the husband there also rated it higher. I wonder if it is easier for evangelical men who espouse traditional gender roles to swallow ideas around the patriarchy being toxic because women who accept male headship authority have to jump through more mental hoops to justify their own worldview?
