The longer version of My Mother Told Me from the famous Viking Series!
I love the song My Mother Told Me and was sad to see it didn't have more than one verse, so I decided to create several verses myself. We created this tribute to the awesome series called 'Vikings'. We'd love to hear what you think and please share it with your other Vikings enthusiast friends! Perfect when playing AC Valhalla too :)

👄💦Lyrics:
My mother told me
someday I would buy
galley with good oars
sail to distant shores
stand up on the prow
noble barque I steer
steady course for the haven
hew many foe-men
hew many foe-men
My mother told me
Someday I would glide
wind like the crow,
waves beneath my boat.
High above the clouds
Their voices I can hear
The Valkyrie await me
Hew many foe-men
Hew many foe-men
My mother told me
someday I would buy
galley with good oars
sail to distant shores
stand up on the prow
noble barque I steer
steady course for the haven
hew many foe-men
hew many foe-men
My mother told me
Someday I would die
Valkyrie there, 'lo
Come to take me home
Valhalla's gates askew
See my friends anew
The Aesir be awaiting
Hew many foe-men
Hew many foe-men
My mother told me
someday I would buy
galley with good oars
sail to distant shores
stand up on the prow
noble barque I steer
steady course for the haven
hew many foe-men
hew many foe-men - Видеоклипы
Excellent, good to hear more verses than just repeating the first one over and over.
That's the idea! Thanks :)
This is the best version I've heard. Gives me chills
Thanks so much
Absolutely!!!
"In the valley of Valhalla, is where you are each
night;
Standing next to mighty Odin, who witnessed
your great fight!."
Where tf did u get this? It’s fucking great!
@@jonescantfight4677 I read in the comment section of a video from "The Infographics Show"
Best version of the skaldic poem turned song.
You honor me, thank you!
I can just imagine this in old Nordic. It's beautiful. It's really beautiful.
Thank you :) I've made some more songs in viking theme that you're welcome to have a listen to here or on Spotify!
I really love this!
Your voice is perfect for Viking music and this piece is so deliciously earthy and atmospheric. I'm sure Odin is pleased with you!
Gorgeous production too!
I was hoping I'd hear from you about this one :D what a way to start my day!
Very much agreed. 👍
I am viking myself and I love this song the asir is with you brother
Truly the Vikings and their voices, echo with this amazing song! 😀😀
I'm glad our rendition was able to give off that authentic vibe. Thank you!
Your welcome
I found this version of the song on Spotify and I am addicted to it.
That's great to hear! 😁
Same
Same!
Same
As a spotify boycotter I found it here, but sill... same.
This "song" is actually is a snippet of a longer poem and actually event about a little boy who murders another boy with a rock. His father is horrified but his mother encourages his behavior, he later writes down what she said to him as a poem.
If l remember correctly it was also a scene in ‘Vikings’ the series ……. I wonder if it actually happened ……..
Very good!
I thank you!
The gods are with you
and with you!
We Slavs have Viking blood in our veins, from the Varangians who founded Kievan Rus' 🇧🇾🇺🇦🇷🇺
I also really love the show Vikings ❤️
💪💪💪
You managed to make me cry at the very beginning. Ragnar ... Looking at him and entering his character and character.....I changed a lot in my life. Thank you once again.SKOL!!!
GALLEY WITH GOOD OARS
I do like that part too ha
SAIL TO DISTANT SHORES
The entrance 🔥🔥🔥
From someone with Norse decent, I am pleased by this. This was wonderfully done my friend!
Thank you! Skol!
aweasomeeeee
I love the original version, BUT HOLY DAMN I'm so glad I just found your version, those lyrics fit PERFECTLY like it was in the original poem, your voice, the chore, the instruments 11/10
Thank you! That means a lot
Gods, I love this so much more than the original, it gets repetitive but with your added lyrics it actually sounds like a Viking would sing it. Great job!
That's so nice to hear! The repetitiveness was a conscious choice to represent the cyclic nature of the Viking belief. Glad you like it :)
@@BartTheBardOfficial Which was a nice thought, though as someone who listens to songs over and over, non-repetitive lyrics are the best for me. The original is something I’d play on scenic ride through Finland, this version I’d listen to anywhere. Either way, both are really good
@@dr.timelord0483 Thanks! In that case I think you're gonna like the song I'll upload in the end of this month. It's long, it's not got any repetition in lyrics, and it's Lord of The Rings. :)
@@BartTheBardOfficial Oh hell yeah, can’t wait! Skål!
Not me playing this every time I play Assassins Creed Valhalla now 🌝
I hope you play a lot then haha ❤️ that game is epic
This song is just AWESOME!!! Thank you for extra lyrics... it was so necessary ;)
I'm so happy you like the extra lyrics! Thanks :)
Valhalla awaits!
Brilliant!
I'll see you there one day! :D
it's here!! hype!!!
skål!!
I have received a glorious vision while listening to this
What did you see? 👀
@@BartTheBardOfficial At first I seen longboats sailing facing a fierce and mighty storm as they sailed then the vision changed to where they where disembarking from the longboats near a river bank as they began marching through the woods singing this tune perhaps it is a sign?
@@Pixelsoldier5888 this is epic. It's a sign! I'll do a new viking song in 2 months, in August, which fits that vision perfectly.
SKOL!!!!!!!!!
Skål!!!
My favorite version of the song, LOVE the added verses. It really completes it!
Thank you so much :)
Where is that SUPER like button ?
a SUPER like button for a SUPER guy
Odin shall carry you to Valhalla himself

Thank you for sharing this with me. I appreciate it and this is also a great way for me to find out what it is people like about the song, so I can make more songs just like it. Thanks! Next song: The Valheim Journey, keep your eyes out for it :)

Love this version of the song and the new verses you made are amazingly done it seems like it belongs now one of my favourite songs
Thank you!
Thank you from the heart!!!!
Glad you like it!
I listen to this at least three times a day I might have a problem.... that I have no intention of solving.
The best kinds of problems :^)
This is the only version I'll listen to anymore. The repeating lyrics on any other version bore me
This version is full of determination and honesty. I really do believe your mother told you that.❤ and I would follow you if you sang this to me to convince me to row your boat💪👍💯👏
Thanks! Honesty and authenticity are the most important things I value in music and I strive to achieve them. You saying this means a lot to me!
@@BartTheBardOfficial Well, your music speaks to me, and many more like me, so please, keep making more❤

Ah that's fun to hear how you found me! Great to have you with us :)
Meine Frau fragte mich weshalb ich ständig diese Melodie summte nun ist sie auf dem besten Weg eine schildmaid zu werden!!!
U should do the old Norse version too! The one king harald and half Dan sang in episode 10 season 5
Yeeees, but who will teach me ancient Norse? Haha
@@BartTheBardOfficial it’s easy to just read the lyrics and follow along what they’re singing. I learnt it in just a week lol
I'll keep it in mind, brother! A project for next year
I do believe herald sang it best
nice nice nice. from philippines
Wow, that's a long way! Hello back from The Netherlands!
Bragi himself would be proud
I like your versions of these chants!
Also, this is a comment on Valhalla calling also (couldn't comment there)! nicely done!!
Thank you for taking the time to send this positive message, I appreciate it! We're currently working on an original Viking themed song about the game of Northgard. I think it'll be right up your alley :)
Brilliant 👏
Thank you!
thank you friend, see you in Valhalla!
Definitely! :)
perfect🙄❤⚔
Just like you! Skål!
Oh this is so amazing!
You're amazing!
Please add the follwoing verse
"My father told me
Someday I would die
With blood covered hands
Fighting in distant lands
Stand in the shieldwall weapon gripped in hand
Face the rain of arrows and smile as those land
My brother told me
Someday I would die
With blood covered hands
Raiding distant lands
...."
The reason the original only has one verse is because it's a skaldic adaptation of a stanza of egils saga. It's literally a historic poem.
Yeah! Ive read that excerpt of the poem too. It actually goes on for quite a while longer but I guess they just took that first bit for inspiration :)
Valhalla welcomes u 😂
I hope they'll wait a bit haha
Incredibilis
Like you :)
I'm sorry for my stupid question but in which part of the serie is this soundtrack for?
Hi, I only just now saw this comment! It's from the season when Harald and Halfdan make their appearance and several other episodes :)
00:45
Is there anyway I can download this version of the song?
Yes there is! Head over to bartzeal.bandcamp.com and look for the "Volume One" album. There you can buy the album for 7eu or the song for 1eu and download it straight away :)
I loved how you change the lyrics instead of repeating the same versus over and over. That's what annoyed me so much about the original. It was the same thing over and over again.
Exactly! I'm glad you like it :)
You shoukd sing this in old norse. Maybe collab wirh payton parrish? That would ve sick.
Yeah! I sent him a message once for a collab, never heard back haha he must be a busy man!
Is this going up on spotify? If not it definitely should!
Hey Jonathan! Absolutely! It will be up on the 9th of December. I'll give you an update once it's up and will share a link in the description :) glad to hear you enjoy it!!
Slight hic up, so it'll be the 21st of December until its on Spotify, iTunes etc
Astonishing! 👏
Glad to hear! :)
Sir. You have added the meat to the potatoes to this song.
Thanks! I like the analogy!
Fucking amazing man!
Thank you so much. Glad I did the song justice!
@@BartTheBardOfficial you absolutely did!
god i love this version. does anyone have tabs/sheet music for the guitar😭
Am F C Am
Am F Am Em Am
That's the basis. The fingerpicking of the melody is all around those chords, nothing to fancy. You'll figure it out! 😁
@@BartTheBardOfficial thank you i will sure try haha:)
I've read Egil’s Saga, the song actually has a second versu found in chapter 40 and again in 57...
Okay so your education begins here...
Okay so the FULL version in Old Norse:
Þat mælti mín móðir
Þat mælti mín móðir,
at mér skyldi kaupa
fley ok fagrar árar,
fara á brott með víkingum,
standa upp í stafni,
stýra dýrum knerri,
halda svá til hafnar
hǫggva mann ok annan,
hǫggva mann ok annan.
Þél höggr stórt fyr stáli
stafnkvígs á veg jafnan
út með éla meitli
andærr jötunn vandar,
en svalbúinn selju
sverfr eirar vanr þeiri
Gestils ölpt með gustum
gandr of stál fyr brandi.

An English translation found online. This is a very literal translation, so wordplay double entendre and connotation are lost... also it's not a lyrical translation so it may be awkward to sing. There are lyrical translations that can be song well and some even attemp to fix some things that get lost in transliterations such as this.
This said my mother
This said my mother
that I shall buy for myself
a swift ship and of a pretty oar,
to journey away with freebooters,
to stand tall on the prow,
steer a worthy merchant-ship,
direct it thus to the harbour,
strike one man and the other,
strike one man and the other.
With the file he strikes out, hard against the steel
of the prow-steed on the flat path,
with the chisel of the snowstorms,
the opposite-oared giant of the twig,
but the cold-made one of that willow,
the merciless one files
Gestill's swan with gusts,
this wand of steel against the ship's beak.
So that's actually the full song... just letting you know.
I like your version, I do... just know that there is a real second verse.
Ah, a fellow enthusiast of the real life viking culture! I know the original poem has more lines to it. I referred to the song used in Vikings having only one verse, not the actual poem that this song took its inspiration from. The Vikings' sung version of Egils poem is already an adaptation and not a literal translation. I looked up the full poem, drew some inspiration, and then wrote my own 2 extra verses to fit the Vikings series and general pop culture's interpretation of a viking, rather than the exact poem. Glad you enjoy my song!
@@BartTheBardOfficial nice, I'd like to think you'd be highly honored as a poet of the halls, for it was one of the highest respected possessions in Old Norse culture.
Currently I have but coffee to drink, but no matter, I'll drink to your song anyways... Skoll!
@@binaryglitch64 Beautiful words, skoll!
