Im an Apache, Cherokee, and Mohawk son. The cultures of the vikings and the native americans are so different and yet so similar. Im captivated at the fact that hundreds of years ago our peoples once interacted and even had mutual respect for each other in most instances. Even today, I see comments all the time of natives and people of Norse descent praising each other and admiring each others cultures and how much we really have in common. I love this song and Im amazed at this rendition of it.

Fun fact. This was never a shanty, instead this was a poem. A child had taken his first life, killed someone for the first time, and he was in shock but his mother praised him. He then spoke this poem. Roughly this, though, as this version isn't a direct translation, adjusted slightly to work better as a song. But yeah, for those curious about the origin, that's the origin story!
Edit: It's from the Saga of Egil Skalagrimson, which is extra info I learned from the comments! Thank you everyone!

i love how itäs not just regular cover but literally playing (in a good way) with the scheme and enchanting it with your awesome voice
OK, I just found this, I love it so much, but while I was vibing, I was not expecting a whispering, smiling creature of myth and legend to appear.
At this point I'm convinced Alina could stick three strings to any household object and make some great piece of music.
I was a little surprised she played the hurdy-gurdy, rather than the nyckelharpa. I have seen one of those "bowed lyres" before, it's a Finnish instrument called the Jouhikko.
I'd have liked to hear it in Old Norse.
After all of that, I'd actually say she did a very good job.
@@resourcedragon the bowed lyre is also known as a tagelharpa
My little brother can do it with one string. It's ridiculous. Some people just have the knack, then of course they add loads of practice to that.
Even her cat is an instrument!
Now that you mention it, I wonder what she could come up with in my toolshed.
Am I the only one who is incredibly fascinated with the skull she played as an instrument as well as the sinister makeup?
Nope
The mark on her forehead is the Nordic rune of protection, there's nothing remotely sinister ( which incidentally means" of the left hand side".

A raven, a cat, and a protection rune, interesting spell work she has going in that song. "We watch, we hear her callings, we shall be not far from you." Once from the old ways, always from the old ways.
