You misunderstand, it's mostly so that the leader of each section can coordinate the part without a conductor. And the bowings are synchronised to ensure consistent phrasing, and no gaps in the music. Similarity of gesture is to be expected.

This orchestra is missing a conductor, along with Rhythm Guitar, Celeste, and Harp. Also no brass, woodwinds & percussion.
