When I listen to Tchaikovsky I feel the full depth of the russian soul. God, it's so brilliant and so beautiful, I don't understand how a person could come up with such beauty. My favorite piece.
Stunning performance! I just played this for my seven-year-old and four-year-old, and they clapped enthusiastically at the end. They wished you all could hear their applause, so I needed to leave this comment. Thank you so much for posting this.
The peak of the European culture is undoubtedly the Classical music. This is just breathtaking. So mesmerizing, beautiful and sad, full of sorrow and longing for something that may never come back...just my interpretation. Regardless, greetings from a Hungarian to everyone who's in love with culture.
Tchaikovsky was the complete genuis in an incomplete world. Even his fire seemingly proved not great enough in this cold world. But we do have his music. Each time it is played we may gather around it and be kept live by its beauty. Is that not a cheerful idea? I am so grateful for his music.
And again at 17:00 - 17:40. They're great throughout of course. The first violist is one of the finest players I've ever had the joy to hear, and so beautifully suited to chamber work. I wish I could have the pleasure of hearing them do a complete solo recital some time...
As regard of my humble ears, l appreciate Serenade for strings is top masterpiece among all of Tchaikovsky. It is dreamy or sometimes it is majestic, these affections always catch me perfectly.
If you want to listen to emotional music go with Tchaikovsy … if you want to listen to strength and powerful listen to Tchaikovsky .. if you want to listen to soundtracks also listen to Tchaikovsky … this man is a gift from God to the humanity …
I am stunned by this performance and it is surely the best rendition of this precious piece I 've heard till now. Congratulations to Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and thanks a lot!
Beautiful... majestic music from another age performed with the score appearing on computer tablets! I had to do a bit of research about how the pages are turned... because they do! Love this group... another wonderful group of musicians from Norway. I love the Oslo Philharmonic as well. Thanks for this.
Love this composer, this piece, this ensemble. What a glorious combination. One of the few times I've seen the NCO seated and using (discreetly) scores. No matter, they still dance! Many great memories of playing this work myself. The seconds are super-satisfyingly solid in the first mvt; the violas **everywhere**; and the balance is exquisite. Wonderful video, grateful it has been shared here with us.
Magnificent. It's so interesting that there's not a single Somalian here. They are by the millions in Norway, and they supposed to bring cultural enrichment, but I am yet to see any Somalian doctors or musicians. Perhaps we should send them to Israel.
Because they're playing the notes--and, as it is a Romantic work, doing *vibrato*. Vibrato is an added pulsing shaking motion (lot of different ways to do it) that adds intensity, resonance, variations of colour to each note. It's normal in string playing, although very little used in Baroque performance practice.
A remarkable number of east Asian women in tn this orchestra (and rather good looking ones too! In fact the whole orchestra is good looking). If it's not too gauche to ask.. is there any reason for this? An absolutely wonderful rendition of Serenade.
Gorgeous sound, beautiful interpretation! However, I couldn’t watch the playing bc of all of the unnecessary swaying and facial grimacing. I remember hearing about a young orchestra whose members were told to sit absolutely still when playing....adults should have to try it as well, especially when they’re being filmed or videotaped! All of that nonsense does NOT improve playing, sound, or ensemble.
What a NONSENSE to say ! Such a nice thing to watch human emotions when they play so incredibly GOOD. Please NCO don't listen to those stiff dead academics. Stay as you are. Stay ARTISTS!
If you had replicable evidence that sitting absolutely still while playing improves performance, you'd have cited it. You don't, do you!? Meanwhile here's a splendid performance where the players move naturally. If it bothers you personally, consider not watching.
In a chamber orchestra without a conductor, the first stands are responsible for physically cueing their sections' attacks and releases, which they do with their torso and head. In a piece with as much as the tempo follows phrases in the Serenade, it would be impossible to make you happy and stay together.
Watch the Balanchine choreography perhaps and maybe you can enjoy their swaying? Maybe the swaying shows their immersion in the score? It is rare to enjoy watching an orchestra. Perhaps when we can do so it is worth changing for.
God, the opening chord just takes your breath away
And its return at 28.23 !!!
voiced differently, of course, but still... such a great closing of the circle moment...
When I listen to Tchaikovsky I feel the full depth of the russian soul.
God, it's so brilliant and so beautiful, I don't understand how a person could come up with such beauty. My favorite piece.
That is my favorite piece of all classical music as well, it brings so many different feelings it's just pure beauty.
Cheers from France to Russia

It's very reassuring to know that such young children appreciate music like this. It makes me feel good about the future of classical music!
Your children are lucky to have you as their father!

Wow without a conductor that's amazing syncrhonization!
As always with Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, a wonderful, both intense and poetic performance!
the divinely sweet strings of Tchaikovsky!
This is one of the most exciting C major pieces I've ever heard.

Who needs a conductor? Stunning performance!
Terje Tønnesen
I almost made it through the 1st movement without crying. The violas at 9:03 finally got me
that is literally the best part i love it so much

PS they are having SO MUCH FUN in the waltz, look at those joyful smiling faces.
Yes they move, I would expect nothing less from musicians who play with so much passion and commitment. Beautiful rendition of this classic piece.

Whenever I want to listen to the nature I listen to Tchaikovsky. His music is just like the nature talks. Stunning !

Comfort and Gracefulness of this music is beyond description
I'm on cloud
I think I'm quite a tough guy, but this Serenade makes me difficult to keep my tears under control
Only real tough guys can cry, they don't give af what people think.
The best, the best, the best.

It's wonderful when children respond like that, and this gem will do that to people!
Thank you for this beautiful performance! The Elegie is especially gorgeous! Love the lighting effects, too.
The opening of this song has a pathos that it absolutely mesmerizing. Excellent performance!

How can one human write this? I do not understand.
The great classical composers are on a very high evolved level. They are on a high madreygah (Hebrew for step), that’s why.
8:18. 🎉

Lmao they will cry for racism when there's plenty of asians who play classical music and are immigrants too. Maybe it has to do something with IQ ;)
Too fast for me had to play at x0.75 for the Allegro to be Moderato

Why do they wiggle their hands so much?
Because they're playing the notes--and, as it is a Romantic work, doing *vibrato*. Vibrato is an added pulsing shaking motion (lot of different ways to do it) that adds intensity, resonance, variations of colour to each note. It's normal in string playing, although very little used in Baroque performance practice.
They are using vibrato.

Well played, but not as tuneful as Dvorak Serenade!
What a NONSENSE to say ! Such a nice thing to watch human emotions when they play so incredibly GOOD. Please NCO don't listen to those stiff dead academics. Stay as you are. Stay ARTISTS!
It’s called being passionate. If you don’t like it just don’t watch.
If you had replicable evidence that sitting absolutely still while playing improves performance, you'd have cited it. You don't, do you!? Meanwhile here's a splendid performance where the players move naturally. If it bothers you personally, consider not watching.
