My grandma used to, “have a place for everything and put everything in its place.” Getting rid of stuff can be hard, but well worth it. Less IS more. Organizing is easy, especially if you watched Sesame Steet. Remember, “these three things belong together, one of these doesn’t?” Putting things away is easy once you’ve done step 1 & 2. I think of the “Cat in the Hat” children’s book. The Cat in the Hat ALWAYS cleaned up after himself before he left.

Then it occurred to him like a lightbulb moment! He had always kept his wallet in his back pocket but he had always had work that involved standing. Once he became a sales rep that required a significant amount of driving - he began sitting "lopsided" on his wallet for multiple hours every day. I gave myself a month to declutter and spruce it up either a fresh coat of paint or shelf liner. Then on to the next room. Bedrooms take the most time and letting go of good clothes is hard. Before decluttering, I was literally seeing a therapist bc I couldn’t understand why I could not manage my household mess. Therapist tried to dig deep into my childhood to understand why I felt the need to be so tidy. Fast forward four months - got rid of the therapist and did a serious declutter. I cannot explain to you how BIG of a change it has been to have decluttered! Well, this one was from my 3D printer, and is the only part they DON'T sell separately. I had to construct another one myself, ordering way more than I needed because I didn't know the exact dimensions or screw sizes...it was an ordeal. The 100% most important thing you can do after your big initial clean up, is to change your mindset on shopping. Ever since I stopped shopping for fun, the amount of mess in my home has dropped. Instead of feeling like I need to declutter every week, it's turned into every few months. And my declutter isn't a 3 day affair anymore, it's usually me getting rid of maybe 5 things. Not having a massive amount of things I don't really need coming into my home all the time has been so incredibly freeing

      Same here.
Shopping clutters your home and it destroys the planet.
      Just stop shopping.
And tell your friends and family what you want for your birthday and Christmas so they can buy things that you really need. Right now most homes are filled with stuff they have been given as presents. Every year their homes are filled with stuff they don't need and then they purge most of it. It's so sad and it is killing the planet. 😫

Hi Cass - I'd write a longer blurb, but I'm running around like crazy woman trying "just to tidy up" my home before our friends come over tonight to watch the big game. I told my hubby, someday, we will have a house that is always tidy. He looked skeptical, but with your guidance I know I can do it. I'm old and can't work for hours on end anymore, but 15 minute segments work great for me. And no more fake butt devices. You look beautiful the way you are. Keep the info coming, keep pounding it into my brain. I need it. Thanks for sharing and continued success. Love PegEgg

The part about the "home" for a certain kind of item being the LIMIT of how much of that we can keep at one time has REALLY helped me. When I got my drawers organized, I stopped buying more clothes - because I can SEE that have no ROOM for more! Or I have to get rid of something I have to make room for a better item. But I can't just keep acquiring more and more with no closet or drawer or cabinet space for it.

Now that I'm getting treatment and taking Adderall, it is A LOT easier to remember to do something like a daily 10 minute tidy. I think I'll set an alarm on my phone and talk it over with my husband to see if we can start implementing that! (I also found out that I'm totally a butterfly after taking the Clutterbug quiz. Now I tell my hubby that anything we use daily and want to have neatly put away must be in a container that is 1. easily accessible and, 2. SEE THROUGH. I have a plate Rack in my kitchen for all my plates , serving platters, etc.. all those kind of things. .. it's a tall plate rack, it holds a lot of things there is even a shelf on the bottom of this thing for all the spices I use every single day. I want to have things out and accessible that's part of my organization you know personality and granted , I have a hidden storage too.... but I have to have most everything readily available and see it. Or I'll forget about it. Yep. Lol.
I took the doors off of half the cabinets in my kitchen so that I could store things and just see them... like the useless cabinet over the refrigerator ( WHY ARE THEY STILL DOING THIS, anyway??! Its USELESS. For the most part. lol. Unless youre 5'10" ... and even then , I question WHY ..)
Anyway...that holds my French presses, it holds plates for coffee cups ( my coffee cups are on a shelf underneath that ) and I like to keep things organized " where I use them and what makes sense for me," but I can't have everything in the cabinet .... it would just drive me nuts....😉🙂😁

I’m getting there. I’ve gotten rid of so much stuff. I had half my dinning room cluttered with crafts. I boxed it all up and gave it to my granddaughters. We are talking a thousands of dollars worth of stuff! I’ve gotten rid of stuff I never thought I would part with. I’ve donated so much to charity and even took 2 truckloads to the dump. I’m still at it and my house is starting to look amazing. Thank you!

Decluttering really is getting rid of things you know you will not use again. My rule is if I get rid of it I am NOT buying it again, so I better be sure.

Yes, with the amount of inflation going on right now, I'd agree that it would be better to find and dedicate a box or bin for craft things that you already have. I recently bought a craft starter kit for my preschooler and it stays in one of her drawers. We started a scrap box for all the reusable scraps and have another box that we throw empty toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, plastic cups, etc., in to be used for craft projects to help us keep the costs lowered. When that box is full, it's time to make more crafts!

Some suggestions: Buy only what is functional, If there are 3/4 ppl in the family buy only 3/4 plates, bowls, cups, glasses, etc. Every corner of home doesn't need furniture. Just a few suggestions, but most important everyone work as a team to maintain the house/home

When it comes to linens (like towels and bedsheets) they recommend 3 per person; one that's being used, one that's in the dirty laundry, and one for backup for those 'just in case' situations. I'd recommend this for dishes, utensils and glassware, too. I can't imagine only having a single cup, plate and fork to use per person every single day. How would that person eat or drink while their dish was in the dishwasher? Cleaning off the dinner plate and drying it off in order to serve dessert is doable, but sounds like an unnecessary hassle.

I just don't know how to begin and I'm going to start with your 30 day challenge! That picture of your garage... That's my entire house, my business office and my cars. Depression from divorce and custody got me cluttered and the clutter keeps me depressed.
Single dad of 2 amazing kids, self employed and no help from anyone. Only ridicule. I have to work, take to school, pick up from school, band practice, football games, work very late due to the mid day of pickup from school, try to cook, laundry, divide my time to spend with people... I wake up at 2/3 am and typically go to sleep at about 10pm.
I JUST! DON'T! KNOW! WHAT! TO! DO!
I will try your 30 day challenge and see if I can get anything accomplished.

I will always be grateful to Flylady because she taught me to make my bed. I must as soon as I get out of it, pull the covers up and straighten them. I have formed the habit so now I never leave the bedroom in the a.m. unless I make the bed. It is such a good thing to do. There is no more having to go to sleep at night and finding you have to make the bed before getting into it.

You so remind me of my daughter! Her husband is like the forth child, hahaha. She’s a beautiful woman just like you! Minus the dimples. Don’t worry, be happy and just love those children. It’s over before you can imagine and they will remember the love not the mess. Keep as much order as possible but set the important priorities. Spending time with each child keeping communication flowing, taking them to church, the park, etc. …..remember that the Bible even says; Love covers a multitude of sins
That was great comfort to me during those messy middle years with my four. Oh yeah, try not to compare yourself to others. There’s always an opportunity to do that especially when you run into a gal that “seems” to be perfect. Be you and thank the Father for making you with your special gifts.

I just decluttered my linen closet (which was an overflowing, hot mess!). I took everything out, and only put in matching towel sets I needed, sheet sets I needed, etc and it looks wonderful and is so functional now! The PILES of leftover items will be donated or tossed (as appropriate). I’m doing this with my entire house!!!

The key is starting and starting small. Find one surface and clear it off. The number one problem people do is trying to have a garage sale. Donate or throw it out. If the item is valuable enough put it on the marketplace. Putting out my clothes the night before and pulling out the frozen meat for dinner the next day makes me pick up the bedroom at night and think organization for the next day. It makes the next morning go well. Lastly, not every drawer/space needs to have something in it. I'm in my fifties and just figured this out in the past ten years. One other thing, it's destructive to keep measuring yourself against others. Challenge yourself and enjoy the progress you have made.
