  • Want to see live music in an intimate, comfortable and friendly environment? Try a house concert. House concerts are becoming an important source of touring income and exposure for independent musicians, and a cozy, grassroots way for audiences to enjoy and support live music.
Samantha Wareing explains the history, philosophy and practice behind her Berlin Sofa Salon house concert series. Within the 3 gifts, 4 benefits and 5 rules of house concerts, Wareing formulates a simple, flexible organisational model of house concerts anyone can follow. Her house concerts encourages both artist and audience to be more present, allowing direct communication and a shared intimacy. Creating a space for presence and intimacy is an effective tool for community-building - while supporting independent musicians. Samantha Wareing is a Berlin-based musician, creative producer and entrepreneur whose passion for storytelling and community has led her to work in Australia and Europe as a touring musician, an arts publicist, a music, language and creativity teacher, podcaster, booker and music event curator. After moving from Australia to Germany in 2009, Samantha created a solo songwriting project, Wasp Summer, which she independently booked and toured through Australia and 14 different European countries. She is a founder and curator of Berlin’s acclaimed Sofa Salon house concert series which has, since 2010, hosted over 75 house concerts supporting independent musicians. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
