Tibetan Rites are highly recommendable and besides the movement the breathing is essential. This should never be through the mouth as is shown in this instruction. Nose breathing when inhaling and exhaling is key to receive the benefits of the rites. Good luck!
Which direction do you spin on the first rite/exercise ? When doing rite nr. 2, do you exhale when lifting the legs/head or do you exhale ? So the inhalation and exhalation should be always done via the nose ? The author of the book never mentioned anything about breathing...
Thank you so much for your great, clear and simple explanations about the movements of the Tibetan Rites. It is a great resource to share with other, I appreciate the time you have put into this! Thank you ❤
I have gone the past 21 day challenge .I'm up to 13. proud of myself as I'm 57. The first week I wanted to give up . As all my joint were aching . But mind told me don't give up. It will get better .
The fives rites is really helping me with life ups ans downs . I had some difficult new last week. But this week I have clarity . And realise I'm better off . And other people opinion of me Does not define me .
Thanks! Inhale and exhale for 2, 4 and 5 are just the opposite somewhere else…but as you do makes more sense to me because usually when you practice sport you exhale when you use your muscles and inhale when you prepare your shot…Who is right?
@@RyanHowesNorthernVertical You are simply superb. I have one doubt about rotations. There is so much confusion about rotations from left to right hand or right to the left hand. I saw in some other videos, some are said left to right that is clockwise, some are said, right to left that is anti clockwise. Some of our friends were written comments in other videos there are some side effects if we do it in the wrong direction. Some are said they are mentally affected. Actually, I am doing yoga daily. I am very interest to do your 5 Tibet rites. Kindly provide clarification about rotations rite. Once again thanks a lot for your response.
Thanks for the video. I have noticed that many people are concerned about breathing pattern... I am writing to them. Yoga means connecting body and mind with breathing working as bridge between two. Also in Sadhana Pada and Patanjali’s documentation on yoga says that right posture should be such that you can’t feel your body. In any posture if you can feel your body, that posture is not good and need adjustment either through body or breathing ... so stick to natural breathing that suits you... constantly reminding yourself about breathing during yoga session will distract your mind more. It’s the withdrawal and silence which is most required in your mind while practising yoga. Hope this helps.
Good instruction, but The Rites are done for a maximum of 21 repetitions. It is advised to begin at 3 repetitions....and increase by two after a week or so of doing the 3 reps daily. So the first week or so you do 3 reps, then the second week or so you do 5 reps, but keep doing the 5 until it isn't challenging, only then increase. If someone new to the Rites thinks that they will be able to do 21 reps in 21 days that is unlikely unless they are already an advanced yogi or other equivalents. This is a beneficial long term exercise, not a quick fix or '21 day challenge'.
@@RyanHowesNorthernVertical you're welcome, but to make sure you cater to all levels of fitness, it's best to follow the right guidelines. This is an ancient practice, with great health benefits, if done correctly.
Hi Rejendar, pardon the delayed response. My breathing philosophy is based on choice. Do what feels right to you, whether that is an inhale or exhale. This gives you ownership in the practice versus someone telling you to do this and do that.
@@RyanHowesNorthernVertical Well, i believe that breathing need follow the movement, if one are doing wrong, the body accert itself in some point, to do it right.
Tell me more about that...does it cause discomfort in a particular area of your body? Or, is there of weakness in the arms or core? There are adjustments that can help.
I think the second rite is not right with inhale and exhale. I compared few youtube movies and it says in most cases that you should inhale when you put your legs up, and exhale when you put your leg and neck down to the floor. Breathing is very important so let get this straight (?)
Hey thanks for the video, I've been researching the 5 rites and came across your video. Just a quick question with rite 2 you breath out while lifting your legs and breath in while lowering yourself back to the ground, its the first time I seen it done like this, every other suggestion I've come across is breath in while lifting and breath out while lowering so just wondering why you do it your way? Also, I really like the hands behind head tip for rite 1 :) Thanks
Hey Josh, thanks for taking the time to reach out and glad you're practicing. Intuitively, my breathing practice dictates when I inhale and exhale. I believe that there is no right or wrong direction of breath given the movement. Surely there are people who would disagree with me :) When working with people one-on-one, I talk about finding "your breath" and to listen to what your body wants. Quite simply, is it more comfortable / flowing to inhale or exhale through this movement? So I would direct that question to you my friend. Try it both ways and allow your body to decide. Best to you, RYAN
Thanks for the reply Ryan and your explanation which makes perfect sense. I believe in the original book that introduced the 5 rites to the western world 'The eye of revelation' by Peter Kelder it had no mention of breathing with each rite at all so yup makes sense to do it how you feel is best. Thanks
@@M13x13M Yes, I have tried it the way the book describes. In a world where everyone has a way of doing something, I take the liberty to move and breathe in a way that intuitively feels good to me. That's both a personal philosophy and what I teach my clients. You can see from various comments throughout this 21-Day Series that both movement and breath feedback have been solicited. There are many who site the book, there are many who cannot perform Rites 4 and 5 due to weaknesses and arthritis. I don't think of the 5 Rites as a strict "way" of doing, rather an opportunity to experience the body, breath and movement to cultivate a healthy mind and body. I have been a professional athlete and practitioner of various movement modalities for my career and feel strongly that the end goal is to feel good. Thanks again for watching and your thoughts. Would love to practice these but I have painful osteoarthritis in my wrists and shoulders. Pressure on these really aggravate the condition. Is there any options, building excercises or trick I can use to eventually be able to do rites #4 & 5 ?
I find making fists and using my knuckes rather than flat hands helps. Also doing some extra wrist stretches after. google yoga pose options for downward dog and table top. Sometimes it can be just starting out with what you can do and working from there, too.

anne robinson I watched another video that said it’s the opposite of Hatha yoga. I guess to get the true answer you’d have to go to the original source.
Hi Anne, yes I have heard this many times and thank you for sharing :) Breathing in the way you mentioned does not feel natural for me and I am of the philosophy that we can chose to breath in or out as we please, even though the books or Tibetans may teach it otherwise.
Thank you. Very good guidance! I am just beginning this. I have been doing a mild version of my own of yoga poses. My question... I have a hard time with table! I can only get up about ha;lf way because of shoulder and neck issues. Are there any modifications or suggestions on how to build into this? I would really appreciate it.
Toni! So glad to hear from you. My advice with Table Pose is to start with your hands and feet slightly wider than shown in the videos to gain a more solid base. Bend both knees, bringing your feet closer to your body with foot bottoms already planted on the floor. Exhale as your core rises up just slightly off the floor and inhale as you return to the floor. Go slowly and in time your body will heal. Best, RYAN
Good video. I lost 30 pounds last year but the gym is sooo boring to me. I like 5 rites because it is just 5. Question. Do you have a video on alternative rites for beginners? I still am very overweight and simply cannot YET do some of these.i hope to get to 21 reps in time. Ready to start again.
Hi Denise, my apologies for not getting back to you much, much sooner. Congratulations to losing 30 lbs!!! So happy for you. These Rites truly nourish me. I want to help you. Which Rites are you finding most challenging? I have received feedback about Rites 4 and 5. They are surely challenging. My recommendation for Rite 4 is to go half-way into Table. With practice, you will build more strength and reach 21 full repetitions. And for Rite 5, I recommend aiming for seven reps, rest, and repeat two times. Let me know how else I can help. ryan@northernvertical.com
Hi Antonella, I recommend placing a rolled towel under palm of your hand as close to the base of the palm where it meets the wrist. This will help to achieve a straight wrist. Your wrist pain is likely due to pressure on the small wrist bones as they are bent in a 90-110 degree angle.
Thanks for your comment, Nono. I generally receive two types of comments from the video series: 1) great instruction, and 2) what's up with the breathing?! My opinion, which I could talk about in future videos, is that breathing does not have a prescription of when to inhale and when to exhale. In my day to day working with people, teaching breathing techniques is about intuition. Any thoughts on this, Nono?
