Howard Wimshurst I agree both visual and in audio. He was definitely the right actor for this film. He truly sounds and looked like a complete crazy person.
This is one of my favorite movie scenes. It really shows Bale's acting chops. In this short clip, he went through like 20 different emotions, and merged them seamlessly.
About 15 years ago, a friend of mine left a message on my phone. Would you believe he recited this scene word for word, with the emotion to back it up. The funny thing was I had no seen the movie at the time of receiving his message, so you can imagine how confused I was. I lost it when he told me to keep my eyes open then hung up.
I just realized that his lawyer probably thought that his crying and sniffing sounds were just Bateman trying to hold in his laughter, solidifying his belief that it was all just a prank
The funny thing about this is that the lawyer tried to find a way around this confession and I personally believe Bateman did kill all those people except the chainsaw scene and this scene. The reason why I say this is because the lawyer told him (who he thought was Davis) that the joke he made about Bateman killing all those people was funny but in this scene he clearly called the lawyer saying "Hello Carns, its Bateman, Patrick Bateman". He clearly introduced himself. So it is pretty clear to me that the lawyer purposely tried to mistake Bateman for Davis to let him get away and not hand himself over as it would damage the company image.
I always felt like he kind of WANTED to be caught. Not because he's actually ashamed of what he's done, but more so because he's sick of living in the vapid, shallow lifestyle he is stuck in.
yea basically, he confessed, his lawyer didn’t take him serious, also by “but even after admitting this, there is no catharsis. I love this scene because you can hear Bale’s British accent slip out for a second when he’s getting emotional. listen to 0:27 ! You can especially hear it in “girlfriend” “nail gun” and “man”
well a fake accent can be hard to maintain when you're acting all emotional like that. for a long time, I didn't even realize Bale isn't American cuz his accent is so good; it wasn't until years after Batman begins when i saw an interview with him on TV in his British accent that I realized he's not American
This has got to be some of Bale’s best work. It’s one thing to play a villain who’s just maniacal and chews the scenery. But here he plays someone who’s terrifying, pathetic, funny, unsettling, and occasionally almost normal, sometimes all in the same scene. Shoulda gotten an Oscar nomination for this.
Christian Bale doesn't even have a Welsh accent? His natural accent is English. He's said in countless interviews he's not Welsh. He's English and was born to two English parents who happened to briefly be in Wales at the time of his birth. He left Wales at age 2 (so not even time to pick up an accent) and went back to England.
Christian Bale is one helluva actor. His performance as Patrick Bateman is probably one of my all time favorite performances in a film. There are so many memorable moments in this film and this is one of them.
I like that you start to think he’s feeling remorse and guilt for what he’s done and then he says “I’m not sure I’m gonna get away with it this time” and you realise he only cares about himself
I wonder if they did this all in one take. They just gave Bale the scene, shot it once, saw the footage, and they were like, “this is all we need.” CAUSE BALE IS THAT GOOD OF AN ACTOR
This is one of those films where its up to the audience if he really killed those people or not. I believe he really did kill Paul Allen, and all those girls. His lawyer at the end mistook him for Davis, and also THOUGHT he recently had dinner with Paul. In my interpretation, Patrick Bateman has two personalities. His "normal self" that he shows to the public, in which he has an obsession with fitting in with society and being just like everybody else. His "psychotic" side is his true personality which is a person who has turned insane from his over obsession with "fitting in" with society. In reality, Patrick hates himself for what he has become but knows he won't stop, which makes him hate himself even more. He takes this hate on everyone he believes deserves it. He preys on the poor/weak (because they are easy and do not belong in a working community) and people just as ignorant and self centered as he is (such as the prostitutes and his friend Elizabeth) He spared Jean because she represents everything he has always wanted to be. Someone who actually has dreams for the future, and has a passion in trying to become a better person. Which makes her stand out and unique from everyone in the society he lives in. Making her an "outsider" if you will.. He also ended up sparing Lewis (the gay guy) because he "in the last minute" showed Patrick who he really was, which is a homosexual. Someone who also would be considered an outsider from his society. So he basically targets random people he meets that he believes in his twisted mind are a plague to the possibility of a better society. The only events I believe didn't happen was him killing the old lady and the explosion of the police cars. At this point he has seriously lost his will to know reality from whatever is in his head.
also i think that he didnt kill Lewis b/c Lewis never mistook him for someone else which helped spare him from patricks pyscho side, and he was gay so patrick's shallow public personality was just disgusted by the whole situation.
If you read the book you will find that you are about 99% correct on your assumptions, very good. However, in the scene with Jean in his appartment, in the book it was just a prostitute, and if I remember correctly he actually did kill her with the nail gun.
I can give you one reason why the kills are real. In once scene in the movie, the scene where he has sex with those two women. The one that escapes runs, and when she's running she opens a closet and finds to two dead girls in it. Now throughout the movie you only are seeing Patrick's perspective. So when you don't see the girl in front of you, and only see what she's seeing means that you're seeing the perspective of not Patrick. Which means that she reacted to it as well. Now you might say, well Patrick might've imagined it. Well even more proof for you. A psychopath doesn't see or imagine this, because of how crazy they're it makes them want to see it. So it urges them on, and when they just can't take that feeling anymore they do it, because they want to see and feel what it's like for them to personally try it. So the body wouldn't need to, it wants them to. You can even look up stuff about psychopaths, and this is a true fact. Another thing I noticed you say is that he has two personalities. Every psychopath has two personalities. One of them is what you see on the outside, they don't want anyone else to see what they truly are. The other personality is when they just can't take it anymore, and just want to do what their mind tells them to do. So yes, you're correct. Patrick does kill his victims in the book and movie.
For those who haven’t read the novel, in this scene, Patrick actually lists some of the murders that took place in the book (in very very gruesome detail btw) that didn’t make it to the film.
True like when he mentions “some fagg*t with a dog” he may not be talking about the black homeless guy because I remember in the book he killed another guy with a dog and it was very disturbing details.
After the cast and crew saw the movie, they realized how brilliant his acting is. Bale is such a good actor, they didn't realize that it was Patrick Bateman who was the bad actor, pretending to be a normal human. Bale was playing Bateman, who was trying to be a human. So Bateman's over acting, everyone thought was Bale's over acting. Except for the director, she knew exactly what was going on.
I don't think Patrick was hallucinating his murders. I think they were real & in the end were cleaned up the the person he called. The realtor's reaction to Patrick when she realizes who he is confirms it. Everyone around Patrick knows there's something off about him. They choose to ignore & enable his behavior
@@pizzapartynightmarez393 I highly doubt a real life Patrick Bateman would have instagram.... then again, maybe he would. He always is trying to fit in, after all.

1:38 Bale was a great Batman, but man he could have been an incredible Joker.
Completely agree
Now let’s see paul Allen’s joker
Just like Michael Keaton, great Batman, but his performance as Beetle Juice tells me he’d also be great at Joker.
Love the way says Paul Allen, as he hates him by just saying his name. lol
How did he not even get a nomination for his performance? This scene alone is worthy Enough!
This scene alone shows more range and talent than Russell Crowe’s entire performance in Gladiator.
0:48 he forgor 💀
😭🙏🏻
I love his pause before he mentions the brain eating. He's truly reflecting on himself in that moment and he doesn't know if he likes what he sees. 💯
No, it's about taking off the mask that he has worked so hard to build. A psycho never truly reflects.
@@dartmada9733 I completely agree!
The way he enthusiastically say "I just had to kill alot of people" is probably my favorite line
I love the way it sounds when he says it, is very iconic.
@@davidgreyson2822 I love his voice and his smile when he says it. It's kind of cute 😭 But I guess I'm a pretty sick gal...
You can hear his Welsh accent slip out when he says "I killed another girl" at 0:35.
Good observation!
Yes I heard it too 😂😂
Alexandar Vasileski I noticed that too
his accent is naturally english. and as an english person who lives close to the welsh border, it doesn't sound welsh at all.
Let's see Paul Allen's murder confessions.
Christian Bale is one helluva actor. His performance as Patrick Bateman is probably one of my all time favorite performances in a film. There are so many memorable moments in this film and this is one of them.
Christian Bale. An acting legend.
based pfp
1:27 "Balanced diet."
He totally deserved an oscar nomination for this movie.
Love the little shrug at 2:09 😂😂😂😂
This is what Batffleck should be confessing to after BvS.
Every live action batman including bale
Agreed every live action batman has killed.
That is bullshit, and you know it. And no, it's not funny.
Omar Alor ahaha i think the exactly thing
How it feels calling in sick
The way he keeps switching from terror to amusement is amazing
00:55 he's not regretting killing Paul Allen
Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman is definitely some of the best acting I’ve ever seen. One of my favorite films ever.
For that scene alone, Bale deserved at least one Oscar
I like that you start to think he’s feeling remorse and guilt for what he’s done and then he says “I’m not sure I’m gonna get away with it this time” and you realise he only cares about himself
what an insane performance bruh his acting skills r crazy
"And uh...Paul Allen! I killed Paul Allen with an AXE in the FACE!"
And now he’s dissolving in a BATHTUB at HELLS KITCHEN!
His acting is great on here
0:26 Nice reference to the Novel.
Very nice. Let's see Paul Allen's murder confession.
100% sure this inspired Heath Ledger. From 2:16 until the end, the way he says "Keep your eyes... open !"
One thing is for sure, a politician would never own up to his or her crimes like that.
I wonder if they did this all in one take.
They just gave Bale the scene, shot it once, saw the footage, and they were like, “this is all we need.”
CAUSE BALE IS THAT GOOD OF AN ACTOR
I read somewhere that the director had him do this scene over and over again to break him down, and he got better with each take.
i hope he got some award for this performance cause what he does in this scene is simply stunning, outstanding
1:38 Travis Scott calling his lawyer after the Astroworld concert
He preys on the poor/weak (because they are easy and do not belong in a working community) and people just as ignorant and self centered as he is (such as the prostitutes and his friend Elizabeth)
He spared Jean because she represents everything he has always wanted to be.
Reuben Filimaua 🙌🏻
also i think that he didnt kill Lewis b/c Lewis never mistook him for someone else which helped spare him from patricks pyscho side, and he was gay so patrick's shallow public personality was just disgusted by the whole situation.
If you read the book you will find that you are about 99% correct on your assumptions, very good. However, in the scene with Jean in his appartment, in the book it was just a prostitute, and if I remember correctly he actually did kill her with the nail gun.
Doesn't explain how all the corpses in Paul Allen's apartment were gone.
Loved when he said Its psycho time, and psychoed all over the phone.
God this scene is just so good because this man is such a great actor
I ate some of their brains... And I tried to cook a little...
I love how hes totally aware of his own insanity
“You’re my lawyer so I think you should know I’ve killed a lot of people”
Oscar worthy acting, laugh out loud funny, incredibly disturbing, and thought provokingly ambiguous.
What an excellent scene
For those who haven’t read the novel, in this scene, Patrick actually lists some of the murders that took place in the book (in very very gruesome detail btw) that didn’t make it to the film.
Fun fact: most of the murders he mentions are real scenes in the book that were way, way too violent to put in the movie
There was no way in hell they could have done the nail gun rat one
True like when he mentions “some fagg*t with a dog” he may not be talking about the black homeless guy because I remember in the book he killed another guy with a dog and it was very disturbing details.
This might sound weird but this is probably my favourite scene in the whole movie, even despite all the countless other great ones.
1:03 Hells kitchen huh, gordon is spicing up the recipes
It’s a neighborhood in manhattan
i love this scene and i love this performance. can’t believe the cast and crew thought he was a bad actor during filming
Did they?
@@pajtimo23 yea i think it’s in an interview
After the cast and crew saw the movie, they realized how brilliant his acting is. Bale is such a good actor, they didn't realize that it was Patrick Bateman who was the bad actor, pretending to be a normal human. Bale was playing Bateman, who was trying to be a human. So Bateman's over acting, everyone thought was Bale's over acting. Except for the director, she knew exactly what was going on.
@@abovewater6918 i knew that already
I don't think Patrick was hallucinating his murders. I think they were real & in the end were cleaned up the the person he called. The realtor's reaction to Patrick when she realizes who he is confirms it. Everyone around Patrick knows there's something off about him. They choose to ignore & enable his behavior
1:01 would love to see Gordon Ramsay finding out.
He would say it’s raw

It's pretty haunting to think people like Bateman actually exist...
There is only an idea of a Patrick Bateman. He is simply not there.
The closest person to a real life Patrick Bateman would have to be James Alefantis (check out his Instagram Photos)...
@@pizzapartynightmarez393 I highly doubt a real life Patrick Bateman would have instagram.... then again, maybe he would. He always is trying to fit in, after all.

Incredible performance by Bale!
1:40 my fav bit right there
I love how he got away from a GTA 3 star cop chase lol.
He was only 26 in this movie, one of the best actors of our generation
really? im 26 wtf am i doing with my life
Yeah he was 25-26 years old when this movie shooting
This movie, an outrageous display of his talent, and obviously good looks.
Impressive, very nice. Let's see Paul Allen's phone call.
The delivery of “I’m not sure I’m going to get away with it this time” is so amazing it somehow manages to make me feel devastated for a man I know is a truly terrible person
Unbelievable Bale didn’t get an Oscar nomination for this role.
Yeah, I mean… Christian Bale is just something else. The way he nailed this character is beyond my understanding.
1:36 - 1:46 This scene proves that Christian Bale can play a better Joker than Jared Leto's entire Joker performance in Suicide Squad. Heck, he might even do it better than Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill and maybe even Heath Ledger. Why? Because not only was he creepy in this scene but he might have been even funny. The Joker in the Batman comics is both creepy and funny at the same time. Having said that, Christian Bale should have got an Emmy/award for his performance in this movie. After all, this his was best performance in a movie.
Should have gotten an Oscar för this role, this scene in particular. The wide spectrum of emotions, and it's effects, like sweating and gasping for breath, he displays in this one scene is mindblowing. Panic, angst, fear, pride, joy, desperation and the list goes on and on, is absolutely amazing.
The happiness when he says paul allen
