Can you do a tutorial video on how to install Windows 98 Second Edition in VMware? I was always trying to install the sound driver I was always installing for Windows 95, 98 and ME, and it doesn't work for me in the original Windows 98 (First Edition).

If you add a floppy drive and use a Windows 98 boot floppy image.
You can fdisk the drive and add partitions as required. reboot the VM
Once partitions are added you can format the disk with the /s operator then make a directory on c called Win98. open that folder and then change to the CD drive letter that contains the Windows 98 image and copy the contents of the Win98 folder into the Win98 folder you made on your hard drive then run setup from the C drive.
If you do that Win98 will never ask you for the Windows 98 CD, it will always copy files from the Win98 folder it installed from.
I tried it ... Ryzen 2700x windows 10 1909 latest and vmware pro 15.5 here and i get stuck on the last setup boot where you choose your timezone with errors in explorer, shell32 and regsvr32 as well .. tried many stuff including 1gb ram, enable virtualization, vmware 12 compatibility or even disable advanced memory paging but its not working ... I wish you had your system specs written

After finally being able to install it, I get a "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer". What should I do??
Fortunately, I have Windows 98 on a PC next to my modern PC, so I just use that! :P
At around 2:25, you might want to add an annotation to remind dummies like me, to click in the VM area BEFORE they start trying to type on the keyboard. Even though I knew that I should do that, I forgot, and of course the keyboard didn't respond. It took me quite a while to figure out what I'd done wrong. :-)

what could be the good VM98 for XP? i need Win98 for my scanner, i dont need for games i dont need sound drivers, just running 98 is good enough
I use Virtualbox and it works fine
For me vbox says kernel drivers not installed

But how do you make the screen bigger or is always gonna be that small. I have second addition of 98 on a vm and it's too small
Install VMware Tools....the one he says is "optional". It really isn't. It will fix your small window problem! :)

@@typhoon9235 I'd say it's finicky, because when I set the resolution and clicked full screen on VMware, it didn't work at first. But clicked the FS button again (to shrink window), click FS once more it then filled my entire screen.
NOTE: I'm using my laptop which has a vertical height of 768px. That's what I set the resolution to, no bigger. VM Tools took care of the width. Good luck!
Idk if I. Should be asking here but whenever I try to install windows 98 in vbox or vmware when installing I always encounter missing dll errors and a “this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down” error. anyone know a fix

Once I get to the bit around 8:15 I set my time zone of course but then once it does that final install stuff just after I get a crazy bunch of illegal operations. Rundll32, Explorer, Regsvr32.. dozens of them. Would this be a bad ISO or a problem with my computer itself and they're just not talking? I have an AMD Ryzen 5 6 core processor, I've read AMD can be a bit finnicky on VM. Any advice would be appreciated, this has really sapped the will to live from me.

Unfortunately, no, I never found a fix. Just an explanation that modern hardware does not enjoy Windows 98, particularly AMD cards. So I just installed Windows 2000 SP4 and that works pretty well.
@@bobob4477 Hey, I can help you minimize the errors. To do that you need to choose SATA instead of IDE as the hard drive type and the errors will be less (they will only appear occasionally)!

When I tried to do it it went crazy by closing setup due to it doing illegal operation and then a ton of dll errors and when I restarted it explorer was closed due to an illegal operation. Please help.
You need to grab a Windows 98 CD ROM file and put it into the floppy disc under virtual machine settings, will probably have to shut down the virtual machine first and add a floppy disc :)

@Cage of Pixels, that doesn't work as I moved my Windows 98 SE VM from my old PC to the new one and the problem happens only on the new one. After a bit of digging, it seems that Windows 98 VMs hate AMD Ryzen CPUs. It works perfect on my old PC with its AMD FX chip.
Why does mine keep saying "no file bootname received" and "Operating system not found"
You will need the boot disk, he used a OEM Copy that is bootable.

Man I can help go into your computers bios and enable amd svm (cpu virtualization) after, restart computer the problem is solved if you dont know how to open bios write your pc’s brand and model I will say how to open bios

Are you doing it from within the virtual machine or out of the virtual machine?

it's impossible to download win98 today because it has this specific error with "Program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" so don't waste your time trying to figure out on how to download win98.

I had the same issue.
I don't know your PC but according to my research is the problem with modern Ryzen based AMD CPU's that don't work well with older versions of Windows and causing it write a bunch of nonsense.
@@rynobehnke8289 I think it is somethings to do with modern amd as a whole. I don't have a a risen but I do have an amd.
@@spamtongspamton3422 I wouldn't be surprised if the problem is inherent to a peace of AMD CPU architecture that most of there modern CPU's share.
At and rate does it really suck that because of this we can't properly have Windows 9X Virtual machines.
