Near perfect presentation and order of installation. Only caveat is the mouse driver is a broken link now on CNET website (the download was removed for the mouse). But mouse already works generically. Thanks for the hard work I Know went into making this. I've been trying to install my SE on VMWare for a long time. This instruction (and accompanying links) did the job nicely. Finally my investment of software can be brought back to fruition again!!!😀

The only bad thing if your CPU is AMD Ryzen is getting error on Windows 98 Setup being finishing the installation of Windows 98.

I made it to the Windows 98SE desktop and then got a "this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" message. I believe this is due to my host CPU. Is there a way to use the VMware command prompt to change my guest / virtual CPU? THANKS!

On VirtualBox, the Guest Additions don't work for Windows 98 - perhaps not compatible. Do you know if the VMTools still support Windows 98? Or will I be missing drivers like on VirtualBox?

Thanks Philip for the brilliant video. I wonder if you can put up a small video or step guide, how to install parallel port. I have a dongle and it can be only mounted on the parallel port. Cheers.

I've never used a parallel port before and don't have any old hardware to test it with.

I'm literally going insane because I can't make vmware tools working, if I just press "install vmware tools" nothing happens, and if I try to manually type "D:\setup.exe" it says that the drive doesn't exist. Please help?
EDIT: in the VM options I've set up "WinPre2k.iso" as CD drive path since a couple of people mentioned it. Still doesn't work.

    Greetings @philipyip,
    Hope you're fine there Sir.
Any future plans to make a video on how to install Windows XP in VMware Workstation Player?
    Regards.

The problem with Windows XP is getting an installation ISO and Product Activation:
The Windows XP Professional Corporate Edition Activates Offline on any PC.
The Windows XP Professional Retail ISO Requires Phone Activation with a Retail Key.
The Dell Windows XP Professional Pro OEM ISO will only activate in a VM if a custom bios440 ROM is used.

Thanks for the video. I have a few questions. Why did you install direct x, main etc separately? Does the install screw up if no? Did you resolve the pci peripheral conflict? Does the version of vmware effect the install (vmware 5.0 vs 15 for hardware? I'm trying to get my logitech dual action game pad to work and it's not detecting it.) This maybe the version of usb drivers (I have two installs one for vmware and oracles virtual box (works and it's a 2.0 install); I think I have installed the universal usb 3.6 update. Thanks.

I haven't tried Windows 98 on a newer version of VMware workstation player. I no longer work at the university where we were using it for the purpose to connect to a legacy scientific instrument.

Is it Logitech mouse drivers even if you don't have a Logitech mouse? Thanks for uploading the video! ... I needed help because my Win98 VM always gets soiled before it's done with everything ... I don't even know how or why ... it's been acting up now with multiple Win98 VMs for hours.

@@philipyip1988 Hi, Mouse and Sound and things work now :) ... I do however have one concern ... after I was done installing everything suddenly my disk drive stopped working ... it said "Device is not ready". It's still there and I'm still able to 'insert' the iso I created myself with all of your files from the video on it, but no other CDs (like games) work and they DID before installing everything.
So I'm wondering what happened? And how can I fix this? :( Hoping you have a solution. The Disk Drive is basically not recognized or something.
