Robert wrote this song after losing a good friend to an overdose, who, up to the end claimed they were fine, no problem. If you look up the lyrics, some of them have the last line of the first section as "Don't you wanna cook it, cook it, cook it?" but you can clearly hear him sing "Don't you want it, cocaine, cocaine, cocaine?" There's other lyrics like "next stop's underground", "fate deals a losing hand", and "On the balance of a crystal/Paying through the nose." and that's when you hear the big snorting (coke), almost growling sound. They didn't perform it live until their tribute concert in 2007 at the O2.

@@fishoutofwaterseries1424 Yep, it was all about Robert's growing dissatisfaction with ever increasing hard drug use going on. He clearly sees the person is spiraling; they're faking being ok but they're "feeling emotion second hand" and they "didn't plan it - over ran it". He tells her, "When you fake it baby, you're faking it for your life". Robert didn't often do serious lyrics but seemed to get more into commentary on his experiences later in Zep's career.

As huge as a fan I am of them..........this is the only album that didn't do a whole lot for me. To me it just doesn't have the same creativity of the other albums.

Robert had just had his recent accident in Greece, was in a ton of pain, and almost lost his wife as well. He had to record from a wheelchair, and some doctors thought he might not walk again, as he'd broken his leg and ankle.
So Jimmy was under a shitload of pressure to get an album out, had limited time in the studio, had to work 18 hour days, and the strain almost fractured the whole enterprise.
When this lp was released, I felt the same way you did. But realizing the back story to this, there is almost a kind of aura of weariness. So my respect for this band had been elevated, for the true professionals that they were, and still are in some cases.
