Robert Plant has stated in a interview that this song is about a lifelong female friend who got strung out on drugs.

Yep freebasing. Got him freebasing the 75 tour. It was too much for him. When you listen to 75 boots, by march Plant started to get over the cold/flu, and they ended the tour pretty strong. I’d say plant ended the tour with “coke” voice.

One interesting thing about Presence is that this is the only album with no keyboards played by John Paul Jones at all, so it is pure guitar shredding 🎸

Agreed. Sadly, the next one showed how much they had declined in the three years in between. Presence contains the last great performances of all the band, especially Jimmy Page.

By the way, that’s not slide, that’s Jimmy banging on the whammy bar… So let’s talk!… I worshiped this band in the 70s having first seen them live in 72. I wore a Zeppelin T-shirt every single day of my life which I’m sure made others ill lol… And in many ways I still worship the band, but the bottom line is we’re all moved very differently by the music we hear… I absolutely hated For your life when I first heard it back in 1976. I guess for me it was a matter of… why are we not getting black dog or stairway or communication break down or whole Lotta love anymore?… I didn’t like Plants dreary vocals, and I just couldn’t get with the song… through the years, I’ve come to appreciate it much more, although it’s still far from one of my favorites… BUT!… I was privileged to see the final Zeppelin reunion in London in 2007 and it was the only time in their history they ever played this song… And you know what? I can honestly say it was the BEST song of the whole night! Maybe part novelty, but also something about this song really came alive on stage. Plus Plant at that age could no longer pull off things like the immigrant song, but he nailed this song live. And the riff sounded HUGE!… If you haven’t checked it out, you should take a look at it from the Celebration Day DVD ❤

I visited the Royal Orleans hotel when I was on my honeymoon down in the French Quarter in New Orleans. In fact, we ate in the Rib Room. Real old school antebellum luxury and splendor. You can see why Zep would stay in a place like that.
Just around the corner is the Old Absinthe House bar, a historic opium den which is where pirate Jean LaFitte met with Andrew Jackson to form an alliance against the British in the War of 1812. When you walk in, it strikes you that its the same decor featured on the cover art of Zeppelin's In Through the Outdoor album.
Jimmy Page loved to visit there while in New Orleans, and that was the inspiration for the cover. Over the years, he has jammed there with local guitarist Mason Ruffner, who opened for The Firm on some of their eighties dates.

Nice Work! It took me many years to try to piece together these lyrics, Dev you did a great job upon first listen. For us semi old timers. we did not get lyrics till the dawn of the internet, for some would have access to an obscure book or even interviews to reveal lyrics to a lot of bands. "The Purists" were just about ONLY restricted to the music (and our imagination) and my friends and I were all over the place with the lyrics of this song we just knew it sounded COOL! Knowing the lyrics today Dev is practically right on, It is a song about growing OUT of the lifestyle of the 70's and since Robert wrote a lot about relationships. Was he settling down a bit, growing up.? You don't need legs to sing well! 2:03 Dev's statement on "chronic pain" hits home. The reason I am YouTubing as much as I do, in 2012 (almost mistyped 2112) I went in for a routine umbilical hernia repair procedure and left with chronic abdomen pain ever since and let's just say I have a new understanding and respect for what women go through every month. We need to stand by OUR Women a hell of a lot more, especially these days! You share, I share. No apologies needed I am getting better! @ 3:41 Robert (I believe) is saying "Don't you wanna cook it cook it cook it" I thought he was saying "Do you want co-coc-cocaine". as I got older the song seems more about aging sexual relationships. I might have believed in Mike's interpretation of a song about drugs, however reading the lyrics even today, I am with Dev more so. Rock lyrics are SO very vague. Royal Orleans is supposedly about John Bonham picking up a man who he thought was a woman. in New Orleans when in town. "Take your pick. be careful how you choose it" "Whiskers" Thanks again!

A follow-up to my comments on For your life… I actually dig Royal Orleans way more! although that might not be a popular opinion lol… I love that song! And you might appreciate it more If you knew the story behind it. True story of John Paul Jones, unknowingly bringing a transvestite back to his hotel room at the Royal Orleans. Thats why Plant yells out ‘whiskers’ a couple of times during the song lol. And apparently at some point there was a fire in Jones‘s hotel room as well, which is mentioned in the song. Rock ‘n’ roll!
