This was the first Zep album I bought on release. I had just been introduced to the music of Zep and had overdosed on Physical Graffiti.
Whilst the album hasn't aged that well this song still sounds as awesome as it did that day in 76 when I bought it. Plants voice sounds better than ever, JPJ's bass playing driving it along. Pages multiple layers of genius.
And then there's Bonzo. More energy in his playing than can be heard in most others bands entire catalogue. Drumming to another level. Some of the fills on here take my breath away.

Yeah, Presence is way underrated. Most people focus on Page’s playing, but this album is ignored and it makes no sense because this is a guitar album front to back with some of Page’s most emotive and compositionally layered guitar parts in the catalog. Tea for One is some of his most melancholically beautiful and forlorn guitar work ever…can’t wait for that one.

“If they ever tell my story let them say that I walked with giants. Men rise and fall like the winter wheat, but these names will never die. Let them say I lived in the time of Hector, tamer of horses. Let them say I lived in the time of Achilles.” Robert, Jimmy, John and John were truly gods that once walked the earth. Nothing new to say but John Henry Bonham was a lovely stupendous freak of nature on the kit, Jonsey's pic is included in Websters fictionary next to the word "fluidity mastery gone-wild", Plant took his stunning gifts from the higher powers and from his hard labor and gifted society with mic dropping stuff never really heard before or since and Page didn't play fair, he played the electric guitar like they did up in the mountains in the 13th century 😮

I didn’t like this album when it came out but 40 years later I finally hear the genius. The emotion of Page’s guitar in Tea For One takes you to another dimension. This song, which I hated as a teenager, has aged like fine wine. It’s when you isolate the bass, drums and guitar and hear the interplay, do you finally get the tune, as famously put in one of their more well-known songs.

It's hard to speak succinctly about this song as so much is happening. The number of guitar overdubs is staggering. I believe it was Rick Derringer who stated Page was the most overworked guitarist in history, based on this song alone. You covered Bonham's contributions and I can tell which parts of the song are playing on the isolated drum track. Thanks for covering the context, history and cover song. This is what makes your treatment unique. Looking forward to Nobody's Fault but Mine, Hots on for Nowhere, and Tea for One. Also, thanks for introducing me to a couple of Rush albums. Also the young girl next to the teacher is the same child model featured on the cover of Houses of the Holy. Some thought it was Plant's daughter but its not. There's a feature about Hipgnosis, the cover art people, somewhere on You Tube which discusses this and interviews the woman who is now middle-aged.
I enjoy your thoughtful reviews and graphic art. I'd love to be able to hear your running commentary which is often muted. Its the contemporaneous reactions which tend to be the best.

I waited so long (in my head) for this album release to be met with critics saying Page was lackluster and dull and Plant had given up and had no voice left and Bonzo had lost his beat and JPJ had no direction....once again utterly wrong missed the whole point. When Robert and Jimmy finished the song they had a meeting with John and John and spent a couple of days explaining the song concept and let them write their part...put the finishing touches in the hands of the gods...lol...I loved loved loved it...but I thought there was no way they could ever play such a complex studio cut live....but they did of course....please listen to this live at Knebworth 79' LZ were not normal at all...Page dripping lackluster juice....hahahahahahahahahaha

In 1976, as RUSH was changing direction (after 2112), into a more progressive stance, Zep was also changing their sound into this guitar monstrosity. Being a huge Page fan, this is music to OUR ears!! This represented the future of the Led Zeppelin sound. It was raw and exciting and a glimpse of great music to come. There is some real cool Bass and Drum Isolated versions of Zeppelin music on the RUclipss and THIS song Isolated with just the drums and bass is amazeballs (as Mike starts playing isolated drums)!! Robert Plant and John Paul Jones would highlight their last studio album leaving Jimmy a bit sad. Was there a split starting, in the Band.?. John and Jimmy were hanging out more, celebrating while Robert and JPJ were more focused on the job at hand. The eighties were coming, and a more Pop style was becoming more popular, and Robert Plant leaned into that style as Jimmy was not so much. A lot of the early 70's partying style was gettin' old, and Zeppelin fell victim to those extremes. RIP. The 80's saw Hair Bands and Posers somewhat poking fun at the previous generation. Music took a turn and I too started "working all the time, seemed to me I could live my life better than I think I can". Haven't heard of Dream Theater, Let's GOoooo!! Great work on the "Digging Deep' excerpt! Music Audio fantastic! Thanks once again!

No record in the history of rock had more pre-sale orders than Presence. It contained no acoustic guitars - all steel pedal - and no keyboards or piano. The music was written entirely by Page, with some input from Bonham (I'm not talking about lyrics). In contrast, the band's next and final album, In Through the Outdoor, was all Jones and Plant (and Page, too gone on heroin, and Bonham, even deeper into his alcoholism and cocaine use, hated it). As Plant said about Presence: it is hard to listen to. "Achilles Last Stand" has been ranked as one of Led Zeppelin's "Almost Great" songs, like "In the Light" from Physical Graffiti. "Achilles" is also, according to Page, his most complicated and difficult guitar solo. Anyhow....if you consider the time period this album was written and produced, it really "doesn't fit" with the times. And I don't mean that it was ahead of its time, like you could say Zeppelin's first six albums (all of their catalogue) were. I mean the album was an isolated affair; it was so scaled down as to be almost unrecognizable. You knew it was Zeppelin, but on the heels of Physical Graffiti, you just scratched your head and said, "Okay...it's good...great...or is it?" When you consider what was "big" in music when Presence his the street, it's not hard to see why Presence was a struggle for fans. There was an awful lot of good music out there: Frampton put out "Frampton Comes Alive," Boston's first album, the new Deep Purple lineup, Blackmore formed Rainbow, the Scorpions and Priest were killing it, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Kansas, Kiss, Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak, Rush 2112 (say that again -- 2112!), and more. So for Zeppelin -- and even Sabbath with Technical Ecstasy -- to have a "down" or "different" album wasn't the end of the world. There was a sense that, in some fan circles, Zeppelin and Sabbath had run their course. Some fans had moved onto newer sounds. Anyhow, I love Presence. It's a great album. It's a little out of time and out of place for both Zeppelin and rock. Yet, it is where Zeppelin was at: a hard spot, a tough run. Their '77 USA Tour would show the world that they were back...until they weren't, and the tour was quickly canceled due to the death of Plant's son Karac.

Below the shrieks the seaman hears
    The Devil's in his hole
NOT Below the streets will steam and hiss.
    Just ask Robert. I did.

Ironically, as amazing and unparalleled as the musicianship is on this track, I find Plant's vocals to be almost annoyingly nasally throughout. There are more than a few LZ songs that, imho, would have been as good, if not much better, without Plant's incessant wailing, this being a great example of which I speak.

That's sad to hear you feel that way, but that's why we all enjoy music in our own way, and appreciate some instruments over others, although to me Plant's singing is just another instrument in the song, way different than most other vocalists, they were about singing, Robert was about being another instrument, which is what makes him the greatest rock vocalist ever

This album made me forget about Led Zeppelin. Awful, tedious filler.

Seriously? Achilles, Nobody's Fault, and Tea for One are fantastic songs, some of their best work
