Watched England since 1986 and this is easily my most memorable game , the excitement , the build up , the old scores to settle. Michael owens solo goal was the most amazing goal I've watched , when he picked it up and just ran with it . The hand of God game another great game , I think we would have won the world Cup if we beat Argentina on that game , I remember John Barnes came on as a sub and just ripped argentina apart 😀. Germany games always second to Argentina. My first FA Cup memories on bbc were watching ossie ardiles and Ricky villa playing for Tottenham 👍🙂

Wasn't Gazza's past game vs Moldova Sep1996. 1of his last if not his last was a friendly against Saudi Arabia just before the 1998 World Cup which as everyone knows he wasn't selected for.
No way this was the greatest World Cup game. West Germany - France 1982 beats it hand down, or knees up if you're Schumacher.
Perhaps the allusion is only for the 1998 World Cup. But if you mean the best match of any World Cup, then before Germany - France '82, I prefer Brazil - France '86.

There was no chance for England to win that World Cup. Even if they managed to beat Argentina, they would have lost to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, or Brazil in the semis
I don't think that I have ever been so tense than in that game, it was suffocating, supercharged atmosphere, for many reasons it was not just a worldcup game.
I have only taken the english as rivals in the past just for political reasons. But if you think about it, it is not the people who are to blame but the damn governments since they are the ones who make the decisions. In the case of England: an old harpy. In our case: a bloody drunk military man.
But we (the argentines) know very well that in football matters our rivals were, are and will be the brazilians. And I thank God for having such a rival because it is these types of opponents that make you want to play better and beat them.
How did England not win this game??....i remember every kick....Sol Campbells "goal" nothing wrong with it...still annoying even now
steve edwards nothing wrong with it except that Shearer elbowed Carlos Roa (the Argentinian keeper) in the face as the cross came over. I’m as big an England fan as anyone but if you take your blinkers off you see that. If you want to blame anyone, blame Shearer.

I watched this live and Sol's goal was perfectly legit, and so was Shearer's jump. He was doing what all players in the box do at set pieces: use their arms for leverage and momentum. Going back to 1986 I think practically every tournament has ended for England based on penalties, cheating opposition, or poor refereeing decisions.

Hopefully Steve. The Germans always get some dodgy decisions to go their way, and a perfectly sound Korean goal was almost disallowed for off-side. Thankfully, VAR saw justice done. Without that VAR check there's nothing to say Germany couldn't have qualified and gone on to win the tournament at the expense of a dogged and determined Korea.

BRAZIL VS ITALY 1982 IS DEFINITELY THE GREATEST GAME IN WORLD CUP HISTORY .. GERMANY FRANCE 82 IS SECOND BEST.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but this game is nowhere near as good as some other World Cup games. My personal favourite is the 2006 semi final between Germany & Italy. Germany hadn't lost in that stadium for over 70 years. Both teams had their chances. It went to extra time where Gilardino hit the post & a minute later Zambrotta rattled one off the crossbar. In the end with penalties looming at that point Italy had never won a shootout & Germany had never lost one. The corner by Del Piero, the neat little pass by the impeccable Pirlo, the curling shot by Grosso. Not to mention the celebration of the goal. Seeing Canavarro jump into Gigi's arms. And a minute later seeing Canavarro with an interception giving the ball to Totti who found Gilardino who then signals Del Piero to go around him who then strokes the ball home with the last kick of the game. That is the best advert for international soccer I have ever seen. Italy goes on to win the World Cup, but for my money that was the game of the tournament & the best I ever saw at a World Cup. Just my 2 cents, but re-watch it it is a classic!

Laughing that they might suggest in this video that the red card was harsh, Beckham should have controlled his temper in that moment, it was stupid. It was nowhere near as harsh as the Rooney one against Portugal as you could see in that moment Rooney was being fouled and pulled all over the place by two Portuguese players and was partly off balance. It doesn't matter how Simeone reacted to Beckhams flick kick, Beckham had the free kick, he just needed to get up and get on with it. England could have won it, going down to 10 was always going to make it a mountain to climb

I think they are valid points especially the disallowed goal, and we played well in this game.
