Any game that doesn't start with a 45-minute presentation calling me sexist, racist, and homophobic for respecting and admiring other peoples cultures is usually pretty good.
Everyone forgets what a peach off a cross/corner that was for the “sol goal” from Anderton and then it the confusion off that goal getting disallowed that Argentina caught England on the hop with a fast break that for my money they would have almost certainly scored from but for a last gasp tackle from Anderton who had run the full diagonal length off the pitch from the corner flag to literally just make that tackle in time …… think it was around the 80th (?) minute if you watch the game again. Because we lost the shootout everyone forgotten this but 1. Think how much more it would have hurt had we lost 3-2 in normal time had Anderton not got back literally seconds after we could/should have won it by the same score line after sol’s goal got ruled out … and 2. how important that tackle would have been had gone on and won the shootout!
Best England team since 66 and frankly the last one to show any real fight when it mattered. A shame they didn’t get a chance to progress further. That being said, if Argentina didn’t advance we would never have gotten Bergkamps wonder goal in the next round.
The keeper would probably have beaten Campbell to it anyway. But yes, Beckham was made a scapegoat. He made a very human mistake, and the ref was very strict. Still immature of him, but it is what it is. Shame, we had a good chance that year, Owen was terrifying every defence he went up against.
Alan Shearer scored one of the most savage penalties in WC history and got whistled on a BS call while fighting to secure victory for 10 man England because Beckham kicked Simeone as the referee was looking at him. Then in the shootout Shearer converts nearly identical penalty. Both teams were high quality and there’s no knowing what would have happened if Beckham hadn’t gotten the red but certainly , if someone deserved to be blamed for the outcome it was him.
Best I’ve seen England play… even better than euro 96… most sophisticated style of play and all over a very Argentina side. Seaman Neville adams campbell Anderton ince beckham le saux Scholes Owen shearer Teenage Owen was shear pace, Scholes being played in correct position, Beckham spraying passes from midfield, ince breaking it up and distributing, shearer being shearer two wings backs with quality going forward and good on the ball. Spurs campbell, the best version before he destroyed himself, adams peak career, seaman. Personally England should have kept that formation for the next 10 years and could have won something blooding Lampard and gerrard into the ince beckham roles…. With a more defensive playing against the best teams. England played 442 to keep becks in the side on the right wing but it stopped them from achieving anything as meant Scholes was on the left or gerrard. Should have played a diamond… could have even had gerrard playing odd roony up top with Scholes and Lampard in behind and a Barry type. Oh well… it is how we play now just with a defensive minded coach who played 3 dms in the midfielder positions. Workmanlike and effective but watch this Argentina and England game as see how England could play
I remember that very well. Hoddle almost blew it early on in the groupstage by benching Beckham and Owen, once those two were added to the starting XI, England was dynamite. Would've beaten Argentina if not for that red card. As a Dutch fan, I would've loved to have seen England face off against us in the quarter finals. I know we got smoked in '96, but during that Euros, Edgar Davids was sent home for picking a fight with the coach and Frank De Boer and Marc Overmars were both out injured. Add to that the fact that Jaap Stam and Phillip Cocu found their way into the team in between '96 and '98, Bergkamp just came off a very succesful season in '98, and Kluivert and Seedorf weren't teenagers anymore. All in all we improved massively in those two years and I think a Netherlands-England match in '98 would've been an amazing high-level game. Shame it never happened
@@JeDikkeMof It would have been a seriously good game... Bergkamp got you there against Argentina but I would say that though he was a good player I never really felt Kluivert was a top top striker... My prediction is Shearer does the business and England go through in a very tight one.
@@JeDikkeMof and yes Hoddle arrogance with Beckham and Owen ultimately bit him in the ass, most of the players from that squad said hoddles man management left a lot to be desired, a shame because he had great footballing ideas and the respect of the players (to begin with)
I have a theory to do practicing penalty just like how volleyball player before they make a serves. There is a pattern before doing that so you can calm your mind by doing the pattern
What gary lineka doing in Qatar if the country is so backwards? Surely now he also has blood of the dead migrant workers on his hands... I hope he did this job for free and paid his own way to Qatar.
What's your greatest World Cup game?
Argentina v France 2018

its simply the greatest podcast and these clips are always so good
Micky had no idea what those 2 were talking about, he never got to shoot a penalty in his life, what a legend😂😂😂😂
That's why he was asking the questions and listening
Watching this after Kane’s just missed it....
Same

anderton is the premier leagues most underrated player
Really interesting to hear them talk about the walk to the spot. Not something you really hear players talk about in much detail
These podcasts 🙌🏽 quality 👌🏽

How does Micah Richard’s not remember this? He’s older than me and I remember it
England will have wished Kane had Shearers bottle
great informal 'interview!
Lineker’s telling the truth, Shearer cost England a place in the next round, yet it was Beckham who got all the abuse.

@@DCC-ho2nk It wasn’t a bs call at all. Shearer elbowed the keeper in the face. So Shearer is just as responsible.
@Winterwood768-yx9kx No they’re not. It’s Shearer who’s to blame. It was a foul, he elbowed the keeper.
@Winterwood768-yx9kx Did Batty, Ince And Beckham steal yours?
Could someone tell me what accent Gary is speaking in the video? 🙏🏾🙏🏾

If it works, England should hire you!
I love Richards but for a man in his job he has hardly any football history knowledge 😂
Gary missed a penalty against Forest in 1991 FA cup final
This didn’t age well kane taking pens 🤣🤣
Should have taken Andy Cole
You can tell Alan is still bitter about that game.
Such a good England side. Should’ve won that match
Ye ye, such a good side, lost to Romania, then to Argentina, both those teams lost in their next round, such a good side 😂
Micah tell us about your experience of taking penalties in a big world cup game ........
Overpayed PC Louth mouth he is
Total foul. Roa took an elbow to the jaw

Kane is a good Rugby name.
It was never a foul, even worse the cheeky buggers almost scored while we were celebrating!
