    Poor Otto. Sad for you, but you always put him first.The bootees came in handy. Well done ! Some beautiful scenery on this hike and it's nice to see you with some company for a change; and the background music is really fitting. Another excellent video of your hike. Cheers. Thank you Elli for another lovely documentary film of your hike. I hadn't got the WHW on my to-do list as I thought I've done some bits of it and anyway it is very busy. Even this time when you did out of the main walking season, there seemed to be a fair number of people around. However, you have persuaded me! The scenery is so lovely, who can resist it!

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you so much, Nick, for the kind words! Yes, there were quite a few people doing it, even in March. After having done it 3 times, I still think it's a great hike - easy to meet other hikers, good infrastructure, good options for side trips and beautiful scenery without it being very hard. But I definitely would only do it in low season (like late winter, early spring or autumn), it's probably way too busy in summer...

    Sehr schöne Serie über den WHW. Macht einfach Spass dir und Otto zuzusehen. Habe länger überlegt ob Rescue Dog ironisch gemeint ist (Rettungshund, also Otto rettet dich wenn du in Not geräts) oder ob du ihn (aus dem Tierheim) gerettes hast. Bezüglich Mäusen ist es meiner Erfahrung nach besser und billiger sie knabbern außerhalb des Zeltes einen Foodbag an als dass sie sich durch das Zelt beißen um an das Futter innerhalb des Zeltes zu kommen. Deshalb lasse ich mein Essen ganz bewusst immer außerhalb. Bin übriges vor 3 Tagen vom WHW & GGW zurück gekommen. Schottland ist schon schön und eine Reise wert. Man muss halt das Wetter mögen.

      Vielen lieben Dank für die netten Worte, das freut mich sehr :) Hahaha, daran hab ich noch gar nicht gedacht - Otto ist in der Tat ein ehemaliger Straßenhund aus Kroatien, daher "gerettet". Hmm, interessanter Aspekt - ich hab bisher tatsächlich noch nie Probleme mit Mäuse gehabt. Dachte immer, gut verpackt in Dyeema Drybags und direkt "neben" Otto im Zelt trauen sie sich vermutlich nicht ran bzw. riechen sie das Essen dann nicht mehr. Aber vielleicht hatte ich auch bisher nur Glück 😅

    My friend and I did the WHW a few years ago. We had a heatwave until Glencoe, when it turned wet. You definitely had better views of Ben Nevis than we did!

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  3 месяца назад

      Definitely hard in a heatwave too, if not harder!! it’s crazy, the area around Glencoe seems to be an area where a lot of WHW hikers have really bad/wet weather. I was very happy that I got to see the section in good weather after having no views and rain twice before 😅

    Eine wunderschöne Tour. Mit dem Auto konnte ich die Schönheit der Gegend garnicht so schnell aufnehmen, da so viel auf den Straßen unterwegs war (wahrscheinlich Ferienzeit im Sommer), ein Grund mit den Wanderschuhen ein bisschen Entschleunigung hineinzubringen. Nach dem Motto: Fünf Finger für vier Pfoten, hoffe Ottos Pfote gehts wieder gut und ihr hatten noch ein paar schöne freie Tage dort. Viele Grüße G

      Aww, thank you so much. Really glad that you've enjoyed the videos :) I think April is a good month to do it. I've hiked in Scotland in April for several years now and the weather was always pleasant: not a lot of rain and plenty of sunny days. This year was apperently unusually wet and cold 😅

    When I did the WHW it was a heatwave and it felt like hiking in a desert. I was struggling with heat and finding water. Would like to do it again in more Scottish conditions haha.

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  3 месяца назад

      Can totally imagine that it's very hard in the heat too, with the terrain being so exposed, almost no shade, etc. Definitely wouldn't want to do it in a heatwave either 🫣

  • @alangauld6079

    I've done all of the WHW in bits and pieces but never in strict sequence and never as a single trip. A few parts I've done half-a-dozen times, others only once(Milngavie!). But it was great to see your take on it, especially as a 3rd time walker. Looking forward to your Affric trail experience, I really enjoyed it (I did it in winter with about a foot of snow at the watershed).

    Thank you Ellie for another great video. Really enjoy following you and Otto from the warmth of the sofa😁 Don’t envy the weather although it adds to the drama of the Scottish landscape. Blue sky and sunshine is always welcome but the mountains need the snow, mist, wind & rain, especially up in Scotland to make you appreciate the calmer times. Sensible you put Otto first. Like most happy dogs they’re more than pleased just to keep going so long as they’re with their owner. Looking forward to your next adventure. Take care.

    Great vlog 👍
    When I was younger, I hiked the West Highland Way in Scotland multiple times and even cycled it twice. I loved the Scottish mountains. But later, when I was in my late twenties, I tried hiking in the Alps for the first time. Now that I'm in my forties, I still go hiking a couple of times each year. I've been thinking about revisiting the West Highland Way, but I keep changing my mind. Whenever I plan a trip to Scotland, I remember its beautiful nature (though it's not as grand as the Alps in my opinion). However, the bad weather and pesky midges make me hesitate. Still, the idea of going back to the West Highland Way remains tempting. 😊

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  3 месяца назад +1

      Thank you so much for sharing and the kind words :) true, it's very different to the Alps obviously, which is probably why I like it so much. It's not too technical yet so different than landscapes in Germany/South of Europe. I think I particularly like the roughness, the fog - just a special kind of beauty imo 😊🥰

    Hi Ellie, thanks for sharing your West Highland Way adventure with us.
    You asked if subscribers might comment on experiences of the route/walk. It's a yes and no answer from me: On 23rd April I took a train from Crianlarich to Glenfinnan in glorious sunshine. There are several sections of the journey which 'track' the WHW. I could see dozens of walkers from the train. Most noticeably between Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy.
    A few years ago I had a gig (I'm a drummer) at the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven and went early so I could have a short walk to Loch Eilde Mor. Decades ago I hiked and scrambled up the Black Mount and all the Glencoe Munros. Including the Aonach Eagach.
    I can't wait to see your Affric to Kintail trip. It's a very special area for me because it's where me and my late wife decided to marry.
