    Very interesting Elli, I live at the start of the SUW and on part of it walking most days to keep fit, I hope i meet you on it next year. I'll be keeping an eye out for you. I walked my Camino in 2019, St Jean Pied de Port to Finisterre, came back and wiped the slate clean and started another round of Munros. Surprised at how much you spend though, of course you have your little friend. I eat the same thing each day when on the trail but spend a lot less than you. Said enough but will leave a nice scallop shell for you on the SUW.

    The TGO challenge is great fun, I did it twice back in the 1980s and there is a great community feeling on the walk. The Scottish borders are a greatly underappreciated area, Galloway in particular is very quiet but full of great hiking terrain. The Southern Upland Way is on my ToDo list along with the St Cuthbert's Way running south to Lindisfarne.
    Finally, the other trail you should consider is the Cape Wrath Trail from Fort William to Cape Wrath in the northwest, you can add it on to the end of the WHW for a 350+mile adventure. I also recommend pre-pending the Kelvin walkway from Fort William to Milngavie - around 12 miles from the city centre out following the River Kelvin and then the Allander Water. I never understood why they didn't just include it in the WHW!

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  10 месяцев назад

      Thank you for sharing your experience :) I'm really looking forward to the TGO Challenge, so excited to meet fellow hikers there :) As for the Southern Upland Way: planning it for this year. The borders really are beautiful, I was so surprised when I hiked there last year on my JoGLE.
      The CWT is definitely on my list too (did a part of it last year on my JoGLE), but I want to take Otto with me when hiking while he's still young and I feel like the CWT would be too much for him with boggy sections and river crossing where I would need to carry him which is hard for me and sometimes not very safe. But definitely on my list if I would hike solo without Otto....

    Thank you Elli, a very informative blog as always 👍🏻 Some very useful ideas & tips 🤔
    Im sure you’ve researched these, but a couple of through hikes worth looking at here in the UK are The Hadrian’s Wall Path, only 85miles/135K (very different than the Coast to coast path) and The Pembrokeshire Coast Path, 186 miles/299K ! I think you could do them with ease. “A stroll in the park” for you and Otto.
    Really looking forward to your next adventures 😃

    Great vid, Elli. Planning on completing LEJOG next year and your videos have been a great help with planning. I REALLY loved the PW, sorry to hear it didn't click for you. Maybe I got lucky with the weather. Look forward to seeing your next adventure. Congrats to you and Otto!

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  11 месяцев назад

      Thank you so much for the kind feedback, I'm glad it provided a bit of help :) I think I underestimated the PW and somehow found it quite challenging. Also I only realised later on that I was eating not nearly enough and was losing quite a bit of weight. So maybe it was more of an energy deficit too, because it was very beautiful but somehow I found it very hard a lot of the time....

    Great stuff, cheers, Elli 👍
    YES!! to the TGO - it's become a kind of under the radar institution (not very well known, classic). Many people walk it every year so know each other. If there's one event that deserves a documentary video, it's this. How did you hear about it ?
    The fact that Offa's Dyke was a favourite in spite of the rain says a lot ...and the fact that the Pennine Way wasn't, even though you had dry weather says more 🤔
    A separate vid for the PF makes perfect sense, since you're now an expert 👍and for the gear review
    The other trails sound fascinating!😁

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you so much :) I actually don't even know anymore how I found out about it, it was a few years ago. I was registered for the TGO in 2020 (before I even had Otto), but then that obviously got cancelled. Re the trails: So true, I didn't even think about it that way! I think I just underestimated the PW, it was very hot and quite challenging. Also it was during a time where I didn't eat enough and lost quite a bit of weight (but didn't realise that at the time), so maybe just not enough energy and probably found it harder than it actually was..... As for Offa's Dyke, I think I was distracted by how beautiful and varied it was and somehow forgot that some parts were also quite tough :)

    I'm interested to trying Heul as an alternative to conventional trail meals, one of my bug bares is the texture, how does this compare, great videos 👍

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  9 месяцев назад +1

      I really like the texture tbh, it's similar to real food for a lot of the meals. The pasta dishes have real pasta, little pieces of tomato, bacon, bolognese etc. depending on the dish. The chili has beans... the curries have a bit less texture, so a bit more the texture of mashed potatoes...

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  9 месяцев назад

      Ja, das mit dem Tragen hilft irgendwie schon, für uns funktioniert das total gut. Wobei mich die Wanderung definitiv auch entspannter gemacht hat, einfach weil wir soooo viel durch Kuhherden gelaufen sind. Irgendwie erscheint es mir so, als wären Kühe auf National Trails oder größeren Trails generell entspannter, weil die mehr an Menschen gewohnt sind, weil immer welche durchlaufen. Das hoffe ich zumindest für den C2C ;)

    Picking dog up is interesting strategy but pissibly very dangerous for you .General advice in uk is to let dog off lead and ket it run. The cows we int catch the dog and take their attention off you. Cows with young are particularly protective..

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, I'm aware of that... The thing is with Otto being a rescue he has had quite a bit of trauma and would very likely just freeze, lie down with the risk of being trampled. Picking him up worked well for me so far and it seems like he disappears for them. But of course I would put him down hoping he would run if cows would come so close that it would get dangerous....

    • @ethelmini
      @ethelmini 14 дней назад

      I think that applies more if the cattle are getting close or aggressive. Picking the dog up could prevent that situation developing.

    Hallo liebe Elli, immer wieder schön deine Videos zu sehen und so inspirierend.
    Du hast ja deine Entscheidungen bezüglich Job angeschnitten und ich bin total neugierig, wie du alles unter einen Hut bekommst, bzw. dich und deine zukünftigen Reisen finanzierst. Ich bin selber ein paar Monate in Europa dieses Jahr wandern gewesen und weiß, was das unterwegs doch auch einfach kostet. Mal abgesehen von Ausrüstung.
    Ich hoffe, die Frage ist nicht zu persönlich - Lebensmodelle anderer Menschen finde ich immer spannend und bereichernd.
    Viele Grüße aus Thailand und morgen einen hoffentlich ruhigen Rutsch für dich und vor allem Otto.

      Liebe Katrin, Entschuldigung für die späte Antwort, ich habe mir über den Jahreswechsel ein paar Tage "frei" genommen :) Dankeschön für das liebe Feedback, das freut mich wirklich ganz arg :) Ich würde gerne mittelfristig von meinen Videos und dem Wandern leben (vielleicht Guides rausbringen, auch ein Blog ist definitiv in Arbeit). Da bin ich noch nicht, aktuell verdiene ich mein Geld vor allem über die Wintermonate mit Kunstworkshops, die ich seit ein paar Jahren gebe (vorher neben meinem Hauptjob, jetzt sozusagen als Haupteinnahmequelle). Dazu lebe ich ziemlich minimalistisch (zuhause, aber auch auf Tour), habe kaum Fixkosten, sodass ich mit wenig auskomme.... Aber ja, etwas mehr finanzielle Sicherheit wär nicht verkehrt ;), daran arbeite ich mit Hochdruck. Liebe Grüße nach Thailand in die Sonne und ein gutes neues Jahr :) LG

    Hi Ellie, can I ask, did you have a problem with ticks? Do you have a strategy for dealing with them?

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  10 месяцев назад

      Yes, I had a few very horrible days in Scotland in April where I apparently pitched in tick hotspots 😂 After that it was fine and didn't have any problems in Wales/England (only on one stretch on the SWCP). I wore long pants, tucked into my socks and always made sure to check myself at night in the tent. And I learned to not pitch the tent directly but to put down a tissue and look for ticks first before setting up the tent 😂 On some really bad days I used some smidge (midge repellent that also claims to work for ticks) on the inner tent. That really helped and prevented at least some of them of getting into the tent :)
