Elli hikes
Добавлен 23 май 2015
Hi, I’m Elli and I love (long-distance)hiking, backpacking and exploring nature.
Thru-hiking the South West Coast Path in England changed so much for me and made me realize that there was something missing in my life: Freedom. I didn’t want to wait for „later“ or continue to tell myself that I would follow my dreams „some day“. All we have is now and life’s too short to do stuff that we’re not happy with.
Which is why I started to follow my real passion: being outside and being creative. A bit scary but something that just feels right.
You’re welcome to join me on my journey to a simpler, more meaningful life and to come along as I explore the world with my rescue dog Otto (my ride or die and absolute best adventure buddy).
Maybe we’ll see you outside :)
Happy Hiking,
Elli and Otto

In September of 2024, Otto and I embarked on another long-distance hike. Something completely different and new for us: For the first time ever, we hiked in Spain and set off to walk 500km on the Via de la Plata, one of the Caminos de Santiago.
Come along for our second week on the camino that saw us hiking across Castile and León from Zamora to Rionegro del Puente. We had some beautiful sunny days and the landscape slowly changed from flattish farmland to rolling hills and wooded areas. But we also had some low points and the camino turned out to be harder than expected...

Thru-Hiking the West Highland Way with my Dog: Milngavie to Rowardennan | Wind, Rain & a Rough Start
Poor Otto with all the noises and Poor you with a lack of sleep, you don't seem to be enjoying this trail like some of your others, do you not use a raincover on your pack when it is raining and does your stuff in your pack get wet without using one.
Another enjoyable video, I always like videos when the presenter can express their feelings about what they are going through. You have also helped me with a decision I've mulled over for some time. I once had a free standing tent, (a Marmot Pulsar 1) then went for the one pole type, (a Lanshan 1) but after watching how your tent offers you more choices of where to pitch, I plan to go back to a free standing tent next year. When I had my free standing tent I too could camp on balconies, in rooms, on patios etc, someting that I can't do with my present tent.
Well done looks challenging but worth it , must be hard being a vegan on such long trips
Fantastic Ellie, looks like you had company too.
Looked like a tough one. I prefer country side to desert; I like the greenery. Well done Ellie, Dad & Otto.
Great to see you and Otto rest and eat, you both deserve it for sure ❣️ great content:)
Interesting trip but a bit on the flat side. The towns look good.
I just realized that wasn't your Durston you were using. Which tent is that and why not the Durston? Just curious... 🙂
Really interesting to see a different Camino, nearly all the videos I've seen have been of the northern route from France. I love Spain and have done some hiking in the south; the Sierra Nevada and Sierra Grazalema plus the southern Pyrenees around Andorra. But the north of Spain, and the Picos de Europa in particular, is on my to-do list. Zamora looks lovely, it is definitely one to visit if I'm in that part of the country. Looking forward to the rest of your trip.
Well done Elli not the best of trails but another ticked off thanks for sharing the video.❤
That is so hard hiking long distances with not enough sleep or food AND having to carry your anxious dog! Poor Otto 😢 I have an anxious dog as well, so I can sympathize. She's quite a bit bigger, and she had surgery earlier this year on her knee, so I had to carry her a lot while she recovered. She still will fake a limp and ask me to carry her sometimes 😂 Do you have an emergency rescue sling for Otto? It might make it easier to carry him when he's anxious. You wear it like a baby carrier in front, rather than having to carry him in your arms and get exhausted. I have one for my dog in case she gets injured, thankfully I haven’t had to use it! But maybe something to look into. I have the Fido Pro, but I don't know if that would fit Otto. I think RuffWear might have one for smaller dogs.
Yet another great vid. Luv your positivity and smile. Enjoy so much your adventures with little Otto. stay safe, Rob (Addickted),😄
Well done elli, another good video, don't know where you get the energy, the trail looks hard on the feet, hopefully your next step will be more peaceful for otto, take care ❤❤
oh Elli... camping amidst sprinklers is a classic 😂 I was thinking it looked like an African plain / savanna too Nice to see some hillier bits and trees. Poor Otto. It takes 48 hours for the cortisol to subside after a traumatic incident. It sounds like he has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I'm a dog rescue volunteer and have seen similar issues. Best buy a dog papoose / sling and walk away from the sound. Walking towards it risks him losing trust in you and/or bolting. Have you tried DIY wraps / Thundershirt to reduce the symptoms.
These episodes on the Camino are very different from your Uk hikes Elli 👍🏻. Quite a variety of open scenery and places to spend the night. It looks like a tougher hike along very rough tracks/Roads and very few shops and bars to replenish your energy levels. I admire you & Ottos perseverance. Thank you once again for sharing.
Hi Elli, Dad and Otto... wow... that was a roller-coaster 🙏.. Glad you got through it and Otto is happy again. What a nuisance those noises were 🙄. Keep going and enjoy time with your Dad Elli 💖👍😘🐾
Hi Elli. A lot of the tracks there look like they'll be quite hard on the feet, tarmac or gravel as opposed to grass or moorland which tend to be more common in the UK. Weather is better though at least most of the time ! 🤣I love the sound of Otto munching on a crisp. I wish I could get that as my ringtone 😆. Stay safe Elli & love to you and Otto xx
Another great episode 👏 So sorry for Otto, I can cry for him 😢 hopefully it will be no more shooting.
It sounds like you add sound effects when Otto eats crisps. It’s the perfect crunch noise!
Beautiful Elli, firstly I apologise for not commenting for a while. I love you sincererity in presenting yourself, and your beautiful doggie, I keep him in my heart, thank you for beautiful footage as always. Kenny, South Africa 🌸❤🌹🙏🤗
Bless you Elli, for taking care of your perfect companion, Otto. He is lucky to have you. It has been really interesting seeing the countryside that you're walking through, but it does look rather bleak and uninspiring, only improvingt towards the end. Nevertheless, you bravely accept the challenges and no doubt end the day feeling quite relieved, and pleased to have coped. Regarding the bird frightening shots, it's a pity that you can't get some ear muffs for Otto. I'm sure that he'd love that. Another great vlog. Cheers ! Sheffield South Yorkshire.
If you ever get the chance, you should check camino primitivo and camino san salvador. You'd be walking on trails much more. Anyway, this one becomes much greener and there are more trails the more go go north. The north of Spain is pretty mountainous .
I really feel for you on this one Elli. I have to say it doesn't look the best of trails. But, I know you will ride above all the difficulties 😊
As always, a very good and interesting video. It's your path and only you decide how you go about it, especially because you help decide for Otto. Don't worry about what others think about it.
As Always a Great Video. I'm actualy not shure if should go to Iceland or to the C2C next year (2025).
Thanks Elli. Really enjoying your JoGLE journey. Otto looks like he really loves the hiking life.
Thank you so much for following along 😊 yes, he really does 🥰
For some reason Chinese chips are always the best 😊
Great video Elli it looks they were some tricky bits during this trek. Otto is such a trooper he must be one fit dog with all the walking and fresh air he gets 😊
Thank you so much for following, I really appreciate it 😊 Hahaha, yes - he's very fit 🥰
So happy and surprise to see both of you . What a completely different adventure . Have a good bonding with your dad . Big hug for Otto ❤
Yes, it really was very different compared to my other hikes 😊 Thank you so much for your kind words and for following along, that means so much!
Hi Elli, new subscriber. Really enjoying your vlogs. I'm planning Te Araroa, NZ for 25/26 season. Got most of my gear but interested how you feel about Kakwa 55 now. tiv SteveO
Thank you so much for following along :) I’m going to make a video on my experience with the Kakwa 55 soon, but just as an answer for you here: I’m very happy with it, it’s the most comfortable pack I’ve had in years and carries even heavier loads comfortably. After well over 1000miles with it, it has almost no wear and tear. I actually like everything about it :)
Thank you. I am binge watching your TGO Challenge right now. Love your energy and enthusiasm! I came down to Kakwa 55 and Mo (Prospector now) like you, but I have big shoulders so I am leaning towards the Kakwa. You are on Day 5 and no complaints about the pack yet, so I like it. Your vlogs make me happy.
Absolutely love how are this video is, we all feel your pain and have personally been there many times with blisters, sciatica and plantar fachiitis.......but we prevail and keep fighting! Thank you so much for being so open and honest in your journey 😘
🥹🥹 thank you so much for the kind words and the encouragement! That means so much and I'm really happy that you've been enjoying the videos 🥰 thank you so much for following along!
Did you know that Wainwright's ashes are scattered near the top of Haystacks? Funnily enough, some of my dad's ashes are scattered on Red Pike overlooking Buttermere, where we went for several holidays when I was a little boy in the 1960s. You had wonderful weather for the walk. Lucky you!
Vamos Otto 🐾
Merci !
une superbe nouvelle ballade ❤ merci
Been on my todo list for a while. Stumble across your videos by accident whilst researching and here i go to start watching from the beginning to binge watch. Do you have a website with any detail....gpx, camp locations etc. 😄
Thank you so much for checking out our adventure, I hope the videos can help you a bit when it comes to planning etc.... I have made a little guide with information on campsites, resupply, route options etc. that you can download here: buymeacoffee.com/ellihikes/e/223632 (it also includes the gpx files for the entire hike)
thankyou ever so muchElli.
That's a good Camino to pick, as the other more well known routes have just become so crowded nowadays. I've done 2 sections of the Camino-Del-Norte, a beautiful coast hike for the first part. The problem is once you start any Camino, the other routes keep calling you back for more. Have fun :)
Brilliant video stunning vues I only just found this trail and it's looks so remote and stunning I live so close to this aswell 😂 40 miles summer trip will be planned thank you I enjoyed both sections to this video :)
Much nicer weather than the UK Ellie!
Did you find it cold in your -3 quilt?
No, my Apex 233 quilt was totally fine even without my winter base layers. I've used the quilt in -3/-4°C already and wasn't cold with an additional thermal layer and my winter sleeping mat :)
@@ellihikes Thanks, deffo going to be getting one! :D
Hallo, neues Zelt ? schones Reise ...k.
Nice one Elli and Otto, bet your father was so happy that you both joined him on this Camino. Over the dogs can understand your feelings, saw it a lot last few weeks on my Camino. I look forward to the following videos , take care all 🌷
" Vegan sausage roll! " oh Elli 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you so much for sharing your experience of hiking in spain with Otto. I thought about doing it with my dog Ola (who would match with Otto lookwise), but have been shying away from it because of the public transport situation combined with not having a driver's license. In fact, I thought it was not possible at all to take a dog on any train. Since you were talking about the crate problem: I customized an IKEA bag myog style by sewing mesh-windows in the sides to take my old dog on ICE trains for free. A really lightweight solution and he really liked it.
Great to see you again Elli. Spain looks a bit flat in places. Can't beat Scotland for undulating landscapes. If you're ever in the Glasgow area, give me a shout.
It's a "weird" landscape for sure. It's quite high up in altitude, 850m, sometimes even 1100m - like a giant plateau but on top it's very flat. But there were more and more hills when we hiked into Galicia :) Definitely will do that, thank you for following along :)
Thanks for sharing your experience with us all ❤it
Did you get tired of your Durston tent?
No, not at all :) But I wanted a free-standing tent this time because I wanted to have the option of putting up the tent without pegs on a terrace, on a patio etc. Which is why I took my old BA Copper Spur :)
@@ellihikes That makes sense, I was thinking about doing the VDLP myself next April and was thinking about taking my Durstan because of the long distances between villages/towns but a free standing tent would work better.
As I was with my dad, I was hoping that I would be able to stay outside the albergues so that we could spend the evenings together. But not all albergues have a garden, some only a terrace/patio. Took my free-standing tent to be flexible and even pitch on concrete etc. I sometimes even pitched in the hallway of the albergue with just the inner tent, so I was very happy with my choice :)
As a fellow vegan I really felt for you in this video. The last time I visited Spain, it was about twenty years ago, I was vegetarian and I remember that they did not understand the concept over there so I lived on cheese sandwiches and cheese salads! I've always wanted to walk the Camino but the food issue does worry me. I feel so lucky in to live in Britain where we have so many vegan options.
That's so true, the UK is incredible when it comes to vegan options. In bigger cities and supermarkets, it's definitely possible to find great vegan options, but tbh for me personally the food situation wasn't great and annoyed me a bit after a while. It worked and I didn't starve so it was ok, but the food wasn't a highlight on this hike and options (even like side dishes like veggies) were very very limited 😉😅
@@ellihikes Well done on sticking with it! ☺I'm looking forward to the next video
Vegan options might be more plentiful on the more popular Camino Frances. But it looks like you found something yummybto eat finally 😋
