I'm one of the people you're talking about -- wasn't old enough to appreciate Frank when he was alive, totally loving his music now after I got a chance to hear ZPZ. Dweezil's band is kickass, btw =) so thx very much Dweezil for bringing me this music =)
Yup it's not FZ, but I saw ZPZ do this in Boston on the 2006 tour with Nappy and Stevie Vai and Bozzio and it was fucking great. Who would have ever thought you'd hear this music again after Frank died? Just enjoy it.....
Wow! I'm a Zappa nut. Always have been. Have FZs whole catalog in Vinyl, Cassette, and CD. Everything I have is committed to memory ok? But thats just a simple by product of years of pleasuring myself with Frank's sound performances. And I gotta tell ya, A lot of things disturbed me about Dwezil's momentum into Frank's music legacy. Yes he is superbly talented, but...he isn't Frank. And Dwezil's only lack seems to be "creativity, and imagination" as Frank wielded it. That said...This was great!
Thanks for the gift that will last forever- The Music!!!! Three hundred years from now FZ will be played live at concert halls all over the civilized world. People will be moved to tears. Like I am now listening to this.
while DZ shows plenty of pyrotechnics, for my money even with his flair he just doesn't capture FZ's feel, despite the dna link - for a more faithful interpretation of the master & his groove check out Tyler Bartram, one of the nerdiest looking individuals to ever pick up a guitar, but a multi-talented Zappa beast - like Andy Devine, he's aligned with a blown mind
murvon: God gave us Frank, so we could enjoy some of the more elevated musical pleasures. God gave us Sarah Palin so we could get the corrupt Alaska Republican Party cleaned up. Sarah was from the Matsu Valley, which means she would be pretty libertarian. The land of the midnight sun -- they have long days of sunshine -- you can grow what you want. I doubt that Sarah would be a Tipper Gore, seeking to censor your favorite artist. Just my contrarian opinion, of course. Learn to enjoy both.
When i seen them in Edinburgh, Dweezil's solo was so amazing, but Scheila Gonzalez's outro alto sax solo blew him away! I advise everyone to go see them now!
@UncleIrv 'Chomsky is about as libertarian as Stalin' - Ridiculous rhetoric. Chomsky stands up for free speech just as Zappa did - for everyone. Look around, one of few intellectuals brave enough to stand up for holocaust deniers who are JAILED for saying things. He does not believe what they say, but that they should have the power to say it. I appreciate your concern over hate spewing people, but there is a new breed of conservative now and it's far uglier than youtube comments.
No matter how many times I watch this performance, this guitar solo still stands of one of Dweezil's greatest imo. Such an epic build up from beginning to end... So beautiful it brings tears to my eyes!!! This solo is 🔥🔥🔥🔥!
@LuneyTune72 as a religious freak and proud I just want to say that I am sure God loves Frank for giving his creatures so much beauty and laughter and is consulting with him on many important heavenly decisions. With that said, could someone tell me why Dweezil's guitar is plugged in at both ends?
I don't think Frank would of wanted this to happen....his son playing his music?? I can't see how anyone could stand watching this. I believe Frank would of wanted Dweezil to write his own songs and work work work like he did. This is wrong.
I AM NOT LIEING: Frank zappa never played parts of this solo. They were never played on a guitar! Dweezil learned them, he told in an interview. i took dweezil a year. he learned techniques STEVE VAI couldnt do!
Actually, if you search around on RUclips, the solo Dweezil plays on "Son of Orange County," is almost identical to that which Frank played on "Roxy and Elsewhere". And Dweezil does it really well.
The solo is off. Frank had soul in a freakish type of way that no guitarist can emulate. When I watch this rendition of Inca Roads, it just makes me want to put on the original song.
Dweezil's guitar playing is no where close to his fathers...he should of wrote his own original music but he probably couldn't, he's not a genius like Frank. Frank Zappa forever!!!
stupid haters, it is son of Frank Zappa and not Frank himself :) he just enjoys his soloing and it is actually very cool.... compare him with Vai or someone else from his group...
I've seen Zappa Plays Zappa twice. Once in Saint Louis and once at the Beacon Theater in NYC. Amazing both times but in NYC they played the music and a movie screen dropped down in the back and Frank sang along! It was brilliant and inspiring. I am a young dude that has benefited musically from Dweezil doing what he does. Thanks for telling that person to screw off in the nicest way possible.
Dweezil has got his own style, he also estimates his dads playing quite well. I think it is wonderful his dad was awesome enough that he can make a living for his family playing it. It is better to be dweezil playing zappa then dweezil trying to be as great as his father in his own right, style and failing. He insures he makes a living and keeps alive great music at the same time.
This solo is sublime. It is "off" if you want an exact copy of Frank's. Thankfully, there always will be a difference between musicians, on how they interpret and add to the original composition. Dweezil is not copying Frank. He's playing the piece of work. Glenn Gould played Bach, and he was great. He didn't play it exactly how Bach played it. Dweezil put together this band, the best band of the 21st Century.
@UncleIrv maybe crazy isn't the right word maybe just stupid. but besides since zappa was libertarian he would support gay marriage and abortion while palin definetely doesn't. as for the AIDS thing i doubt that's true. i would also say though that by today's standard of conservatives zappa wouldn't be conservative. he also regean's policies would lead America towards a facist theocracy.
@EddieGoregor Not so sure Eddie? Dweezil starts the solo with a hugs tip of the hat to Dad, he plays some of Frank's style passages, sounds, hammer ons etc but then launches subtly into entirely his own creation, almost unique lines and phrasing and very unique sound. I suspect what is happening is Dweezil wants to both do his own thing and tribute his Dad. To do this he needs a great band that are well rehearsed. To do that he needs to fill some houses, and to do that he needs some good program
@Ebby12ny Keep in mind that you'll probably not see any special guests (like Napoleon). But Dweezil's core band is EXCELLENT! I saw them last fall in Niagara Falls. 'Going to see them again in August. Great show! you'll love it. p.s. I think it's great what Dweezil is doing to keep it alive. Anyone who thinks that his intentions are less than genuine is full of shit. I hung around after the show neer the stage. He came out and chatted with everyone! Great guy!
That all the old players of frank are playing with ZPZ just shows that Dweezil is accepted by them. if he and the band are good enough for them, who am I to doubt them. I saw ZPZ live and I enjoyed it immenesly. My nephew too. it just motivated to dig more into his guitar playing. in my younger years I also saw frank, but I did not understand the music and the romanticism of the texts. like brokken hearts are for assholes, i have been in you or why does it heart when i pee etc..
And I think people sense this. They/I love the idea of what Dwezil has done and continues to do. But there are moments he relies on Frank's legacy to carry him thru like a "magic spell" over the audience is expected, with too much presumptuous. That reliance Frank's past charm isn't needed. It smells pre farbicated, and phony to me. But, he is his son. So its sacred. To him! Not as much to us.Use your talent and take us further, stop remorphing the past. That solo makes my point, create beyond.
Seriously? A guy honouring his father by keeping some great music alive and bringing it to new audiences is doing something wrong? Something worthy of bullshit from some random internet twat? The first person to tell you he isnt as talented as Frank will be Dweezil. How do I know this? I have heard him say it.
Agreed... good descriptive... obviously Franks R&B roots is what really came out in his solos. I find that a lot of guitariists who found flash (ie: EVH) before the earlier stuff like the Delta and Memphis blues players are lacking that bit of depth. I'm not knocking Dweezil or any guitarist, he's come into his own and I'm glad he's running with it.
Well said - the son is now the father to the man. Let the kid keep his Dad's music alive and be grateful rather than bitch that Frank isn't here. I saw ZPZ do this in Boston and it was DY-NO-MITE. NMB and Bozzio and Dweezil and Stevie Vai? People are actually complaining about this? ZPZ brought the crowd to their feet. I'm thrilled to be able to have this.....
I've been a fan of Frank for 40 years ... sure, Dweezil is not Frank ... but I've seen ZPZ many times, and to be fair Dweezil is merely trying to keeps Franks music alive and bring it to an audience who did not get the chance to see Frank play ... what's the harm in that? Dweezil is doing a great job ... and I look forward to seeing ZPZ again soon ... lighten up ...
Great rendition of Inca Roads. And to the one person who disliked it, "It's Zappa not Bieber." And to luney, Zappa discovered God, something Palin already knew. And I've been a fan since 71 and got to see him about 20 or so times. And I've seen ZPZ 5 times now. Can't wait until #6. Thanks Dweezil Great Job.
@UncleIrv Chomsky prefers small government as well, referred to himself as a conservative a few times - also calls himself a libertarian :). The problem is now you have no idea what conservatives *used* to be. I don't think Sarah believes in anything but money, just like most of the democrats too. She just tries less to hide it.
@Dudestar321 I was going to go to that show but I'm going to the August 2 show at Turning Stone (Verona, NY). It's a double bill ZPZ w/ Return to Forever. I think ZPZ is the opener and not vice-versa. Anyway, have fun. I saw ZPZ last year @ the Rapids Theatre in Niagara Falls. Hung out by the stage after the show ended and Dweezil came out and chatted. It was cool.
The solos are nice, but I think the real star here is Napoleon. Although he sings it down an octave, he nails every crazy interval, retains a pleasing voice with lots of breath support, and still comes across with all the confidence of a great showman. I can see why Frank hired him on sight, way back when.
Is this show from 2006? I don't feel like sifting through a bunch of old comments to find out if someone mentioned it or not. I'm almost positive that's George Duke...and correct me if I'm wrong but he only played with ZPZ in 06 (sorry if I made a stupid remark somewhere, I'm new to ZPZ, but definitely not new to Zappa's music)
This is just such a monster effort, worthy of the '88 tour in quality. D and the ZPZ band are prtty much the snot, seriously this band can beat the shit outta yo mamma. Shiela is cool and takes getting used to. It's interesting to see where D puts her into the vocal line up. His playing has gotten soooo good, steeze chops. Great for all this got posted. Music is the best.
Sorry. This totally sucks. Everyone is phoning it in. Way too 'respectful.' FZ's band would be causing ceiling tiles to fall off the roof and the crowd would be lunging at the stage. Instead, here, they are all sitting politely, sipping latte. Either play it with the attitude it was played or play your own compositions, Dweezil.
Holy shit, that's a very low blow man. Can't believe anyone would say shit like that. I'm new to Zappa Plays Zappa though I haven't heard Frank Zappa play yet, though His son is doing a very great job at doing what he does, I'm enjoying this music with great appreciation towards it.
This shit is just so fucking awesome! Frank may be gone, but I don't think any composer/musical genius and all round great guy has had someone so brilliant jump straight into his boots and nail it so perfectly. Relax Frank, all is well with the world. BTW, this is the best tune on the DVD.
@drvbluesman1 damn straight. I love how neither Zappa will sit in a box shape. They just have the whole instrument over them and so they never get repetative. It's incredibly hard to keep new ideas flowing over a vamp like this but Dweezil has inherited more than a little of his father's creativity
@sweetchildonline 5:57 to 6:20 frank could do it but never would have executed that so cleanly. i think dweezil has taken a lot of his dads playing and done well with it. ithink dweezil plays things frank couldnt but the creativity is def franks forte. this is just amazing though aaaaamazing
Plain & simple: Dweezil is a musical genius!!!! Like father, like son. I saw ZPZ in Phoenix last summer....They were so amazing that I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest & my head was going to explode. Musical magic!!!!
God Dweezil you never cease to amaze me I think this solo just made my braingasm all over the screen. UGASDGHASDfalskdfjaslgdf holy shit fucking zappa!!!! 4:24 just takes it to another level my god I mean my ZAPPA this shit's insane!!!
Just love the song, and the amazing buildup-solo from Dweezil! At the start it seemed very mechanical and repetive, but afterwards he suddenly broke through with melodies and phrasings that were so unique. Brilliant guy, much like his father.
though, I am disappointed he didn't learn the solo note for note... but then again, I don't even think Frank ever played that exact solo ever again. But it DOES MISS the envelope filter on the solo more than anything
it's a great version and solo! I got the double-DVD and can highly recommend it - specially in terms of sound-quality - but also because it is just a wondeful band that plays some of the best wonderful music that exists! :-)
@geo868 Hahaha... You being the ultimate arbiter of not only what good music is, but also what other people like? I actually yawned through the reading of your comment, but I guess it does appeal to a certain kind of person...
Yeah ,give Dweez some credit, it is not like his Dad was writing music that was easy to cover. He took on a monumental task of great skill ,to an informed audience. Good job boy
rocky66 ''that flute player'' is just Napoleon Murphy, THE Napoleon Murphy, The voice of many FZ albums, he plays good flute, just like it must be played on this tune, and that's it.
I think he really wants to play like his father did but he doesn't have the same technic even if he is really good ! anyway I love this cover ! inca roads is a very difficult song
Dweezil's solo builds slowly and then soars like an eagle. He has matured so much over the years. Sprinkles of Frank, but lots of his own voicing as well. His dad would be proud.
I don't get all the hate. Who else can play Inca Roads even close to that level? I think Dweezil nailed it personally, only Frank Himself could have topped that IMHO.
Is your Dad an icon of the 20th Century? Can you play guitar? and if you can ... as well as DZ ... I would bet my morgage the answers are No, No and No ... so relax, enjoy!
From what I've seen, Dweezil is an incredibly talented guitarist has an almost identical "feel" to Frank's playing. I think Frank would be very proud of him.
@Alex11710 Annoying. Hehe seriously though, ZPZ is cool and all, but she gets on my nerves for some reason... her name's Scheila Gonzalez, bee-tee-dubs.
I'm one of the people you're talking about -- wasn't old enough to appreciate Frank when he was alive, totally loving his music now after I got a chance to hear ZPZ. Dweezil's band is kickass, btw =) so thx very much Dweezil for bringing me this music =)

This was ZPZ best lineup and performances. They need Mike Keneally today!

@naxtea Not feeling the long ass solo? On a Zappa song? Does that mean you don't feel the drug humor in a Cheech & Chong movie?
while DZ shows plenty of pyrotechnics, for my money even with his flair he just doesn't capture FZ's feel, despite the dna link - for a more faithful interpretation of the master & his groove check out Tyler Bartram, one of the nerdiest looking individuals to ever pick up a guitar, but a multi-talented Zappa beast - like Andy Devine, he's aligned with a blown mind

When i seen them in Edinburgh, Dweezil's solo was so amazing, but Scheila Gonzalez's outro alto sax solo blew him away! I advise everyone to go see them now!
NMB is probably Zappa's most annoying vocalist. Not that there's much competition from others in that department. He can't really sing well.
@UncleIrv 'Chomsky is about as libertarian as Stalin' - Ridiculous rhetoric. Chomsky stands up for free speech just as Zappa did - for everyone. God took Frank because he was sick of listening to all the annoying religious freaks and wanted Zappa to help rule the Heavens from his Sofa throne.
You'll be cast to hell for that. There's no way this clown is anywhere close to his father. Zappa is rolling in his grave now because of this.
stupid haters, it is son of Frank Zappa and not Frank himself :) he just enjoys his soloing and it is actually very cool.... compare him with Vai or someone else from his group...

I don't understand the negativity against dweez, keeping his fathers legacy alive with such beauty and passion. You haters wish for a kid like that.
@Alex11710
Annoying. Hehe seriously though, ZPZ is cool and all, but she gets on my nerves for some reason...
her name's Scheila Gonzalez, bee-tee-dubs.
@murvon You are right why all the good ones? Take someone like Joe Piskipo maybe? I guess He only takes the ones we'll miss. I'll miss my dad.
is it just me that thinks zappa would've been unhappy to hear all these god references and stuff? he was completely against religion....
If you can't watch 6:00-7:00 and think "wow this guy is a genius guitar imrpoviser" then I don't think your opinion is very valid.
Dweezil is absolutely amazing in his own way. Just try learning a few of those songs and playing great solos, it's not easy!
jason bonham must do somethin like deewzil's does, maybe bonzo could be proud with he, like frank zappa does with dweezil
@betzalel153 That's a camera on the top neck, to film the fretboard.
I've seen Dweez 3 times (ZPZ). He's the real deal. He's true about what he's doing. Go, see for yourself.
Fuck - what a gorgeous solo and wonderfully tight playing from all. Just terrific. Gives me chills.....
thank you for rebirth of that music in live, like original one, except Frank, that subversive Zappa
@murvon Gee, I happen to be a fan of both Zappa and Palin. I guess I don't fit into your world view.
I love the way Dweezil plays in a very similar way to Franks, does he plays solos Frank did before?
I saw them live at warner theater and it was amazing. Best concert ive ever seen. Frank was a genius.
replace George Duke with Napoleon Murphy Brock in my last comment.
Haha I confuse the two a lot.
I have a theory that people that love FZ:s music are generally smarter than people that don't ;)
sheme on you dweezil this solo sownd lik carlos santana.
lets mike kanely play that staf
Dweezil channeling Frank.....I've got a lump in my throat.
@betzalel153 One end is a camera I think. It's how they get shots like the one at 2:40.
marvellous interpretation! could it please go on longer; I had no idea he was this good
I dont see many standing ovations from just a solo. so fortunate to see these guys live.
I hitchhiked 60 miles to buy Freak Out...this is orgasmic
i saw Frank for about 2 or 3 times... Dweezl comes so near... i'm surprised
fine!!!
@MrTheAbominations - I thought she was alright. What does "bee-tee-dubs" mean?
that solo is just beautiful....Frank would be SO proud! he sounds just like him!
@robertomc05 no. "or did? or did?, or did someone.."
great solo by dweezil! starts on like frank but then eventually goes dweezil!
The most awesome.... parts 1 & 2.... Dweezil Zappa is better than his dad.
someone has the tabs of this solo?
It's so awesome i wanna try it out!
This is the most incredible cover i have ever seen thanks dweezil! :-)
Dweezil really has a lot of soul ... this is a marvel
long live Frank
Dad would most definitely be proud. Ive seen them once....incredible.
Frank is still alive, guys. He just changed his name to Dweezil ;)
Amazing how much like his dad Dweezil sounds , Breathtaking stuff
The 'SGCam is my favorite part; Thanks for Sharing Gail Z G_or_g
The one person who dislikes this = WANK...p.s. 7:45 = BEAST!!
OMG hell yes. live show is incredible!!!! Not to be missed.
He's not "That flute player". THAT'S NAPOLEON MURPHY BROCK!
This solo is making me fly into space ! This is so magic !
