You said exactly what I was thinking. It's Zappa, but it's equally Duke. Pretty amazing to hear it like this. Do you know if any of Duke's Zappa covers/interpretations were ever properly released? It feels weird calling this set a "cover" because to me Duke is equally paramount to some of my favorite Zappa albums as Frank. They're synonymous to me.
Met Napolean abt 8 years back after a Project Object an Friends show in St. Louis, couldnt have been nicer. Ray White, and Ike Willis were there as well. The latter who went into the bathroom stall next to my date's right after the show, prob by accident. I was kind of mad untill I figured out it was him..free pass he got that night, lol. Hope they are all doing well these days. Incredible night of music with 3 alumni of Zappa U!!!!
That is undoubtably the best Uncle Remus version I've never heard in my life. The slow tempo, the voice arrangements upline the song's beautiful melody. Absolutely perfect ! Thx mr Duke and Farewell. Hope you and Frank are playing together wherever you are.
Frank Zappa and George Duke wrote Uncle Remus. George did a complete studio version (not part of a medley) of Uncle Remus on his album, "The Aura Will Prevail".
Being a Zappa ultra fan AND a George ultra fan, this video brought some sunshine in my apartment.. RIP Frank, RIP George. You motherfuckers are dearly missed. Cheers from a 39 year old french dummy.
Uncle Remus. Such a beautiful song.. If it had different lyrics, it would've been a charting hit that we'd still be hearing on the TV, radio, commercials, Muzak systems.. Thank God it wasn't! It's our little secret.
George was one of the bests ever to play the keyboards. And his vocals were amazing. Clearly, he applied those same standards to his own band. What a great performance. I miss those musicians. There are great musicians today, but these get my blood rolling.
So much respect due here..!! Fantastic musicianship. Complex phrasing dynamically nailed. So Frank Zappa !! What a legacy !!

Just like always... George TEARS THIS UP!!!! And the band.... Smokin'.... and the music they pull off... and.... and.... and.... Thank you giant universe for all that Duke and Zappa gave us! RIP both you beautiful men!
Drummer has his groove on and sounds amazing and some really nice intricate hi-hat work going on at times but his playing sounds silky smooth. I love what he plays in the solo. How he gets that busy without sounding like he is overplaying is seriously impressive. That Tama kit sounds great too.
Devil's Advocate here.... Zappa makes just about anyone sound like crap. This guy wasn't that bad at all. Tried to take it somewhere else, but didn't work out. Besides, George seemed to have some faith in him. That's gotta mean something.
Can’t think of enough superlatives to do this justice. “Uncle Remus” is my favorite Zappa tune (co-written by George Duke) from my favorite Zappa album, and this rendition knocks it out of the park. Every member of this group is just superb.
Wonderful medley! This is like George's tribute to Frank, and a very spot-on, soulful one at that. George and vocalist Shannon Pearson knock Uncle Remus right out of the park - this has become my favorite performance of this brilliant song!
this video put a HUGE smile on my face! thank you so much for sharing!! Frank’s music is the greatest joy in my life (my daughter excluded) and hearing and seeing George, whose warmth, humanity and humour, made that era of The Mothers so very special. RIP Frank, RIP George xxx
Well said in many of these comments. The sheer joy of playing this music is evident. The contribution of so many Top Top musicians through Frank's bands has created a legacy that is long lasting. Big love to all Zappa fans. ❤
It's awesome to see George recreating this music. He got pulled into that gig kicking and screaming and became a fan like the rest of us almost instantly. And his supporting musicians are incredible. Great stuff!
What a killer band George put together here, they all make that inca roads jam look so easy and George is just loving it! Then the Uncle Remus which was just so perfect in that spot!! Sad that a lot of the audience prob does not know how lucky they are to be witnessing a special medley indeed!
yes!! thank you so much for posting this!! incredible performance by one & all!! yowza!! the amount of work & discipline & intelligence & skill, on an individual level, along with the team effort it takes to pull all that together, man... absolutely mindblowing!! it actually makes me proud to be to be a human. & all that is to say, bravo team!! rest in peace, maestro duke & frank.....
'And before they get up we'll be gone (knockin the jockeys off of the lawn)'. Sublime work by George and the band......They just don't make them like that anymore !!
Great... Cant stop listening to that.. still trying to catch a clue.. what an amazing thing to behold. Duke and Johnson augmented R.I.P. You think Frank was right there to greet them I do.. and ill be crying now...... :( broken hearts are for assholes though.. :(::::::::::::::::::::::::
When progressive rock & fusion were at the peak in the 1970s Duke was my hero on Piano, nothing changed to this day, they dont build musicians of George's caliber anymore .
Brought chills! Of all the amazing bands Frank had, George was in the best one (with Napoleon etc). FZ - best composer, arranger, performer of all time. In Top 3 guitarists of all time! (IMO)
Not to say anything about Cosmic Debris, or Inca roads, both of which I love...but my god, Uncle Remus...what a beautiful melody, what a lovely chord progression behind it. This might as well have been written by Beatles or Chicago...Frank was something, so adept at both complex suites (Inca Roads, King Kong, Dupree's paradise, Black Page, Father O'Blivion, etc) and more straight ahead songs (Uncle Remus, Watermelon in Easter hay, Black napkins, Torture never stops)..What a genius.
A great show, and GD personified the greatest band in the World playing these pieces. Frank wanted George and thank "whatever" God for that .Only more moving than it's totality is that guitar solo. How beautifully interpreted.
Wow, this is the best Zappa performance I've ever heard. The band sounds FUCKING amazing. And George Duke's voice was so amazing. I remember him saying he didn't want to sing but Frank told him "just sing this note" and then he add another and other... and then he started singing.
O shit! G. Thank you thank you thank you. You are in full honor and regalia for this song. Grrreat band!! Just a little bit? You kidding. You were channeling the Mother's with the Duke Man. I absolutely love your playing. Soul man.
Such a masterful performance. George managed to make this music his own without losing an ounce of Frank's soul. Missing me some George and Frank.....
Wow just wow, Frank is smiling and I'm speechless for lack of words.Hey! Thanks for the post.

ME TOO! Miss You George, And Frank, RIHP! GOD Has A FULL BLOWN Concert Going On!
GOD i miss George and Frank
frank and george were a musical match made in heaven.
God, I miss 'em too!
Me too.
Me three
And guitarist Jeff Lee Johnson
the Roxy Mothers era was one of Zappas best band line ups ever.Duke Fowler Underwood Preston Napoleon Murphy Brock Chester Thompson etc
I love chester's drumming.
I would agree with that. The material and performances from that era were seldom surpassed, even though there were other great line ups.
Hard to dispute, and having seen that lineup live (also with Jean-Luc Ponty) I whole-heartedly agree. That's Ruth!
The.
Best.

George Duke you are sorely missed!!! What a fabulous musician!!!
Frank Zappa and George Duke......two extremely talented artists....you guys are truly missed
Don't forget about Napoleon Murphy Brock ! Zappa had it together with these dudes and the other mothers. His best stuff and his best lineup indeed.

Thought I'd give it a quick look. Stayed until the end. Such great musicians. Did Frank proud.
Rip to both. 😪
The Other Brothers of the Mothers... This is a great band & George Duke is a true disciple of the master!!
Being a Zappa ultra fan AND a George ultra fan, this video brought some sunshine in my apartment.. RIP Frank, RIP George. You motherfuckers are dearly missed. Cheers from a 39 year old french dummy.
Greetings from sunny Greece. Cheers from a sixty year-old dummy
Listening to this I’ve just realised what a beautiful song Uncle Remus is. I always knew it but this is such a great version.
Uncle Remus. Such a beautiful song.. If it had different lyrics, it would've been a charting hit that we'd still be hearing on the TV, radio, commercials, Muzak systems.. Thank God it wasn't! It's our little secret.
J Winslow
J Winslow
i used to work for Muzak. :P
Indeed! George's gospel-y chords are so beautiful in that song.
J Winslow, you got that fucking right, man!! Cheers from France!
George was one of the bests ever to play the keyboards. And his vocals were amazing. Clearly, he applied those same standards to his own band. What a great performance. I miss those musicians. There are great musicians today, but these get my blood rolling.
Pure love, that's what I get from this. Zappa did a lot to open George Duke up, and used his talents to make him blossom and grow.
This band sounds so relaxed and yet so tight - i can't even believe it!
Olaf Mertens that’s because they are! Believe it! The highest level of modern musicians believe it or not.
Wow! What a band this was! Jeff Lee Johnson on guitar........?? ..what a performance! again..wow!
George always makes me smile. He seemed to really enjoy life.
absolutely! just hard to believe that Frank had to push him to sing. So glad you gave in George. your voice is one of life’s treasures RIP George xxx
This is amazing.. Duke was always amazing...The guy on the strat... beyond words... Love this,I am very glad I stumbled here.
All of these musicians could have been slotted right into any Zappa ensemble of the '70s/'80s. I honestly couldn't think of a greater compliment
you are absolutely right
So much respect due here..!! Fantastic musicianship. Complex phrasing dynamically nailed. So Frank Zappa !! What a legacy !!
Just like always... George TEARS THIS UP!!!! And the band.... Smokin'.... and the music they pull off... and.... and.... and.... Thank you giant universe for all that Duke and Zappa gave us! RIP both you beautiful men!
Jazz Haze : breaks my heart how fleeting is life... including my own.
She lost it at 7:23 she couldn't hold it. This is fuckin kick ass.
Brings a tear to my eye😅 rip George and Frank a true dynamic duo
I was almost in tears during the whole medley. Amazing perfomance and band.
5:53 when the 7/4 part starts, it is mind blowing with what kind of ease George is playing that
He was classically trained but he could play any style. Awesome talent.
Thank you George and band for this wonderful piece, May you and Frank always be remembered when mentioning the greats of music.
That is how its fekkin' done ! Oh George Duke. How we miss you.
Drummer has his groove on and sounds amazing and some really nice intricate hi-hat work going on at times but his playing sounds silky smooth. I love what he plays in the solo. How he gets that busy without sounding like he is overplaying is seriously impressive. That Tama kit sounds great too.
That's Thundercat's brother, yo! He's a beast.
It takes a LOT to impress me & I am THOROUGHLY IMPRESSED!!
Frank woulda been so PROUD of this OUTSTANDING Performance & Tribute!! BRAVO!!!
Fantastic group, medley and the woman's voice, so lovely. Uncle Renus chokes me up every time. 🎵
GEORGE DUKE the world is a little sadder without you, loved you with Billy, John, and Alphonso, your music will live forever
Holy shit! What did I just watch? Oh my gawd! Some of Frank's best done by some of the world's best! Thank you whoever sent me to this link.
Its great to see George and other former Zappa players, keeping Franks music alive......
God Bless Frank and all the mothers!! Absolutely the best musicians ever!!!
RIP George and Jef Lee. You are greatly missed...
GREAT version of Inca!!
This is absolute gold - Duke and his group play Zappa
Inca Roads - very faithfull to original album version. Nice one, George.
LOL , yeah , except for the God awful guitar solo!
@@undergroundjohnny oh god yes that solo shows how great Zappa was as a guitarist, this dude can't improvise properly to this song
Devil's Advocate here....

Wow. Two favorite songs of all time, done by the great Zappa alumnus George Duke. Made my day. Sing along!
Wonderful medley! This is like George's tribute to Frank, and a very spot-on, soulful one at that. George and vocalist Shannon Pearson knock Uncle Remus right out of the park - this has become my favorite performance of this brilliant song!

En tant que fan de Zappa, je ne peux qu'apprécier les interprétations réussies, et celle ci en est une. Merci Georges Duke pour votre fidélité !!

Remarkable, fantastic stuff, George your a hero, miles, Frank, a master in your own right. I thank you for your sharing your genius!

An amazing tribute to the greatness of Frank Zappa. RIP George.
So glad this was recorded.

This video gives me chills and fond memories.
Awesome! And there's that synthesizer Frank tempted George with going to good use!
What is that beneath you Frank said what an impact he had on George and in turn all of us.
Great Googly Moogly down in the dew.
I could never find a Black woman who liked Zappa. Shannon seems right at home with this music. Excellent performance.

the amount of work & discipline & intelligence & skill, on an individual level, along with the team effort it takes to pull all that together, man... absolutely mindblowing!! it actually makes me proud to be to be a human.

Goodness, this is incredible. These guys can play. The love and respect Frank's alums show him is a beautiful thing to witness. Music is the best.
Best Zappa related thing I have seen in a long time.
absolutely true
Fantastic! I had the luck to see Zappa live in Cologne, Germany.
The drummer, Ronald Bruner, is amazing! His hi-hat work and his cymbols/bell work, especially.
Dear whoever, this was great. Beautiful performances all round. much love!
shines brilliantly, the composition plus the performance!! absolutely timeless!
3 compositions here: 2 FZ's and 1 JD''s
I mean not JD, but GD for George Duke :)

OK, Uncle Remus co-written :)
Music by Duke, lyrics by Zappa.

I Love George Duke for so many reasons...I just wish he did't bow out so early
One of the very few versions that actually makes me remind of the Zappa shows!
Anazing performances thank you bravo💯💯💯👍👍❤❤❤❤👏👏👏
RIP George and Frank.. I love how the fact that George wrote Uncle Remus isn't widely known among Zappa fans. :)
True fans know. We also know about Dawilli Gonga.
@@Scoharr
And Stucco Holmes...Zappa's alias on G Duke recordings.
this gig definitely put a smile on my face..... music is the best...

Oh my God - brilliant and what outstanding musicianship!
That's Thundercat's brother on the drums! Plays with Kamasi Washington nowadays. He's a total 110% monster on the drums.
Excellent performance. Thanks for posting.
U can feel the respect from the young players to the zappa works
A great show, and GD personified the greatest band in the World playing these pieces. Frank wanted George and thank "whatever" God for that .Only more moving than it's totality is that guitar solo. How beautifully interpreted.
RIP Zappa and Duke. The best, really really, ..
Wow, this is the best Zappa performance I've ever heard. The band sounds FUCKING amazing.
And George Duke's voice was so amazing. I remember him saying he didn't want to sing but Frank told him "just sing this note" and then he add another and other... and then he started singing.
Little by little . . . .
Definitely one of the best Zappa players ever and included in this is one of the best versions of Inca Roads you will ever hear. RIP beautiful man.
Amen!!!
Amazing slice. All top versions. His live versions of Uncle Reemus always brought the emotion for me.
Surprise, surprise, George's band is awesome.
O shit! G. Thank you thank you thank you. You are in full honor and regalia for this song. Grrreat band!!
Just a little bit? You kidding. You were channeling the Mother's with the Duke Man. I absolutely love your playing.

Wow. So cool. Never thought I would see Jef Lee Johnson playing Zappa :)
Greatest vocalists on RUclips right here- and the rest of the band!!! Holy! Holy! Holy Vocals!!!
What a wonderful tribute to both men.
