Shooting the Buffalo Bore 340 Grain .44 Magnum +p+ out of a 4 and 5/8" Ruger BlackHawk Revolver.
Loads of Recoil! Good velocity average for the shorter than factory testing barrel.
Buffalo Bore tests their loads in a variety of barrel lengths.

Wow! Buffalo Bore really extracts every last bit of velocity out of that loading. Pretty impressive that you get those numbers out of such a short barrel.
Yeah they loaded it pretty hot
@@AlaskanBallistics
I have the same Super Blackhawk but with the 5.5 barrel. I wonder how much difference the extra barrel length will make? Any guess?
75 fps ish?
@@AlaskanBallistics
I was gonna guess 30 to 50 fps so I'll take 75 :)
Depends on the powder type. Faster burning or slower burning.
I bought the Ruger after reading that warning from Buffalo Bore
Yes me too but single action isn't good for bear defense. Glad i got rid of it and did a double action even if it's only a 2.5"
You HAVE TO put the Houge Rubber grips on over the small, slippery stock wood grips on the Redhawk. It’s a different gun but I like the looks of the wood. But with the stock grips it feels like I’m about to drop the gun.
The .44 Magnum has been the best cartridge ever invented!!
One of for sure Godspeed and good hunting
I just got thy same gun this man is shooting. Haven’t even shot it yet
How do you like it?
That load is what makes it the equal of penetration to the 460 S&W and 500 S&W X-frame revolvers. Or so stated the late Jeff Quin God Rest His Soul.
It wishes it was the equal of the 460 S&W. That’s like saying 357 magnum is as powerful as 44 magnum… You can say it but it’s not so. 454,460 and 500 are in a whole Nother realm from 44 magnum, just facts. those cartridges have so much more powder room to load them heavy and hard that I just don’t see the comparison.
Sounds like i need to test this
The ballistics or muzzle energy of the 340 grain +P+ .44 mag ammo definitely gets up to and maybe beyond .50 AE. But I don't think it's competition for 460, or 500 Mag. It might be in the neighborhood of some lighter factory loaded 454 Casull in the same way some hot .357 ammo gets into lighter loaded .44 magnum territory.
@@331Grabber energy does equate to penetration. The momentum of the 340 grain hardcast gas-check flat meplat bullet can penetrate very very deep due that momentum.
Holy shit. It’s like taking the energy of 4 9mm rounds in each shot, or equivalent of 3 powerful .40 cal rounds each shot. Crazy!!
Yep!
Yep! But still half the energy of a .30-06.
yeah yeah and 1/10th the energy of a .50 BMG lol still this is a handgun so its more impresive@@AlaskanBallistics
Love them . Super Redhawk double action 7.5 barrel.
That's a good one!
Those first four rounds were really consistent. That thing kicks like a mule!
Scott
Yes sir they do. Thanks for watching!
See and feel the recoil when the FPE is greater than the FPS.
I have the same gun and ammo. I just received my Ruger Super Blackhawk in 454 casull as well. Hey from Montana.
Awesome... can't wait to get a casull. Thanks for watching
I have shot a lot of these from my Ruger super black hawk. I didn’t like the smooth finish the grip come with ( it’s pretty but I prefer some natural texture to help me hold on better). I lightly sanded the grips but it is otherwise stock as it comes from the factory. I bought these cartridges for the power but I was amazed at the accuracy. At 25 yards they just cut clover leaf holes in the bullseye. The plow handle grips just allow the gun to roll in my hand and in very manageable. I can’t use a loose grip on the gun as it will roll too far and allow the hammer spur to tag my hand. So just grip the gun like you are shaking hands with someone and that allows enough friction to keep the gun from rolling too far in your hand. My Ruger has a 7 1/2” barrel.
I have the same Ruger NM Super Blackhawk, which will be a great packing firearm. I don't have Buffalo Bore, but do have the Underwood 340-gr +P+ which wasn't bad when I used it in my Ruger Redhawk 5.5", stout but manageable.
Thank you again for these videos
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
I have this same revolver. Carried a Taurus Tracker for awhile untill I found the Ruger on sale. Only carried Hornady 300 grain rounds in the Tracker but now I can carry real rounds. Shooting the 340 grain +P+ out of a 4 5/8th inch barrell is eye opening to say the least. Did some research and found out Pachmyer does not make rubber grips for the Ruger SBH but Hogue does. The Hogue mono grip is well...grippy without being tacky feeling. Plus it is finger contoured so controlling the revolver recoil is much easier. The felt recoil is lessended but....you will still know you touched off an artillery round. Shot placement is still very critical with this round; to protect yourself legally from a Grizzly attack you use either bear spray or let the bear get real close(
I don't think any of us want to see that happened face to face. I actually carry a 10 mm now Glock model 40. I traded this gun when I couldn't find it extremely fast chest rig holster. Watch my bear charging drill video for what happens. It's still a great gun.
Pachmayr does make 2 versions for the SBH. Ive owned both but prefer the finger grooves. Currently on my 7.5" barrel stainless SBH.
I'd tell fish & game, GFY....let them get 10ft from a Charging monster, not me!! great story...
That's crazy powerful
+Prepare2Survive it's pretty stout
Damn brother that’s some serious ammo
I have model 29 smith and Wesson 6 in barrel I thought I was tough shooting critical defense ammo but damn those buffalo bore rounds are stupid hot !!
Props man
They actually list which guns you can use them in on the box. Smith is NOT one of them, don't use so you don't blow your gun up at worst and stretch the frame at best.
Thanks for watching brother! I appreciate it!!!
southsidehtx1 Be careful. The Buffalo Bore .44 mag +P+ has a disclaimer on the box stating that this ammo cannot be used in S & W hand guns.
I have a Ruger Vaquero. I purchased this ammo and man, it’s a wrist buster. Regular .44 ammo is much more pleasure able to fire.
Very true
I have measured virtually identical velocities as you did out of my pair of 5.5" Bisley Vaqueros. Interestingly and somewhat predictably, as I have a matched pair of them with sequential serial numbers which invite me to nitpick miniscule variations between them, the one with ever-so slightly tighter tolerances between the front of the cylinder and the forcing cone entrance to the barrel, averages around 20 to 50 fps faster than the "looser" of the pair.
No other notable increases in escaping gases or noise are readily observable...but consistently just that tiny bit faster with most loads, the BB +p+ included.
Cool... That's good info!!! Thanks for watching. Interesting that tiny amount of cylinder gap makes a difference
No worries, thanks for posting the content! I was surprised by the degree of difference as well...but it makes perfect sense!
Great shooting ammo n Ruger toklet n super red hawk
It's great for any social work also.
Dunno if you are gonna see this, but maybe you will. Just wanted to share seeing that recoil reminds me of my grandfathers 330gr .44 Magnum load he cooked up for his chopped down 4 5/8" Old Model Super Blackhawk. The recoil is very similar to this, but I think this has his load beat! I would share the powder load to give you an idea how hot he loaded it, but I don't want to be responsible for others hurting themselves.
Understand. Thanks for sharing. Glad it reminded you of your grandfather
Been wanting to try these in my Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter 7 1/2 “ barrel it is a beast of a Revolver and would like to see how it handles these bad boys
Cool man let me know the results
A 340 gr hardcast going 1350+/- is smokin'. That is what a normal 240 gr handload is running for me out of the same exact gun and i thought they were on the hotter side!
It's definitely a hand bruiser
Thanks for watching!!!

Thank you
My buddy says these will go through a moose the long way if you are too close. I just got a Redhawk last week just for these rounds.
I believe him as my .45 super went through 12 water jugs
@@AlaskanBallistics That will put a hurt for sure.
"This Ammunition is NOT SAFE to shoot in every revolver", ie, Don't shoot it in a S&W... ;)
MrHeepspo wasn't planning it lol... thanks fur the safety warning!!!
MrHeepspo. What about the Taurus Tracker?
Dont shoot the taurus period lol.
"This new load is designed ONLY for certain firearms. They are as follows; Ruger Red Hawk, Ruger Super Red Hawk (the Ruger Alaskan is a short barrel Super Redhawk), Ruger Super Blackhawk or Vaquero, Freedom Arms Model 83, *Taurus Raging Bull* Colt Anaconda, Magnum Research BFR and Dan Wesson Revolvers."
i thought the anaconda was a 44 special only?
I have shot 6 out of my 3.75" Ruger SBH Bisley and it is real hand ful.
I bet! Later on the channel i shot them out of the ruger Alaskan... whew
Better than a grizzly bear chewing on you
thanks for the video
+Thomas Osteen no problem... Will duo with longer barrel soon
I carry a bisley Blackhawk .41 mag in black bear country. I know it's a different situation all together, and I know it's not very common. But I'd love to see a test of someone's 265gr lfn load if it's possible. Buffalo bore, Underwood, and grizzly all have a similar loading.
Lucas Barnes if i find a .41mag to borrow, I'll gladly test it.
I heard good things about .41 mag. They are however hard to come by in my neck of the woods
.41 Magnum is awesome
I guess I must’ve missed this one
Long time ago
1,357.98 foot pounds of energy!!! I just wanted to reiterate that in this comment section! Whoa!!! 😂😂
It'll hurt something
9mm is 300-400
That recoil though. Damn.
Check out the same ammo in the ruger Alaskan...
@@AlaskanBallistics I just saw that. It *looks* worse in the long barrel one to me. I just picked up a 44 mag this week gonna shoot it for the first time tomorrow. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous. Super excited though!😁

That's a great choice!
These 340s & Hornadys 225gn leverevolutions out of a ruger 77 44 would be interesting to know the fps
True. You got one for me to borrow? Godspeed Brother
Good info & Good video ..I also was wondering about 340 grain from Underwood i have heard some folks say it is the same ammo but i have not seen or tried any myself yet....In my area i have to special order these loads...
Yeah I'll see if one of my local gunshops has it, we can't special order to Alaska unfortunately. There are import/export laws and ammunition can only be shipped in that way...
Found some... Will be a while before i can go shoot it
Jolly Peanut Video up! Check it out
when shooting heavy recoiling loads in the rugers with wood grips you gotta take the wood off and but some rubber grips the wood is just to slick and looses grips and then comes out of your hand easily. for cowboy action loads wood grips are fine but for bear loads and above gotta have wood grips, pachmeyer makes some good one. rubber grips are like under 30 bucks for them.
+tank2449 you are absolutely right sir
I'm,probably going to sell this gun
sell it because of the recoil or why? if it because the recoil get some hogue rubber grips for it recoil down by like 25% and it doesnt feel like it gunna come out of your hands. i shot my dad 44 mag for several years before i bought mine same gun as yours and so was his he had the pachmeye grips on it and first shot i fired out of my gun with the wood grips it felt like the gun was covered in grease the wood just doesn't offer good grip for serious loads. put the hogue grips on and i can shoot my max hand loaded 300 grainers all day long. the hogue grips dont look very cool but its my outdoor packing gun so it doesnt need to look cool!
tank2449 i love the recoil and shooting the gun...
I'm selling because it's a really show option in bear country, and i just got a 10mm and a want to fund something else...
I have no problems with these loads in my ruger with wood grips!
Would this same ammo SAFELY FUNCTION IN A HENRY BIG BOY LEVER ACTION? THANKS!
thats impressive
+Gary Poborsky yeah It's tough stuff... Bear medicine for sure
WARNING! it has been documented that these heavy loads in short bbl pistols ( Alaskan) can "inertia pull" the remaining bullets from the case
It happened to my brother -in-law.
proof www.fieldandstream.com/photos/gallery/survival/animal-attacks/2009/08/charging-grizzly-killed-alaska
That's why you see that monster roll crimp on those BB 340 grn bullets... I've never experienced any bullet creep using them. Shoot 5 rounds, check the OAL of the 6th... no change. I would always check the mouth of fired heavy BB empty brass before using for reloading, because they really lock that case mouth down in their manufacturing process (which helps with combustion of heavy, slow propellants as well). Underwood uses a much lighter taper crimp on their heavy 340 +P+ stuff (nickle)... but never noticed any creep on their cartridges either. Their 340s +P+ powder has a unique odor when fired... it leaves the firing line smelling pleasant and 'springtimey', and brings happy smiles to all the guys' faces - at least those who hang around through all the blast concussions.
That is good information, good to know. Thank you for sharing your experience
Is there a chance to chronograph a .357 maximum firearm and I know it's a rare cartridge. Many thanks for sharing these informative videos.
I don't have access to one. Just got 6" gp100 .357 magnum. Will do some videos on it
Wow that is smoking for that heavy of a bullet!
They hurt too
I'd get a ruger for this ammo. The xtreme penetrator rounds might be the best alternative to carry in a smith and Wesson for bear.
That's why I'm using a ruger. Buffalo Bore's website says to use rugers...
And the size difference between a Super Redhawk and the X frame is substantial in hand!
I've shot that round in SRH Alaskan and on a 7.5 RH. I haven't shot it out of my SBH not sure how the factory grips will feel with the muzzle flip
Let me know how it goes!
I love these rounds. My ruger super Blackhawk eats em right up. 5.5 inch barrel. I put a hogue grip on mine. Big hands get nicked with the wood grips on stout loads. I like your unfluted cylinder.
So do small hands. I traded this gun away unfortunately.
I have the Super Blackhawk in 5.5 also. I got the stainless. I noticed the 5.5 Super Blackhawks are the only ones with the fluted cylinder. Never could figure out why both the longer and shorter versions have the unfluted cylinder. Though I like the fluted.
Awesome, imagine that in a Ruger Kodiak 5028??
It would be fun for sure
@@AlaskanBallistics But would you use different grips than stock?
@@mikeydo9567 definitely... I meant to change them out in this one before I traded it
@@mikeydo9567 I plan on changing to hogue rubber grips in my kodiak backpacker
Wow, I don't know if I am going to be able to handle the +P+. I'll stick to the buffalo bore 340 grain regular.
Daniel Correa it's sharp... but worth it in bear country
Daniel Correa , You get a bear in your face or a moose charging you your gonna be so adrenaline pumped youll never notice the recoil. And in BEAR country you NEED all the thump you can get! Trust me bud. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT !!
@@AlaskanBallistics It's also more of a push than a really fast snap so it isn't as bad (and is worse).
True
I love these rounds. Sorry it isn’t pleasant for you to shoot. I’m a recoil junkie and love the explosion of energy in my hands. Feels like you smacked a tree with a metal bat but the satisfaction makes it a pleasant pain haha
They are fun
you maybe have even got superior performance if you used a longer barrel gun. the advertised muzzle velocity and energy are from a 5.5 inch barrel. So if you used a 6 or 7 inches revolver you could get a muzzle energy that surpasses even the .50 Action Express, with speeds close to 1500 fps and a little heavier bullet, but with superior penetration, even to the FMJ round.
Christian Hjelmstrom of course... Just seeing what it would get... I have many videos with different barrel lengths on it
I still haven't worked up the cojones to buy a box of those.
ed ha they hurt... But worth it in bear country... Check out my video on these verses the unde eood extreme penetrators
Thanks for watching
Makes it kind of hard to see the point in a heavier caliber handgun.
Jim Bob true, would like a .454 casull but why?
Alaskan Ballistics I love the 454 and the 500. But if i need to be able to use the damn gun under stress I figure a heavy loaded 44 is about the max any man can actually use well enough to get out alive if it goes past a first shot. Lol
Jim Bob i have a bear charging drill video coming out Saturday morning
Jim Bob but i agree
Alaskan Ballistics excellent, I'll subscribe. out of curiosity, what's your opinion on the lower caliber hard cast bb ammo? 255gr 45acp at 960 or the 357 180gr hard cast?
If you run up on a bear that needs to be shot, I think ammunition that’s “not fun to shoot” might be the last thing on your mind. But yeah, the first 2 times I shot some of this stuff in that same model Ruger, I bled.
I went to a double action Smith, and use the 255gr keith hardcast from Buffalo Bore.
...that round really needs the 7 1/2" barrel...
That would be fun to see, I did a video out of the nine inch barrel
...just checked the BB website...they say 1478 for the 7 1/2 inch barrel...sounds about right...
For the purpose a short barrel allows it to clear a high mounted holster (worn fishing) much better and quicker. The Bisley framed version has an even shorter barrel which is in my opinion even better for carry purposes (I have both).
Single actions in general are dumb... get a 4" redhawk
Im conflicted on whether to get the ruger alaskan in 44 mag or 454. Will be used on my trip to alaska backpacking in august. And honestly i have a ton of 44 mag ammo on hand but think 454 might be the better choise. I think this round is swaying me baco to 44 mag
Hey something with at least a 4 " barrel. It's not that much heavier and those short barrels tend to have well placed bullets tumble out of a medium.
@@AlaskanBallistics ok. Also was looking at glock 20 in 10mm. Obviously no where mear the power but plenty of verifiable reports from alaska seem very favorable
10mm is more than adequate if v you can place the shot correctly
I have a Blackhawk hunter, this looks painfull to shoot...🤨
It was... i actually enjoyed sitting this out of the ruger Alaskan better
How much was a box of that Chuck?
39.99 now they're 42.99 i think
Do you feel these could possibly hurt a 7.5 super blackhawk?
Turn less you shoot a couple 1000 through it
Nope won't hurt it a bit
I need some of that ammo
Great video! Any advice on how to shoot these rounds more accurately? I have a Ruger Alaskan 44 mag and shoot it mostly low (flinching). I mostly shoot 9mm. thanks
Syn Lim practice with .44 special, then some cheaper 44mag... Then the full thing
Focusing on pulling the trigger and letting the gun kick a bit, then practice the recovery. You won’t win against this recoil so let it win right after but being the gun back down
Practice by putting one round in the cylinder at a time. That helps me recognize and reduce flinching.
Yea...stop flinching.
With a chunk of hard cast lead that big how the hell do you add more powder to achieve +P+ pressure, the standard load for that projectile I would think would be compressed.
I'd agree... this is factory loading so I don't really know what they do but it is for ruger's and Freedom arms only according to Buffalo bores website
Buffalo Bore must have a special formulation for larger projectiles. When I load 44 mag the max projectiles I’ve ever used are 300 grains and the case is usually pretty close to maxed for that bullet weight.
Your video was very informative, keep up the good work.
@@timgreen6072 I think I'm going to go to the heavy 305 grain for my .44. I traded this one away but then got a 2.5" ruger redhawk
@@AlaskanBallistics I currently have a Redhawk with a 7.5" barrel, recently I managed to purchase a New model Super Blackhawk Bisley with a 4.62" barrel in 454 Casull, my first handgun in that caliber. I was actually surprised that the recoil wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.
I imagine these are running 50k+ psi, I wouldn't use them for target practice.
Chuck, do you have any trouble extracting those hot casings out of your SBH? A few years ago, I had one of the old type Ruger Vaquero in .44 Mag 4 5/8" barrel, basically the same gun as yours minus adjustable sights. Anyway, I had bought a box of the Buffalo Bore 'Ruger Only' loads, 310gr. I believe, but after firing the first six of those rounds, I had to pull the cylinder out of the revolver and use a punch and ball pein hammer to knock the damn casings out they swelled so much. I didn't fire any more as I was afraid my gun was gonna blow up in my hands. Just curious what your experience has been with the hot BB .44 Mag loads. Thank ya, sir! 👍
+Anthony Ridge if it gets cold they are really hard to get out yes
Alaskan Ballistics I didnt even take outside temperatures into consideration, you're totally right though as I remember that particular day I fired them was at the end of a day during late deer season here and it was pretty miserably cold out, it was around 5 degrees F that day as a high with strong winds. I was SO happy to get back to the warmth of being inside that day. I realize that might not seem that bad to an Alaskan, haha, but that's nasty cold down here in Kansas.
Anthony Ridge anchorage isn't that bad usually..
Nice vid man! I would like to see the +p+ 340gr from Underwood, from the same Blackhawk. Very similar load, I wonder if the velocity is any different in a real world test. And I would also love to see both loads shot form a Redhawk 7.5" barrel (cause I own one). Subbed!
Stelio Effrena unfortunately, i don't own a 7.5" but if i find one to borrow I'll do the video!
Stelio Effrena it's also hard to find ammunition in Alaska... just the nature of not being able to order it online...
I know with Alaska shipping is a b****!
it's not even that, it's the fact that you have to buy it in a local store, because it has to go through an import-export exporter to get here you can't just order it online and have it shipped to your house.
+CORY A getting there... Ammo is expensive... But going on a shopping spree payday hopefully
Rugerrrrrr
The best
Are you feeling powder coming out of the barrel cylinder gap.
What kinds of pressure sign can you see on the brass?
I don't. Brass is hard to get out. I no longer own this weapon...
Brass was fine for reloading according to the friend i sent it to
LOL I reloaded for a buddy right after the 460 came out we kept a short piece of 3/8 dowel around developing loads. And we learned that it got worse as the gun warmed up and it was Texas summer time. He had a couple chambers that were more prone to the sticky extraction than the others.
Did you have to pull the cylinder out to get the stuck brass out?
@@loboel264mag7 no just tap it really hard
Anyone know the case overall lenth?
Ooh wish I did
How is the normal 44 mag loads in this? I'm considering moving back to Alaska soon and have been researching this handgun.
Normal 44 mag loads are okay. But I'd stay away from this as an Alaskan gun. The single action is just too hard to draw and fire quickly. Plus it's impossible to find a chest rig that is one handed operation so that you can draw while fishing...
Check out my bear charging drill video, you'll see what I mean.
@@AlaskanBallistics Yep. I have a few Super Blackhawks and have gone through a few Super Redhawks in 454. For defense the SRH is so much better as is the take-down/thorough cleaning. I would carry an SP101 before the Blackhawk because I would rather have 357 on target than 44 not.
That's why I carry 10mm or .45 super generally

Those look nice!
Beartooth Bullets is a great source folks.
1000 fps or so with this hardcast bullet will still give deep penetration and is much more pleasant to shoot. You don’t need 1300-1400 fps with these type bullets. Back off these hot, unpleasant to shoot loads and let the caliber and flat nose do the work.
Fair enough. I use the 255gr loads now anyway
the downside is you only get one shot at that grizz with that recoil lift. i may stick with a regular load. does the difference mean that much i wonder. i mean is 1000 ft lb energy not good enough?
It's actually not about the ft lbs of energy but more about penetration. That's why ap many people are going to 10mm. Sure it's not as powerful but it's got enough power to penetrate with a much lighter recoil impulse. And 15 shots...
But to prove your point correct, as it is, watch my bear charging drill video.
This what the 44mag loves the hotter the better . IT will put it in the same hole at 100 yds
That's good shooting? Henry?
Those look like they kick babe!!!
Just a little bit beautiful
What gloves are you using while shooting?
In this video I was just using my sleeves which have the palm and thumb cut out
Does it really matter if you’re going 1324 or a hand load at lets say 1224 if you make the shot you make the shot 🤷🏾♂️ the bear would be just as dead and you won’t flinch as much when you fire the round.
Nope doesn't matter too much
In my experience once you get past 1100 the penetration isn't that much different. At that point in a handgun the higher velocity only gives you more distance. I've done test for this with a 45 long colt 340gr. 480 Ruger 425 and the 475 Linebaugh with a 425gr. Got the same results with each caliber
Just curious, did the empty cases stick in the cylinders or did they eject as normal pressure loads do?
They stick a little in this gun. Did okay in my buddy's 9.5" redhawk
@@AlaskanBallistics - just wondered - I know BB loads some hot ammo and since +P+ falls outside SAAMI spect I just wondered how hard they felt was safe to push it. I’ve tried duplicating some of their loads with various degrees of success. Once I got Quickload, that at least gave me a means to guesstimate chamber pressure/velocities for various bullet/powder combos. Got a lot of respect for BB’s load-craft. If you reload and enjoy hot-rodding Cartridges, QL is worth the money. Also you can find accuracy nodes associated with barrel harmonics. All very helpful & insightful stuff.
There's a channel that has copied their .357 mag load. Don't know if he's done their 44 mag load.
Steep country outdoors I think.
That is an ape shit round, no doubt! Still probably the MINIMUM you'd want to face a charging cape buffalo with.
