Absolutely beautiful...They did an old Ruger 44 flat top for me in 1977 then I sent it off to Armaloy. Loved that gun, took a few deer with it. But...someone else liked it more than I did and made off with it and other stuff from my home. They do fine work there at Magna Port.
I love the story and what that firearm meant to you! That would have been a fantastic opportunity to have a gunsmith of Ken's experience to help guide you. Enjoy! Thanks for sharing!
Wow!... This was a REALLY GOOD VIDEO!... I wish I could do something like that with one of my Dad's Revolvers or Bolt Action Hunting Rifles.... Maybe some day I will.....
I was not aware of your channel before today but this is a very interesting video. I knew of Larry Kelly but was did not know until now that his son Ken is now running Mag Na Port. I like how Ken makes his points clear and succinctly.
Ken is also one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. He routinely goes out of his way to help people. I’m honored to be able to call him a friend! And yes, he sure knows his guns!
Beautiful work. I have a "Silver Hornpipe" 10.5 inch myself, and have thought of having some custom work done on it. We'll see. But thanks for the video.
I sent them a 14 inch 44 mag Contender barrel in the early 80's and they rechambered it for the 430 JDJ. It was sure a handful. I always enjoyed the JDJ series of cartridges. They use the die sinker form of EDM. I have used wire for years in my job. Think I would have jeweled the whole hammer surface. It helps carry a film of oil for lubrication. Also never seen a mill used to crown a barrel before. Guess if it is indicated in it would work.
Comparing this with videos of the S&W Performance Center is quite a shock. S&W PC practices seem fairly crude in comparison with the excellent work done by Mag-na-port. Back in the 1990s I had a S&W 586 with 6" barrel, that was Mag-na-ported and with an action job. Excellent work. I remember first reading about Mag-na-port back in the 1970s and it was a treat to fire a gun improved by their craftsmanship.
Ken has won pistolsmith of the year in the national guild so it’s not surprising how good the builds are that he does. It’s an honor to be able to sit and watch someone like that work! I learn a lot every time I swing in.
I’ve had my 44 magnum and my 454 casull mag na ported by mag na port international and I’m very satisfied with their work and I have a ruger super red hawk 44 magnum that I’m seriously thinking about sending it to mag na port international and turning into the stalker the same type of work Gabe is having done to his 44 magnum and I will be subscribing thank you 🙏 kindly
that's some great gunsmithing. I also have a Super blackhawk, which I gave the Brushed finish ( like Freedom Arms Premier, which I also own). But I must say this also looks amazing. I do have a glassed blaster at home, so I can do it myself. What is the tool the jeweling was done with?
@@FullQuiverOutdoors If it's the small circular steel brush tool, I think I even have a few of those in a drawer in the shop. I wanted to do that to a hammer years ago but never actually did it.
@@Johnsormani, this one was almost like a sponge consistency on the end. You polish the parts to a mirror finish and then basically you’re scratching the swirls into the metal.
Great video and story! Please keep them coming. I’m considering getting a 44 mag rifle for deer hunting for my boys and I. It seems that you have had quite a bit of success with that caliber.
It’s a great little cartridge and perfect for kids. If you live in an area that allows straight walled cartridges, you may want to consider a .350 legend as well. It’s a flatter shooting cartridge and does an excellent job on deer sized game.
I have considered the 350, but we shoot non-toxic only and it might be a year or two before there is that type of offering. Thank you for the suggestion.
No, I shortened it to get rid of the screw hole for the front sight. Only took off a little barrel length and now have a clean barrel. On some of my other revolvers, the front sight hole is just left plugged and the barrel is recrowned at the same length. With the long barrel, I had plenty to work with and still maintain the longer look from the original gun
Close. Ken Kelly owns Mag-na-port International. He’s been a master gunsmith for decades and has won the pistolsmith of the year award. Very accomplished guy!
I’m not sure why they would deem it unsafe? Lots of S Blackhawks are drilled for scope mounts. I’d ask them to explain. Unless the gunsmith did something unconventional and messed it up, it should be fine.
@@FullQuiverOutdoors Its an older new model that I bought second hand. The holes look fine and no doubt they have seen some rounds. Ruger says it's their policy that drilling and tapping any SBH renders the top strap weak and unsafe to shoot. If you send in one that's been drilled they wont work on it.
Ken Kelly is a down to earth good man. He doesn’t do action jobs any more just installs Wolf springs. But my most treasured 44 magnum was a 5.5 inch barrel Redhawk he ported and did an action job and numbered the cylinder. I sold it to raise money to run for office. I won the Republican primary three times but could never beat the Democrat incumbent. 😢
Who the heck does that? You have no idea what you’re talking about. We eat about 5-6 deer a year as a family. I don’t know anyone who kills animals just for a “trophy”. That’s ridiculous. A trophy is defined as “memorial of a victory”. When I shoot a doe, I keep the meat and when my family has venison chili during the cold Michigan winter, yes, we remember the hunt when I took that deer. So yes, I am a trophy hunter but in a completely different way than you think.
Man that is an absolute beautiful piece. His name etched into the gun is just awesome. What a great gunsmith.
Thanks! Ken is a great gunsmith and an even better guy. You won’t meet a nicer person. And he has won the National pistolsmith of the year award.

Great company worked there running the edm machines for years. I remember personally porting that one for ya!
Well ya did a great job! Thanks
Sweet looking fireare. Nice job, guys
Mannn we are in the same situation with our 44 and dad. God bless brother!!!

Great video! I own a SBH 10” 44 Mag and this makes me want to package it up and send it off to Ken!

That was years ago, you’d have to call them to see what it is nowadays. Not sure.

Planning to buy a Super Blackhawk. Would having it Magna Ported help reduce barrel jump?
Yes it would. Porting is designed to keep muzzle jump to a minimum and also slightly reduce recoil.
Great story and great gun! Thank you for sharing this with us
Cant say i blame you for jumping at the chance.

That explains the EDM. We have ported a few guns at work with one.

I want that big nice guy to build me a TAURAS 8'3/8" barrel i mean i want him to custom make 1 for me

Con semejante calibron como no va a matar a ese pobre cervatillo. Es suficiente para abatir a un león. Y los cinco grandes también.
A .44mag isn't overly powerful. Yes it has taken the Big Five of Africa but it definitely wouldn't be recommended. It's perfect for deer.
Seems only lack of whale hanging on the wall
Hunting revolver from fallout new vegas lol
It’s a shame to kill an animal just for the trophy
