I bought this one over the Smith & Wesson .500 for four reasons: 1. It holds 6 rounds 2. The grip feel is perfect for smaller hands. 3. The option to shoot 45 long colt 4. It's a tad smaller and easier to carry in a hip holster Nice review!
@RealEstateChris56, Im guessing you wear suspenders, because that tank would pull my pants right off of me. It would look like I was naked with an oversized ankle holster on. 🤣🤣🤣
Ruger tests their revolvers with 150% pressure proof loads. In the case of 454 Casull that is about 97,000 PSI. S&W tests their revolvers with 110% pressure proof loads. A Super Redhawk was given 300 proof loads to see what would happen. The revolver had no damage.
It’s a power house. But my first revolver was a Super Black Hawk in 44 magnum. I was 21 and that gun was a ton of fun!! It would kick to about 10 o’clock when it fired. But it wasn’t a punishing pistol. And it shot well at 100 yards !
I have had one for years and carried it in bear country in a chest rig. A man walking his dogs several years ago near Wasilla, AK dropped a charging Griz with a Super RedHawk in 454 Casull with a single shot. Saved his bacon for sure!

Nice and all but I'll keep carrying my 10mm with a 16 round capacity in case I'm nervous or whatever is charging has friends. The friend's scenario could be possible, the nervousness would be definite.
Love mine. I load my own, and most people typically shoot one, maybe two rounds, and set it back down. I have had a couple brave souls finish a cylinder... 🤣 The concussion is so sharp that I don't shoot this at indoor ranges anymore, because you are definitely "that" guy that everyone cusses when it goes off.

Great Presentation! Thank you for uploading it. I have been waiting for a newer video about the Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan 454 casull for some time now. I have had, many years of shooting experience with this powerful snub nose revolver. I have found how Durable, Reliable, and Accurate it truely is. It is Accurate enough to put 5 rounds of Hornady 300gr. XTP, shooting "Double Action" into a 2.5" X-Ring from 25 yards! A few things I have experienced when shooting this particular powerful revolver in "Double Action", from 25 yards. First, the Ruger Alaskan 454 has to be held, with a "Vise" like grip, preventing the powerful Ruger Alaskan from shifting slightly in the grip of the shooting hand. If this happens, it will mimic a shooting flinch, and result in an inaccurate shot. Second, shooting this revolver "Double Action" from a distance of 25 yards, requires a deliberate slow fire, and "Staging" of the cylinder, to keep proper "Sight Alignment". When these two principles are strictly followed along with the basic shooting fundamentals, the Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan 454 with only a 4.5" sight radius can be "Precison Accurate"!
You are not mentioning 460 S&W mag , it is the most versatile hunting handgun you get more velocity with a longer bbl but you may need a crossdraw holster .
You're way tougher than I am! My absolute limit anymore is 44 Magnum, and that's using a 7-1/2 Redhawk. The 454 Casull has more energy at 100 yards than the 44 Magnum has at the muzzle. That's some serious power! Props to you for handling it that well!
Well since you have Redhawk, 44 mag can get crazy to. These numbers are comparing standard ( underloaded) 44 mag. Original 44 mag loads developed 1200 ft/lb. And if you want 454 fun in your 44 redhawk..BB and Underwood 340 grain +P+ gets up there. And Redhawk is the right tool for those.
Some range experiences are worth it. I had ODR and decided to get some work in with my p220 w German 45 acp and got talked into my 1st 50 cal rifle experience. Then came the 454 . Some dances are so beautiful you only do them once, then enjoy the memories.
1992 I was looking for shed antlers and eating blueberries on the Denali Hywy Ak.Old ww2 Vet drives up.Says hay hippie wears your gun?He says get a 454 like this before you come back out here!
Sootch00 send that cylinder in to TK Custom and get their stainless steel moon clip for 45 ACP and that moon clip allows 460 Rowland, 45 Super, 451 Detonic’s and 45 Winchester magnum to be held and shot too. Making that revolver supremely versatile. Use Starline brass for the auto loader cartridges.
sootch00, I have been a subscriber for a long time and have not commented, until now. When anyone shoots a revolver 'Single Action' with a 2 handed grip, ONLY hammer back with OFF HAND. Our grip is the only connection we have with the weapon, every time you hammer back with 'grip hand' you are repositioning your grip and can lose control of the revolver, or at very least change point of aim. I have tested this extensively and it is True, try it, what have you got to lose? A bad habit. 🙂
Dear Sirs, living in Denmark and not being allowed a lot of guns, I still enjoy watching this content. I shot a 357 in Florida during business trip...with 6" barrel, and I was not able to double tap on human torso from 7 yards (could easily do with a 9mm without training). I reckon with some training I could place follow up shots with 357.....but 44...or 454? 😊 Greetings
Sootch your a brave man and a glutton for punishment. I have one with the 9 inch barrel and 2x8 Leupold scope. Fantastic at 100 yards. You can “stage” the trigger in double action very easily. I just love it. Thanks bud.
Outstanding content once again! I have this gun and had it sent to TK customs and cut for moon clips and shooting .45ACP is a real pleasure! I love the flexibility to be able to shoot those rounds as well.
I remember when my dad bought one of these to carry when he would go bow hunting. He took me to the range one day and asked me if I wanted to try shooting it. To this day, it's the only pistol he or I have ever owned that I was afraid to shoot lol
I carry this on my ankle , Glock 40 in my chest rig and my Marlin sbl 4570 on my shoulder when I woods walk! 😂 Joking aside i own all 3 and love this revolver 👊🤠
Ive had mine since 2013, super happy with it, shoots insane good groops as well though the short barrel, i only shoot handloads through it and ive maxed it out will full charge plus, really awsome revolver
Sootch, do you reload for the 45 LC? I love that caliber. If you need a really mild load for that beast try 45 Schofield ammo. 45 Schofield is just a shorter version of the 45 LC.
I have the variant with a 5" barrel. I did not want the one with the shorter barrel as you would be sacrificing some of the power of the cartridge as well as the shorter sight radius being less conducive to practical accuracy. I am a relatively big guy and in a vertical shoulder holster under a loose fitting jacket it disappears nicely. Last but not least the 5" barrel variant has a distinctive barrel shape so anybody familiar with Ruger's line up could tell at a place it's a .454 Casull. Granted that I would only have .45 Colt ammo in it when carried around town for possible defensive use, nevertheless I like that it could have a little extra intimidation effect. But in general I like the ability to switch back and forth between different power levels as desired simply by keeping track of what ammo is in which speed loader and changing out when needed. As I live in Wyoming and may have to deal with critters that want to play king of the food chain and are well equipped to make their case then I see the .454 Casull as a desirable weapon to have. Two final notes. During the last period of ammo scarcity I found that .454 Casull ammo was easier to find than .45 Colt. Secondly I had tried to see if I could get it to take .45 ACP with moon clips. Unfortunately there wasn't enough room between the rear of the cylinder and the frame to accommodate that. I was slightly disappointed but couldn't fault Ruger that their weapon couldn't do something it was never advertised to do.
Wrist buster. If you live in Alaska, OK, I can see that. In the CONUS, .44 Mag works for me. Buffalo Bore makes some serious ammo and I have some for .44 Mag.
Just a thought , I wonder if the 45 Colt being a shorter case is leaving a carbon ring and maybe causing the brass to bind against the carbon in the cylinder , Great review 👍
Yes it will... I shoot 45 Schofield and 45 Special in my 454 Casull and 460 S&W's and this CAN be an issue if shooting a lot of shorter rounds without a using a chamber brush between case length changes. Remember that 45 Colt and lower are very low pressure cartridges, and while you might get some carbon accumulation, you won't erode the cylinder. Note also that on max loads for 454 Casull, sticking is not uncommon due to expansion of the brass casings being so close to the brass elasticity. Case length growth is crazy on rounds with this much pressure.
I have a SRH Toklat. It has a 5" barrel that helps with felt recoil and increases MV and ME. I had Wild West Guns machine it for moon clips and give it a trigger job. It will fire any .45 caliber round with the exception of .460 S&W.
I have this Alaskan and love it! recoil is controllable for me, however I have lifted weights for years and have forearms that look like clubs LOL Also the accuracy is surprising for a short barrel. It shoots better than I can with my pistol vise. I would buy another if Ruger would make limited run in 480 cal
They will come out easier if you shoot the 454 first then lesser power ammo 2nd , it leaves burn marks inside the cylinder sticking the spent shells in the cylinder , or just stick to one type of ammo while at the range
The 454 casull produces more energy than both the 475 linebaugh and the 500 linebaugh out of revolvers with equal barrel lengths. Only the 460 S&W and 500 S&W produces more muzzle energy in production handgun cartridges.
had a ruger redhawk in 45 colt....found some 360grn hardcast bullet. loaded 21grns of H110 rifle powder, wasn't quite a 454 but much more than a tame 45 colt. also double tape sold the same loads.
This was my dream gun for over nearly 20 years. Colion Noir’s Alaskan video reminded me of this bear “babayaga” beauty. Finally had chance to buy the 454 Casull version. Loved it a LOT, however I couldn’t get the empty shells out of the drum. Sent it back to retailer and ordered a 480 Ruger version. Been gutted when same issue was occurring. Gave it back to retailer again and was waiting 8 months but nothing happened. Being from Central Europe, it’s difficult to get in touch with Ruger to get the issue sorted. So now I have love of my life laying on dedicated shelf in my safe and looking at it like on Lenin in mausoleum from time to time.
Hey, I love your videos specially, this one I have a Taurus raging bull in this caliber and I also have a 480 Ruger super Redhawk, which parent case is the the shorter version of the .475. I think you misspoke.
I rented this a few times at "The Place To Shoot" on Jantzen Beach in Oregon back in the mid-2000s. I fired probably a total of about 20 rounds through it with 260gr. Magtech Casull loads in those few range visits....it's an absolute animal. I let my father shoot it once....he's not a gun guy or a shooter.....and it dislocated his thumb. And yes, I thoroughly warned him about the recoil lol. Me, I'd probably get the version with the 7.5" barrel, but I'm not sure. Gun Broker has a few for sale right now.
Great review as always. The Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan is an absolute beast, and you did a fantastic job showing why it’s such a solid choice for anyone heading into bear country. I really appreciate how you break things down in a way that’s easy to follow and super informative. That said, I really don’t like the inclusion of the deleted scenes at the end. Not sure why you’re doing this: it feels anticlimactic and not funny, just my opinion. Otherwise, keep up the awesome work.
When in bear country it's on my chest. Only a little hope if they really want you. Recoil and sound are not factors when you are about to die. When I've had to use firearms I've never heard or felt the discharges. If you like true horsepower in your hands check out Gary Reeder firearms in Flagstaff AZ. I hope he or his son are still around. He killed a bull e;ephant with a TC Contender and it broke his wrist. I think he had barreled it for a 505 Jefferies. I could be wrong. That was thirty years back. He did great work.
I bought a 454 conversion and my boss said you know that cost $2 around I said yeah I know but when somebody comes to my window at 3:00 in the morning and I can pull it out of my pillow I'll spend two bucks
The first time I saw this revolver was in the movie Faster starring Dwayne Johnson. It was his character’s sidearm in the film. Looked like it was a beast in the movie even though he was shooting it one handed. Lol. Really good movie BTW. I would like to own the 5 inch version. Wish Ruger hadn’t discontinued it.
Getting hit by that projectile is pretty nasty, but the main stopping power comes from the shotgun-esque effect of the unburnt powder pelting the target with that 2 inch barrel
I would polish the cylinders or send it back to Ruger with cases sticking that bad. Mine doesn't do that. But I bought mine in 2016 maybe the cylinders were just smoother.
I was first made aware of this revolver and cartrage while watching the movie Faster new in 2010 on Rogers on demand staring Dwayne Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton, fabtastic movie and the revoler was used to great effect❤
I own a Ruger Redhawk in .44 magnum with a 2.5" barrel too. The stock wood grips look nice, but I just know they wouldn't tame the recoil of a snubby .44; so, I had to buy Hogue aftermarket grips for the revolver.
I bought this one over the Smith & Wesson .500 for four reasons:
1. It holds 6 rounds
2. The grip feel is perfect for smaller hands.

I hand load. Light 500s are great and cheaper than any factory 45.
I've heard that Ruger over builds/designs their guns to make sure they handle the work load. Excellent American gun company!

HOPE EVERYONE HAD A GREAT THANKSGIVING 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦃🦃🦃 GOD BLESS AMERICA‼️‼️‼️
.454 Casull really shines out of a snubby
Nice! You handle the recoil very well. I would love to have one of these.
Hey, I love your videos specially, this one I have a Taurus raging bull in this caliber and I also have a 480 Ruger super Redhawk, which parent case is the the shorter version of the .475. I think you misspoke.
Thanks I enjoyed this very much so…………… I went out today a purchased a NAA in .22 short.😬
I remember Dwane Johnson carried this gun in the 2010 movie faster as a wheel gun it has no equals, as long as you use speed loaders!
I hunt with my 6'' Super Redhawk, and I really enjoy it.
Great video nice ruger super hawk Alaskan gun that a beast thanks for sharing sootch00
I was just looking at one today might just sold me on it.
Sootch00 is the best!! I'm a long time subscriber and I always enjoy his video's.
You're forgetting 500 linebaugh. This is a great gun in that cartridge
I would polish the cylinders or send it back to Ruger with cases sticking that bad. Mine doesn't do that. But I bought mine in 2016 maybe the cylinders were just smoother.
This gun is made for 45colt +p more power than a 45 colt but not as punishing as 454
Now you’re talking Don !!
That's a lot of hand cannon, love the Rugers!!
If any hand gun makes you develop a flinch it'll be this one.
DANG!!
Really wanted to see it's performance in gel blocks!
The neat thing is it also uses the heaviest 45 Colt loads too.
👀. Holy crap!!! 👀. 💪. I know your wrists were SCREAMING for you to stop.
I thought only the blackhawck came with wood grips
It looks like you manage the recoil. 1,800 FPS from that short barrel?
Hey sootch00, does your watch still work after all the recoil?
That bad boy got more bite than bark. Thank you for the video.😅
