I believe you could from a Standard Manufacturing single action replica since it's made from 4140 steel and rated for +p loads. But I'd still double-check with the manufacturer first..
Back in the eighties when I was packing and guiding in the Rocky Mountains I carried a Super Blackhawk cut down to 4 5/8 and my load was a Hardcastle semi wadcutter over 22 grains of 2400 which was a very stout load. I think you've got that beat. But as you said, not quite as stout as my .454 Casull. TC
lol no and to be honest it is hard to control this load with a standard plowhandle. I'm sure when you were up there You were familiar with John Linebaugh Caleb has ordered a 500 linebaugh should be here in a month or so. lol im just practicing
Love my Blackhawk 45 Colt. I reload and have shot 325gr at about 1200fps which does wake me up and the trigger guard beats up my middle finger. My normal is 250gr and 325gr at 850 to 950 fps. I carry it when hunting with my Marlin 1895 45-70. Overkill for my current hunting but it makes me feel good. Seems like the only time it gets shot is around the campfire before the bottle gets passed. Be safe and have fun.
I loaded some 180 grain jacketed hollow point using 454 casual trimmed down to length 1280 fps at the muzzle 😎👍🇺🇸 large frame Smith and Wesson... nice video 👍
Well..I take the weekend off for a granddaughter's birthday party in Nashville, and missed this video coming out. If you don't go with a Belt MTN. basepin, at least get an extra power spring from Wolf. It's cool to see that load chronographed, and really cool of you to associate that load with me.. somehow 😁. I'm back to studying on either putting a brass Bisley style grip frame on mine or looking for a Ruger Bisley grip frame. I don't want to rob my Bisley Vaquero .....
@@Real11BangBang I was hoping for a video from you on the .45 Colt Blackhawk..and am elated you're enjoying it for it's power potential. I like .44 Magnum still...but heavy and hot .45 Colt is more gooderer 😁
I had a Ruger Super Blackhawk, with wood grips, split with the first shot. I went with Pachmayer after that. I know you wont but it changes the recoil.
I have a OLD Vaquero. Always wanted a good hot load for it. Thanks............. will be looking for another bullet however. Would rather have a HP or Soft Point Jacketed bullet.
Recoil is slightly less than a equally loaded .44 Mag. John Linebaugh writing says 3 tons hits the frame with .45 Colt and slightly over 3 tons for .44 Mag. The beauty of the Colt is it shoots softer and delivers more energy and KO power. A larger bore is the reason.
@@jorgesolis9468the hottest modern .45 Colt loads have more kinetic energy than .44 magnum, but not by much. That said you can only load those ones in guns rated for them- and your cowboy action guns are generally NOT rated for that.
@@N0sf3r4tuR1s3n I still wouldnt be so sure about that commercially 44 mag still beats 45 colt energy wise handloading wise due to thicker cylinder walls the 44 mag has a higher max psi also for handloading not to mention .429 bullets are sleeker and penetrate deeper than .454 bullets also
@@jdoerr779 pounds per square inch your comment sure shows how little you understand about ballistics or energy and maybe a few laws of newton like energy cant be created or destroyed
Yes sir! I have the ruger blkhwk with the longer barrel and ouched out a few of those 24gr of 110 and then backed it down to 21gr. I had a ruger redhwk .454 casull that i traded for a blkhwk .357/38/9mm conversion 4 1/2” barrel, bc it was just too…well it hurt when i shot it! If its not comfortable to shoot it will be harder to have any kind of follow up shot imo. I do hunt with my blkhwk .45 colt and win ‘94 levergun with .325gr gc lasercast n 21gr 110. Thats more managable and puts them down! I do love my rugers…i wish the cylinder gaps were tighter tho! Great video guys!!
One of the easiest and safest ways to ensure these large frame Ruger only loads never wind up in a gun for which they are not suited is to take advantage of the cylinder length of the large frame Blackhawk. Its cylinder is longer than that on a Colt Peacemaker (and its clones), the New Vaquero, and other such unsuitable guns. When I began playing with these heavy loads, I simply ordered a bullet mold from Veral Smith of Lead Bullet Technologies for a 300 grain LFN design. Veral will place the crimp groove wherever you like. I had him locate it so that a loaded round is too long for a Colt length cylinder, effectively precluding its use in those guns. With a pretty good bucket full of Colts of various generations, I really didn't want to damage one. This approach makes that well neigh impossible, the cylinder won't rotate with these loads in place. I sleep better at night knowing that. Oh, and yes - get a Bisley grip frame. Midway sells one. Takes some filing and fitting, but well worth the effort.
I love Ruger revolvers such a great value and if you hand load great versatility. I have a flattop 44 special that I love just wish I had the bisley grip frame for it. Also have a sp101 french police issue with the trausch grips that are the best grips for a small revolver like that. Only complaint about Ruger is the radius of the trigger. Under recoil it hurts the bottom of my finger at the edge of my finger nail. I don't have that problem with colt or Smith. Another great video I really enjoy your channel.
Bought my new .45 Colt 7.5" Blackhawk in 92' for $240 tax included. It has shot sub 2" at 80 yds with 300gr XTP's and 23gr H110. John Linebaugh opened the door to the true potential of the .45 Colt. I now have the gun in a "Super" ( 76' Bicentennial Dragoon grip frame, Super hammer, Belt MTN base pin, steel ejector housing, and shimmed cylinder stop) configuration with opened up cylinder throats for .452" boolits. I cast the Lee 452-300RF modified plain base at 315gr Bhn 15. Brought it out to Yellowstone for Griz protection. No close calls with a Bear but a cow Moose almost trampled us.
I had Gary Reeder's outfit work over my .45 Blackhawk stainless. My daughter carried it for hiking in Alaska for awhile but started using a Mossberg 590. I load my .41 mag about 1600fps with 215g swc. About the same energy as here.
@ericoverdorff8880 I checked my old reloading manual. My max load of 18.0 grains of AA no.9 was 1582 fps. That was using a Laser cast 215g swc. Note: this is not a recommendation. I'm simply looking at my old notes from about 2001. Thanks.
@ericoverdorff8880 my old loading data shows a max of H110 of 22.9 grains. Not sure if I ever loaded that. Again, this is not a recommendation. Thanks.
@ericoverdorff8880 thanks. Unfortunately spine and neck issues make it very unwise to shoot full house loads anymore. I can enjoy the reports of those that still can.
I am firmly a 45 Colt fan but it is pretty neat how fast you 41 magnum guys can push pills. I would assume that you are running gas checks, right? I can get away with just shy of 1400fps with my plain base 255gr SWC without leading. (18B)
I have a T/C Contender in 44 magnum/44 Hotshot with choke. Pull the choke and shot some super hot 44s a local guy I know loaded. I ended up shooting 2 rounds then gave my wrist a break. Hot 44s are BRUTAL
WOW! My first handgun was a Super Blackhawk with a 7 inch barrel. I was probably 21 when I got it. I loved that pistol, very accurate and fairly easy to shoot.
Howdy big man. I have had my blackhawk 45 for almost 15 years now. Wonderful gun! Mine has a 7 1/2 barrel. Mine also came with wooden grips new. I havent reamed mine. To be honest I only shoot Hornady XTP's through it. It's a welcome addition to my Ruger collection. It does everything my Suoer Black Hawk does and maybe more?
Your opening clip looks like my dad the first time he shot my Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk with a .44 Magnum load. The indoor range we were at did not allow magnums so we had to shoot .44 Special through it (believe it or not, Houston actually had some ordinance banning shooting magnum ammo at the time, but you could shoot full powered rifle rounds. Fortunately that idiocy has since gone away.). I stepped out and ask the guy behind the counter if we could shoot one .44 Mag cartridge just so my dad could feel the difference. I loaded the gun up with 5 Specials and 1 Magnum. The specials were like shooting a .22 but when that Magnum lit up his arm did exactly what yours did sweeping upper left. He turned to me in shock I actually used to have rubber grips on my super blackhawk because the thin wood grips were so slick and thin...but have since took them off and in time have gotten the thin wood grips to work for me without feeling so hard.
That plastic used in those grips has a habit of shrinking over time. So you definitely want to change those out. Plus, I like a thicker, fuller grip that fills my hand. It gives you more surface area to hang on to, especially with those nice, heavy loads.
Tc contender of course I jumped the gun too soon😊 Now image if Italy would just beef up material and frame of the ssa and Remington 75. Now that's a gun I'd pay extra to own. I think I've solved how I'm going to complete my Remington collection, with a combination. As soon as I pay for my double barrel surprise Mountain man
@@Real11BangBang freedom arms a Wyoming company did so on purpose to handle its own cartridge work( .454 casull, 500 Linbaugh, ect) ups. A premium revolver for a premium $. Well beyond my budget.
The heavy loaded 44 magnum will out penetrate the 45 Colt. Max Prasac wrote a Gun Digest Book of Hunting Revolvers. Two tests were done between the 45 Colt and 44 magnum. In both tests the best 44 magnum loads out penetrated the 45 Colt loads. I highly recommend Max Prasac’s books.
That's not an accurate statement. 2 bullets of equal shape and construction, one .452 and one .429 travelling at the same velocity the, .429 will penetrate further given the resistance of the target medium being the same. Where the .452 bullet has an advantage is that in revolvers in .45 Colt and .44 magnum with equal length cylinders the .452 bullet can weigh considerably more without exceeding the length of the cylinder. And because of the larger surface area at the base of the bullet (for propellant gasses to push against) it can be driven to a higher velocity with less pressure. And being of considerably larger volume, the .45 Colt bullet can also be seated deeper in the case and again make use of a longer bullet giving it a weight advantage and result in deeper penetration. Another advantage is reduced case head thrust due to the larger square area of the .45 Colt case head. So, while the .44 magnum is a great cartridge in its own right, the .45 Colt is capable of more power in any revolver with adequate strength in its cylinder.
You are exactly right, but in my experience, shooting hogs and deer, you will be hard pressed to see the difference in terminal performace between a properly loaded 44 magnum, and a 30k psi 45 colt with similar bullets. Ive been reloading for an accusport 45 colt ruger bisley for years, and have settled on a 255 swc driven to 1300 fps with enforcer powder. This is actually a starting load from the ruger blackhawk only section ofbthe western powder manual. It has shot clean through everything so far.
I've got a. 44 super blackhawk with a 4-5/8 barrel and some handloads that recoil like that. My Ruger Blackhawk. 45 has a 5-1/2 barrel but a bisley frame that helps tame those heavy loads.
Ok run this in only the small frame rugers...got it. No seriously my ruger super blackhawk os 44 mag. I have a Rossi 16 inch m92 in 45 colt and im not sure if it can handle this or not. Probably not gonna risk it but damn that looks like a handful but fun.
back in the 1960s or 70s (don't recall when) Ruger got sued by a fool lawyer who was out hunting and "dry" firing his weapon in the back seat. It went off, his companion was shot and he blamed the gun. Ruger lost that suit due to a zealot judge. after that, all Rugers were emblazoned with a long and ugly product warning that lawyers assured Ruger would ward of similar law suits (it didn't). Anyway, a term used then and forgotten now: I used to have my Father in Law's Blackhawk(now here it the term); "Pre paragraph". it had the original hammer with the hammer mounted firing pin. That sucker could shoot brutal loads.
had a ruger redhawk 4" barrel, found a recipe for 360grn slug with 18-21 grns of H110 rifle powder. did not have a chrony at the time but from the printed data assumed i was getting 1100fps, also double tap sold this load over the counter.
I reloaded for a Contender pistol and with good brass loaded a 300 gr XTP and loaded hot . Thouse rounds are not suitable in most revolvers but they were very accurate. Barrel was 12 inches .
try soaking or oiling the heack out of your grips i make my own grips to fit my hand ,oak ,hickory ,wild cherry ,burled sweet gum ,maple and some exotic hard woods they are hard to work with my pocket knife i rough them out then carve to fit my hand i always oil finish them to help the fibers hold to gather lemon oil works great my loads go through propane tanks like going through hot butter leaving a 2/ 3 inch exit
i shoot a old model vacaquro works great but do inspect my cylinder pretty close getting one made by a friend whos a gunsmith ,a 5 shot tough as all get out 45 mag rounds no problem
Well you appear to be able to safety get that compact revolver to digest those loads and stay in one piece, but I see the base pin and sight screw were not happy with it. Excellent for a hunting load for non-dangerous game or circumstances. For defense against a charging bear you better get the bear with the first shot because due to the recoil it does not look like you will have time for a second shot. Your would probably be ok for bison hunting lol. Seriously I would like to see how the timing and cylinder tolerances hold up.
I love .45 colt, I have an Ruger old model Vaquero, a Ruger New Model BlackHawk and a Standard Manufacturing all in .45 colt. I also own a Marlin case hardened CBC, Cowboy Competition, JM stamped in .45 colt with a octagon barrel. I believe you could from a Standard Manufacturing single action replica since it's made from 4140 steel and rated for +p loads. But I'd still double-check with the manufacturer first.
My go to load with a 7.5 inch barrel is 23.5 grains 296 and a Speer 300 grain jacketed hallow point. Haven’t seen the Speer hollow points in a while so I’m using some other brand with about the same results. I’ve seen a smith & wesson that someone shot one of the Ruger loads through. There wasn’t much left.
Been thinking about the Ruger Blackhawk 45 LC combination with the 45acp cylinder included. Any idea why they don’t just make that in 454 so it would shoot all three? Figured I’d use max loads like you have in the LC if I got it.
i think that the 45 colt 45 acp flattop is considered a weaker frame then the standard blackhawk dont quote me on that though. also the 454 in the ruger frame generally requires a 5 shot cylinder just so there is a bit more meat between the chambers. thanks for watching.
@@patriotpreacher43 Ruger Super Blackhawk runs a factory stainless .454 Casull 5-shot and .480 Ruger 5-shot. They are Bisley grip frame and have Super Blackhawk features.
I fired the 310 grain Lee over a stiff charge of L’il Gun in an early New Model with 7.5” barrel, alloy grip frame and the plastic grips. Heaviest recoil I’ve felt, but the load was very consistent.
Enforcer has become my favorite powder for ruger 45 colt loads. It wont get quiet the velocity as h110, but you can load it up or down and its more forgiving. Im getting 1300 fps with a 255 swc with the starting load. 5.5 inch barrel.
45 Colt and heavy loads will actually recoil a little bit harder because it's lighter because it's got larger holes in the cylinder and Barrel. But heavy loads of 44 magnum will hit as hard if not harder because you can drive them faster.
The gas checks sound more efficient going through the forcing cone . Ive got a Bisly picked up in trade , put a proper bace pin with the set screw . Havent worked it yet only because its to shinny Lol. . I like carbon steel and will trade when we meet . If your acustomed to being snookered , got a APC cylender to go with it and grips like the ones you got rid of Lol. T/C/E
Ive been trying out enforcer powder in my 5.5 inch bisley ruger 45 colt. With 255 grain swc cast bullets, im getting around 1350 fps with starting loads, and really good accuracy. Enforcer is way more forving than h110. Meaning you can load it down without having to worry about it.
Pachmyr (or similar) grips go along way to taming heavy recoil, at least the comfort portion of it. Figured that out when I bought a raging bull in 454 and the grips were not comfortable with heavy loads.
Learned my lesson in 1989 about hot loads! Luckily the Smith & Wesson I had was a custom shop model ! I survived with minor scars ! I only load to a warm comfy accurate loading! Recoil and muzzle blast don't appeal to me as much as rapid accurate fire on target as the hunting situation dictates. Charging mountain lion, Feral hogs and two big bears later ! I will take fast accurate shots over massive power produced on both ends! I will leave that to Scott on Kentucky Ballistics 😂😂❤! Blessings to you and best of luck with the beatings 😂❤!
1858 remington made by ubirty will work just fine i mix black with modern and tested it with a full mag load. plus if u buy a black powder gun from colt it has to pass the 3x test and they all are made ubirty. then colt goes through them make it shoot perfect and tested then they get the colt name i watched a video by colt on it. the remington is a very strong frame gun plus u can switch the cylinders fast on it . plus i like the idea of shooting cap and ball or 45 colt i have 4 cylinders and 2 converters for each gun of the set of 2. u would love shooting them got them from a retired colt gunsmith/marksmen and they shoot very good plus they were only 1000 bucks for everything which was a lot of stuff. a 44 mag shoots about 1250 to 1500 fps
I feel for you. I’ve got lots of cousins and one uncle still alive in the Netherlands. I’m glad my dad immigrated and eventually ended up here in the U.S.
Put a Super Blackhawk gripframe, hammer, and trigger off a beat up super on my 30 Carbine Blackhawk and didn't have to do any fitting other than a trigger job which is the first thing I do to any of my Rugers.
I have a stainless Redhawk with a 5.5 barrel in .45. First thing I did was change the grips. They were the wood ones but I upgraded to Hogue oversize with a tail cap to give me enough to hang on to (wood of course). I shoot those loads out of it, FUN at the range. Especially when the guy next to you has a 44mag and thinks it's the tits. (until you let one loose, that is.🤣)
I’ve shot that powder charge behind a 250 grain bullet. I have a 5.5 inch Blackhawk with the Bisley grip. I shot a deer once with a 44mag 10 inch barrel . 310 hard cast gas check and 19 grains. At 50 yards it went through the deer and deep enough in the ground I couldn’t find the bullet.
I have the same make & model of Blackhawk! Killed a mule deer with it @ 30 yards- Winchester white box 250 grain round nose.I have new rosewood grips from the Ruger factory! &NO its not for sale!
I am curious to know how much additional velocity the longer barreled model Super Blackhawks would get with the exact same load? From the chronograph readings, that load appears to be erratic in that gun and could use some fine tuning.
I'm thinking this might be the perfect anti-assault weapon if attacked by a pair of those North Alabama Grizzley's. You obliterate the first one from a frontal attack and the recoil whacks the one sneaking up behind, in the head, putting it face first in the dirt. One shot, two bear rugs.
I have a Blackhawk 5.5" Wanted the 45colt. Have a convertible to 45acp. For the 45acp is cheaper to shoot now-a-days . I personally don't have a problem with 44mag but i Wanted more Versatility Like I mentioned the 45 ACP is cheaper to shoot. And Underwood makes a 325 grain Hunting ground that is very close to 44 magnum specs. The 45 Colt Underwood hunting ammo at 325 It's only about a 100 feet per second Is slower than 44 magnum. And the 45 Colt is heavier. So you don't really need to hand load to get 44 magnum power out of your 45 Colt. But follow underwood recommendation on what firearm to put it in These are not meant for the weaker guns Colt Or it's clowns cannot handle this pressure
That load is really something. With my Ruger SBH, I've loaded 300 gr Hornady XTPs over a charge of 19.0 gr of H110, giving me 1230 fps. But that was with a 7.5" barrel. It's the book max, and I wouldn't use it in my S&W 629, 5" barrel. I'm concerned about those high and low rounds though. If you hand-weigh the charges, I'd back down a little as it might be excessive pressure causing erratic velocities, even if it is a published load. Otherwise, you might want to check if there's something going on with whatever setup you use to throw the powder. Anyway, great video. Good shootin, and have fun!
Good Morning Guys. I knew you guys have Pheasants, but I did not know you had elephants. Do you guys use a fork lift to pick up the spent shells. anyways, have a good day.
That will definitely do some damage on the receiving end! I have a couple of old Vaqueros and I have fired some hot-loaded Buffalo Bore ammo in one of them. It's manageable but I wouldn't really say it's a pleasant experience due to the arthritis in my old hands and wrists. Nevertheless, seeing something downrange turn to scrap makes it fun enough to do occasionally.
You need a proper rear sight on this revolver. Forgetting the grips, the rear sights on Ruger revolvers is the weak link on these guns. It always has been. It's a pretty good sight. But not great. A truly great sight for these guns is the Bowen Rough Country Rear Sight. They can be had for around $110.00 and are worth every penny. They are machined from steel and absolutely will not move.
Sight bouncing, pins working out, cylinder stop moving. I would say you've gone as far as you should! 😅😅. I have a bisley blackhawk with a five and half inch barrel in .45 colt. I was gona do what you've done, but about 1100 fps, I chickened out !! Great fun, thanks for the info.
LOL. The average velocity with the original string came out to 1,258 fps. The original string without the highest and lowest readings, counting only four shots comes out to 1,258 fps. And your final string with the two substitute shots comes out to 1,258 fps. This is why I never throw out the highs and lows. They compensate for each other and the strings average out about the same. It's funny though, that these came out right to the number.
just watched the video and I was impressed . I have ordered a S&W model 25 45colt and was told by S&W that it would handle +P loads but not +P+ if it was built after 1999 . but my question is exactly what does gas checked mean and how does it work with a revolver . hope you get this and I thank you for your time
well a gas check is a small coper plate attached to the base of the projectile as pushing such a big bullet so fast tends to cause gass cutting in the lead. Some people do claim that you can get away with powder coating as a replacement for the gas check. But I have just found the gas check Makes for better accuracy when shooting a round this high powered
Ruger really needs to do something about their grip fitting. I throw their wood grips in the trash and use the screws and bolsters on my own grips that I make. I use red oak. It holds up very well. The sad thing is, Ruger could fit their SA grips far better with just a little bit more effort. The last couple of Ruger SAs I've purchased were so bad that they were barely usable. Gaps and hang over. And they move when you shoot the revolver. Totally unacceptable.
not to be too nit picky but most handloaded 44 mags are more powerful than '44 mags' Same for .357 actually. I remember when they came out the .357 had factory rounds running over 1500 fps with 158 grain bullets. The poor 44 mag fares even worse... safe loads for 240-250 grain bullets in manuals run easy 1350-1400 fps.... most factory loads run around 1250... apples to apples? if the Ruger is so special strength wise.... and I have no reason to doubt that..... what you are shooting is a max or better pressure 45 colt load.. Which is fine but Ruger also makes that same gun in 44 mag... I too have shot 44 mag all my life (well 73 on anyway) and some of my loads would cut my hand on the SBH corners are sharp on that gun LOL Soo... my warmish 44 mag load runs about 1250-1300 with a cast and coated 250 SWC or wide flat nose. my mild load is around 1100 fps with the same bullet. one load turns me into an uncontrollable flincher in less than 50 rounds
Quickload puts 20 grns LG under a Lee 300 grn cast out of a 6” (bullet travel) at 1120 fps & 18.3K psi at 1.580 OAL. Take this with a grain of salt since this is computer modeling based on “standards” for 45 Colt brass and chamber tolerances in the software. That said I’ve had good luck with QL in estimation of non standard loads.
There is so much to like about the Blackhawks that I am inclined (when I can afford it) to get one and have a gunsmith recut the chamber mouth to the proper size. P.S. how can you identify a large frame Blackhawk?
Maybe hotter than standard pressure 44 mag since from the same 4-5 inch barrel those max out at aroun 900-1000 ft lbs but if u want a hot load its hard to compete with the 340 gr +p+ from a 5.5 inch ruger they clocked it at 1401 fps and alaskan ballistics clocked them at *1200+* (had to go look again) from a 2.5 alaskan so they are hot yes but realistically definately not more than 44 mag
it all depends on how you measure power. that 44 mad load has a tko power of 29. Aria ballistic engineering has a 45 colt load of 420 Gr. Hard Cast LFN @ 1,100 FPS / 1,128 LBS / TKO - 29. So in reality they are pretty much the same as i said in the video
@@Real11BangBang idk o really dont trust the tko since according to the math there a 30-06 150 gr at 3100 fps is only 20 on that scale so by that standard the 44 mag and 45 colt are better than a kinda warm 30-06 from a 24 inch barrel
@jorgesolis9468 well when you take into consideration penetrative quality the 30-06 is lesser. We have a video on the subject. A 405 grain black powder 45-70 moving at 1,100 fps smokes a 150 grain 3006 doing 3100 fps all day penetrative nearly twice as far. The 30-06 delivers more energy on impact but does not maintain that energy enternaly that is why it is always good to look at fps of energy and tko
@@Real11BangBang depends on bullet construction also not to mention in the instances mentioned 30/06 beats 44 mag all around let's try a 180 gr 30/06 at 2820 fps only scores 22 still and 220 gr at 2410 fps scores 23 so yeah the tko is severely flawed and maybe is only relevant to pistol which even then a solid .429 bullet penetrates more than a .454 on frontal area alone same way a .357 can penetrate more than 44 mag through barriers if they're solids
Had a Super Blackhawk in 44 magnum that i shot a case full of h110 with 240 grn bullet with a 5 1/2 barrel...That gun was no fun to shoot. Would bark the skin off the knuckle of my little finger. Muzzle blast was horrible. Gun toted well but was a bear to shoot
I’ve used lil’gun in 454 and liked it as it doesn’t seem to be fill sensitive like 296 or 110. Not sure what to suggest as a starting load. I’m guessing 19 or 20 would probably be under what you’re shooting now but you might want to research if you go that route
Cant believe you had the balls to one hand that. I have a 7.5" bisley Blackhawk. 45 and i shot 350gr hardcast over 22.5gr of H110. That would break my skinny wrist if i did that

I loaded some 180 grain jacketed hollow point using 454 casual trimmed down to length 1280 fps at the muzzle 😎👍🇺🇸 large frame Smith and Wesson... nice video 👍
That is awesome! thanks
I don't want to rob my Bisley Vaquero .....
lol well you talked me into it. yes if i want to shoot one handed im gona have to have a bisley grip myself. il wait to see how yours turns out lol
@@Real11BangBang I was hoping for a video from you on the .45 Colt Blackhawk..and am elated you're enjoying it for it's power potential. I like .44 Magnum still...but heavy and hot .45 Colt is more gooderer 😁
Plowboy 45 magnum. That got a nice ring to it.
lol i think so
Ahhhh them " Bubbas pissin hot handloads".
I had a Ruger Super Blackhawk, with wood grips, split with the first shot. I went with Pachmayer after that. I know you wont but it changes the recoil.
yeah i have had them they do tame recoil
I have a OLD Vaquero. Always wanted a good hot load for it. Thanks............. will be looking for another bullet however. Would rather have a HP or Soft Point Jacketed bullet.
Recoil is slightly less than a equally loaded .44 Mag. John Linebaugh writing says 3 tons hits the frame with .45 Colt and slightly over 3 tons for .44 Mag. The beauty of the Colt is it shoots softer and delivers more energy and KO power. A larger bore is the reason.
More energy I mean I could care less for the ko factor but I think on the energy spectrum 44 still beats it
@@jorgesolis9468the hottest modern .45 Colt loads have more kinetic energy than .44 magnum, but not by much. That said you can only load those ones in guns rated for them- and your cowboy action guns are generally NOT rated for that.
@@N0sf3r4tuR1s3n I still wouldnt be so sure about that commercially 44 mag still beats 45 colt energy wise handloading wise due to thicker cylinder walls the 44 mag has a higher max psi also for handloading not to mention .429 bullets are sleeker and penetrate deeper than .454 bullets also
@@jorgesolis9468This comment is an admission that you do not understand what PSI stands for.

Great video guys!!
thankyou very much
One of the easiest and safest ways to ensure these large frame Ruger only loads never wind up in a gun for which they are not suited is to take advantage of the cylinder length of the large frame Blackhawk.
That’s a good idea!
Another great video I really enjoy your channel.
thankyou very much
Bought my new .45 Colt 7.5" Blackhawk in 92' for $240 tax included. No close calls with a Bear but a cow Moose almost trampled us.
that sounds like one sweet gun!
Got mine in '76' for $120.
Moose kill more people than bears, yet, due to Bullwinkle, we won't admit it... ☆
Thanks.
@Bob.W. I appreciate it. I work up for myself, but like to learn from what others do also. Can't have to much knowledge.
24 grains... Marone!
Nice looking Ruger. Crude grips:) Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
I don't have anything that would handle that load and I don't believe that I would want to try it. Very interesting though.
Great video guys. Wish more people would put out some new 45 colt stuff. How many videos do we need on plastic 9mm?
very true thankyou for watching
I have a 51/2 inch blackhawk ,great gun I lengthened the grip frame made some custom grips and added a super blackhawk hammer .
I have a T/C Contender in 44 magnum/44 Hotshot with choke. Pull the choke and shot some super hot 44s a local guy I know loaded. I ended up shooting 2 rounds then gave my wrist a break. Hot 44s are BRUTAL
oh yeah you can load them hot
He turned to me in shock
I actually used to have rubber grips on my super blackhawk because the thin wood grips were so slick and thin...but have since took them off and in time have gotten the thin wood grips to work for me without feeling so hard.
yes that 10.5 super blackhawk you have is an awsome gun. that was my first cartridge hand gun.
That plastic used in those grips has a habit of shrinking over time. So you definitely want to change those out. Plus, I like a thicker, fuller grip that fills my hand. It gives you more surface area to hang on to, especially with those nice, heavy loads.
100%

45 has a 5-1/2 barrel but a bisley frame that helps tame those heavy loads.
yeah im definitely going for a bisley grip for this one
These loads out of a 24" '92' Winchester replica pack a pretty respectable punch.
lol i bet they do
Ok run this in only the small frame rugers...got it. No seriously my ruger super blackhawk os 44 mag. I have a Rossi 16 inch m92 in 45 colt and im not sure if it can handle this or not. Probably not gonna risk it but damn that looks like a handful but fun.
The Rossi 92 can handle it.

back in the 1960s or 70s (don't recall when) Ruger got sued by a fool lawyer who was out hunting and "dry" firing his weapon in the back seat.
Oh yeah, the old 3 screw model, those things are worth a pretty penny today
had a ruger redhawk 4" barrel, found a recipe for 360grn slug with 18-21 grns of H110 rifle powder. did not have a chrony at the time but from the printed data assumed i was getting 1100fps, also double tap sold this load over the counter.
sweet!
I have that DT load and it is actually rated at 1200 FPS. With a 5.5 Bisley we are getting right close to that. They are brutal, to say the least 😂.

lol yes sir
I reloaded for a Contender pistol and with good brass loaded a 300 gr XTP and loaded hot . Thouse rounds are not suitable in most revolvers but they were very accurate. Barrel was 12 inches .
Great! Now I suddenly need a Blackhawk in .45...
lol thats what i told plowboy
try soaking or oiling the heack out of your grips i make my own grips to fit my hand ,oak ,hickory ,wild cherry ,burled sweet gum ,maple and some exotic hard woods they are hard to work with my pocket knife i rough them out then carve to fit my hand i always oil finish them to help the fibers hold to gather lemon oil works great my loads go through propane tanks like going through hot butter leaving a 2/ 3 inch exit
i shoot a old model vacaquro works great but do inspect my cylinder pretty close getting one made by a friend whos a gunsmith ,a 5 shot tough as all get out 45 mag rounds no problem
Very nice demonstration.
Glad you liked it!
Now I want a Blackhawk or vaquero. Damn it
lol well they aren't to hard to find
@@Real11BangBang ain't cheap though!
@@Real11BangBang thanks for the response/info!
I have a nice set of Chigs Grips on my Blackhawk.
1858 remington made by ubirty will work just fine i mix black with modern and tested it with a full mag load. plus if u buy a black powder gun from colt it has to pass the 3x test and they all are made ubirty. then colt goes through them make it shoot perfect and tested then they get the colt name i watched a video by colt on it. the remington is a very strong frame gun plus u can switch the cylinders fast on it . plus i like the idea of shooting cap and ball or 45 colt i have 4 cylinders and 2 converters for each gun of the set of 2. u would love shooting them got them from a retired colt gunsmith/marksmen and they shoot very good plus they were only 1000 bucks for everything which was a lot of stuff. a 44 mag shoots about 1250 to 1500 fps
yes that gun will work with smokless powder but NOT THESE ruger only loads
The 45 win mag can do it too and then some... extra cylender
Thats some Power!

I feel for you. I’ve got lots of cousins and one uncle still alive in the Netherlands. I’m glad my dad immigrated and eventually ended up here in the U.S.
Match polishing a Super Blackhawk gripframe to a Black Hawk enables you to put much bigger wooden grips like the Harrison Grips.
Put a Super Blackhawk gripframe, hammer, and trigger off a beat up super on my 30 Carbine Blackhawk and didn't have to do any fitting other than a trigger job which is the first thing I do to any of my Rugers.
Oh, how I miss my Blackhawks!
(until you let one loose, that is.🤣)
lol 100%
I get the same cut on my knuckle from my Vaquero. My Bisley Blackhawk is so much more comfortable when shooting plus P ammo.
RIP John Linebaugh 😓
I’ve shot that powder charge behind a 250 grain bullet. I have a 5.5 inch Blackhawk with the Bisley grip.
I shot a deer once with a 44mag 10 inch barrel . 310 hard cast gas check and 19 grains. At 50 yards it went through the deer and deep enough in the ground I couldn’t find the bullet.
that 10 inch 44 mag blackhawk was my first hand gun that thing was a beast!
I have the same make & model of Blackhawk! Killed a mule deer with it @ 30 yards- Winchester white box 250 grain round nose.I have new rosewood grips from the Ruger factory! &NO its not for sale!
You have the same barrel length as well?
I am curious to know how much additional velocity the longer barreled model Super Blackhawks would get with the exact same load? From the chronograph readings, that load appears to be erratic in that gun and could use some fine tuning.
I'm thinking this might be the perfect anti-assault weapon if attacked by a pair of those North Alabama Grizzley's. You obliterate the first one from a frontal attack and the recoil whacks the one sneaking up behind, in the head, putting it face first in the dirt. One shot, two bear rugs.
lol yup 100%
I have a Blackhawk 5.5"
Wanted the 45colt.
But follow underwood recommendation on what firearm to put it in
These are not meant for the weaker guns Colt Or it's clowns cannot handle this pressure
How about that load in a Henry Lever Action? Sub’d
I'm not sure I have never seen it suggested. I would definitely call henry and ask before I tried it
That load is really something.
I've loaded up to John Linebaugh's max with no issues.
Reminds me of the .500 Linebaugh. We love "BiG BoRe WheeL GuN's". Remember it only takes one round. Peace
Smith and Wesson 460 and BFR in 454 and of coarse s&w460 can also handle those.
yes just not any other actual 45 colt chambered guns
Good Morning Guys. I knew you guys have Pheasants, but I did not know you had elephants. Do you guys use a fork lift to pick up the spent shells. anyways, have a good day.
lol
Get a Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley 454 Casull and use the Garrett Cartridges of Texas 405 grain hardcast gas check RHO Redhawk Only load.
i am aware that is preþy hot. here lately i have been more into the 500 linbaugh
Sight bouncing, pins working out, cylinder stop moving. I would say you've gone as far as you should! 😅😅. I have a bisley blackhawk with a five and half inch barrel in .45 colt. I was gona do what you've done, but about 1100 fps, I chickened out !! Great fun, thanks for the info.
lol thanks
I had mine magna ported w hogue monogrips to keep my middle knuckle from being hurt
just watched the video and I was impressed .
Recoil Junky Approved!
lol thanks
Freedom arms model 83 also.
I put a belt mountain base pin in my ruger super Blackhawk 454 Bisley
A bisley will definitely help. Get the hogue rubber grip and it's almost a bisley
24 grains - you're begging for it to blow up.
No this is published load data and still well within the psi the gun can handle
Magnum or standard primers?
magnum
There is so much to like about the Blackhawks that I am inclined (when I can afford it) to get one and have a gunsmith recut the chamber mouth to the proper size.
P.S. how can you identify a large frame Blackhawk?
i beleave the modern flattop 45 convertibles are considered mid size frame
Plowboysghost says you have to measure the cylinder. Can't remember what the measurement was but you can Google it
2 digit in front of serial number. 3 is the smaller frame
Henry says you can shoot just about anything in their Big Boys for those who want to put this through a rifle
I love my pietta however I’m very careful with what I load it with , my Henry x model is another story
Cant believe you had the balls to one hand that. I have a 7.5" bisley Blackhawk. 45 and i shot 350gr hardcast over 22.5gr of H110. That would break my skinny wrist if i did that
lol it did draw a bit of blood
