Finally someone made a video about it, did the same in a property but I use a Henry waterproofer over the paper and even sometimes where paper is missing, great tip
Most likely there is no water barrier under the concrete floor and Red Guard could also be used there prior to flooring to keep moisture from the ground out.
I posted on your TikTok. The presence of a stud does not make the paper between the stud and the siding magically waterproof. However if you also red guard the stud, and sister that stud, the dwelling should be safe. The reason you need to red guard the floor for your interior walls is that there is probably not sufficient waterproofing under the slab and at the sides. Often a thin foam layer is added below the sill plate to keep water from leaching into the wood. You will probably also need to provide an underlayment for your flooring that allows for a damp concrete slab.
Hector AWESOME VIDEOS, Your very detailed and informative m. Greatly appreciate your interest in saving the small mom and pop homeowners money, and who are trying to do some of their ADU work them selves
good tip .. only question how do you apply redguard between the stud and old paper... it's not reachable or you need to remove stucco and this is the most affected area usually..
If you need to apply Redgard to the back of the stud most likely the paper is not is the condition to be salvaged. The best thing to do will be to install a new layer of paper. Ask the city inspector how to proceed. I would not have applied Redgard if my inspector did not approve it beforehand.
Hi I'm researching to get started on a garage to ADU conversion. How much did it cost you for design plans and getting the permits. Could you break down the costs? Thanks
I just had my city of LA inspector tell me I am unable to use red gaurd as described in this video. Do you have a link to LADBS that indicates alternative to the paper?
The city inspector recommended to use Redgard. If other brand offer the same kind of waterproofing then that should be ok. I would confirm with the city inspector if you are using other brands
Q: if the current walls of the garage don’t have any paper- just the exposed wood in my garage, do I need to add the paper? Or simply add red guard directly to the wood?
I have the same question. Were you able to find out? If no paper is there and it's only exposed wood if red guard can be applied or new paper? Plz let me know. thanks.
@@HektorCastillo You do need a stamp - even for a garage conversion - if you create any new openings in the existing walls. In which case, you'll need to get a structural engineer's stamp. I suspect you didn't need a stamped set in this case because you're the owner-builder on the project, used WFPP, and your door and window openings used existing headers(?).

actually, not true. you can use it to waterproof tour tile shower below the tile instead of some overpriced schluter system. was used in a new tiled walk-in shower in an adu.
Very good information this will help a lot of people! Thank you for sharing this information

GREAT INFORMATION 👍
HEKTOR , thank you 👍👍
Interesting! So you just brush it on?? I wonder if this also helps with termite's ? Also what if we red guard all the studs?? 🤔
Does there need to be red guard only if there is stucco exterior? There is wood slats on one of my sides of the garage. Thx
Can you use that red guard on the floor as a vapor barrier?
Loving these videos! Super informative , and tons of value. Thank you!

Design plans 3k. Some charge as much as 9k. Permits probably 1k but you also have electric panel permit (500). There are a few more small charges
Thanks for the tips ! Did your garage have a floor that was sloped ? Have you put sleepers over a floor to raise/level it? Thanks.
Another great video :)
What do you use on the cement floor? Redguard and then an underlay foam ?
Only Redgard 👍
Your da man! Hector for Mayor!
Does the exterior stucco need to be removed or just the dry wall from inside?
Thank you ima use this method
do you ever try using light garage steel to make adu. Let me know if you are interested in trying first one together
Is that redgard a plastic material once dried?
Yes it turns into a substance of plastic once dried
Hey Hektor,
What if the paper is completely falling off,,can you still apply redguard or install new moisture barrier paper?
The only person that can approve that kind of fix will be the local city inspector
What kind of main exterior door is that on the ADU? Brand? Cost? Thanks!
This is very helpful!!

Really darn good information!👍👍👍

Thanks boss!
Will it only be redgard? Or any other brand is ok?

If Natalie designs the ADU, then who do you use as a licensed architect to get the stamp for the building department?
You don't need one. A stamp is not required for a garage conversion.
