    ***Safety Warning***
    Perform this dashboard repair at your own risk. I am NOT a safety engineer, nor am I a qualified safety expert. I cannot guarantee that your passenger airbag will function properly in the event of an accident/collision.
    You can make relief cuts on the backside of the material where the airbag is to deploy. However, I cannot tell you how to perform this step. Use thought and caution before proceeding.
    Again, proceed at your own risk.

    Glad I found your video. I bought a G35 coupe couple months ago, great car. Dash is starting to cracked. Never thought about doing this instead of trying to find a whole dash at a yard or taking it to some shop that does this. Looks like a simple DIY and very cost effective.

    Awesome find on the leatherette and great tutorial! I’ve owned my 06 since new, and somehow my dash cracked after only a few years and it’s always bothered me. I’ve always held off on repairing because I never liked any of the options available. This looks great, I think I’ll finally pull my dash and give this a shot. Again, great work man!

    I was planning to do this but then chickened out and hired a professional. He found the foam was deteriorated by humidity such that he had to rip the foam off and refoam. Apparently its just a plastic shell with a consistent 1" or so foam layer. So anyway, if anyone else's foam is too jacked to re-use, refoamimg is an option.

    That’s nice and a good budget option. If anyone is looking to spend just a bit more you can order a plastic Coverlay cover, perfect fit, and you don’t have to pull the dash out.

    Wow! Beautiful work!! If I don't remove the dash (I really can't do that), then do you think the job would look pretty bad if I just tried to make perfect cuts around all the air vents, etc and glued it down while still in the car? I also was hoping not to peel off the existing seriously cracked vinyl. Do you think it might look even worse than doing nothing?

    • @Inner_Sanctum
      @Inner_Sanctum  Год назад +2

      Since I have experience removing this dash already, it took me about 45 minutes to pull it out of the car. Could definitely pull it out faster, but I like bagging and tagging all the hardware I remove. Also, I try to be really careful when pulling panels to not damage clips.

    • @Inner_Sanctum
      @Inner_Sanctum  5 месяцев назад

      Leave a lot of excess material so you can stretch easier into position. Wait until the glue drys fully before cutting the excess. If you don’t wait, the stress from trimming the material and it wanting to return to its original position will pull the material off the dash. It’s all above relieving stress.

    • @timothydaniels5760
      @timothydaniels5760 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks, I followed along with the video and purchased the recommended materials. Everything came out great.

    Great video and good work. Planning on doing the exact same thing, but I’m concerned about my passenger airbag. Do you know if that new material will rip Or lift up if the airbag deploys? Big concern for me. Even considered making some very shallow pre-cuts with a blade on the back of the new material in a big X shape over the passenger side of the dash, (pre-install) just in case. Thanks!

    • @Inner_Sanctum
      @Inner_Sanctum  Год назад +1

      I’m not a safety engineer, and do not want to be liable if something happens. So I cannot tell you “Yes” or “No”. However, my opinion is that an airbag would punch straight through this stuff if you made the cuts on the back side. The strength of the material comes from the fabric backing. Without the fabric backing, you could probably push a hole in the vinyl with your finger. It’s pretty soft stuff.

    • @Nino-xn7gm
      @Nino-xn7gm Год назад

      @@Inner_Sanctum My same thoughts. Do you think those pre-cuts would likely affect the overall look and outcome? How big of a risk?Would try not to get glue in those newly cut crevices, and obviously depends on how well you install, but again curious on your thoughts. Don’t want to apply all that time, glue and material just to end up with a big ugly X on my dash.

    • @Inner_Sanctum
      @Inner_Sanctum  Год назад +1

      @@Nino-xn7gm I think thin cuts with a razor knife, making sure only to cut the fabric backing, would turn out just fine. You’ll have to leave the fabric backing in place to not create a depth void on the surface. However, the glue will easily fill the cuts left by the knife and it won’t show through.
      Best thing to do is take a small sample piece and glue it down to cardboard or some other soft substrate and see if the cuts will be seen. Also, you can test how easy it is to punch through when it’s dry.

    • @Inner_Sanctum
      @Inner_Sanctum  Год назад +1

      Nice! I would say the first thing should be overall maintenance, even with low miles like that. These things are getting pretty old and time has taken its toll on a lot of the rubber and plastic parts.
      Performance wise, I always start with brakes and suspension. No point in making it fast if you can’t control it. Lol

    Did the vin plate stay on the dashboard when you removed it or did it stay on some structural piece below the dashboard?
    I'm considering doing this on my car.

      I drilled the rivets on the vin plate. Then reinstalled over the new material with new black rivets.
