  • I was contacted by a fellow youtuber who wanted to know if I would be interested in his motorcycle a 1978 jawa 634 oilmaster 350. and we got together and made a deal. now it is time to see what we got for a bike and if it will run. so lets get into the repairs and diagnoses to see if it will do just that.

I never grew to trust any of the oil injection systems, premix was always safe though (only myself to blame if I ruined the crank!). My only Soviet bike experience was with MZ but always wanted a twin-cylinder Jawa, they sound better than an RD350 in my humble opinion.

@dan - MZ is/was east german not soviet russian. What the soviets did was copy the german Wehrmacht BMWs and named it Ural.

Jawa, Ogar, CZ and Eso were all competitors in the Czech motorcycle business. They finally merged and continued to build superb, durable and very reliable 2 stroke bikes. Very competitive in motocross and enduros. It's a keeper.

I had a CZ 175 Trail bike in 1979 when I was a teenager. Heavy sod off road. After going through two pistons I scrapped it. This is bringing back memories. I was 14 when I stripped it down, every last nut and bolt and crankcase split. Re-bored and new piston. A lot of the parts on this look familiar.

Ignition is switched by pushing the key all the way in. To switch it off, pull the key just a little bit out, but dont pull it all the way, just a few mm - you will feel the spring tension as the key goes out. Thats what the "funky" groove on the key tip does. Turning the key left to right: 0 - lights off, 1 - parking lights, 2 headlight.

Interesting design and operation on the Jawa. I would have never looked for the kick starter as the shifter, not to mention how inserting the key turns on the ignition.

I wrote it once, but to make sure - I will write it again. This motorcycle is very rare even here in the country of origin - Czech Republic. "Rust-o-ration" would be really bad thing to do, this bike is phenomenal and it deserves way more then that - if you are selling restored piece with registration license here in Czech, it usually goes for 3000-4000 US dollars (converted from CZK). Please, you did quite a lot rustorations lately, so please do a really, really nice bike for once. Thank you and greetings from Czech :)

I had a CZ 175 in the mid seventies , great machine . I didn't realise they were so rare now . We had lots of dealers selling them in the UK up until the early 1990s when they seemed to fizzle out. You never see one now. The twins like this one were very rare as most CZs sold in the UK were 125 and 175 singles , they took over from the much loved BSA Bantom when BSA production stopped.

on most of the old JAWA motorcycles, the ignition is off when the key is pulled from the switch.its a Bosch ignition switch . when you put the key into the switch. it turns on the ignition. turning the switch only activates the lights and accessories.

The key is not a key per se - it is a Bosch key, so it means it has to be pulled out for killing electricity. The turning switch itself only changes headlights.

Mustie's got the upper hand on these "uTuber's challenges" to see if something will run or not. Mustie's got the mental schematic for motor's so perfected he does it in his sleep. He knows the mental flowchart backwards and forwards - If this occurs, these are the steps to resolution - When I watch I learn where I might find that "kink" from Mustie's reasoning to solve my own practical issue. Thanks again Mustie for letting me live vicariously through your solutions to keep my own property running. The shipping from Dallas, Texas would be outrageous - LOL!

When you first blew out the carb, a small washer flew out and landed behind the water bottle on your right. BTW I'm in MD and last snow was the first time I used my snow blower. It would go into reverse but not forward, Thanks to your videos I knew to check the axle spacers and added a couple of washers on the right side. Those plastic bushings or the plastic 2" spacers must wear down after a while. It worked fine last time I used it. Great video

I think we are referring to the same thing. The seal (not washer)for the bottom cap. He finds it after I made the comment. Watching the video again he did put the float cap on 180 degrees out @ 48.40 so the hole kisses the throat. I never would've thought about pulling the key out to turn it off.

I'm sitting here eating breakfast... watching you figure this bike out. I found myself wishing I had some popcorn, instead! The suspense was killing me. "When will he figure out it is the key?" When you started pushing the regulators and musing about disassembly I shouted "No, Tonto! Don't go in to town!" My roommate cracked up at that.
I have ridden with several people who had ignitions like this. But, they have gone the way of the Dodo. I think BMWs up through the late 70s is the most common you will find... the old Airheads.

45:15 Yes, that is a primer. It floods the chamber/throat of the carb for enriched starting... we call it the tickler for Amal carbs. I don't know what Jawa riders call it. It relieves the need for choke blacks that can malfunction!

Saw that washer blow out of the parts tin when you blew the carb out and said, oh boy - he’ll be lucky if he finds that. Of course you did - whew! Key pull to kill - interesting. So it’s a two stroke - ok.

I love your posts. I just picked up a Briggs and Stratton self propelled lawnmower left on the street for the scrap man. It had lower bars, spark plug and air filter missing. With in 30 minutes I got it working. Spent £11 for new carb gasket, spark plug and air filter, made my own lower bars out of more street scrap for trampoline frame. I changed the oil, cleaned, sharpen and balance blade and she starts first pull and cut my grass now. The problem was the run and cut off cable had stretched and did not disengage coursing the spark plug to not spark, couple of shims sorted that out :)

Dear mustie1: This key's nickname is "Zündnagel" (ignite nail)! Every older Bike, Truck or tractor in Europe including Eastern Europe and in parts of Asia etc.p.p. use these simple keys (or similar types). Put it in and push it down means ignition on normally. First notch (= slight turn) is parking light, 2. notch is driving light. Best regards.
P.S. I still want to mail informations about the best sealing material ever and another way to make metal look old than to use shoe polish. But I'm still not able to find your Email address in your utube channel informations as you mentioned (maybe because I only use a smartphone, have no computer?). And, last but not least, I lost a bunch of hair watching you treating Puch name and Bing bad. LOL ;-) I could have helped because nearly all of my former Mofa's/Moped's/Mokick's had Bing carburators. And, of course, there is a simple, common and cheap way to make every type and length of Bowden cables (or is it Bowden wires?) for gas, brakes or clutch at home/by yourself.

this type of bike has a typical defect: the seal on the crankshaft, which is located between the cylinders, below, fails. The engine starts producing more smoke from a cylinder, and going lean on the other. The lean cylinder will overheat and fail, killing the whole engine, if this fault is not serviced ASAP. Looks like it's the case here too. You'll need to dismantle the whole engine and crank to fix it.

The minute i saw the key I knew you had to pull out one click to deactivate the circuit. I purchased another Czech vehicle a Tatra 813 some years ago, the truck was a beast 8x8 all wheel drive 19L air cooled V12, it had the key with the bulb on the end. I killed a set of batteries (it was a 24v system) before I realized you had to pull the key out to shut off the power. Many German and some Czech vehicles of that age had those keys, Unimog’s, Magirus, and MAN trucks all seemed to have them. Don’t lose it very hard to find a replacement ! I have been impressed with Czech engineering, after all they did ‘design’ the VW Beetle before Ferdinand Porsche ran off with the design :-)

Must be quite a bit of cable drag to keep that valve from sliding down with the spring on it. Any time I'd ever had issues with valve stick was due to the the valve barrel having a bit of corrosion or bur on it.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 6 лет назад +1

there's a lot of cable on that one, with the oil pump system, the cable goes down to the pump first, then up to the carb. he needs a "cable luber" to force cleaner/lube through the cables and make sure the cam wheel on the oil pump moves freely. not all bikes have the same throttle cable layout of course.

For anyone who didn’t get his comment, he was making a Star Wars joke as it features characters known as Jawas, who are meter-tall humanoids completely hidden behind rough cloth robes. Now I wouldn’t be surprised if George Lucas had named the Jawa characters after the motorcycle brand, though I haven’t verified that. It seems very plausible though as they were well known motorcycle brand the in the 70’s.
As to the original Jawa brand that made the motorcycle shown in the video, it was a Czech (later Czechoslovakian) manufacturer started in 1929 and was at one time (especially in the 1950’s) one of the top motorcycle manufacturers. The also made cars for a period of time too. In 1990, due to the fall of the Soviet Union, the original company saw a major loss of manufacturing and not long after closed down. In 1997 a revived version of the company called Jawa Moto was opened in the Czech Republic. Jawas have a cult following in India and In 2018, a licensing deal allowed for a Indian Manufacturer called Ideal Jawa to make models specifically for the Indian market at an Indian factory.

it's like a time capsule full of little surprises. Makes me miss my 1966 Suzuki 150cc 2stroke. The key cylinder looks like it is mounted in a steel case on top of the forks, maybe you can remove the two bolts and it will come off so it can be cleaned and oiled. I would love to have that bike and yes, I would take my time and restore it.
