I love that Darren giggles every time an engine kicks over. I'll be he does that when his electric toothbrush starts up, too.
I said that years ago that he has this child like giggle that is infectious!
Absolutely spontaneous. Every time.
Absolutely spontaneous. Every time.
Absolutely spontaneous. Every time.
I just got this mental image of Darren giggling every time he starts his daily driver...
You need to take this out for a spin! I am sure I'm not the only one that wants to see it go!
Just so you know you are influencing the youth. My son just grabbed his toy leaf blower and said he was going to fix it like Mustie and set it down and said “hey guys and how’s it going.” Then proceeded to diagnose its problems. He’s 4 hahaha
It never fails to amaze me how people will spend thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars on a piece of machinery or a vehicle and then park it outside with absolutely no protection from the elements. Is putting a $8 tarp on it too expensive or to difficult to put on?
Build a 2x4 framed shelter and stretch to a $24 tarp to cover the whole thing and not abrade the paintwork???
at least that bike wasn't very expensive new.
actually, covering a bike in a tarp and leaving it for years will accelerate corrosion due to humidity being trapped in there. its better to keep it uncovered to let air around it. ideally it would be in a dry shed or garage, but that isnt always possible
Unless you build a cheap shed out of timbers and cover the shed frame with a cheap tarp????

"If it has a Saving Grace, let's try not to kill it right away."😄Book of Darren, verse 6:40....and a rubric for the whole of humanity. Thanks, Mustie, for letting us hang out in your shop.
Words to live by.
I think it was verse 4:20
Yet it is hackish to try and silicone an easily orderable carb kit for $13
I bought my HYOSUNG for $3500 baby spankin' brand new and the 250 engine had more than enough guts to keep up with 70mph traffic ; it ran great and I always got comments about how quiet it ran . The HYOSUNG is just a Korean made Suzuki
You always make it look so damn easy! Always using basic diagnostic skills! What many don’t realize is that your brain is an encyclopedia of that “basic” knowledge that the majority of people do not have. That is simply decades of experience. As always WELL DONE!
Basicly old school mechanic long before all these modern techniques
Hey Mustie! Young lad from the UK here, I had the 125cc version of this bike when I was 17 and its the exact same! Identical, even the engine parts and build. Got some fun advice for you if you continue work on this bike.
The intake manifolds are gold dust, make sure they dont crack.
Good luck getting that airbox out, you cant unless you drop the engine.
Stator is known for burning out, check the copper for black residue if you want to.
8 valves is a lot in a high revving 2 cyl so they need checking often.
Bike is pretty much unmodifiable, change exhaust, ruin airflow. Change air filter, ruin airflow. Change carb jets, ruin power.
Rear cyl known to get hotter than front, a fun way to reduce the build up of temp is to run carb to rear cyl slightly rich to cool cylinder.
The carbs may be built with soft screws and they mash really easily on purpose to stop tampering. Somehow you managed to get the bowls off with no issues. Maybe 17 year old me didnt know about JIS drivers haha.
Brings back some good memories, I loved my Hyosung. Great build quality and such a looker. I slash cut my exhausts and it sounded absolutely bonkers revving to 11,000.
I've been given one that's in really rough shape and I'm working on it currently trying to get it back on the road as a cheap runaround to have alongside my big bike.
The airbox rubbers are missing completely so unsure of how to go forward really - pod filters and a rejet maybe? I'm trying to spend as little as possible 😂
It's running currently, but really rough and inconsistent on idle. Do you know what the vacuum device is on the right hand side below the air filter cover by any chance?
You revved a Chinese V twin to 11000?😮 Braver than I...😅
@@willybones3890 No, it's South Korean, and we both know that there is a big difference! South Korea has proven that they can make good cars, trucks, and motorcycles in the last 20 years.
They will rev to 11000, but the valves start to float before 9000.
A Sunday morning staple of American RUclips! Thanks for the fun Mustie1!
This is the first time I have ever heard someone say I was not running when it was put away! Awesome content as always Darren
And there was no oil and he put oil in it. Honesty is always appreciated. Keeps you from going down rabbit holes unnecessarily.
Ran before it stopped! :D
my fav: "dropped by previous owner" ...yeah also by current owner...
The quad bike I had been hoping to get running again had a similar "it died so we left it there" story.
Unfortunately my skills are way lower than mustie's, so the only movement I've got out of it so far is pushing it around.
I just finished rebuilding a YZ125 that someone gave to me for free. It had the same story that it ran before it was stored and their son moved away so they no longer had use for it. Long story short, it only had 30lbs of compression! There’s a zero chance it was running. After a new top end rebuild and a lot of other attention, it’s running as good as new.
The startup giggles never get old! Thanks for the shop time Mustie1!
Manufactured by Harley Fong of China 😅😅
Ahhh...James Wong got involved too..it makes smoke for those getaways when your chased by the bad guy's 😅😅
I would cut off both sdes of the tank clean it out. Rewelded it
Or get a new tank?
On the oRing. Add a drop of super glue on the ends. Hold it together and its ready.
Thats how those oring kits are made. Plus the have a razor blade to cut the ends flush.
My old work place had kits. Seldom we had orings ready from the manufacturer available. The guys at the shop we real cool. Thats how i learned. 😊

I know the 650's they offered in the UK were Suzuki SV engines, so I'd take a good guess that the 250 is originally a Suzuki lump too. They have a pretty good reputation here if looked after. They also offered a 650 sports bike too, great value if you were on a budget.
Yes, they used to be fairly common here in Malta (Europe) also. Last Hyosung I've seen resembles a Yamaha TW. It wasn't in best shape - but a decent runner.
Incorrect. . The Hyosung 650 is its own animal that just looks similar to the Suzuki sv650 engine. The Hyosung gv650 and Gt650 engines don't share any parts with the Suzuki nor will the swap into a Suzuki frame. Same goes for the Suzuki 650 engine going into a Hyosung frame. The engine mounts on both are off by a mile to fit the different makers frame. Only thing that is close is both manufacturers rated specs for the 2 engines. I've had a Hyosung gv650 for 11 years and a sv650 for 5 years. Everything above goes for the gv250 engine. It just looks the part but it isn't a 1:1 clone and parts do not interchange.
My thoughts.......you have got to be the calmest, most patient, persistent man I've ever seen 👍. Smart too! 🖖
😂😂😂 "Maybe it identifies as a diesel." I almost spit out my mountain dew on that one. 😂😂😂
A Mustie1 gem right there.
Its amazing how they can pack so much into such a small space.
Yeah, and this isn't even a goldwing 😂
I would say put some bolts in the gas tank and shake it up for a while then rinse it out. Maybe put some gas tank sealant in it. I think the gas gage arm fell off and is in the bucket. The pine needles were around the cap when you flipped it over. It is not a bad looking bike. Adjust the lifters. You might get $700-800 for it. All the lights work and the horn and it is low mileage and runs good. If the tires are good and you can clean the tank then sell it... or keep it as a putting around bike. Got any nephews old enough to ride? I would just hate to see something that intact ripped apart.
with no title you wont get $200 for it, even if it runs like a top- Bikes with no title are worthless
The Right Stuff sealant has saved me o many occasions. I’ve done sealing jobs with that stuff that’s over 15 years old now and still not leaking. I’d recommend The Right Stuff sealant any time. Stuff is great.
Evaporust and a tank sealant/liner could possibly bring that tank back to life. You can't really tell what the tank condition is until it is cleaned out, so no guarantees on that, and I'm sure you know that. There is a clone of Evaporust that works, but it does take a bit longer using EDTA and Citric Acid.
I absolutely love Evaporust. The Handtool Rescue RUclips channel uses it extensively and it's quite entertaining.
Evaporust works great but its expensive. White or apple cider vinegar works great with a little care and patience. Tank lining is almost always short lived and the end of the tank when it fails. This tank could be good as new with a few gallons of white vinegar. Got to follow up with a rinse of bicarbonate of soda to neutralise the slight acidity.
@@davidclark7973 There is an alternative to Evaporust and I posted the video that proves it, but someone deleted the link on RUclips. It costs about a nickel on the dollar to make and I know it works because I made some. The liner is only as good as the person prepping the tank and after all, he said the MC isn't worth $500.00 but buying a new tank probably isn't worth it either. A few more years and the tank can be used. Search for EDTA and Evaporust on RUclips and you should be able to find the video for the clone version.
Any acid added to a liquid instantly makes it different than evaporust. It also makes it instantly destructive. Evaporust converts the rust but does not attack the metal. The acids attacks the metal no matter what.
@@videodistro No one said to leave it in any solution for weeks at a time. Sure any acid will etch metal if left without watching it.
In my mind I can picture the type of human that was out there at 2am cutting wires trying to Hotwire the bike 😂
A young scholar, partway through medical school and on his way to Bible study, obviously... And definitely not someone you'd expect to end up dying in a shootout with police while trying to steal a vehicle.... Oh wait.
I'd really like to see this one back on the road. Perhaps just sit it aside, dump some mild rust remover in the tank and give a shake every so often. We can watch you work all day long! Narragansett Bay
I agree. Mustie1, I haven’t seen you put a gas tank on a cars spinning rear wheel full of chemicals and nuts and bolts for a while. I realize it would take a few times, but it’s not like us viewers have anything better to do, and you’d have a working bike. Is that gas cap recessed so you can’t get all the gook out? Is it two tanks connected by a pipe or two underneath like a Harley, and those can be taken apart?
I’ve seen him strap a tank to his truck wheel and spin it like a rock tumbler with a box of nuts in it
hyosung builds realy good bikes, they started in the late 70´s with license builds of suzuki motorcycles, so they have a lot of experience. They are big in 125cc bikes, dont know about the US but you see them often in Europe and asia ofcourse. i owned a ST7 so the big fuel injected 700cc sister of the aquila, it was a nice beginner bike for me.

GOOD MORNIN' LAD
I love how the guy says "It shouldn't take much to get it running again." after leaving it sitting for 9 years because he couldn't get it running again.
I mean some people are just self aware of their lack of mechanical ability
"Ran the last time I rode it."
Other times you can just lose enthusiasm for something and the years slip by....
I think he was joking... He said it after saying he did terrible things to it.
I have a 92 vmax that ran like a top. I just parked it , it has been sitting like 6 yrs now. Needs carb rebuild , fuel flush, battery, and tires. Moved on to some sweet , efi vtwin muscle cruisers, and an R1. It happens.
I worked my way through college by working at my uncles gas station. Under the right conditions, the gas tanks in the ground can accumulate water in them. One of our customers came in because he had just filled up his tank at another gas station and it quit running and he coasted into our station. We tried everything, spark, fuel and could not get it to run. Then we smelled the fuel and it was water. When he filled up his tank at the other gas station it was nothing but water. I think that may possibly be what happened to this motorcycle.
Maybe the other gas station had a big hate on for your customer. (just a guess')
I had that happen to me back in the late 80’s with my ‘80 Rabbit. Filled up and went to the train station to go into NYC For the day with some friends. Came back and tried to start it and it just farted once and quit. Had to have it towed and the fuel filter ended up looked like it was full of hot chocolate.
My friend has a kick start shovelhead....she bought gas at a local station and we spent a couple hours later trying to get it to start....no joy until we drained the gas and put in premium gas from another station...then it fired right up.
Back in 1974 I went to tow a car that had quit on the road. When I got to the vehicle there was a second car stopped a way farther down the road. The driver walked back as I was hooking the first car up and said his car just quit. The drivers had just seen each other as the fueled up at a gas station just over a mile away. As we were talking, a third car coasted to a stop. That driver had filled up at the same gas station. I had come by that station and there was a tanker there filling the tanks. Either there was water in the gasoline being delivered or there was some water in the sump in the tank that got stirred up as the new fuel got dumped in. As I towed one car and pushed another back to the shop, we stopped at the station where they had filled up with unleaded gas to tell them there was a problem and they shut down the unleaded pumps. We later heard that there were at least 12 vehicles that had problems. We towed three, drained the tanks, changed the fuel filters, added Isopropyl Heet to the tanks and filled them with gasoline. The station that sold them the gas paid for it all.
That is a made up story, isn’t it…
Hi Mustie, Regarding the gas tank, I saw something that really impressed me. Country Boy Gas Garage cleaned out a bus gas tank with vinegar and shook it up over a week. It needed a vacuuming out. I was amazed how clean it got. Rust was 98% gone. God bless and take care from your long-time California subscriber.
Try acid wash hydrofluoric acid is the best, no stronger then a five on litmus) immediately, with glass marbles, and lye soap, (sodium hydroxide) as strong as 10-12 (upto 14 on the litmus paper, no need for this strength on tank cleaning).
You can get those piston rings and cylinders wet if you put the oil in then use your compressed air to blow it around.
I looked it up on the internet and they are still made with lots of parts available.
I was just on a website called Hyosung Wholesale. Tons of parts available for this bike.
Hyosung GV250 is a 249 cc cruiser motorcycle manufactured by Hyosung Motors & Machinery Inc. The motorcycle's 2010 version produces 28.5 hp (21.3 kW).[2]
The GV250 features the same electronic fuel injection (EFI) as the larger Hyosung GV650. Its 4-stroke, 4-valve, double overhead cam engine is air- and oil-cooled.
Well done Mustie1, I love that you also include the things that go wrong and not edit them out to appear perfect 👌
" If it bleeds we can kill it " Great Ahnold quote from the film, " Predator ".
I just heard Darren's life motto at 31:00; "they put it together, it's got to be able to come apart"! 🙂
You want to see the tank James Condon brought back to life, looked just like the inside of yours. Great video Mr Mustie. Happy new year.
I second that, he filled it with loose nuts & bolts and shook the hell, out of it, and countless filling and emptyings.. probably cheaper to get a new tank.. James tank was rectangular from a generator, easier to clean out than a teardrop motorcycle tank. I do think if you can find a clone tank that fits, its worth saving for a kids first motorcycle, on the cheap 👍
Mustie usually attaches it to a wheel and runs it for hours with the nuts/bilts in it vs “hand shake” method😉
Sounds like something that could be done with an old clothes dryer. Or, maybe with just an old barrel and some rollers and a motor and a long belt. Just put your nuts and bolts and cleaning fluid, plug all the holes tightly and strap the tank tightly to the inside of the dryer or drum and let it go round and round. Maybe check and change its orientation every so often.
if I recall correctly. and i rarely do, Hyosung bought the rights to i believe the suzuki VL engine out of the intruder. they poked/prodded tweaked etc and put it in the aquila and also their GT range (both the naked and the fully faired GT250R before giving it fuel injection on the later models/mk2s.
A lot of S.Korea and chinese manufacturers were doing this at the time (buying the rights to the smaller japanese stuff so they could pump out bikes en masse, for their domestic markets, to then branch out to europe, and II guess to a smaller extent, the US.
its a shame as everyone thats ridden/owned these bikes loves them. the GT250/Aquila (for the UK they also make 125cc versions too as our licencing laws prohibit learners from riding anything above 125cc/15.5hp, I passed my test nearly 20 years ago, i might be wrong)
If I recall your spot on, a buddy of mine had a SV650 and another bought the GT650 and the engines looked exactly the same. He ended up getting rid of the Hyosung a month or 2 later because it would randomly die while riding, it would fire right back up after coming to a stop but lose all electrical power randomly
I'm not 100% sure this engine is a vl250 clone but I know hyosung's 650s were direct dl650/sv650 clones.
@@Psycodiver69in Thailand the Hyosung is a 300. Same engine, same name Aquila, but different models. And still available!

I really enjoyed that one Mustie 👍 Tank has gotta be worth a clean out and putting it back on the road as a cheap commuter right? No? Maybe? 😁 go on! 🥳
When I had a rust inside my tank I filled it completely with white vinegar. Left it for 24+ hours and it came out like new. You have to use baking soda to neutralise it. I then added some oil to some gas to swish around to stop it flash rusting. Love your videos as always different 👌👌👌
vinigar and small rocks to loosen rust. It too me several flushings and weeks, but tank was saved. many u-tube videos onb saving tanks.
Ohhh that's where I went wrong I didn't know what to neutralize it with haha ended up flash rusting again
A guy who restored old Harleys used to sell a tank/rust sealer made just for this!
Actuall there are several acids that work better and faster then vinigar.
With the carburetor screw that was hard to break loose, some valve grinding compound on the tip gives a lot more grip and makes it come out much easier as long as you apply it before you totally ruin the drive head. I just love all your videos, especially the VW related ones. Thanks for the regular entertainment!

Been watching Mustie1 for quite some time now. These videos just resonate with my inner mechanic. Similar age with a mechanical and engineering background. I can't wait to see what the videos are going after next to fix. I just spent a week working on a bike of my own. Had similar fuel tank scum but I found a good fix for it. First rinsed out the fuel tank and then filled it with white vinegar and left it for a couple days to soak. Not perfect but I think it would do wonders for that fuel tank. As long as it is not leaking it has repair potential.
bit of vinegar is a good idea but all he really needs is several rinses with water, shake out as much as possible, then use some emulsifier like Sea Foam and splice in a filter. It might sputter a few times but it will end up going.
And he shouldn't part out an easily repaired bike. Keep it or flip it like that good enough, though seal the tank against future rain incursion.
It identifies itself as a diesel. Now that's funny. 🤣🤣🤣

Mustie1 and coffee Sunday morning is complete. On the bowl gasket issue I have a idea 💡 but don't know if it will work. O-ring gasket marker kit could allow you to make a new gasket. Glad she's not returning to use because should use chain wax not oil. Oil will cause dirt to stick to chain and cause issues ltr on. Great work getting her to run
Bravo! You are a real great master!
Thanks Mustie for another great video. 👍
Awesome and outstanding as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along
Because it sent its entire life sitting outside the tank filled up with water from the bad design of the filler. They probably made the filler recessed like that so any small dribbles when you filled it would stay and evaporate instead of running down the tank. Unfortunately when the seal failed it allowed the well when filled with water drain into the tank. I bet that's why it started running poorly and then quit running when the water clogged the carbs.
I'm really glad you are working on a full sized motorcycle again...I loved the videos with your old Yamaha back at the garage :)
Given how it runs well, I'd try to clean the tank and seal it and run it. Cycle Trader has these for about $2500.
Agreed. I did think Mustie's assessment on price was a bit low. As long as he can fix the tank/fuel issue, and tidy up the cosmetics, send it right out the door for at least $1000.
Thanks John for donating this to the Mustie community. I’m early on in the video, but this looks like it’ll be a fun one.

Try to save the motorcycle as is, there's no sense in making something else out of a bike that's already in top shape, that's my recommendation. If it ain't broke, don't fix it 🙂

Everytime I really really in joy a video from this channel, its a unfinished project, like the skid steer.
Tank is savable. The o ring has failed around the filler. People remove the rust using vinegar and aquarium gravel, screws, nuts and bolts to agitate the flakey rust. You can then line it with tank cote or any tank lining compound or just run it with a good filter if it doesn't leak.
Looks like a good bike. Engines designed by ex Suzuki engineers
Yea, tank isn't totaled, just need crap removed.
With the tank having a fuel level sensor, would it get damaged?
@robertheinkel6225 you would have to remove it. They are designed to be replaced so it wouldn't be an issue.
Great show!
The tank inside must not be that bad. Up is a splash plate that is made of poorer steel and Rost much faster.
All the water comes inside because the drain line from underneath the fuel cap is blocked. So all the water passes the upper sealing
Watching in the UK when I should be going to bed. 🤣Great work on working through the problems and love your joy at getting thinks running again 👍. It would be great to see a short format video on doing the tank and then cosmetically making the bike look as good as possible.

Hello, I've been watching you off and on for 9 years. You are a great mechanic and a man with great reasoning skills to figure things out. Onward and upward.
I had a Suzuki gift 600 that had a very similar tank set up . Somewhere on that ring where the filler cap fits is a tube that goes through the tank that allows any water to drain away through that tube. If that tube gets blocked it then rots away and the water drains in to the fuel. Took me ages to find that out.
Great content though really enjoy following your logic process, following the trail of clues etc.
Hyosung used some suzuki parts in their bikes. I believe their engines are a suzuki design. I considered opening a Hyosung dealership back in the day.
Must have been copied from the XJ6 and XJ12 car tanks (54 litres each side in the rear quarter panels.)
That small tube never coped with rainwater and blocked up far too easily...
I drained a litre of rainwater from each tank every 5 years....and ran twin CAV296 tractor filters with water bowl on the fuel lines...
“ Is it in the hole? Sometimes you gotta ask.”. Ha, ha ha ha ha ha ha.!!!
Another great video Darren
Another great video, nice little bike!
I am truly impressed with the motorcycle video. I guessed then verified that it's an Eagle. I was expecting the worst. Mustie 1 made a runner out of it. The rust on the spark plugs be the poor fuel water being burnt? I wasn't expecting the carb bowls relatively clean . A new tank and she's ready to go. Greetings from a snowy small airport in Iowa. By the way my last name in Czech means Falcon/Hawk ( close ).
Because the innards of the carb were clean but the tank above and the float bowls had rust it makes me think the water for in the tank from either rain or condensation...ran down the fuel line (water being more dense than fuel), collected in those bowls with the rust it brought down, then evaporated.
Aquila is the Italian word for "eagle" 🦅
Additionally it’s pronounced
(u-kee-Lu)
Great video Mustie I think that was the problem all the time as he said it died and problems starting water in the fuel
I know a guy that has one of those bikes they are dangerous because you can't get out of harms way because of being so slow he calls it a moped because it's a facade of a motorcycle. He claimed the motor and everything else was just made to resemble a real bike? Good video.
Nice find and troubleshooting Mustie 😊
Thanks for a great show today, it was fantastic. It's amazing how you found and fixed the worst carburetors and gas tank I've ever seen, just amazing. All you need now Is a new gas tank Wow; sure was fun watching. You're something else!
Goes to show not everything is as it seems. I was sure we were going to see seized and bound up parts from running out of oil, but it looks like it was mostly a case of water in the gas can. Machine runs well when it gets good fuel. I agree the power train would be better suited to a Mustie creation though. 👍
an aftermarket split tank from the Harley type could be persuaded to fit on there, and give the bike a new lease of life, they were indeed Cloned engines from Suzuki's custom bike range, the VL650 was a pretty popular Custom/cruiser here in the UK for a while, I think they have rebranded to Keywee or something like that these days.
The tank itself is quite probably savable, by filling it with a rust killer, then using a propitiatory sealing agent ( after removing the sender unit), and yes they had a habit of ingesting water via the tank filler cap screws as they didn't seal well, most guys here in the UK that own them fill the space on the rim with Silicon to stop the water getting in, 80% of the electrical problems were traced back to bad earthing, on most bikes, a common issue, remedied by cleaning and redoing the earth points, and filling all the connectors with Dielectric grease to avoid corrosion
Do you have proof they cloned a Suzuki engine? It also looks very similar to an early Honda and Kawasaki V twin
Hey Mustie1, Love the video,
Thanks for the Educationa Lessons on your Channel, My Grandson and I are looking at some old Lawn Mowers we picked up on the side of the road, we found the first issue with the first one and have got a new Gasket kit for the Carb, Keep up the Great work and Thanks. I really appreciate it.
Regards,
Gordon - Australia
Hey Mustie, I gotta tell ya. Been at home in bed with COVID. Been binge watching your channel the whole time. You got me through it!
Not a bad looking bike. Hope to see it operational
Clean old tank well but maybe add an inline filter if tank metal a bit funky to avoid future issues? That dry rust powder is crazy stuff! Was just thinking that perhaps that tank has a way of not sealing well and that surround fills with rain water and allows water into that tank? Treat with vinegar, clean and then treat with Ospho? Reline with Caswells tank cream or other?
Great video man. That explains the rust in the carb and spark plugs.
I missed you buddy have not seen you for a while good to see you have come back in my feed .
Mustie1, I’ve never seen rust so fine and powdery. Weird for sure! But you got it running even though the plugs were rusty. Be interesting to see what those cylinders and rings looked like (no do’t take it apart). It runs so put a tank on it and sell it. Hope your year started of good.
If there is such a thing as “pretty rust” we just saw it. Run a pressure washer wand in and around for twenty minutes with the tank upside down. Evaporust is a great product. Mustie is a frugal guy when it comes to fluids. I would try this next. I was a bit puzzled when he said that it’s ONLY a 500 dollar bike. All profit ! He would rather make a Frankenstein vehicle because it’s way more fun. So be it. Nuff said.
It's apparently a $2k to $2.5K bike in the USA....@@@billkurek5576
It will be interesting to see what Evapo-Rust would do to the inside of this fuel tank.
My 2010 Kazuma Jaguar Four Wheeler, it’s a Polaris clone, had a similar tank issue but it was remedied with a poor in liner.
The engine from this bike would be cool in a two or four seater dune buggy.
Great work as usual, nice looking bike too.😂
Finally another motorcycle on the channel, thank you!
