My father was tri-5 fan and in the 80's we gathered up everyone we could in a 200 mile radius. I thought we dug some complete crap out.. but nothing like this :) getting um rolling and riding and steering cars with no brakes with mice falling out of headliners, running up inside pant legs, yes it happened a few times. Bees nests, hornets nests. But the worst was jacking one up out of the dirt (like this one) and finding a family of skunks.. again happened more than once. I can't say i miss doing it, but I do miss doing stuff like that with my dad.

We did need a working water pump. Never forget to bring a couple quarts of 2 cycle oil. The brakes were kinda crunchy but held fluid and their seals weren't dead. Ended up being one of the nicest running 36 hp SAAB 850's I've driven, except the exhaust pipe was coked badly and kinda killed performance climbing hills.

These are not "dealer miles" so we're talking a few hundred a year and 5-10k showing on the clock, decades later. There's a guy locally who has the original tires and window sticker on his 65 Mustang. That's a trailer queen for the most part. He's got another set of tires to drive on. Everything under the hood is OEM, except the battery. I'm amazed the belts and hoses haven't turned to dust yet. Obviously, garaged and kept clean with sweat equity.

@@redrider7730 Still not a horrible deal when considering that many people just put money into a low yield savings account.... and barely make the inflation rate. in 1961 there were no IRAs and stock market stuff was not a thing for the common man. Circa 1970 when I was in high school, I could have bought these things for $100 each... long before they were rusted to death. Of course, none of us had the forethought to fill up grandpa's barn with them for the future.

A fun time for you and Jason, I wonder how many enthusiasts cried out in mortal terror when you cut into that body, or the door mounts, I was thinking the doors could've been removed with wrenches, but I haven't done any work on any VW busses. It was nice to see the project backhoe being used, I'm sure you get satisfaction every time you use it. 🙂

The door retaining bolts are the single most challenging fasteners on any VW bus. : l
Well except maybe the engine door hinge bolts.

hey Mustie, first off AMAZING FIND! sad to see a 23 in that shape but at least you had the chance to get it out and got the church key!!! what a score!!! second, with the tractor spinning on the soft ground, one thing ive learned living way up by canada in maine is carry loading ramps for atv's in the bed of the truck, if you get spinning like that toss the in the ruts and the pull onto them itll give you traction and stop you from sinking further unless the ground is soup haha hope that helps on the next recovery! love your videos keep them coming, i hope one day i get to meet you in person one of these days! maybe ill even be in my 83 westy im bringing back to life again.
