How many of us are sitting here watching Darren adjust the valves with the timing chain adjust right there screaming "ADJUST ME!!!" ? In my short experience, a timing chain adjustment can have more effect and provide more satisfaction than valve adjustments ever do.

20 years ago I would sit down at and watch CBS Sunday Morning while drinking coffee. I no longer watch that program and Saturday nights I go to sleep hoping a Mustie1 video is loaded for Sunday morning. A new tradition which I enjoy a whole lot more. Darren you have more than a mechanical gift. To draw us in in the way you do is very rare. I hope you get as much enjoyment making the videos as I do watching them.
When I was a young teen back in the '50s I bought a used Zundapp motorbike. Among several problems, the one that concerned me the most was the rear tire was worn right down to exposed cords. Not having the money for new tires, I had the idea to coat the cords with some type of glue in order to keep the cords from rotting or being abraded any further. My parents had a small bottle of contact cement, so I used that, applying several coats. I rode that motorbike daily for several years and that cement held up just fine. Recently a neighbor asked me if I could patch a tubeless golf cart tire that had three holes in it. I first tried regular tire plugs but the golf cart tire carcass was too thin for the plugs to work successfully. I had some old car tire tubes that I figured I could cut to make patches for the inside of the tire. Remembering my success with using contact cement to bond to the rubber tires of my old motorbike, I applied a generous coating to the innertube patch, as well as the inside of the cart tire, applied the patch, then added another coat of cement over the whole patch area. Remounted the tire, aired it up and voila, no leak, even a year later! Contact cement to the rescue once again!👍
Hey Mustie; If that quad has a "Parking Brake" on the left hand brake handle (like my Yamaha Warrior has) those things are notorious for sticking, and not letting the engine rev when the brake is released. There is supposed to be a way to defeat that, but I got mine working okay, so I never looked further into it.
I was remembering about setting the glue on fire seconds before you said it. Fond memories of the local garage and mechanics who took the time to help out us kids.
So, I had the same problem and my solution was the fuel line was full of gunk and it wasnt sucking enough Fuel to go gull trothel. And the last couple seconds you said there was nothing wrong with it your right, But because it was standing so long without being started the Fuel got to the carburator but I am sure if u raved it for a little longer it would turn off..... Them carb screws usually get ruined when people don’t use the proper JIS screwdriver, I’ve found the best way to get over the problem is to use a pin punch and hammer the cross slot closed then tap the correct screwdriver in the head of the screw to reshape the slot, the driver then fits tight plus the tapping usually loosens the screw.
When we were kids we had a tire patch kit with a clamp that held the patch in place and it had chemical coating that was lit 🔥. It would flare like gun powder then go out to create vulcanization of the rubber. It made for a great repair. Probably not eco or health friendly so the kit may not available any longer. Flex seal works great for that low pressure sidewall cracking. A buddy of mine made his own whitewalls too with it. sticks great to rubber. and would seal that right up.
Funny that there was a starter relay in the storage box. As a parts guy, I sold so many of those to people who were hearing a clicking or buzzing sound from that part, only to come back 2 days later needing a new battery. If they asked for my help, I'd tell them it's because the voltage was dropping too much when the starter motor engaged, and it was just a weak battery. But if they wanted to be a know it all, I'd be happy to sell them exactly what they asked for. XD Our shop ran a pretty good business cleaning those carbs after everything switched to ethanol fuel, but tbh I don't miss it. Fuel injection ftw. Most common repairs on those ATVs was carb clean, CV axles / boots (axle guards are a good accessory to have), wheel bearings, and CVT pulleys. Tip: If you ever get water in the belt cavity and the transmission starts slipping - STOP! Don't continue to drive it or you'll wear a groove in the pulley, and that's a much bigger job than a simple belt replacement. Those OEM belts really don't break or wear much, since the transmission includes a centrifugal clutch. But the water can wash the grease off the rollers in the clutch and make the pulleys slippery. You have to pull the drain plug, take the cover off, and wash the grease off the pulleys. Might not hurt to carry a can of brake cleaner with you if your route includes any creeks. It does have that snorkel to offer a certain level of water ingress protection, but just remember, it's an all TERRAIN vehicle, not a submarine. I love those '00 -'09 era Kodiaks though, it's a solid machine if you take care of it. I can see this one is in good hands. Also be aware that Yamaha puts their exploded parts diagrams online, if you need to find where that little o-ring that pops out of your carburetor goes. yamaha-motor (dot) com/parts

Hey Mustie, Next time you do an oil change where you will get drenched by removing the drain plug, hook up a shop vac to the oil fill port while removing the drain plug. No oil will spill until you remove the vacuum. You also don't have to go "fishing" for the plug in the drain pan! Love your videos!
Another great video Mustie. To save moving the winch lower and getting it in the mud,water , etc, weld a pulley or sheave down low and run the cable through it. And then you can run the cable up high for the plow or low if needed to winch the machine out when stuck. Always look forward your video's on Sunday morning.

I had a Polaris Trail Boss that did the same thing. Drove me mad. Was sitting on it one day and looked at the top of the throttle, saw something about safety in reverse. Took the top cover off and sure enough, it was all corroded in there. Cleaned it up and problem solved. A friend of mine had the same problem later on his and it was the same problem, except he had it easy since I had figured it out on mine. Good stuff Mustie! Thanks for your videos!
So that may mean that when he steam cleaned the Kodiak outside and also tipped it on it's side, he may have inadvertently 'fixed' the problem, until he reversed it off the truck. Ha ha. Hate that when that happens. Looking forward to part 2 to confirm your experience.

New stuff got so ridiculously cheap that it takes quite a bit of dedication to actually fix something instead of replacing it, especially having it fixed by someone else who needs to live on what people pay for repairs. Back when you had to spend several months' or even years' salaries on something you were forced to think twice about replacing something.
When I worked in a tire shop I always used to take a heat gun to the area inside the tire before and after applying the patch. It really seemed, to me at least, aid in getting the best adhesion possible.
I had an eighties model Virago -750 that had been taken over by Gremlins. The carbs were constantly giving me trouble and even the Yamaha dealer couldn’t figure it out. I unloaded that piece of (expletive deleted) as fast as I could. Good luck with that younger cousin you have there!
Bought a 2000 Kodiak in December of 1999. Still drives very good. Changed starter sell solenoid twice. Not much else work done to it. Plow snow with it. And hall wood with it. If it doesn’t start. Change spark plug, and it starts. Change oil, once a year. Musty, there is a oil drain bolt that is easer than the one with the screen. Maybe i should check mine with the screen. Been a while. But I’m 270 pounds. And this wheeler moves me around fine. Wheeler’s have gotten so big with high cc numbers. Not to mention the price of side by sides. I like a wheeler that can fit threw the trees. In my type of woods. Always have used good gas. And ethanol free gas now. And have never had to adjust the carb. Always covered with a tarp. And now garaged. If you find one, snatch it up as Scotty Kilmer would say, you won’t be disappointed. Think this will last me the rest of my life. Thanks Musty for what you do. Can’t wait for the next vid man.
I was all too familiar with this one cause I had to rebuilt the carb in my grizzly last year. problem actually turned out to be the intake manifold seal which I was glad I decided to check while I was in there. edit, just got to the end of the video and its still doing the same thing mine was. you might want to check that intake manifold gasket. mine came from the factory kinked and after so long started leaking.
Long time watcher but first comment. This is in my wheel house. I buy and fix up atvs to sell all the time. I have fixed 3 of these kodiak atvs, same years. The main cause of people abandoning them are because they replace the factory carb with an amazon special. I cant count how many expensive used factory carbs I have had to track down to get these things running. I even tried putting factory jets into the amazon special carbs with zero luck. So my recommendation to any one rebuilding these carbs is to get one of those sonic cleaners. I always tell anyone buying an atv from me to use ethonal free gas at the end of the season. Not sure if they listen but I have not had a call for a carb I have rebuilt yet.
hey mate, just a suggestion buy a strainer that you put loose leaf black tea in a tea pot to hold your small carb parts together in the cleaner! it's good to see the time i tried to remove an atv tyre off the bead by hand it wasn't all my fault it was so hard!
I been saying this for years now, like 3 or 4 years ago he did a custom engine powered bike after ir was done he took it for a spin, he looked exactly like doc brown in part 2 riding the bike outside the garage marty was trapped in, but ever since that video everytime i see him, i see doc lololol😂😂

Hey Darren, was watching you use that crappy plastic welding tool on this four wheeler. I ordered one of those machines from the company that invented the idea, it works great. After I clip all the prongs off, I use a plastic welder I bought from Matcotools and now I skip the welding tool and just use my seller soldering gun and just melt plastic like your using a wire welder. Works great. Let me know if you like the idea. Keep on restoring brother.
Tried watching when you first posted but my grandsons woke up , now they found something on tv. When you were doing the tire that would have been the time to do the flex seal on the inside.
Those tire patches usually require a primer to be brushed onto the surface of the tire after buffing it and before applying the patch. I think it is specific to tire patches, but it looked and smelled very much like rubber cement. The roller to apply them is also much more narrow with some shallow serrations to really apply pressure to the patch and squish it into the hole/crack.
I remember right you use that serrated wheel to knead the plastic covering on that patch until the plastic falls off or is all discolored so that you know all the places that you hit. I think that was the primary purpose of the serrations. (I don't know what happened to this message but this is the second time I had to enter it in here)
Coffee and wrenching on Sunday mornings! Gotta love it! I remember using those vulcanizing patches when I was a kid. Dad had one of those kits when I was a kid. Patches came on a metal cup with come flammable stuff in it and a clamp to hold it tight. Sure did do a great job on inner tubes!

I had a Honda rancher 350 that had this exact behavior. Turned out to be water in the gas but I couldn’t figure out how water was getting in it. Drove me crazy for months. Turns out the steering stem was full of water and the fuel cap vent hose was sucking water out of there! I had to drill a drain hole at the base of the steering stem and all that water ran out. Been great ever since. It was a weird issue for sure.
Was that a 2am in the morning 'Eureka' moment? Like my friend with an old style car. Always started on the first crank, but not until the battery had run down after a minute. After a few years he finally realised what it was. Who-ever replaced the starter motor, had put one in with too higher crank speed. The speed put the timing out, until the battery ran down and it turned more slowly, which matched the engine timing. Sigh! Other peoples induced faults.

That 4 wheeler is in amazing shape for it's age. On most farms and ranches a 4 wheeler is the most abused piece of equipment on the place, especially if there are young semi-supervised teens around.
On my Honda Big Ben the coil or Magneto was bad when it would warm up or run for too long it wouldn't have the pick up like it did when cold.. my friend he races 4wheelers told me to replace the magneto and it runs great 10 yrs later. If this had an hour gauge it would say damn long. Been watching your channel for a long time love all your vids. Fan for life
Still own a 2002 Honda Foreman that is very similar. Had carb issues a few years ago so I eventually swapped it out with a clone. Runs like a champ even after all these years. Always a pleasure to watch you work on old stuff! Thanks for the content.
Bob Smith Industries (BSI) has a rubber CA glue that contains rubber, and if you squeeze a small amount into small holes, cracks and so on, then spray the accelerator it will bond instantly and seal the small holes, or you can even glue a wheel nub back on. It works really well, especially for a trail fix. It is a chemical bond reaction between the glue and the connecting rubber pieces and almost vulcanizing the rubber together.
Great video, as per usual:). I was watching another youtuber that was using 3m scotch weld 😂pr40 plastic and rubber super glue to fix rubber tires. I used it to repair about 5-10 cracks per tire on 2 Honda fourtrax tires. Glue is amazing; been 3 months and the cracks are still totally sealed and don't leak at all. Cleaned the cracks with acetone first and got the glue into the cracks and held them shut for 60 seconds or so; then taped them shut for 12 h or so.
I just sold a 2001 Kodiak 400 4x4 this past spring. It was a farm workhorse before I owned it. Solid machines that just don’t die. Cheap money for the capability it has.
Came from "Steve's Small Engine repair" several years ago. Best part is you dump them out on the work bench, no fishing or hunting around where you might drop them.
I have a 1987 big bear the first four stroke quad Yamaha made. The thing had been rode hard and put away wet ever since I bought it new and it's been bullet proof. Except for a few torn CV joint boots and lots of flat tires.
I’ve owned TONS of atvs one trick that’s works 99% of the time when this happens is to just put your hand over the air intake were the filter is and rev it, it will create a suction and try to cut off and gas will get on your hand, but it will dislodge anything stuck in the carb thats making it run bad, works the best if you have a little water in the carb if you sunk it or somthing. The issue that you are having does sound like more of a problem with the reverse override however. Kodiaks are pretty good atvs I owned two of them and they were good units
I love this channel and his resourcefulness 👍🏼 …. But when it comes to tires dry rotted please spend the money for new ones 😂especially if you are gonna take the busted one off… don’t cut to many corners…
Great Video - I had a 2004 Yamaha 450 Kodiak. I gave it to a nephew and bought a new 2018 700 EPS Kodiak. Mustie - do your poor, long suffering, wife a favor and get her a wheeler with PS. I really like the wheeler videos. What's wrong? My guess it's the locker. There's some kind of rev limiter on my Yamaha's (old and new) that won't allow the engine to wind up when the locker is engaged. I think it's to limit torque to the drive axles so things don't break. Either the locker was engaged or the rev limiter didn't disengage when the electric locker was turned off.

Nice video as always!! Just a little tip for cleaning small parts in the ultrasonic cleaner: just put them inside of a glass jar filled with cleaning solution and then put the jar in the cleaner, works like a charm.
Back in the day I was a foreman at a plastics extrusion factory. The maintenance man and I rigged a small basket and lined it with metal window screen. Had to replace the screen periodically but it worked well for small parts, nuts, bolts, etc.
A tea bag holder works good too. Opens up like a clam shell and has a clip that holds it closed. Also, if you don't have a jar you can use a 1lb metal coffee can.
Tight exhaust valves don't burn because a lack of sealing. They burn because the valve depends on contact with the seat and Head to dissipate the heat that's in it. If the valve does not make contact with the valve seat it never has the opportunity to dissipate the heat into the rest of the head and that will end up overheating the valve.
@@David-yo5ws I don't think this is actually true. In my research on this subject I found that tapping the anvil originally came from keeping rhythm when multiple people were forging at the same time. The taps on the anvil were used as a means of keeping pace and as a means of communication. These days it's more of a tradition / way too give the blacksmith a moment to think. I don't think it has anything to do with keeping the hammer cool.

I had the exact issue with my 2004 Suzuki Eiger 400. During the PITA surgery to get to the carb, I also had to remove the black vacuum line that kind of hangs out in the middle of nowhere off the carb. In removing it, I noticed dust coming out. Well, a mud wasp took up residence. Long story short, I cleaned out the line, and problem solved. Might save someone a TON of work.
Those ATV tires commonly get cracks in the sidewalls from flexing so much because they run at such low pressures. Back in the 1970's with three wheelers we would just put tubes in. the bad thing about putting oil or Green Slime in to seal the tire is when you eventually do have to change the tire you have a big mess to cleanup just like those old Fix A Flat for cars leave a mess for the next guy.

Probably the best way to describe a CVT. 10 spd bike. Small front sprocket with large in back to get rolling. As speed progresses. Large front, small rear increased.
I agree with your diagnosis. I had a Polaris Slingshot that went into limp mode because the reverse camera shorted to ground. I unplugged and replaced the camera and problem solved.
Tip for the future Mustie...these yamaha's have 2 drains on the bottom of the engine. There's one towards the very back of the engine, that's the oil drain. Drain it from there first then pull the oil screen cap off. Won't be so much oil all the sudden that way and less mess. I've had a few yamahas. Currently have a 2007 grizzly 450 and they haven't changed anything but the cylinder size.

It would flare like gun powder then go out to create vulcanization of the rubber. It made for a great repair. Probably not eco or health friendly so the kit may not available any longer. Flex seal works great for that low pressure sidewall cracking. A buddy of mine made his own whitewalls too with it. sticks great to rubber. and would seal that right up.

Funny that there was a starter relay in the storage box. As a parts guy, I sold so many of those to people who were hearing a clicking or buzzing sound from that part, only to come back 2 days later needing a new battery. If they asked for my help, I'd tell them it's because the voltage was dropping too much when the starter motor engaged, and it was just a weak battery. But if they wanted to be a know it all, I'd be happy to sell them exactly what they asked for. XD Our shop ran a pretty good business cleaning those carbs after everything switched to ethanol fuel, but tbh I don't miss it. Fuel injection ftw. Most common repairs on those ATVs was carb clean, CV axles / boots (axle guards are a good accessory to have), wheel bearings, and CVT pulleys. Tip: If you ever get water in the belt cavity and the transmission starts slipping - STOP! Don't continue to drive it or you'll wear a groove in the pulley, and that's a much bigger job than a simple belt replacement. Those OEM belts really don't break or wear much, since the transmission includes a centrifugal clutch. But the water can wash the grease off the rollers in the clutch and make the pulleys slippery. You have to pull the drain plug, take the cover off, and wash the grease off the pulleys. Might not hurt to carry a can of brake cleaner with you if your route includes any creeks. It does have that snorkel to offer a certain level of water ingress protection, but just remember, it's an all TERRAIN vehicle, not a submarine. I love those '00 -'09 era Kodiaks though, it's a solid machine if you take care of it. I can see this one is in good hands. Also be aware that Yamaha puts their exploded parts diagrams online, if you need to find where that little o-ring that pops out of your carburetor goes. yamaha-motor (dot) com/parts

Next time you do an oil change where you will get drenched by removing the drain plug, hook up a shop vac to the oil fill port while removing the drain plug. No oil will spill until you remove the vacuum. You also don't have to go "fishing" for the plug in the drain pan! Love your videos!

Another great video Mustie. To save moving the winch lower and getting it in the mud,water , etc, weld a pulley or sheave down low and run the cable through it. And then you can run the cable up high for the plow or low if needed to winch the machine out when stuck. Always look forward your video's on Sunday morning.

I had a Polaris Trail Boss that did the same thing. Drove me mad. Was sitting on it one day and looked at the top of the throttle, saw something about safety in reverse. Took the top cover off and sure enough, it was all corroded in there. Cleaned it up and problem solved. A friend of mine had the same problem later on his and it was the same problem, except he had it easy since I had figured it out on mine. Good stuff Mustie! Thanks for your videos!
So that may mean that when he steam cleaned the Kodiak outside and also tipped it on it's side, he may have inadvertently 'fixed' the problem, until he reversed it off the truck. Ha ha. Hate that when that happens. Looking forward to part 2 to confirm your experience.

New stuff got so ridiculously cheap that it takes quite a bit of dedication to actually fix something instead of replacing it, especially having it fixed by someone else who needs to live on what people pay for repairs. Back when you had to spend several months' or even years' salaries on something you were forced to think twice about replacing something.

When I worked in a tire shop I always used to take a heat gun to the area inside the tire before and after applying the patch. It really seemed, to me at least, aid in getting the best adhesion possible.

I had an eighties model Virago -750 that had been taken over by Gremlins. The carbs were constantly giving me trouble and even the Yamaha dealer couldn’t figure it out. I unloaded that piece of (expletive deleted) as fast as I could. Good luck with that younger cousin you have there!
Bought a 2000 Kodiak in December of 1999. Still drives very good. Changed starter sell solenoid twice. Not much else work done to it. Plow snow with it. And hall wood with it. If it doesn’t start. Change spark plug, and it starts. Change oil, once a year. Musty, there is a oil drain bolt that is easer than the one with the screen. Maybe i should check mine with the screen. Been a while. But I’m 270 pounds. And this wheeler moves me around fine. Wheeler’s have gotten so big with high cc numbers. Not to mention the price of side by sides. I like a wheeler that can fit threw the trees. In my type of woods. Always have used good gas. And ethanol free gas now. And have never had to adjust the carb. Always covered with a tarp. And now garaged. If you find one, snatch it up as Scotty Kilmer would say, you won’t be disappointed. Think this will last me the rest of my life. Thanks Musty for what you do. Can’t wait for the next vid man.
I switched my 03 Kodiak over to a cheap lawnmower starter solenoid. Stock aftermarket ones just didn’t last for me. Got tired of replacing them….

I was all too familiar with this one cause I had to rebuilt the carb in my grizzly last year. problem actually turned out to be the intake manifold seal which I was glad I decided to check while I was in there. edit, just got to the end of the video and its still doing the same thing mine was. you might want to check that intake manifold gasket. mine came from the factory kinked and after so long started leaking.
Long time watcher but first comment. This is in my wheel house. I buy and fix up atvs to sell all the time. I have fixed 3 of these kodiak atvs, same years. The main cause of people abandoning them are because they replace the factory carb with an amazon special. I cant count how many expensive used factory carbs I have had to track down to get these things running. I even tried putting factory jets into the amazon special carbs with zero luck. So my recommendation to any one rebuilding these carbs is to get one of those sonic cleaners. I always tell anyone buying an atv from me to use ethonal free gas at the end of the season. Not sure if they listen but I have not had a call for a carb I have rebuilt yet.
hey mate, just a suggestion buy a strainer that you put loose leaf black tea in a tea pot to hold your small carb parts together in the cleaner! it's good to see the time i tried to remove an atv tyre off the bead by hand it wasn't all my fault it was so hard!

Hey Darren, was watching you use that crappy plastic welding tool on this four wheeler. I ordered one of those machines from the company that invented the idea, it works great. After I clip all the prongs off, I use a plastic welder I bought from Matcotools and now I skip the welding tool and just use my seller soldering gun and just melt plastic like your using a wire welder. Works great. Let me know if you like the idea. Keep on restoring brother.

Needs the throttle linkage adjust.
Thinks throttle is stuck and kills spark.
Those tire patches usually require a primer to be brushed onto the surface of the tire after buffing it and before applying the patch. I think it is specific to tire patches, but it looked and smelled very much like rubber cement. The roller to apply them is also much more narrow with some shallow serrations to really apply pressure to the patch and squish it into the hole/crack.

I remember right you use that serrated wheel to knead the plastic covering on that patch until the plastic falls off or is all discolored so that you know all the places that you hit. I think that was the primary purpose of the serrations. (I don't know what happened to this message but this is the second time I had to enter it in here)

I remember using those vulcanizing patches when I was a kid. Dad had one of those kits when I was a kid. Patches came on a metal cup with come flammable stuff in it and a clamp to hold it tight. Sure did do a great job on inner tubes!

I had a Honda rancher 350 that had this exact behavior. Turned out to be water in the gas but I couldn’t figure out how water was getting in it. Drove me crazy for months. Turns out the steering stem was full of water and the fuel cap vent hose was sucking water out of there! I had to drill a drain hole at the base of the steering stem and all that water ran out. Been great ever since. It was a weird issue for sure.
Was that a 2am in the morning 'Eureka' moment? Like my friend with an old style car. Always started on the first crank, but not until the battery had run down after a minute. After a few years he finally realised what it was. Who-ever replaced the starter motor, had put one in with too higher crank speed. The speed put the timing out, until the battery ran down and it turned more slowly, which matched the engine timing. Sigh! Other peoples induced faults.
My favorite thing about Sundays is not going to work.

That 4 wheeler is in amazing shape for it's age. On most farms and ranches a 4 wheeler is the most abused piece of equipment on the place, especially if there are young semi-supervised teens around.
Automatic transmission fluid works good in the tire too. It has additives that are for keeping seals from drying up.
On my Honda Big Ben the coil or Magneto was bad when it would warm up or run for too long it wouldn't have the pick up like it did when cold.. my friend he races 4wheelers told me to replace the magneto and it runs great 10 yrs later. If this had an hour gauge it would say damn long. Been watching your channel for a long time love all your vids. Fan for life

Still own a 2002 Honda Foreman that is very similar. Had carb issues a few years ago so I eventually swapped it out with a clone. Runs like a champ even after all these years. Always a pleasure to watch you work on old stuff! Thanks for the content.

Bob Smith Industries (BSI) has a rubber CA glue that contains rubber, and if you squeeze a small amount into small holes, cracks and so on, then spray the accelerator it will bond instantly and seal the small holes, or you can even glue a wheel nub back on. It works really well, especially for a trail fix. It is a chemical bond reaction between the glue and the connecting rubber pieces and almost vulcanizing the rubber together.

Great video, as per usual:). I was watching another youtuber that was using 3m scotch weld 😂pr40 plastic and rubber super glue to fix rubber tires. I used it to repair about 5-10 cracks per tire on 2 Honda fourtrax tires. Glue is amazing; been 3 months and the cracks are still totally sealed and don't leak at all. Cleaned the cracks with acetone first and got the glue into the cracks and held them shut for 60 seconds or so; then taped them shut for 12 h or so.
I just sold a 2001 Kodiak 400 4x4 this past spring. It was a farm workhorse before I owned it. Solid machines that just don’t die. Cheap money for the capability it has.

Came from "Steve's Small Engine repair" several years ago. Best part is you dump them out on the work bench, no fishing or hunting around where you might drop them.
Quick tip: you can get "balls" made from stainless steel screen to put tiny carb parts in a bath. They are sold for brewing loose leaf tea.
I have a 1987 big bear the first four stroke quad Yamaha made. The thing had been rode hard and put away wet ever since I bought it new and it's been bullet proof. Except for a few torn CV joint boots and lots of flat tires.
I’ve owned TONS of atvs one trick that’s works 99% of the time when this happens is to just put your hand over the air intake were the filter is and rev it, it will create a suction and try to cut off and gas will get on your hand, but it will dislodge anything stuck in the carb thats making it run bad, works the best if you have a little water in the carb if you sunk it or somthing. The issue that you are having does sound like more of a problem with the reverse override however. Kodiaks are pretty good atvs I owned two of them and they were good units

Great Video - I had a 2004 Yamaha 450 Kodiak. I gave it to a nephew and bought a new 2018 700 EPS Kodiak. Mustie - do your poor, long suffering, wife a favor and get her a wheeler with PS. I really like the wheeler videos. What's wrong? My guess it's the locker. There's some kind of rev limiter on my Yamaha's (old and new) that won't allow the engine to wind up when the locker is engaged. I think it's to limit torque to the drive axles so things don't break. Either the locker was engaged or the rev limiter didn't disengage when the electric locker was turned off.

Nice video as always!! Just a little tip for cleaning small parts in the ultrasonic cleaner: just put them inside of a glass jar filled with cleaning solution and then put the jar in the cleaner, works like a charm.
Back in the day I was a foreman at a plastics extrusion factory. The maintenance man and I rigged a small basket and lined it with metal window screen. Had to replace the screen periodically but it worked well for small parts, nuts, bolts, etc.
A tea bag holder works good too. Opens up like a clam shell and has a clip that holds it closed. Also, if you don't have a jar you can use a 1lb metal coffee can.
Tight exhaust valves don't burn because a lack of sealing. They burn because the valve depends on contact with the seat and Head to dissipate the heat that's in it. If the valve does not make contact with the valve seat it never has the opportunity to dissipate the heat into the rest of the head and that will end up overheating the valve.
Like the Blacksmith who hits the hammer on the anvil after a couple of hits on the hot metal: stops the hammer head getting too hot.
@@David-yo5ws I don't think this is actually true. In my research on this subject I found that tapping the anvil originally came from keeping rhythm when multiple people were forging at the same time. The taps on the anvil were used as a means of keeping pace and as a means of communication. These days it's more of a tradition / way too give the blacksmith a moment to think. I don't think it has anything to do with keeping the hammer cool.

I had the exact issue with my 2004 Suzuki Eiger 400. During the PITA surgery to get to the carb, I also had to remove the black vacuum line that kind of hangs out in the middle of nowhere off the carb. In removing it, I noticed dust coming out. Well, a mud wasp took up residence. Long story short, I cleaned out the line, and problem solved. Might save someone a TON of work.

Those ATV tires commonly get cracks in the sidewalls from flexing so much because they run at such low pressures. Back in the 1970's with three wheelers we would just put tubes in. the bad thing about putting oil or Green Slime in to seal the tire is when you eventually do have to change the tire you have a big mess to cleanup just like those old Fix A Flat for cars leave a mess for the next guy.

Probably the best way to describe a CVT. 10 spd bike. Small front sprocket with large in back to get rolling. As speed progresses. Large front, small rear increased.

I agree with your diagnosis. I had a Polaris Slingshot that went into limp mode because the reverse camera shorted to ground. I unplugged and replaced the camera and problem solved.
Tip for the future Mustie...these yamaha's have 2 drains on the bottom of the engine. There's one towards the very back of the engine, that's the oil drain. Drain it from there first then pull the oil screen cap off. Won't be so much oil all the sudden that way and less mess. I've had a few yamahas. Currently have a 2007 grizzly 450 and they haven't changed anything but the cylinder size.
