Busted Bobcat Diesel Side by Side, Can It Be Saved

- I bought this kubota diesel powered bobcat side by side that had failed to run and was parked for many years. the nice things are enclosed cab, front mounted plow, bucket, and forks, and the bad well let's just say it needs some love for sure.
Thank you Mustie1 for not changing your formula. It worked when you first started and it still does. It's a fresh breath of air in the overwhelming sea of crap that RUclips has evolved to. ❤️
Gotta shake your hand on that statement.
10,000%. Well said.
It was a breath of fresh air until he revealed what was in the back!😂
@@kenwolf1056 😂
Sea of crap was in the back of the vehicle
My 11 year old grandson yelled YES! when it first sputtered a bit. Then came the cheer when it started! Love watching your videos, but it's even better watching with him here.
The shrimp and the ice cream would have been my red flag. You made the sellers day, for sure.
I also thought the same 😄
😅😅😅
Recompense for selling Mustie a side x side full of dog crap!
40 years ago I worked for an underground contractor. I said the skid loader needed gas. That was the last time I made that grand indiscretion. 1 raging alcoholic, one Korean War Vet and a random sociopath that could figure out the right end of a number two shovel. They Screamed at me for 5 minutes. I miss those guys. I learned how to drink, sweat, snap back and make grown men cry from those old boys. I dropped the drinking but maintained and honed the other skills. 😅
We're eating good tonight!
"Are you really still watching?" 😂😂😂😂😂 PRICELESS!
Well of course!
I was actually fast forwarding through but still caught that line 🤣
I just wiped my screen down with a Clorox wipe. You sir are a trooper!
😂
"BobScat"?!?
The shit in that back of that was perhaps a hint as to how bad a state the vehicle is in.
@@SlartiMarvinbartfast the surprising thing is I’ve bought a fair share of trucks and I’ve actually found that the ones that are beat to hell and have hundreds of “battle scars” are usually the most reliable I bought one that looks perfect like it’s never seen the road before and it’s very much a money pit 😂 same model truck too
Pooper Trooper WHEW !
Hi mustie. I worked on one of these several months ago that had a blown up front differential. I noticed those cracks in the front diff bracket there on yours. These machines operate in 4wd when they are commanded to, and it can be hard on the drivetrain. On that one I worked on, the customer requested a switch to disable the front differential. It was fairly easy, I just spliced a switch into the control wire so it is only on when the switch is pushed. I would definitely recommend it, especially if it is going to be used on hard ground or asphalt.
"Worst shitbox ever"... I think that's quite an accomplishment considering some of the stuff Mustie took home over the years😂
"It's gone from shitbox to just a turd". Stolen.
There's no room for argument, though - this is, literally and unambiguously, the worst box of shit ever.
yea I think I would kiss the nuts with the welder to the bellhousing so you dont need to remove them ever again.
Compared to some of those nearly rusted in half Beetles he's brought back, this thing is one of the better projects I'd say.
Who let's a vehicle get in this state, neglecting a machine never ends well!
We had to tear down a house when I was a much younger man. It was the ultimate hoarders house and no one would touch the place. We needed the money though so we took on the job, but we insisted that we do the majority of the work in the winter time. The owner had passed away and he literally never threw away anything. The entire house and garage was full of possessions plus garbage, from floor to ceiling. None of the garbage bags held together, of course. It was many many dumpsters full (I stopped counting after 10 dumpsters were emptied). You gave my a chuckle or 3 and sparked this particular memory. Fun to watch as always my friend. =)
I really appreciated you moving the camera closer when you were emptying out the crappy bags in the tray. It lets us feel more engaged ... LOL. 🤢
That was so funny 😂😂😂
Now I know what to look forward to. I'm Goin' IN!! 😬😯😨😥😱
I was THIS close to skipping ahead.

And now we know what mustie would do for a Klondike bar lol
😂

I was really hoping this one wasn’t gonna end. Really enjoyed this one!
When I see things like this, I always think that some people should not be allowed to own machinery. I'm always amazed and saddened by the way that so many people seem to just neglect and abuse things like this. After they've paid thousands for it! That poor thing has been thrashed.
I am stocked to see what blew apart in that CVT drive. Wholly handgrenades Batman!
Yeah, broken frame part at the front axle, probably from putting way to much load on the front hydraulics and cruising around like that. And the cover of the CVD drive is already worn out where the sheared off bolt came out, so it was running and driving around like that probably for quite some time making awful noises. Not sure what that center bolt holds together in the CVD, but stuff like that could quickly ruin some bearings on the drive shaft if you are unlucky.
And i am not convinced the seller did not know about the "hidden" issues. They must have been down under the UTV to remove the exhaust at some point and probably realized that fixing all of it is going to get expensive.
@@ProtonOne11 We don't know. The exhaust may have simply fallen off. Really we should be happy they had the presence of mind to even pick it up.
Yeah those things are like 40k new
@@bighammer822 I went on Bobcat's website and they're saying they start at 20 Gs. But I'm sure the base model is pretty worthless. By the time it can do anything 40K wouldn't surprise me.
I like my brothers and sisters around the globe enjoy seeing things get fixed, looking forward to the episodes on the Bobcat UTV. Cold in North Carolina!
Colder here in Sweden probably, -22F 😁
Another great project, I'm learning more and more about diesels and side by side with every video. One thing I've noticed about Mustie 1 is he is very good at keeping the smoke inside the wires.

A #4 response. From a non- engineering perspective. 1) would you replace that starter nut with a slightly oversized six sided self locking non- fiber nut a tap it in with a mustie 1 hammer. Just saying.😊
I’m glad Mustie is having a blast doing this, and also glad that he was rewarded by getting the engine to run. A master class in Zen mechanics.

Absolutely enjoy watching you pull stuff out of the trash and getting them running and working again. Thanks Mustie!
Just for your info Mustie1… you can buy the old replacement flexible fuel can spouts that come with a vent button. Throw that “safety” spout away, put on the new flexi spout and pop the vent button in the back of the can. Just like the good old days.
This may be the MOST EXPENSIVE litter box ever! You did this guy a huge favor paying him anything for taking it away! I better check Brian's tips for guidance. Thanks for sharing, except for the smell that caused my printer to choke!
The seller should have paid you to haul it out of there! Great job and great video.
I liked the look of the car the Bobcat was next to, great video keep up the good work.
This reminds me of my childhood, dad used to clean out houses for the bank. We had to carry 5 gallon buckets of human waste from the back yard of a house, when you walked up to the buckets they had no smell till you started moving them, that’s when the smell greeted you. Believe it or not it wasn’t the worst clean up
There was a big barrel of foul water on a jobsite once that had that problem. It just sat too long and got funky.
I cleaned out homes for the banks for 10 years I loved the job but yes some stuff was just nasty 🤢

Water jug spouts are the old school answer to fix todays crappy gas can spouts. Thanks for another awesome vid.
There's a bunch of neat stuff at that clean up, that little sports car, the blue Nissan pick up, a couple garden tractors, I could hang out there all day. I hope you got that little rig for cheap, it's got a lot of issues.
Thanks!
I made replacement channels for the beds on those things at the shop I work at. They were used at dairies and the manure rusted the beds out.
My 10 year old idealizes you. It's so nice to hear him run around the house yelling the new words he learns from your videos. Yesterday he learned shitbox and turd. Keep up the good work. 😇
Mustie1, Sunday morning and a hot cup of coffee. Who could ask for more? That little diesel sounded quite nice. A good morning in TEXAS
I have a number of machines that need maintenance, service and repair. I need to get after them. Episodes like this certainly remind me to get after them
And an excuse to do it "after this video". And another...
Good find Mustie, maybe spent too much, but those things are a very useful tool around the farm.
The biggest issue with those and the kioti sxs is that crap clutch and belt combo. It work's but that's about it. That setup is not designed for a slow-moving work vehicle. They chew through belts, usually from overheating and stretching, and these clutches fail miserably. I've owned both, used them as designed and they both fall terribly flat. Not cheap to maintain either.
I noticed the drive clutch was made by TEAM. They make some great clutching for sleds but must have some lower end stuff too.
@@luvthesnow with the damage I'm seeing I'd be looking for aftermarket alternatives there. Holes in the sides of the CVT count me out.
Great explanation of your hull repair. Sometimes things that seem counter intuitive just need a proper rational explanation. Much appreciated.
You scored big time with this one
It was the last Thanksgiving Turkey in the store .........
Awesome as usual, something about your videos that just relaxing, easy to learn from... pleasure to watch.. you would make a great teacher for automotive etc...
We've cut a few of those clutches off. Pretty much your olnly/easiest way forwards. you could also make a set of fine threads in the clutch itself, fill the hole with oil, and ram a screw down with an impact.. That can hydraulically pop it off. But.. Often, just cutting it is your best bet.
is it a similar situation to popping a rotor off a generator?
@@sumplais Yes. Clutch mounts to tapered end of crank. They seat and really stick to that taper. Puller bolt used to get it off.
@@sumplais Yes. But there are rarely threads in the clutches, I have never seen it, and you need a very large tap. Oxy acetylene is your best bet.
Yeah it doesn't look savable from that visible damage. It has to come off. Probably ain't going back on either.
Ya know the air cleaner housing MUST first be removed before ANY maintenance can be performed. 😅 Thanks for another great one!
Last week, we watched Mustie vacuum crud out of an old crusty pellet stove. Now we're watching him shovel literally shit out of a box. 😂😂😂
hence the mustie name
hey, the entertainment truly has range and variety around here!
Pure quality
3/4 through the video the lightbulb went off as to way the seller came out with shrimp and a variety of beverages. Between the clutch and the 200lbs of dog shit and kitty litter in the back explains it. Sometimes mustie1 wins big with a cheap buy and sometimes he doesn't. It all equals out. This Bobcat is an interesting rig, I'm happy to see him work on it.
When you picked this up, I think that was a Jag-you-are sitting behind it. I was going to suggest that it would probably provide repair videos for the rest of your life, but it looks like we're going to get plenty on this rig! Thanks for letting us hang out. Looking forward to a new year of Mustie vids!
I seen camera swing to left like that car could be in the cards soon!
Looks like a Ferrari Dino to me, except for the taillights. Or it also resembles a Beetle-based kit car Mustie once worked on. Either way I'm shocked I got this far down in the comments before anyone mentioned it!
Haha- XJS crossed my mind first, then Datsun, then Dino.
But yeah, I'm guessing a little Dino shaped kit car!
That is the scarce Brazilian built Puma GT. Air-cooled VW powered. 'spose we'll see it soon? Too many camera feints toward it.
Good afternoon from a cold and wet Co Waterford, Ireland, blocking the intake with your hand will drop the compression and allow it to spin up to cranking speed - very handy on old diesels with weak starters.
A very valid piece of advice😁
Perseverance! thanks for not giving up and making a solid video....
the variety of machinery you are able to find to work on is impressive, you have a great win percentage with these things and filming skills are the best, thanks

I think the clutch puller would still work fine. The broken part of the bolt is in the crankshaft and the internal threads should still be accessible in the primary. Itll just push against the broken nub instead of the recessed hole in the snout.
Hello everyone from a very rainy London UK.👍

Back when I was growing up, in the late 50's to early 60's, we used to overhaul our own starters. Take the two long bolts out of the back of the starter and that lets the back plate and front housing come off. There are brass bushing in both of those that we would replace. Sometimes the back plate had a little cap you could pull up to oil the back bushing but that went away on the newer starters. The brushes are easy to replace and we would take the armature into a machine shop that could check it to see if it was shorted. The solenoid was pretty easy to fix by flipping the copper washer over and rotating the copper bolt around a 1/2 turn. I will bet you can't even buy starter brushes anymore. Buy rebuilt and let somebody else rebuild your old one. I feel like a grumpy old man... Like your vids and you do way more repairs than a lot of people on RUclips. 👍👌
So now we know what Mustie1 will do for a Klondike Bar! 🤣🤣🤣
For the amount of crap you had to deal with on this one, I hope you got it for free!
He normally doesn’t pressure-wash till later in the process - but this time, I suggest doing it at the outset.

Call it heavy metal Higher than high, feelin' just right Call it heavy metal Desperation on a red line Call it heavy metal noise!!!!!!
"I cant' drive 55!!!"
Well that was easy. “Just” a simple starter change. Nicely done!!!
Looks like you got yourself a real content machine there. Bobcat stuff ain’t cheap to buy and it sure looks like they need to reinvest in their engineering and design teams. External components such as starters should not require removal of other parts and certainly not a section of housing.
That is the curse of modern vehicles, from motorcycles to semi-trucks. Time for we, the consumers to say, NO MORE.
@@martinwade9421 it’s all part of the move to make things less and less serviceable. Our throw away , instant gratification society depends on people remaining complacent. Sometimes Even when you can pinpoint a part that needs replacing you would have to buy an entire assembly to make the repair at very near the cost of a whole new item.
@@joedowling5452 Very true, sir. I love when you can cheat the system by fabricating or finding a component to make a simope fix.
That was some horsecrap engineering right there. They couldn't just tap the holes with some threads? No we'll put these nuts behind this cover. Make a two bolt job into a 20 bolt job. The people that design them don't work on them, that's for sure.
our boat has the same kubota base engine, they are indestructable, we have had diesel overrun 3 times now, hydrolocked a cylinder and bent a con rod, each time we rebuilt it, and it runs as good as ever.
That's enough to give ANYONE a Crappy attitude for the day !!! 😂👍😎
Love it!!! Don't use ATF. Use two stroke oil. Atf isn't meant to be burnt, all the friction modifiers and enhancements, etc. Use something that's supposed to be burnt. Like old oil or 2 stroke oil.
Shouldn’t be using any oil in the cylinders of a diesel engine. Recipe for bent Conrods.

I honestly think that the seller knew about the clutch because the way it has 2 holes in it makes me think that someone tried using a two jaw puller to pull out that broken clutch failed miserably and gave up on it
The way that metal was blown out suggests it was spinning fast when it happened. If they did it with a puller the metal would have been pushed in and they wouldn't have grabbed it there anyways.
What a nice person to feed you on your pick so cool.
Good afternoon from the uk
YORKSHIRE YORKSHIRE YORKSHIRE
To remove clutch a bigger bolt threads into clutch and pushes on the end of the crank. I used to use the same puller for many different clutch’s and just cut pins or dowels of appropriate length. The bolt is already snapped off in the crank so no worries about damaging crank threads. Look up snowmobile clutch pullers and you’ll get the idea. We used to use rope in the cylinder to stop engine but I wouldn’t do that with a diesel. That bolted plate behind the clutch may come off and then press the clutch off that plate. I enjoy your show, my kind of guy 👍🏻
