- Found this 12 volt auto car jump bow while cleaning up an empty property, I tried to charge it but nothing works, lets see what is inside and if it is worth saving.

Darin, the Lionel train sounds like it would make an interesting video. I vote for you retrieving the train. There are lots of people who enjoy model trains especially around the holidays so restoring a model train would make good content.

My big brother had a train set and he used to try to tie me to it to extort my allowance from me. I was little then.
You have to have diodes to go from a/c to dv and a regulatet for voltage control

When I was a kid my dad got several large (4' x 4') crates of old electric train sets from an auction. He wire brushed the track sections, oiled up the motors, wheels and tested them out. Some of those huge old variable speed transformers were bad, and blew the fuse. I think there were several dozen working sets put together out of the good parts. Most of the engines and cars were metal with very little plastic, and were about a foot long. Some engines even had headlights, and smoke makers. I don't remember how much money he sold all that stuff for.

Same here...to the point where the folks didn't want to buy me anything bc they knew I would take it apart right away. So I got a job mowing lawns at age 9 and bought my own stuff.
My first Christmas present after WW2 was a pressed metal fire engine and I was 10 years old. I hadn’t had a Christmas present for at least six years. I got into really serious trouble for finding out how it was built and what made it work. First thing I pulled apart and was unable to completely put it back together.

He also builds crazy vehicles like the famous Rollgolf, a shortened VW Rabbit MK2 with an external roll cage. If you brake hard, it rolls over and lands back on its wheels. Do check his channel.

I vote for a look at the train set as i can remember when you did the slot car video and i was quite surprised on how much i enjoyed it,so i'm guessing the train set would be in the same sort of ball park plus i can remember having a little Hornby Train set when i was a kid,Hornby use to be one of the better train sets over here in the UK when i was a kid but not sure now though. 👍🏾

Yes to the "O-gauge" train set. I was very unhappy when my mother sold ours years ago. BTW, if the engines are heavy like a solid brick of steel they can be quite valuable.
Three videos across a week - I must be in heaven. Yes to model trains, planes automobiles............starter packs. Its all good.
The battery load tester has an easily adjustable needle … on the front of the meter there is a clear slotted adjusting screw … connect a good battery and adjust the reading to show it is GOOD. Addictive shows, BTW! I can’t stop watching them! Thanks!
I have owned this type of jump starter and found that the battery cost ten dollars less then a new charger, so I bought a new charger. Great show as all ways

kind of ticks me off but on the way to the construction site I saw two of these out by the road...stopped, grabbed them, took them home, both dead. One was even fancier than Mustie's...I ended up tossing them in the electronics recycling bin....later on my father passed away and had one in his car....my mom asked me if I wanted it. Since it too was dead I took it apart and learned how easy it was to replace the battery inside. Ordered 1 from amazon and voila, a good booster pack. I could have saved and sold the other two which ticked me off that I didn't care enough to take them apart...free is free and in the case of the two, I could have made a couple of bucks since they sell for close to $200 up here.
After owning 4 stroke boat motors for 15 years. I forgot how great a 2 stroke sounds..you know they're right when the exhaust has that snap !!

I found this particularly interesting because I have an old jumper pack (a Black & Decker) that I put a new battery in about 5 years ago, and it doesn't want to take a charge anymore. just remember when you handle the inverter board because even though it is powered by 12 volts it makes 110 volts and can have charged capacitors after power is disconected.
Now you’re going to make me take apart the fancy schmancy lithium one we used for six months that stopped working one day randomly in the garage. It is one of those NOCOs. We shall see. Thanks for a great video.

On the load tester: (with volt meter), measure a good battery voltage, then hook load meter to it. The screw in the middle of the load meter face should be the meter adjustment. Turn it to match original measured voltage.
I think if you have it plugged in to a wall outlet you can use the AC port! Lol! Great Video! Thanks Mustie!

I like projects of different kinds. All that you have fixed, I also owned them, or have fixed them. I have 2 cheap Lionel train sets. One from Toys R us, the other from ebay. My grandparents were from the great depression, and they instilled this way of thinking to my Aunt, and Mother, which was passed onto their children. You got this gift only one time, take care of it, and fix it, because you will not get another one.
I'm sure you understand about these smart chargers, they have to have some kind of charge in order to start charging. If you use an old-fashioned dumb charger then it will charge these newer batteries a little bit until the regular charger will work. I even do this on my tool batteries that I get from the dump. I probably have over 200 at the time that I got working again.😁
Or just put a welding travo over it and tap it a few times . The will relive the dead cells .
Exactly the point maybe not in this particular case but my Ryobi drill batteries the 18 V batteries have a charging system is built into the battery and if the battery sits on your shelf and the voltage creeps below I think it is 6.5 V the battery charger that’s in the battery itself will not charge the battery it’ll come up as a junk battery but all you have to do is jump it with another new charged battery to get it above the 6.5 V and I’m not sure that number that might be 5.5 but I’ve done it on several of my batteries especially those little half batteries those seem to crap the bed soon after you buy them and everybody throws them away but all you really need to do is jump it charge it with another battery and then plug it into the charger. I have a smart charger and I have an old craftsman charger that I can run the charge up to like 14.7 V without the charger testing the battery I guess that’s when you need a human to test the battery right the old days!!!

@@Chappomusic You do what? Hook up a welder to your battery posts? AC or DC, or doesn't matter? Like for 1/10th of a second, or until it becomes all solid metal? If it's AC, how about just skipping the welder and connect house power to your batt. If it's a Lithium ion battery I'm guessing either choice could make a spectacular fire
I've saved a few batteries with a bench power supply. Bought an electric chainsaw, battery was dead and got sent a new saw entirely, but I got to keep the old one so I took the battery apart
The 80 something volt charger obviously gave an error because the battery sat at like 20 volts, it would've passed a ridiculous amount of current. Set a bench supply to little over 3 volts with a current limit and slowly charged each cell until the pack was high enough for the main charger to be happy, still works a few years later
That looks like one of those UPS batteries (battery backup, not the package wrecking company).
Possibly also golf cart. I know the 12v9Ah one I used to make a UPS is from one of those.
Call OOPS when it absolutely positively has to be there over do.
It's the same type of gel battery, they do have a wide variety of peak discharge rates tho.
Mobility scooters too. I'd bet there's more "12/18" (or 15 or 17ah) batteries in mobility applications than anything else.
@@whitesapphire5865 Some older E scooters use them as well.....pre-li ion ones. My landlord had one and it was left in the garage uncharged and all the batteries froze and swelled. Pulled them out, ordered new ones, ran like a top. He used to use it to run around the industrial building where I rented my shop.

Repaired a different model years ago. Just needed a replacement battery. Sourced one from an old UPS and it worked great... until the plastic jumper cables cracked. Thanks for the video.
Hey Mustie, on the face of that load tester , there's a small plastic flat head screw just below the center of the gauge needle. If you rotate that it will adjust the position of the needle. Simply connect your multimeter to a resting battery and adjust the needle on the load tester to match. i.e. if your meter reads the resting voltage is exactly 13 volts, have the needle point right at the 13 on the load tester. Train set sounds cool! Thanks man

The 120 volt supply is a switched mode where the driver feeds it with a high frequency which is far more efficient, needing no iron core and a using ferrite core. The output of that then needs to be converted to 60 Hz 120 volts which would be done via the devices on the output side.
More simply known as an inverter. Those ones tend to be sub 100w often 65w which will run a tiny tv or laptop supply.
The little green fuse should be 30A.
Means 30A*12V=360VA.
This would be the absolute maximum power rating.
As this inverter looks really crappy I would guess that the transistors blow before the fuse does.
Lets say at 20A. means 20A*12V=240VA. the efficiency of that thing should be quite low. I guess 60%//0.6. means: 240VA*0.6=144VA. As there is not much of a heatsink on anything and that fan is not pulling air threw like crazy this thing might handle 70-90VA (W) permanently.
Electric motors mostly do not work on those inverters as they don't put a proper 50/60Hz sine wave out.
@@radio-pirol Brush type motors will work on these little inverters as long as they have enough watts. I have used drills with them.
@@radio-pirol one if the 4 bridge rectifier diodes blow will also blow the fuse.
It's the first thing I used to check on CRT arcade games monitor chassis's.
On Williams pinball games it's on the main power / solenoid board.

On your battery tester, I want to say anything that has a needle gauge should have a adjustable set screw to adjust the needle gauge. Maybe.
Those things drift off after a while, i bet that one is older than i am. I have a Metrel insulation tester which has to be calibrated every 2 years.
Back in the day you could adjust. All modern cheap meters are sealed with no adjustment at all.
There is, it’s the plastic screw slot on the meter needle housing, set it to the correct voltage when the button is not depressed. If you look at the meter it shows barely eleven volts…
it does. that plastic screw in the middle is a calibration screw.
Very nice! I used to work at an electronics recycling center and those sealed lead acid batteries were almost always the weakest link. I'm a little disappointed you didn't properly test out the AC inverter though. It's probably good for 100-200 watts. You could power the train set off of it for sure!

My father-in-law give me a Schumacher power pack similar to this one and I replace the battery $40 ,👍works like a brand new one! I Believe you have to keep a charge on it every so often and also out of the heat and cold.

I like the non-mechanical content. Used to wrench on things until my back and shoulders went out on me. I resurrect old computers now. Some can be heavy, but most of them are really light weight compared to an engine or transmission.
I love this channel. Good instruction on troubleshooting and figuring out how things work. Let’s see the train set to find out if it works or not. I want to know.

That GREEN, RED, GREEN Light at startup is normal for the inverter. It's the P.O.S.T.(Power On Self Test) for the board. MOST of them list the Watts the inverter will handle somewhere on its labeling. I've run drills off them before, but in all fairness ... that thing YOU plugged in looked like a power hungry behemoth. Lol. Anything less than that should work fine. Great video! Thanks!
I suspect it may be a 150 watt transformer, so maybe a shop light or laptop, something along those lines.
Hmm, low power I think. If you looked at the power transistors in the inverter, they were very small. Something up to 100 watts would be the limit I think, like an inspection light ?…..
I'm surprised and impressed that they made this user serviceable. I have a high priced heavy duty xp10 or something, can't remember the manufacturer but that swelled up within 6 months and it is sealed tight, like Sonic welded or something. It no longer jump starts anything but does work as a high priced battery charger for a cell phone. Or I suppose I can stab it with a screwdriver someday to start an emergency fire...
It's not that they made it user serviceable, if you look at it it's a commodity Chinese product, it was made to be manufactured as fast as possible likely and the tooling for friction welds probably wasn't worth the investment

I had a buddy that set-up a train set and put tracks all the way around all the walls of his hobby shop, 2 feet from the ceiling. You might do that in your shop and start your show with a sign on a locomotive going by the camera.

Of all the things taken apart in two generations, that's a first, lol. Definitely a yes for the Lionel train set! btw, rechargeable batteries, where I can buy same, are over $40 plus tax. The bare charger apparatus was $54, on sale.
Lol…. Love the ending…. Rebuilt mine too…. It was a salvaged from a dumpster…. I recharge it with a 15 watt solar panel mounted to my garage door. The unit sits on my table saw…. Awesome video….

I have an old O scale train set like that, you'll have to fasten the tracks to wood or something. The rail sections tend to come apart when you get the train rippin' along! I hope there are some switches in the kit, they are fun to revive.
The AC outlet has enough power to run my CPAP machine for 3 days on a full charge. That thing saved me when we lost power.
I found this so educational! Now I know what to look for if mine ever craps out!

He said in a comment on another video that he gets migraines from the welding fumes from the bodywork. Not sure if there will be any progress.
@@kjdude8765 in which case, he needs to invest in a fume extractor. In the UK we have to use fume extraction even when welding outside. It's Law.
However, most home welders don't bother.
Welding produces some nasty gases such as carbon monoxide, cyanide and other health threatening things.
I know right? New bugs coming in and nothing on the E pickup......speaking of which, gives me an idea...wouldn't that be a great project to switch over to electric? The battery in the back would definitely help with balance......
Yes, to the train set. The thing that usually goes bad first in a Lionel engine is the "directional" switching unit, in the tender of a steam locomotive or some where inside the body of a deasil.
Depending upon what locomotive you have, the set is almost worthless to being a very rare and valuable one. The cars are the same, and some "transformers" are also rare and valuable.
There are collectors out there that would be able to value the set.

I think the reason the grinder didnt work was because the AC power outlet is most likely fed from an inverter..which is powered from the DC battery.. You took the black box apart ( the one with the fan on the end) and I would guess it is an inverter to supply the AC to the power outlet
This means you can go to a remote location and use a 110v appliance, fed from the battery. I may be wrong, but I ghink you should check if the AC outlet works after you replaced the battery.
By the way.. really enjoy the videos.. I am just a few years older than Mustie and spent the first 18 doing alot of the same things.. making stuff work with no money..and no tools.. we were dirt poor but I had alot of fun and learnt a lot...so watching these brings back many happy memories.
I'm sure it's either been figured out or addressed by now, but the reason that the 110/120V outlet LED flashes between red and green is because of the soft start technology. They can't really power motors because of the modified sine wave (square wave staged sequences) as long as you don't have a load on it (like an incandescent light). Judging by how small the inverter is, it's probably between 50 and 100 watts continuous/150 possible peak. The LED itself will be green when in normal operation but will change to red if the input voltage from source is above a safe threshold or if the current draw is greater than what the device can handle. I would test it with different wattages of bulbs to see what it's cutoff would be and note it on the device somewhere. Definitely don't want to run a motor on it though since it risks burning up the mosfets, even if they are behind a transformer.

Great video, the cost of replacement batteries highlights just why items get thrown away rather than repaired, to help recycle and keep plastic out or being dumped politicians and manufacturers need to get their act together.
You are lucky to have a good 12 volt 18Ahr battery lying around. Those are pricy at over $95 for a good brand in these parts. I have a bunch of those jumper packs all needing fresh batteries. Thanks for the video.
Love this one. I have pretty much the same jumper pack, and was always nervous that it would die on me. Aside from inflating tires and jumping a dead car battery, I also use it to run a few lamps during blackouts in winter. Now I know what it’s innards are like, and the prospect of replacing the battery. Very cool. Edit…..and leaving it charged in all the time. I always thought that might ruin the battery, but geez, if Mustie does it, then I will.
I think most of those jumper packs have replaceable batteries in them, most people don't know and throw them out when they no longer work LOL
Remember charge on trickle or maintenance charge if you have the option. Low charge rate keeps them working without drying the battery out.
