a friend of mine had an old ford tempo that wouldn't shift she was a single mother and really depended on it for everything, she had called the junk yard to come and get it and i was over looking at it before they came and found the plastic cap dry rotted and came off so i took a soda can tab off a can and used it to hold the connector on the ball and drove it around the block so it worked until the new piece came i put that on and she drove it for another 10 years until she got the volvo

I really miss my Ford Tempo, should never have sold it. The only thing wrong with it was the right rear door window wouldn't work (power windows), everything else on that car worked great. I somehow got 42mpg with it on a 300 mile trip in the middle of summer with the AC on....I didn't know those cars did that well on gas, but after making the same trip several times and got within 1-2mpg of it I came to realize they were much more economical than I thought.

When my beagle lab mix beauty passed at almost exactly 15 she could still get up on her own and no issues with bathroom activities. She was slow, she didn't do much but she LOVED to ride and short walks. The last 5 years were as good as the first.

Great video guys. I have an 09 Tacoma Sport, much like the one you have here. I had some of the same issues you had here. The shifter on mine is an issue if the truck sits for to long. Gets very stiff and doesn't always line up with the gear it's supposed to. You handled that issue very well. Another problem I had was the wheels. I had the same ones you have there and the way the clear coat is coming off, it causes air to escape slowly. When it's cool out, it seems worse. I ended up replacing the wheels with ones from a later model 4Runner. Same size. I have heard of other problems such as a very stiff gas door. The hinge gets so rusted that the door will break off. Yours looks like it may be almost there. Mine hasn't gotten there yet and I make sure it stays lubed. When I bought mine, it too had a draw bar in the receiver hitch. It too was rusted in place. It took about 2 weeks of spraying it with PB blast and beating it back and forth for it to finally come out. Now I don't leave it in and it comes in and out very easy for when I need to tow my camper. The one you have here has a new frame which is a plus. I'm not sure about the rust you have on the rockers. I have never seen that happen on any other Tacoma. I live north of Boston, so I see much of the same rust problems you do. I think with a little brake work, alternator and battery and some other minor repairs, you really got your moneys worth for this truck. The mileage really isn't too much an issue. With a little work, you can really make some money on this truck. Best of luck with this truck.

I've replaced the shift cables in my 5 speed Toyota Echo twice now on the bottom of that shift lever there's probably a plastic bushing/pivot, and a cup on the cable.
He says it looks like something should be holding it; there's usually a U shaped clip that clips around the whole end on the cable, when you pop it into the plastic on the shifter; it should click and lock via the U shaped clip.
I love my Toyota, but the feel and function of all the shift cables they use is garbage; longevity too.
They want about $900 for new replacements; I get em' $20 a set from the scrapyard. Truck's a steal either way.

I'm all for troubleshooting and repairing all things but this vid made me realize that RUST issues are difficult to get by and ultimately kill the car. I'm in the market for a used Tacoma and thought an older truck would be fine, but rust is one thing I need to thoroughly check when buying it or just spend more money and buy something newer. Thanks Mustie

Great Video as per usual Mustie, we love the Toyota's over here in the UK too, but again you have to prepare the underbodies properly as the salt on our roads can produce quite alot of surface rust.
Can always count on the engine starting though.

I remember buying a 91 civic about 10 years ago that had sit for a while. Trailered it home and got it running and the thing smoked like you would not believe. Massive clouds of thick white smoke. I drove it for a little while and as the miles passed, the smoke thinned out and eventually stopped. I drove that car for 3/4 years and it never puffed one drop of smoke again and ran like a champ.

I just started the video and I dont know if you cover it or not but take a close look at the frame where the engine mounts. The first 2 years of the Tacoma redesign had an issue of not getting the inside of the frame sealed against corrosion. There was a voluntary recall on those trucks for a couple years because the engines would fall out due to frame rot.

If you run a business, it's not always worth the gamble. The car takes up space, and space is money. You can use X on this one and earn X on it. Or get it out for 0.5X and spend the time on something you earn 3X on. Or less, if it takes less time. Time is also money.
