Vintage Air Compressor Stalls Under Load. Cheap Fix.

- a friend asked me to look at his sons big air compressor that is used to blow out sprinkler systems in the fall to avoid freezing, at 1st it would not run at all and he went through the tune up, now when building pressure it will stall out. lets see if we can figure what is wrong with it and fix it.

Mustie, you would've loved a Sullair compressor I worked on for a friend years ago.
It was a 70's model screw compressor powered by a 1600 VW industrial spec engine, I was thinking of you while working on it.
It was all original, ex-military machine here in Australia, but was US made, designed and built by Sullair.
The guys at my local Sullair dealers had never even seen one before, and being so old they couldn't provide any info or spare parts etc.
The machine used the VW engine from the factory.
BTW, The valve you pulled apart is the pressure regulator/throttle control.
It actuates the big throttle control diaphragm unit and unloader valve.
The throttle should start out at the full throttle position when the engine is off.
The air hose outlets should be closed before starting the engine.
Once the engine is started, the engine should rev up to make air, then as soon as it comes up to pressure, that regulator valve you disassembled should lift the crusty diaphragm inside and slow the engine down to idle by allowing air to enter the big diaphram unit, and that moves the big lever which opens and closes the air intake for the compressor unit and also controls the engine throttle via a cable.
At the same time as dropping the idle, the idle unloader valve lower down should open to vent enough air to allow the engine to run unloaded.
The other valve tee'd in next to the one you dismantled is the shutdown blowdown valve, which you hear hiss for a while when the machine is switched off, it allows tank pressure to drain off gradually at shut down.
When the valves to the air hoses are opened, the resulting pressure drop should allow the pressure regulator to close, and unloader valve and engine throttle to open, increasing/decreasing air output and engine speed dependant on air demand/valve positions at the hose outlets👍
I rented one back in the 70's, two cylinders made the power, the other two were modified to compress the air. Half a VW engine did'nt make a lot of power but it did the job.
@@billstuart8481 My late friend Wayne used one of those for his sandblasting setup, adjacent to his home built powder coat booth. It was loud as hell, but it ran great. I tuned it a few times for him over the years.

I have an emergency tyre pump hose that can use the engine as a compressor, the hose can be screw into a spark plug hole to get you out of flat tyre trouble in an emergency.
However, the machine I mentioned used the entire VW engine, running on all 4 cylinders, 4 spark plugs, distributor and 4 plug leads.
It directly drove a an oil flooded screw compressor airend, similar to the one in the video but a much smaller unit.
The airend was mounted where the gearbox would normally attach if the engine was used in a car, then it pumped air/oil mix into an oil separator tank, same idea as shown in the video.👍

It cracks me up how his hands follow along the machinery during his thought process, then stop on a pressure valve. Oh! It’s likely this. Just like a divining rod. Take apart, clean it up, Bob’s your aunt! Love this stuff.
Well, there you have it, people have to learn how to use O-rings, and what their purpose is in a machine like this oldie. I'm glad that I got taught about how to use O-rings by my granddad. He was a good educated electro-mechanic. worked on old elevators and he build amps, and biked out and fixed people's radios in their homes after the war. and later he did their TVs too, when people started getting TVs in the homes.
I was about, 7-8 years old when he let me tear a radio apart, and he was sitting fixing other stuff, but told me everytime what those things was for and how it made the radio work. Still miss him a whole lot. He died last year. Tough last 5-6 days, he couldn't eat, everything my Grandma fed him came out the nose. and he suddenly weakened. So, I sat and wet his mouth and lips for the last 4-5 days with those cotton q-tips you know? they are made for that exact purpose. I cared for him for 4 years after he suffered a stroke in 2011. And in 15' he finally got some homecare from the rotten system here in denmark. Yeah, Something is rotten in the state of denmark. where have I read that before?

The part you stripped is a pressure regulator, and the screw/locknut is to adjust the pressure being fed to the actuator. If that hole in the bell housing (top) was blocked, the regulator wouldn't work. By leaving the screw extended you're allowing maximum pressure but the pressure may fluctuate depending on the air pump type. Some pumps generate a pulse air flow and the regulator evens the pulse.
I caught myself yelling relief valve over and over haha but yeah if air is just escaping through that then you won't build pressure to operate the throttle.
I was thinking about the unloader valve.
Are you sure about the screw? Every regulator I've ever used you have to turn the screw in to apply higher pressure. With the screw out there should be no flow. That's why I'm thinking the regulator is just not working at all in this case, it was clogged before and cleaning it out is now letting max pressure through.
@MartysRandomStuff in = more tension on the spring which = more pressure required until relief.
@@MrWick86 So we are not seeing some other supply tube going to the throttle control and that regulator is an output (relief valve)? I guess that might explain the floating part inside that I've never seen on any regulators I've worked on.

That’s a little Ford tractor motor. I have the same set up on my 1953 Jubilee. Finding the problem not being familiar with a Sulair air compressor was impressive. Fixing the exhaust leak would bring this unit back all together.
The best thing for me on this channel is the variety of machines, components, gadgets that Musti gets through his fingers to fiddle with. I saw these big compressors multiple times on constriction sites, but never knew how they work, or what's inside . Also, the many different styles of carburetors, pumps, motors to be seen on his Videos is very interesting. No other channel I know has that...
Plus the entertaining deductive way of taking us along to figure stuff out is a big Buena .
These are GREAT compressors. They will give air all day for jackhammers and such. What a find....

Hi Musti,,,I learned a lot from the locals here in pH,and I had a chainsaw with issues ,it was that thin rubber thing In the carb,we could not get a new asap and he said ahh no problem,and he told me to go buy soap for washing clothes,he boild some water added the soap ,after a min he threw in the rubber after a min he took it out rinse it in water and to my big surprise it was soft like new,maybe it works on hard rubber in your valve as well 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Nice catch on the diaphragm. The unit needs some more love. Maybe the owner can return it for more fun and education when he has finished blowing out the irrigation lines.

I took off of work yesterday to have a nice 5 day stretch of vacation. It did feel like a Saturday but I knew it wasn't. But now Mustie has made me rethink my days. Happy Thanksgiving Mustie and the Mustieheads
Been watching Mustie for a long time. He should teach a shop class where each student has to bring in something that doesn’t work and he can teach the class how to fix it or at least teach the students what failed on it to make it not work. School has to get back to this kind of stuff. Shop classes benefit everyone

when you know the basics of how something works, its easy to fix. Fixing a car for example is easy once you know how the basics work.

Only 15mins in. I have a 48 greyhound bus, wouldn't make air pressure due to the regulator diaphragm rotted out. Used some rubber gasket material from the parts store to make a new one, works like new again. Always watch your videos to learn a little more!
Its a scroll compressor. That tank is an oil and air separator.. It has more than a couple of things wrong with it
Rotary, Too old for a Scroll.
Helical rotary screws.
Oil makes the screws seal .
Often the oil air separation filters are clogged and bad oil won't let them build pressure.
Most modern tow behinds use this design since 1970s.

We serviced a larger Sullair Compressor that was used for sandblasting. It had a 6 cylinder Detroit Diesel engine. The governor was controlled by air pressure. The engine ran wide open until it built up some air pressure. I never liked changing oil and having it start running wide open with no oil pressure for a few seconds. I added an air fitting to connect shop air to control the governor on startup when we changed oil.
When the Titanic gets raised, Mustie will be hired to get it running again

That thing is a pressure regulator. As the pressure drops, the pintle drops and cuts off air to the big vacuum throttle control. As pressure increases, the diaphragm moves allowing more air to the throttle motor. That adjustment sets the preload on the spring and thus affects how much pressure is needed to increase engine throttle. Hopefully it has some kind working regulator or emergency pop off releif valve because it would be hella dangerous to run without it.

The bell-shaped part is the regulator. The pressure gauge is the one on the far top left. Adjust the regulator back into where it was (the screw and nut on top of bell), and it should build air to around, maybe 185psi. The regulator has not changed over the years and you can get one. I work on Vac trucks that use the similar on demand air compressors. But you were spot on for diagnosis!

So, the higher the air pressure the harder it pushes against the diaphragm in the bell, which lifts the needle. Lletting more air into the bellows moving the control arm. If air was leaking by that gasket, the needle won’t lift and the bellows won’t move. And by backing out the set screw he made it much more sensitive.

I just rebuilt fixed a Smith 150 cfm rotary screw compressor.
It has a 4 cylinder Ford Diesel ( Dover) 1980 .
I was told Smith pioneered portable tow behind units first made from Ford model A where 2 cylinders were converted to air and two were gas engine.
There are some later which used a Ford 302 V8 half compressor.
But Smith of( Kentucky coal mines ) pioneered helical screw compressors .
Quiet no vibration etc.
Sadly Smith corp is gone
But there is a group online that restores old units .
Schramm also had similar designs.

Ps you are supposed to open air outlets to start cold until unit warms up.
There is an unloader valve to turn compressor off to initially start unit until warmed up.
I've seen some others based off the same principle. Diesel Creek has one that I think uses a Wisconsin air cooled V4 with two cylinders converted to compression duties only.

@@ELOfanatic yes. Many used this idea until rotary screw compressor came out . Some had 390 V8 Ford half engine half compressor on 4 cylinders .
Rotary screw compressor have no valves and piston plus rings to wear out. Oil flooded between helixes close together is the sealing surface .
Lasts far longer .

LOL at the acorn rain from that muffler. Based on what I have learned watching your videos I figured it was a 'pressure governor' issue as the engine did not speed up as you opened the air valve. Looks like 1920s or 30s tech with the updraft carburetor. Back in the 1980s I worked for a contractor who had a Jaeger air compressor from the early 50s that we used for jack hammers, pneumatic drills, and a portable sand blaster. At one point he picked up a newer Ingersoll-Rand to replace it but he sold the I-R and kept the old Jaeger.

That regulator is a Cornelius co2 regulator. They make rebuild kits for those.
