I live close to Travis AFB. I see C-17's all the time. But nothing like this. This place is on my bucket list. I would love to camp out for a couple of weeks, and see a variety of beautiful aircraft.
These also fly from CFB Trenton near where I work. It boggles my mind when I see them, often at low level, not appearing to go particularly fast - I can't understand why something that big, and that slow doesn't just drop out of the sky. Overtime something like that flies over, I turn into a five year old, pointing at the sky in amazement.
Charleston AFB representing! The past year years when there has been a Hurricane on the East Coast, Charleston and Shaw will relocate their aircraft here to Batksdale AFB along with all of Seymour Johnson’s F-15s. There is a public park on the south end of Runway 15 and if you can catch them on the day they are returning to their home base, it is an “Air Show” in itself. Your close enough where the afterburners rattle your bones and you can feel it in your chest when the wave after wave of F-15s depart! And have also been lucky to get some F-35’s from Eglin also. And despite all our Barksdale B-52s, the base is large enough to accommodate all those aircraft and personnel all at the same time.

Impressive video. I flew the Lockheed C-141B on many low level tactical routes. It was considerably smaller, but it was not this maneuverable as this C-17 is demonstrating. Didn’t fly the C-17, so maybe someone here that has flown both aircraft could comment.

I'm curious, why do all these aircraft routinely transverse this particular area? Inbound approach for a nearby base? I'm sure it's not for photo ops. Pretty awesome nonetheless. Thanks.
That is so surreal, like a massive prehistoric animal floating through a valley! Spare a thought for the person driving a car on that road that goes through that valley, when a massive jet roars above them. I'd need a new pair of pants after that.

@@keithfreitas2983 Actually the planes fly higher than 50 feet for a cargo drop. After the cargo exits the plane, the main chutes aren’t fully inflated until a few seconds before impact on the drop zone. Depending on the drop weight, number of chutes, and atmospheric factors, the rate of fall for those few seconds under full canopy is about 30 feet per second. During the drop sequence, the altitudes discussed in my previous paragraph are a matter of physics. During the low level ingress to the drop sequence and egress after drop completion, the aircraft may fly higher or lower than the drop altitude depending on combat tactics. Years ago when I was a navigator in C-141s it was common for our crews to fly extremely low over the desert terrain, pop up to drop altitude, then descend to low level for terrain masking.
Low level flight in a training situation (which this is) is essential for a possible real world scenario where high level airspace is denied or dangerous. Radar centers can earlier detect incoming aircraft at higher altitudes and greater distances in order to alert defensive missile launch batteries to attack the aircraft.
