This C-17 landed at the small commuter airport (TPF - Peter O'Knight airport) just south of downtown on Davis Islands, in Tampa instead of Mac Dill AFB.
Take a look at the two airports on on Google maps. The runways are lined up closely enough that this is not the first time that a military "heavy", has set up for final approach from the east before an "oh shoot" moment when they realized that there are no private homes along the runway at MacDill AFB, (who's runway is long enough to be designated an alternative for the space shuttle).
When I was shooting news in Tampa, I shot the departure of a Brazilian C-130 who did the same thing.
This ought to be a great story for this pilot's, great, great, grand children!
Here is the link to the landing video shot by Ryan, one of the pilots trapped at the airport all day till this take off:
    • C17 Lands At Wrong Air...
Also, they backed the tail of the C17 over the water in the channel before takeoff!
Thanks for visiting thewebbworks on RUclips.

Well it's sort of curious but there is in fact a lot of leeway in the military - particularly in the Air Force - for this sort of minor error in judgment. The pilot did not do anything reckless, dangerous or stupid, and managed to make his getaway with no fuss either. I tend to think this will be quietly overlooked by his superiors.
Also enjoyed seeing that big bird scramble to get airborne. Nice.

***** I saw that the C-17 was from McGuire AFB. Worked Avionics on the "old", C-141A's & B's, at McGuire, both as a G.I. and as a Civil Servant. Retired from McGuire, a "hundred years ago!" Never worked the C-17 as it didn't come on line until after I retired.
I agree with you - they were probably reprimanded - that would about do it. Haven't read the Incident Report, but they may have accepted a "visual" approach and told the tower (at McDill) that they had the "field in sight", and pressed on for the landing. Even if that was their first trip to McDill, from McGuire, you would think, when they looked out of the window, that the field seemed "a bit too small." Having flown for over 30 years, myself, I've almost headed for the wrong field - sometimes tough to discern when they are fairly close together. If the chart has the field going E to W, and you see a runway going N and S. You better fall back and regroup! They made it OK; that's the important thing.

Secondly, I have been apart of that type of flying since working in the commercial. There several airports that can handle a medium size aircraft on a not so long runway. I remember the John Wayne. Orange County Airport is a short long enough runway for a medium size 757-200. We do the same maneuver on that runway. And so do the other airline as well. And the pilots always come on the PA to let the passengers know what we are about to do for take off. It felt so different when we have to do that procedure. Also, many of the neighborhoods surrounding this small I to medium size airports may have a noise restriction there as well. Aircraft have to get up fast over those areas not to make so much noise.

Hmm... I'm not so sure about it being an accident. Something must have been wrong with the craft. In the description, you said both the C-130 and C-17 took off at the same point on the runway. Meaning the runway could be used in a emergency landing zone for those aircrafts. I see a lot of emergency vehicles out there like something is wrong with the plane. Trained Air Force pilots with an aircraft packed with high-tech navigational equipment don't just land someplace and go "Yay we're......... waaaaaait..... this isn't right...."
But still, great video, that is an awesome bird :)

take it for what it's worth, but c17 pilots don't have a navigator on board. it's 2 pilots up there on the flight deck. also, i've heard that this airport doesn't fly with a radio tower, so likely they were in contact with mcdill ATC and then their nav system was zoomed out a little too far and they hit the wrong runway. but that's just my guess. a c17 wouldn't land on a 1000 yard airstrip if it could help it. even in an emergency, imo.

    • @CodeEpsilon
      @CodeEpsilon 10 лет назад +2

Arnoldo Offermann I don't know if you later found out about it or not, but the small airstrip that the C-17 landed at has no ATC. They have some name for that kind of airstrip but basically it's up to you to communicate with the pilots and to use line of sight to determine if you can land or not.

Actually the majority of airports/airfields have no tower. They have too few landing/takeoffs to warrant a tower or are in controlled airspace such as this field. Pilots follow procedure and use assigned radio frequencies to coordinate movement. It's very common. Many have lights that turn on and off by radio signal from inbound/outbound aircraft.

And, because the runways are the same heading, it's a huge mistake that the pilot is going to have to live with when it comes to crap talking from other pilots for the rest of his career but something the Air force is likely going to brush aside yet make it apart of new safety briefings hahahahaha.

Jets with engines under the wings actually aren’t allowed to use reverse thrust at the gates because they can suck in objects or staff jets with engines by the tail or higher up can reverse thrust if they want to though they normally just get a tug as it’s easier and they make less wind/noise at the gates.
