    I’ve done approaches into MacDill AFB for runway 23 many times and I can see how the AF pilot may have mistaken the wrong airfield for landing. Peter o Knight’s runway 22 lines up nearly perfectly with runway 23 at MacDill and it’s easy to confuse the two runways, especially if you’re doing a visual approach on final for runway 23 at MacDill, aren’t familiar with the area, and the Peter O Knights airfield being uncontrolled. Glad to hear the pilots landed safely and were able to take back off again. Definitely a call sign review is in order lol.

    • @maddogjust4u288
      @maddogjust4u288 2 года назад +25

      A similar incident happened in 1977 involving 4/F-105s transiting to MacDill. The weather was partly cloudy with showers in the area around Tampa Bay. MacDill had been using Runway 04 but due to the wind shift, from the SW, Runway 22 become the active runway about the same time the flight of 4/F-105s were inbound. In 1977, MacDill had a PAR approach but couldn't get their equipment aligned quickly enough for the inbound F-105s so, the flight lead requested a Visual Approach to runway 22 from Tampa Approach! Tampa Approach approved the Visual Approach, the flight lead reported the runway in sight, and the fight was handed off to MacDill Tower for the Visual Approach. The flight checked in with MacDill tower for the Visual Approach, however due to the low visibility, the tower controller stated to the flight lead, "not insight, check wheels down, wind ___, cleared to land runway 22 MacDill." The flight lead responded, "Runway 22 in sight, base, gear down, cleared to land rwy 22!" As noted in the video above, the runway at MacDill is nearly 12,000 ft but, the runway at Peter O' Knight is only about 3,000 ft ...and the F-105 would use about 2,000 ft just to get the wheels on the ground due to their speed! When the flight lead landed and realized his mistake, he unfortunately had already deployed his drag chute. Flight lead quickly dropped his chute, instructed the other 3 aircraft to go-around, and executed a touch and go! The flight proceeded to MacDill and landed uneventful, minus one drag chute for flight lead which had to be retrieved from Peter O' Knight ground crew.
      A note of caution for both MacDill Tower and Tampa Approach: Never assume the pilot has the correct runway 22 in sight for a Visual Approach for these 2 runways. Because of the close proximity and the runway alignments for MacDill and Peter O' Knight, it's very easy to make the mistake and land at the wrong airport. While I was working at MacDill Tower in the late 70s, we would have at least 10 civilian aircraft land Runway 22 at MacDill each year and the pilot thought he/she was landing at Peter O' Knight. Never assume the pilot has the correct runway in sight for a Runway 22 Visual Approach and I'm positive this is exactly what happened to the C-17! In 1977, it was the responsibility of the Tampa Approach Controller to monitor the aircraft to it's destination but failed to do so in this case but, the tower controller correctly stated to the 4/F-105s "Not in Sight, cleared to land" for the Visual Approach since the pilot stated he "had the runway in sight!"
      On a side note: While working traffic on a busy Friday at MacDill in 79', with F-16s everywhere, a DC-10 cleared for a Visual Approach to rwy 36L at Tampa, landed on rwy 04 at MacDill in the middle of a severe thunderstorm!

      @@Skybusdriver Terry ...another incident that happened at MacDill in 79 involved T-38's from Craig AFB (since closed). During a fly-in for the summer 79 Air Show at MacDill, we had aircraft parked everywhere on what's called the "North and South" ramps. The T-38's were cleared for a Visual Approach to rwy 22, but because of past knowledge of pilots landing at the wrong airport, I was watching the flight very closely to ensure they landed on the correct runway. Turns out my hunch was right as the flight of 2/T-28s, tried to land on the North Ramp which is/was also aligned with rwy 22. When I finally spotted the aircraft on a short final to the ramp, I quickly told them to "Go Around" averting a catastrophic accident.

    Large USAF cargo planes, like the c-17 and c-5, often need longer runways because of the massive potential weight of their loads. For the same reason, they are also designed for insane amounts of lift.
    What that means is that these planes can take off after a disproportionally short distance if carrying minimal payload.
    The C-5 was even designed to be able to take off and land in rough and undersized forward air bases despite being the largest airplane for much of its service.

    • @alexburke1899
      @alexburke1899 7 месяцев назад +4

      I don’t think the C-17 can be fitted with JATO or RATO rockets for short field takeoffs like some earlier planes either, I assume because they designed it with so much lift and power to do short field landings and takeoffs it didn’t actually need them anymore. I’m always amazed when these planes fly above my house because they fly pretty low and slow compared to airliners giving the impression they are flying incredibly slow.

    Turns out, Gen. Mattis (!!) was on board the flight - on way back from Italy.
    The pilot first mistook a 3rd airport (NOT Peter O Knight) for McDill...and two other crew 'corrected' him (incorrectly) saying no, that's Peter O Knight when in fact that airport was Tampa Executive airport. So when they saw Peter O Knight, due to a very long flight and fatigue, and thinking they'd just passed Peter O Knight (when in fact it was Tampa Executive they'd just passed), they assumed this one was McDill AFB when actually it was the REAL Peter O Knight.
    Gen. Mattis evidently laughed it off saying no harm done, he'd made many mistakes as a young military man, put in a good word for the pilot saying it is much ado about nothing (super cool of him to do so).
    Anyway that's a bit more information for whomever is interested. Here's a link to the story...

    I remember when this happened. I grew up 40 minutes from MDAF so it was quite the talk at the time. I'm sure everyone knows they emptied the fuel tanks and all the cargo to get it off the ground with only 30 minutes of fuel to get to MDAF. I don't think it was ever released as to how the mistake happened. Probably selected the wrong airport when programing the FMS.

      "Journalists from the Tampa Bay Times and other news outlets filed Freedom of Information Act requests, hoping that one day an investigation might produce an explanation. Finally, it happened. A reporter for the Tampa Tribune got one of the first copies and published a story Wednesday.
      The account said the Air Force attributed the error to 'fatigue, complacency and a lack of flight discipline.' The pilot had lost sleep over a phone left in a taxi. The flight from Italy took 12 hours. Midair refueling sapped crew energy.
      As the C-17 approached Tampa, the pilot mistook a smaller airfield for MacDill, according to the account. The co-pilot and a crew member corrected him: It was Peter O. Knight, they said.
      But it was actually Tampa Executive Airport, well northeast of downtown. So when the real Peter O. Knight rolled into view, they were expecting it to be MacDill."
      Additional source:
      The official Air Force report states that in the days prior, this crew 'flew into complex airfields, dealt with multiple mission changes and flew long mission legs with several stops each day.'
      'The flight in question originated in Rome, Italy and was assigned only one hour before flight time. It was a grueling, 12-hour flight, through six time zones, and included an in-flight re-fueling, never an easy bit of business.
      ‘Given all these factors, the pilot and copilot were not operating at full mental capacity. The Air Force medical staff found that the pilot was acting at a 79 percent cognitive effectiveness and the copilot 89 percent.

    They can definitely lighten the planes load/weight. And I believe this model can be outfitted with side-mounted rocket boosters (JATO). Specifically designed to allow for short take-offs. I believe that C-17's can be "rocket boosted" - but it would have to be modified to be able to include the option). I kind of remember this story. I think it was able to take-off just fine.

      @@josephsmith7438 I would assume it simply takes a few weeks to get the "ducks in a row". Working out what the real weight bearing capacity of the runway is. Working out what should be removed from the aircraft. Working out who will actually perform that removal. Working out how the removed items will be transported to wherever they need to go. Getting any permits/exemptions required and so-on.

  • @2ballspat
    @2ballspat 2 года назад

    They can always off-load some fuel to decrease the take off weigh... but since the plane was arriving from somewhere, it probably doesn't have full tanks. If the runway is just too short for the plane to get airborne, they can always install a jet or rocket assisted take off.

    When I was a cop at Beale, we had a Cessna land at night-after the tower closed. He just taxied through the restricted area and parked next to the U-2s. He said he thought he as at the municiple airport.
    We searched him, checked his license, then sold him some fuel and sent him on his way.
