Many years ago I was gifted one of these blankets and it’s so lovely, now I’m a crocheter it’s great to see how it’s made and can’t wait to make my own.
I am a beginner and just finished making this blanket. By following your instructions to weave in ends properly, it makes my work very neat and better looking. Thank you so much. I found it easier to use a safety pin rather than the bent tip needle to weave the chains.
This looks so easy & fun. This would be great as a scarf seeing your sample swatch. The colors are fabulous. I tend to stray from tradition Cmas colors & this can work for any holiday color palette. Thanks Marly Bird.😊💕🧶🪡
I totally agree with weaving in ends as you go. Doesn't matter what project, I always weave at end of round or row, keeps it cleaner and more professional
This is a great pattern. You do a wonderful job demonstrating your projects I agree about leaving a long tail for weaving. I am 64 years old and started crocheting and knitting since I was 7 years old. My mom taught me both. I learned not to weave my tails until the afghan is completely done. The reason I do it this way is if I find a mistake and have to rip out it's difficult to rip out where the yarn has been weaved in and I have on occasion ruined my work trying to rip out where I weaved in at. I don't mind weaving my projects. I even use yarn bobbins for the Gingham afghan I am currently working on. I have 17 bobbins hanging down. Yes they get tangled but I group the bobbins in groups so they don't tangle so bad. I just couldn't get the yarn carried right I was really frustrated and I remembered using yarn bobbins on an afghan I knitted involving multiple colors. This is my first Gingham afghan and it's done in white, lilac and med purple. I will be doing another afghan using your plaid method. You're fantastic. I love all your videos. Thank you so much. God Bless. Here is my email karendvitu@gmail.com would like to hear from you. Happy Holidays and be safe
Hi Marla. I’m a new subscriber from Tacoma, Wa. I’ve been crocheting and knitting for 40+ years with crochet as my favorite. I’ve made up my own patterns cuz I never learned how to read patterns until about 15 years ago. I was so attracted to this gorgeous pattern 🤩 I bought sone multi colored Christmas yarn on sale and will try that with plain colors mixed in as the chains and in between rows. Thank you for the helpful tips as well! Happy hooking 😃
When my ex-MIL taught me how to crochet, she taught me the 'crochet your edging over your ends' technique. I thought I was doing something wrong because they always worked back out. Then I started using her method for a portion of the ends, then weaved the ends in the opposite direction with a tapestry needle. Better, but still not clean looking. When I finally learned how to properly weave in ends I was so relieved! I do the same as you, stopping every few rows to take care of ends. I want to make this blanket for my SIL in his tartan clan colors (Scottish). I'll make a smaller version for my grandson. Thank you! Blessings all!!!!! 🌺🌺
Thanks for showing how to weave in the ends. I've always done the lazy thing and crocheted over them or just cut them off because I couldn't figure out how to weave them in on filet stitches. I "pinky-swear" to weave in my tails the RIGHT way!
Thank you so much for giving me the fringe secret. I tried the weaving with three strands instead of the chain you used (shown by other videos). And sure ‘nuf, the vertical weaving was not secure as your chain was! I will have to redo one whole end but it will be “right”. Hallelujah !!!!! It would have been so easy to “tie off “ The woven verticals if the pattern had included that. I’m thrilled I watched your video. Many thanks.
This is fantastic….your videos are so easy to follow, you are such a great teacher…….please tell me though, how do you manage when the project is much larger?? What surface do you use?? I understand when you are working a smaller example but this will be much larger when it’s a blanket??
The blanket is sooo pretty! My question is: would it be ok to chain 3 at the end instead of chaining 4? I’m thinking about making this. It is doable. Thank you for your clear instructions.
Very nice! I always weave in my ends as I go along. I made the mistake of not doing it once on a huge blanket loaded with stripes, hence a million ends! I had put it away for years and then tried to weave them in but finally gave up. I almost threw the whole thing out. I ended up tying them together and cut off the ends. It looks so ridiculous but we still enjoy the blanket. It can be dragged all over the house and relax and enjoy it. Lesson learned!! Never again! Lovely tutorial! I've never seen this before.
When weaving in the ends are you going through 2 strands? I've never been taught this If I'm seeing this right, I'm going to start doing it this way. It looks like it cuts down on bulk.😊
You're so awesome Marly, thank you for all your videos! Are you going to continue with your beginning knitting video series with your Mom? Those finally inspired me to try knitting, and I'm really enjoying it. Thanks again!
Hi, Marly. I was at Stitches West this past Friday and Saturday and found the Red Heart Yarn Booth and saw the cutest graph image of "Erick" the Sheep blanket (not to leave this subject). When will the pattern come out your Erick the Sheep Blanket will be coming out or appear on the Red Heart Website? Plus the Ladies working the Red Heart Booth gave me your Website address and discovered this beautiful plaid Xmas Blanket just now. I have a collection of Judy King's what she calls "Footy Rugs" or "Footy Blankets". I'm working on one now. I've seen different plaid blankets, but they have you weave 3 strands of loose strands of yarns (and tell you the truth, I don't care for that look). I prefer making long chains. The chains looks much better with this woven method. Love your video and subscribed with you.
Mary I am doing a royal Stewart blanket have done all the squares it says to do over and under with the chains would that be every. Row over and under,or is that one row over and the next row under,I would like your advice,Thankyou
So strange, I just checked again and it is working. Maybe I'm not using the same link as you? Can you tell me which link you are using? Here is a link: www.marlybird.com/how-to-crochet-plaid-christmas-afghan/
Marly Bird, I don't see your list of color combinations that you would like to see in the video description box, or on your blog about this blanket and video. :-(
