For anybody concerned about the longevity even after Mike’s review. I want you guys to know that I attended a private event at the On NYC Labs and got to talk to Johannes (the creator of LightSpray) for a good amount of time and he’s so confident about the material that his next project is to put this in a more accesible daily trainer. It seems LightSpray is here to stay for the long run.
No shit. This model is just a test run to see if the market is open to a 300$ shoe with crazy tech and to pay for RnD with the money of those sales. After that, obviously, if the shoes sell, and they'll definitely sell because "reviewers" are selling them like crazy, they're gonna make it the primary way of producing new models since it takes 3 minutes to make a shoe right now. They're going to fatten up their margins by not having to pay any more wages because why should they pay a salary to a hot glue spray gun? And, by making it so readily available and by patenting the tech, they'll make even more money. If ON has a public company, buy stocks now. That's it 🤷🏽♂️
Very cool tech, though for $330 I was expecting On to scan my foot and print the upper perfectly true to size (I thought that was the whole point of a printed shoe 😂)
My question is: The new Alphafly’s cost $285-$300 so why isn’t Nike getting the same treatment of skepticism and demands as On? I believe you’re paying for a new laceless technology that is almost completely carbon neutral, sustainable and made in house. Nike is making their products in china/vietnam with god knows what working conditions with 0 sustainability in mind other than maybe the box it comes in.
The tech is definitely adaptable to personalized fits in the future assuming the lasts can be easily printed. also, if the smooth interior is bothersome, the lasts could be textured, and the sprayed-on material will take up that texture.
@@Mikee013but Nike doesn’t advertise their production tech like On does. If they are making the tech the highlight of it, people would reasonably expect that as part of the shoe experience and are paying for it
Give it a few years. That very well could come to a shoe store near you at some point. Or even better a cell phone app and socks with dots plotted on them. Custome order on phone, shows up two weeks later in the mail. No more questions about fits true to size or not 😮
What if in a few years a foot scanner comes to a shoe store near you at some point. Or even better a cell phone app and socks with dots plotted on them. Custom order on phone, shows up two weeks later in the mail. No more questions about fits true to size or not 😮
Agree with some of the other comments. For $330 I would expect them to scan my foot and make the upper match me 1:1 which would be amazing. Glad there is growing competition from On though, even if I don't prefer their shoes.
I was thinking about it quite on my run after publishing this video, and I'm thinking that, depending on how marketing costs get allocated to this shoe, how R&D costs get allocated, and the relative small number of units that they will likely be making, this shoe probably costs On more than $330 to produce. If they made like 10x (or some other hypothetical amount) the shoes at the same price, maybe they'd make profit. If they made 15x, then maybe the price could come down (which isn't typically a priority for On) or there could be more customization. I did ask about customization though and how it would intersect with the rules against bespoke or custom shoes for elite athletes at World Athletics events. The On rep I was speaking with didn't have an answer for me at the time.
@@kofuzi believe it or not, they are surely making a profit on this shoe. because we already know that a flagship shoe can be sold for over 450$. it's really hard to price in the r&d because that usually has a different amortization schedule.
Amazing shoe! Weight and other parameters aside, this is a quantum leap in shoe tech. Kudos to On, for being brave to go down this path, unlike the other manufacturers just playing it safe.
I had a lot of early ON shoes because they were fun and quirky, I moved away from them because 'normal' shoes were just better. Seems ON have figured this out too.
The future I'm excited about: Going to the store. Getting your feet scanned. See what is the best fit of lets say 10 predetermined lasts. have the machine spray that last in a few minutes. I just don't think the economics of this machine can let that happen :(
@@itaymeiri5745 not only the economics but the lack of engineers that are educated about this machine’s hardware/software plays a huge role as well. Johannes had mentioned he didn’t even want to be at NYC but that he needed to be there because only 2-3 people at On know how to troubleshoot and work around the machine in case of a failure.
I can't remember if it was Drew, Bromka, or someone else that I was with in New York when we were watching the machine, but that person reminded me that localized shoe production was the promise with Adidas 3D printed shoes, too. And I feel like the industry would have to just change so much, and shoe stores would have to continually invest so much, that I'm skeptical that we are anywhere close to any brand having any machine that would be able to custom produce a shoe based on a customer's actual foot in real time.
@@kofuziAlso remember that the promise of 3D printing in general was similar. Everyone could print everything they'd ever need. Where are 3D printers now? I agree with you, probably not feasible at a store level.
fun fact: when I was in Zurich for the Mondo vs Warholm race, one of the group activities was a walking tour. And the tour company was going to take us to go see the On campus, but they didn't realize that everyone was here on a media trip with Puma. so that part of the tour was removed from the itinerary, and the tour company did a very good job of finding other last minute places for us to go to fill up the tour schedule.
Don't get me wrong the upper and the process they're using to make it looks cool but as soon as I saw the shoe in the thumbnail...what brought me here was what the middle was going to be like. I don't buy shoes for the upper, but rather the missile experience. The upper is a nice icing and as long as its got a good lockdown, I couldn't careless. What I care about is what I'm going to be landing on with each strikes/steps and will it be as wonderful as the beautiful design of the shoe.
I'm pretty much the same. An upper can ruin a shoe, but it usually isn't a selling feature for me. And just like I thought the lightness of the foam in the Evo 1 was it's killer feature, I think the lightness of the LS (which is possible because of this upper) is really quite impressive.
Their loops should be on the mid for compression feels during transition- they can keep the stack height and firm foam. I know they have engineers for that but it seems like theyve considered bounce for walking more.
As much as I want to love this. We've all had countless pairs of running shoes. Adjusting laces is a necessity. There is close to 0 chance this will maintain lockdown security as the shoe racks miles. Undoubtedly another feather in ON's cap but the shoe will be resigned to "Performance Athleisure", which, let's be honest, ON specialise in.
Great video 🙌🏽, thank you. Would love to try them but the price 😱. May be more tempted with the little talked about but crazy light 361 miro nude 110g 😮.
Interesting shoe and great direction ON is taking. Nevertheless I got hard times liking the cloudeclipse and cloudsurfer next I got. They both are cushioned but still firmer. The sizing is so different, cloudeclipse runs wide and long. The speedboard is annoying and outsole is collecting stones and dirt a lot.
It all looks amazing. This is how the future is built. However, I am keeping a close eye on long-term durability. The fact that it will be on spikes, in my opinion, does not necessarily mean that it will be durable during longer use. Elite can replace these spikes whenever they want, so the only thing that is really known for now is that you can use this material hard. How long? We'll see, I keep my fingers crossed!
I will concede that the use of the material in a spike is not direct proof that the material has durability, but I think we should also recognize that there is no direct proof one way or the other (otherwise we would just refer to that longevity data). stay tuned for the 100 mile review.
Ventilation & moisture management? Does ON have anything to say about how the shoe handles the environment, cold & heat, foot swelling, etc? I noticed you splashed in some puddles in the Cloud Surfer scenes but not this shoe...
I wouldn't read too much into the splashing. I can't control the weather. If there's puddles, I'll run through them. If there aren't, I won't hold a review video in the hopes that some might arise.
the foam is pebax that is partially bio-based. I would anticipate that the shoe handles cold temperatures as well as other pebax compounds (I want to call this a bio pebax, but bio pebax is a trade name and there must be a reason why On doesn't use that phrase).
Hey! Will there be a buyer's guide coming out in the next couple weeks before Thanksgiving Shopping? Also, I just noticed you cracked 200k. Congratulations!

Well, most of us have experienced the phenomenon when it’s lacking, whether you had heard that word or not. When a shoe feels like your foot is wallowing around in a shoe in any way instead of feeling like an extension of your foot (ideally, you’re not thinking at all about the shoe when things fit right), it’s very frustrating. Everyone’s foot is different in relation to every model of shoe. When too many runners complain of the same thing--either a lacing system that’s not cinching securely, or a heel that too many runners tend to slide out of too easily to give 2 examples--then that shoe may have a flaw or at least weakness in that department.
