Hello sr after that time can you tell me how it had been this guitar regarding to playability, sound and electronics? I'm considering buying this one this week.
Ordering one Friday. Great video, I was curious about the pick ups. I generally use Dimarzio on my 6 strings. Your review and video gave me a little confidence in that I might not need to replace the Quantums. Thank you very much.
Colton Owen Duncan Excellent! Yes this guitar is beast and very well built and designed. Quantum pickups were not bad at all! If you change pickups for real high gain Amps I recommend Seymour Duncan Omega pickup for the bridge.
I'm very impressed with the Quantum pickups. The clarity and harmonic overtones are out of this world for stock pickups. I honestly don't think I would change the pickups. I wouldn't do a hipshot because the holes do not align with the bridge that I would replace it. I would install locking tuners and graphtech string saver saddles instead of replacing the bridge. Hell, I'm blown away by this guitar as a whole and I own a Carvin DC 727.
Got this one as a backup for my Ibanez Prestige. I must say this is a great axe. Not as well-built and luxury as the Prestige but this is a super bang for the buck nonetheless. And it looks superhot too.
Absolutely agree! I’ve had mine over 3 years. Of course I’ve added CTS pots, Capacitors, and Alpha Omega humbuckers from Seymour Duncan. Thing is pure fire for the value and feels like my higher end guitars all day.
Hello mate, great review. I have one question as a beginner im stuck between choosing Schecter Demon 6 and this RGA42. Do you have any experience with Schecter guitars and could you give me a little hint?
Mad King What’s up my friend. Yes Schecter makes amazing guitars too, I played them for years and at one point owned 4 of them. My favorite was the Schecter Blackjack series. It’s all about comfort and feel though. Schecter is very similar in my opinion to ESP Ltd and Ibanez is going to be a bit lighter and definitely has a faster, thinner neck, and more flat fret board. That’s great for fast leads and rhythm work. Try them and see what works best for you. Thank you for enjoying this guitar review! I look forward to hearing which one you will choose. 🤝🎶🔥
I own this guitar, and 3 Schecters, and though this is an awesome guitar, but the schecters win hands down in the QC department. I also owned a $1600 Ibanez Japanese made, and it had great QC, but no better than a $500 schecter. You can't go wrong with either. Play both if you can.
Dang. I was going to get the Jem jr. But wasn't 100% on if I wanted to get it or not. Good thing I keep looking at other cheaper options. This sounds fuckin meannnnnnn. So I'm sold! Sick riffs dude! \m/
Thank you for such kind words brother. I’m glad you like the riffs. I’m always amazed with Ibanez. The RGA line is just killer and they are great platforms for basic mods too. I absolutely love this guitar. 🤘
I grabbed one at SamAsh locally for $300 with 1 tiny mark. Mine is the flamey maple cap one with yellowish burst. All 12 polepieces have Allen head screws.... REALLY nice adjustability string to string balance. 5 -way switch of 2 HBs.... think about it
Eric Nessler Thank you! I’ve since replaced the Quantum’s with Seymour Duncan Alpha & Omega bridge. Height to me is a personal preference so to be honest I don’t know the measurements but it took about an hour to adjust to where the tone was perfect to my ear. If it helps the neck pick up is about a quarter flush with the body whereas the bridge is about half way exposed above the body. You don’t want it to high as the gauge of strings differ in some of my music and tuning changes can get a magnetic pull from strings. 🤝
@@AngryTonesRiffClips I watched your video 3 times to be honest ! :D btw love how you play, one day I would be half way through ^^ I was buying a guitar today and couldn't make a final decision, but I'm choosing an Ibanez RGA 42FM. I don't know why I didn't ask you straight away ! In video when you play some heavy stuff ( 3:30 ) I hear how loud strings are. Is it really that loud or the video makes it like that? Thanks a lot for your answer it would help me so much.
Astro This guitar has excellent tone and resonance however I’m also playing at slightly lower volume level so the Rode microphone may be picking up open strings.
Great review. So, would you say that it is worth getting the Iron label RGA when compared to the value at this price point? I'm on the fence between buying this one now or saving up. I would really like to upgrade the bridge to a hipshot HM, but that can't be done on the RGA42 without drilling more holes in the body. So, what's your opinion on that?
Set Abominae I say go with what feels right for you. The bridge on this guitar works perfectly fine and actually works well with the tones of mahogany. I replaced the bridge humbucker for a Custom shop Seymour Duncan Omega pickup being that I needed a much tighter bass and higher midrange gain response. Iron label or not most RGA series are all fantastic Indonesian builds. Go for what feels good to play!
Greg Campbell Thanks for the feedback. I've played this RGA at the local shop and it had me coming back for more. I'm a JB fan. So if I replaced the bridge it would be with that or a black winter. I'm pretty happy with the stock bridge pickup. It's very well balanced. However I wouldn't swap the neck pup for an air Norton or something with a little more color. In the mean time, I'll just swap the tuners for the gold and black Planet Waves locking set and maybe install a graph Tech ghost piezo system. Ibanez really pulled no punches with this guitar. For the price it is a superior build with great style. This is my favorite Ibanez since the S520ex. Thanks for the demo buddy.
Yeah man sounds great and looks great, Greg im wanting to learn how to play so im looking at guitars and this does have some nice value I mean the woods are perfect the finish is sweet and those frets are insane! So what if I wanted like a classic rock sound and I put like a JB & 59 in this would it work and sound more classic rock ? Thanks David!!!
David trueslayor Yes Sir! It’s a extremely well built guitar! Now for a classic rock tone I highly recommend the “whole lotta” Humbucker from Seymour Duncan the JB is an excellent choice too with 59 neck but it’s a very hot pickup for metal too, which is why I recommend more of a PAF Tone JB is what Dave Mustaine used on many early Megadeth albums. I’d even suggest the Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Humbucker that ones phenomenal too! Hope this helps!
very helpful...but will you help me to make a choice out of the two model... RGA42FM and SA260FM...which one to go for..My genre is rock and metal...in RGA I think there is no provision for tremolo attachment.... please reply
@@AngryTonesRiffClips Thanks for your reply man...actually my preference is also RGA42FM as it has 2 quantum humbuckers but only one thing what is bothering to me is about the bridge it has..no tremolo attachment...atleast T102...or else in future I have to go for custom bridge...tough I am not sure will it be a good idea or not..and that why the reason I am asking all of you guys out there...i am in dilemma
Hey, a beginner guitar player here! Love your playing! I am stuck between choosing Ibanez RGA42 FM and the RG421AHM. I love playing classic rock as well as some metal riffs. Could you give some advice on this matter?
Saph K Hey there, first off Thank you for enjoying my playing, that’s a huge compliment to say you loved it! Second yes the guitars are both fantastic however for metal playing I chose the RGA42FM over the 421AHM for these reasons: AHM is a Ash body sometimes to twangy, also has pickup rings going around them I prefer direct body mounting, then there’s the 42FM which has Mahogany body with direct mounting pickups and its slightly heavier in weight which gives it a strong chug in the low end. Enjoy your new guitar. I’d love to hear which direction you go.
Hades Eye It’s an unbelievably nice build for the money. I love this guitar. I’ve since modded mine but it’s actually a very very well made guitar. “Cheap” price but not cheap craftsmanship by any means. 🤝💙🔥 Glad you like the heavy tones.
@@AngryTonesRiffClips If I will swap pups then maybe to DiMarzio's Evolution or Seymour Duncan's Black Winter. Where former are cheaper, latter are just metal magic. Cheers from Poland!
@@AngryTonesRiffClips Thanks for the info. I will check them out. I know it's impossible to have 100% versatile axe, but I need something that could handle tones from Dokken, up to Abbath's Harvest Pyre. Recently I discovered Beast in Black. If someone would tell me that I will listen to disco metal, where Bee Gees meets power metal I would nock myself in a forehead, teeling him that he must be crazy.
sounds good but im deaf in one ear so i have to turn up the treble to adjust for the mids coming in not saying its bad just saying i have this guitar and its awesome for the price, but i did put emg pick ups and now its a whole new beast
Awesome riffs, dude! I just bought this guitar today. If you said it, I didn't hear, so apologies, but what kind of amp are you using? Right now I only have a peavey Vypyr. Honestly? The only distortion option I like on it is "B kat," has more of an old school metal sound to me. Most of the others are just noisy. I can't wait to play this!!
Thanks brother! Yes the amp is an Orange Dark Terror with a Mooer 001 preamp running into the effects loop return power amp section. Enjoy it’s a killer guitar for the money 100%!!
I got mine in Dragon Eye Finish, and its great but Im planning to change the pickups. I often play lamb of god, Disturbed and pantera songs, what pickup do you suggest? Im just planning to replace the Bridge pup. Thankyou in advance, and nice review btw.
INON CARREON wonderful guitar and those bands you enjoy are absolutely amazing! My advice to you would be a Seymour Duncan SH-14 custom Alnico 5 bridge and a 59 jazz in the neck. This is an extremely versatile combination that covers all spectrums of Metal! 59 neck for all those beautiful solos that just sustain for days and that custom 5 bridge for metal chugs from hell that are tight, articulate, and sound pissed! Thank you for enjoying this video 🙂
Loved your feedback sir, so detailed. Thankyou so much for the suggestion. And yes this guitar is absolutely worth the price. Thankyou so much and looking for your upcoming videos. Cheers from manila 🍻
I have the older version of this guitar with the inverted headstock. I love guitar and the way it plays. I'm not really into the pickups but I'm also used to play g active emgs. Probably going to switch the pickups to DiMarzio Illuminators.
Timothy Russell thank you! Yes DiMarzio makes great pickups. I’ve always preferred a very aggressive tone with lots of attack and a tight bass response. So naturally a Custom Shop Seymour Duncan Omega was installed for this guitar.
As 2020 is approaching, they've discontinued this guitar. :( Ibanez must be readying for NAMM 2020 inventory maybe but yeah I think I would have bought this RGA42FM if I hadn't landed my hands on a Jackson Kelly X-series first.
How was the fretwork when you got it? Pups seem decent enough, I am used to playing my 2550z prestige(dimarzio/ibz). I really want a hardtail RG but don't feel like paying for a 652fx. That blue finish looks killer too.
Daniel Berglund Fret on mine were absolutely perfect. I liked these stock pickups a lot however Seymour Duncan Omega bridge pickup is my favorite for high Gain Tube Tone, with that extremely articulate low end and upper midrange bite. Get one it’s a great guitar for a great price made very well! Few extra mods will put it up there with any $800-$1000 Ibanez! For way less 🤟🙌🎸🎶🤝
I am considering this to be my second guitar. Is it good value for somewhat of a beginner? I currently have a Cort CR100, fantastic value LP style guitar, but I'm looking for something new - although I figured a Floyd Rose floating bridge would be overkill for me. (I play in several different tunings also.) Are the lower frets easily accessible? Or should I just go for something with EMGs? I saw affordable Corts with active pickups. I play lots of metal sooo yeah.
@@AngryTonesRiffClips I'm just so confused because I'm not exactly rich and I want to buy the perfect guitar with little money lol, but not even I know what's best for me right now. Thanks for the swift response and sorry for the pointless rant in my original comment haha, keep on rockin'! \m/
Thanks for your review. I have just bought this phenomenal guitar and Im thinking of buying 81/85 emg pickups for it. It is easy to install them? Do I have to solder them? As you see I am a begginer in all this. Thanks!
kraze9889 Nice!!! Thank you, much appreciated your kind words! Actually EMG pickups may sound thin as the Quantum pickups really sound phenomenal and tight with great articulate attack! Aman Khan Great question Aman! Go with what feels right first! Nobody wants to play an uncomfortable guitar. I prefer Ibanez because I like Mahogany over Basswood. Both are great companies. Tone with Ibanez rga42fm has a lot to do with Amplifier of course but this video your hearing it’s quantum pickups too. Sterling uses active type pickups. Hope this helps! They are both great guitars, feeling is everything.
Greg Campbell ANGRY TONES Sir thankyou for the suggestion. The ibanez is pretty comfortable and so is the sterling but this ibanez is just the most beautiful thing ive seen in this range whereas the sterling is very versatile in terms of clean tones too. But i would want you to suggest me as this is my only guitar. And i want a guitar that completes everything that i need.
Aman Khan Ibanez rga42fm all the way! You can always modify it too down the road. It’s a great platform for mods and feels great! I don’t get paid to say that either lol! I’m not endorsed by Ibanez yet.

Ayoung Jamir Absolutely! Professional guitarist and intermediate it’s an excellent build and for the more seasoned pro just a few mods turned mine into a better beast! Thank you for your great question! 🤝
Cool review, dude. I bought one, too. It had very bad setup and needed a little work on the nut. Otherwise it's great guitar, a lot of fun. What strings and tuning are you using ? Mine does not sound that huge, but probably just because of my Ernie Ball 9s...
Cooper11 Thank you! I’m tuned to C# and using 10-46 NYXL strings. Tone is huge and of course everyone has their own technique but the amps Eq definitely helps the total overall sound which is a Orange Dark Terror with a Mooer diezel hagan Preamp Pedal set to bass=5 midrange=6.5 treble=6 Gain=50% 🙂
Cooper11 No problem sir!!! Keep jamming and a secret to huge tone and monster rhythm tones Don’t scoop the mids! Lots of Metal has a scooped Sound because it’s usually compressed in studios but I use just enough bass on MY amp around 6 with mids at a pinch past noon and treble is at 7.5 to drive it to get that bite in the chords. Cheers and hopefully this helps YOU achieve a great tone to experiment with.

Mine will be here day after tomorrow so stoked!!!
Seth Ride excellent you’ll love it!
@@AngryTonesRiffClips Thank you for such a nice and detailed answer :) Still a hard choice but I will let you know which one i bought!
Great guitar and demo. Thanks
🤘😈🤘🤝
I wanna hear you play the drums over those riffs! 🙏🏼🐺🇺🇸
That’s what I do in the home studio all day haha! At least when I’m writing and recording. 🤘
Is that jatoba or rosewood fingerboard? Nice playing btw
Assasin GSY Jatoba fretboard. Feels great similar too a ebony feel with the look and vibe of rosewood.
Im really scared to buy this guitar because in some other videos the jatoba fingerboard looks way different and i want the guitar to look like yours
Assasin GSY I bought mine through Sweetwater.com there were about 7 to choose from that way body and neck are your favorite choice.
I grabbed one at SamAsh locally for $300 with 1 tiny mark. Mine is the flamey maple cap one with yellowish burst. All 12 polepieces have Allen head screws.... REALLY nice adjustability string to string balance. 5 -way switch of 2 HBs.... think about it
Doug H. in VA Nice!
Greg, your tone sounds fantastic. My Quantums sound a bit muddy, do you know where your pickup height was set un-fretted?
Eric Nessler Thank you! I’ve since replaced the Quantum’s with Seymour Duncan Alpha & Omega bridge. Height to me is a personal preference so to be honest I don’t know the measurements but it took about an hour to adjust to where the tone was perfect to my ear. If it helps the neck pick up is about a quarter flush with the body whereas the bridge is about half way exposed above the body. You don’t want it to high as the gauge of strings differ in some of my music and tuning changes can get a magnetic pull from strings. 🤝
great video ! what is that thing at the top of guitar across the strings?
Astro Thank you! That is a fret wrap by Gruv Gear. Excellent for cutting out string noise or annoying overtones at the neck.
Subhajyoti Goswami RGA42FM All day man! Perfect for Metal 100% Thank you.
Sounds great to me!
Jackon J Thank You
Hey, a beginner guitar player here!
@@AngryTonesRiffClips Thank you so much for your reply! I will probably go with RGA42 FM then. Thanks for your kind advice!
Saph K No problem my friend. Enjoy and take time to have fun and sculpt your own great tones and shred! 🎶🎵💜
I was thinking about a cheapo and this one looked perfect, but hey those tones are sick for the money.
Hades Eye I’m using Seymour Duncan Omega bridge Humbucker and Dimarzio Neck
Crisp and Bright Bite on that pickup. Definitely not muddy. Clarity... bite.
Great review! Do you know how much it weights the guitar? Thank you.
Thank you! Yes my Ibanez RGA42FM weighs 7lbs 13oz
@@AngryTonesRiffClips Thank you!
What tuning were you using in this video? Sick vid man I picked one up at a local shop and fell in love.
Messy Thank You! That’s awesome! Yes these are amazing guitars from Ibanez for sure. Tuning in that video is dropped C#
I like the Quantums in my RG6003
I want one. I bet it's a tune locked piece of art. Like no issues.
I watched that video too. I've listen to a lot of pickup demos and I've settled on the illuminator for my bridge and liquifire for the neck
FACTORY TUNNING PLEASE?
Factory tuning was E standard. I’m playing in Drop C# 🤘
What power amp would you recomend for this guitar?
Depends on what style of music you play. I love using my Randall Diavlo amplifier. 🤘
killer tone

Joey Hardy Thanks man! You should they are extremely well made and the feel, balance, and quality overall is top notch for the value. I love mine! 🤘🤝🤘
Holy you can play👍👍👍
Thank you so much! Blake I really appreciate your kind words brother. 🤘
Awesome demo! I got the same one recently 😊
Thank you! Guitar is a ripper for sure!
As 2020 is approaching, they've discontinued this guitar. :( Ibanez must be readying for NAMM 2020 inventory maybe but yeah I think I would have bought this RGA42FM if I hadn't landed my hands on a Jackson Kelly X-series first.
Band-Maid Sheep It’s definitely a gorgeous build and it plays perfectly. Enjoy your Jackson Kelly.
It's still being offered for sale new all over the internet
How was the fretwork when you got it? Pups seem decent enough, I am used to playing my 2550z prestige(dimarzio/ibz). I really want a hardtail RG but don't feel like paying for a 652fx. That blue finish looks killer too.
So it's either this rga42fm or a rg421
Daniel Berglund Fret on mine were absolutely perfect. I liked these stock pickups a lot however Seymour Duncan Omega bridge pickup is my favorite for high Gain Tube Tone, with that extremely articulate low end and upper midrange bite. Get one it’s a great guitar for a great price made very well! Few extra mods will put it up there with any $800-$1000 Ibanez! For way less 🤟🙌🎸🎶🤝
Daniel Berglund RGA42FM All the way 🤟
Bought one yesterday :) Will upgrade bridge pup later
Daniel Berglund 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
I am considering this to be my second guitar. Is it good value for somewhat of a beginner? I currently have a Cort CR100, fantastic value LP style guitar, but I'm looking for something new - although I figured a Floyd Rose floating bridge would be overkill for me. (I play in several different tunings also.) Are the lower frets easily accessible?
Or should I just go for something with EMGs? I saw affordable Corts with active pickups. I play lots of metal sooo yeah.
gabrocki Ibanez rga42fm is a great guitar from an excellent company. I would get what feels right for you.
@@AngryTonesRiffClips I'm just so confused because I'm not exactly rich and I want to buy the perfect guitar with little money lol, but not even I know what's best for me right now. Thanks for the swift response and sorry for the pointless rant in my original comment haha, keep on rockin'! \m/
are you going through the effects loop with the mooer pedal or through the front end?
Wild NickVentures Effects loop “Return Only” this Pedal is a Preamp not Designed at all to push the front. Only to push the power amp.
Greg Campbell ANGRY TONES that's what I thought but wanted to make sure as this sounds killer. great review. cheers.
Wild NickVentures Thank you! Means a lot!
If you switch them out I’d personally recommend the Seymour Duncan Alpha & Omega set. I’ve thrown those in mine and they are unbelievable too! Cheers from Nashville 🔥🤝🔥

I am stuck at these two options now. And i am about to buy my guitar tomorrow. So should i go for this one or for the sterling axis?
Please help.
Hey, how many of these you sold since last time we spoke (march maybe)?
Ibanez should pay you for it.
I have no idea haha! That’d definitely be awesome though! I absolutely love @ibanezguitars they are definitely some of the best! Thank you for the kind words. 🤘
What do you call that strap on the neck on the guitar?
3rd World Gamer Fret Wrap by Gruv Gear 🤟
Great job 6k views is a lot :)
Geek Gaming Thank you. Yeah it’s definitely pretty Rad! 🙏 ❤️🎶🤟
This guitar can be tuned in Drop C without modifications?
Aless Yep! All you gotta do is make sure it’s set up and intonation can handle drop C. No mods necessary.
What is that thing exactly that yu got up the top to muffle it or whatever it is yr doing?, also did you order this by post or did you go in store and by it?
Sam Daniele that is a Fretwrap by Gruvgear it helps cancel out unwanted string noise at the headstock. I purchased it through sweetwater.
Thanks..I was wondering same thing
Will this guitar neck good for small hands ? Like fender neck
Ayoung Jamir absolutely! It should be fine it’s a very fast neck, thin C shape with a very smooth maple finish it’s great. 🎸🔥🤝

Nice reviewand tunes! Do you know what the fretboard material is?
Anton Holm Thank you! Yes fretboard is made ofJatoba wood. It’s an exotic wood otherwise known as Brazilian Cherry.
@@AngryTonesRiffClips Thank you! Are you supposed to treat it the same way as a rosewood fretboard? (Conditioning etc)
I am thinking about getting this soon do you think this is fine for playing in B Standard with fast paced tremolo picking and heavy riffs? I am talking about stuff like what Carcass plays.
3rd World Gamer Absolutely! Just set it up and have the intonation properly done to handle your tuning preferences.
great guitar!
Владимир Васин 🤝🎸🔥
How would you compare this to a rg in tone
It is an RG It’s an RGA42FM tone is fantastic for a mahogany body with jotoba fretboard and ceramic pickup set from quantum.
@@AngryTonesRiffClips I thought this was rosewood?
Dan A They originally were rosewood fretboards but switched to Jotoba which is extremely similar in most characteristics.
hey what is that white guitar behind you?
StreetKing4009 that guitar is a 2014 Washburn Solar guitar. Prototype first run from the original Ola Englund signature series guitars.
Kewl thanks I'm a big fan of white guitar's and burst color's I've been looking for a new guitar. RUclips never let's me down on info lol

Hi! Are those stainless steel frets?
Games I think so, plays fantastic too, however Ibanez website doesn’t clarify if they are stainless or not.
No way in hell. It's a lot of guitar for the money though

Hey, nice shirt
Yeah, I'll experiment... Thanks for inspiration :-)
