MrOlliguitar Huh. Puppets is hard? Now that I’ve been playing for a couple more years I never noticed puppets was a bit difficult. I’m sure I struggled when I was learning it way back, which makes sense. Or you can just learn the whole master of puppets album, solos and all, it helped me get my down picking to the point where it was second nature, and got me into soloing way back. I do believe a more difficult riff would be battery or fight fire with Fire. But that doesn’t matter, I still have a lot more to learn, I would say i still suck.

To anyone saying it’ll sound like a fart or a bass lol it would actually be (basically) 8 string tuning and most of the songs would still sound great. @@99shredder Tosin abasi 8 strings but standard E big difference. Riff makes music heavy not the downtuning.
3:10 it's crazy how when you palm-mute those 2 bottom strings, you could almost swear it's drop A. Adding the lowest note of the power chord doesn't mean a huge difference. So deathcore in E standard is totally possible.
Yeah, it's an inverted power chord, the fifth and the root are switched. In standard, the root note would be on the A string, therefore it's equivalent to a standard powerchord with an E string tuned down to A. My favourite example is Sylosis - Servitude, check it out.

well i didn't mean EVERYTHING is in standard E. but that wasn't clear in my original comment lol
still, crazy to think about that heaviness in that turning haha
As the early Winds or Plague albums are in E standard they like to do 4th chords on the low E and A strings so it’s like doing a power chord on a 7 string but the 7th string isn’t there. Give a tight heavy and “lower than E” sound cause technically you can make it go down to an A sound
Imagine knowing 70 riffs but end up playing smoke on the water at a guitar store
That‘s a sad Moment
I hate it man, its a plague for us intermediates lol

6:16 Anything off of Arise could be in this list. I remember picking up tabs to learn "Desperate Cry" and thinking... "this is in standard?!"
Sylosis, such an underrated band. SO glad to see them in a video.
I think the thing with E standard is that its heavy riffs always sound really tight.
My favorite riff by the way will always be from Heir Apparent. That riff just annihilates me every time I listen to it.
Tight is the perfect way to describe it- if you watch rob scallon's 12 string capo metal video you'll hear the same thing but to an extreme
@@shanepartridge2744 i describe it as tight and Harsh
Exactly what i thought after tuning my guitar to standard for the first time in years, this sounds tight af.
Tbf he didn't play it right way
Chunky riffs all day
43% burned is the #1 for me on this whole list. It just hits in such a particular way
I've come to the conclusion that every possible riff has already been written. Anything I "write" now will just be plagiarism.
That’s how I felt once! You eventually pass that plateau if you broaden your horizons and learn new songs in new styles you didn’t know before :)
Gotta write in unconvention time sigs and weird scales. Tony Iommi alone has devesitated our chances at original riffs
That is the unfortunate reality. Imagine how many songs are there in this world rn from the beginning? Im pretty sure someone already did it somewhere. BUT, not original does not mean you can't be different.
ehhh to a degree, but music is art just like painting. Just because someone else discovered the colour blue doesn’t mean you cant use the colour blue
Remember what you hear in your head no one else does .you could take the same exact chords and it will sound completely different due to your right hand rhythm and the way you think if that makes sense lol.
This guy finally got into Sylosis 😭😍 and he knows after lifeless years...their best one
Aha yeah they're awesome!

Power Trip...
I knew this dude in high school that played guitar and he was mostly into Metallica, Floyd, Zeppelin, etc but he always said that Dillinger riff was insane. He must have asked me if I had heard that song at least 4 times in a single semester
The question is. Are the bands making music for guitar players or for people in general? Cause literally the only people who cares about tuning are the guitar players.
The fact Live and Learn is in this just shows how great Nik is 🤘
Yes! I got so hyped when I heard live and learn.
Crush 40 SA1 & 2 both kick some serious ass
ngl open your heart would've been a better pick imo, but crush 40 slaps either way
Aha thank you! I was debating putting it on here since it's not a super "heavy" riff but something about it just gives you a rush of energy
Nik Nocturnal yeah I get what you mean! Glad you put it on, great video!
Sylosis are amazing at making E standard sound just as heavy as any drop tuning, even thought it’s more about the riff then the tubing anyways. Don’t forget Opeth who I also think make amazing E Standard death metal riffs when everyone else in death metal at the time would downtune no matter what
Yeah OPETH and Sylosis absolutely dominated this for me
Sylosis tone fits damn too well with E standard tuning. That's Josh Midleton's clarity sound that I love so much in his heavy riffs
Dropping to drop C and below to get the muddy sound would ruin that - and therefore the riffs
Opeths heir apparent is the heaviest song ever wrote in E standard imo
Sylosis kills standard tuning!!! I was just waiting to see that riff from Empyreal and you didn't disappoint!! Glad to see they got a good amount of love on here. Winds of Plague too! And of course, Dillinger!!! E standard can def be heavy af! I will forever love Eb standard though, one of my favorite tunings. That half step under just hits different, I can thank Dime for that.
Something I never considered with these videos is how much you have to program drums for every fucking riff. Like holy shit that’s dedication.

*Domination breakdown intensifies*
I love the weird look when you're playing the easy riffs that still sound badass in pantera and dillinger escape plan. And the stuff that has you stretching along the fretboard rather than just hitting powerchords is great. All the math metal stuff kinda belongs on its own. It's beyond heavy, where few men dare tread.
There was this local band “the Viking” and they played all in E standard and they were fucking brutal. When I found that out I was thoroughly impressed
This isn't standard but Cattle Decapitation is only tuned to Eb which is pretty damn impressive. Definitely a worthy mention.
THE heaviness is in the tone, fingers and the amount of *CHUG!* and technical grooviness that comes into the riffs. And that’s just my statement.
Lower tunings can help in the chug tho tbf
Also drums
@@No1WillMakeItOutAlive i think he meant chugs* plural cause it seems like the only way to truly get heavy with E riffs is to have lots of fast tight chugs in polyrhythmic patterns jumping back and forth between that and dissonance on the highs
Psyfonify ya I agree, like 43% burnt. Panic chords don’t need that low of chugs to hit hard
@@No1WillMakeItOutAlive or like some of the groovier gojira riffs that chug an inverted power chord on the bottom two strings which would sound just as chunky and menacing in E if played with such brutal precision and groove as them

*First song starts*
It isn’t in the pitch of a riff, it’s in it’s in a riff’s intervals. A riff will always sound roughly the same in standard on a six string as it did in standard on a seven string. You don’t need drop B. You just need drop D. The riff to Panic Attack (Dream Theater) is always crazy heavy and fast, whether in A# standard (tuning in the original version) or in E standard.
yep but lower tunings does help make it heavier (but not always)
@@noobguitarist843 they perhaps add nuance (which does factor into heaviness, a riff will basically be heavy until you fully understand it, and have burnt out on it), and bring it closer to the bass range. It's inconsistent, i'd say. I kinda agree with you. I should have clarified: It's _mostly_ in the intervals of a riff, more so than in the pitch.
