    SPOILER WARNING!
I completely agree about the growth of the brother's character. He was definitely my least favorite, but then I found myself getting emotional for all his parts at the end and it was a surprise to me.
I rooted for the older sister. I liked her filter free way of speaking. She said some embarrassing things out loud, but she ended up being a great communicator and had some brave vulnerable moments.
I wanted a more satisfying ending, but if it ended happily for everyone I probably wouldn't like that either. My Mister had a satisfying ending without being over the top. I ended My Liberation Notes still sort of concerned for everyone.

I absolutely LOVED how the writer emphasized that his body knows where he is meant to be better than he does and how he stumbles into the funeral home lecture and decides to stay. I actually teared up.

    *SPOILERS (Maybe)*
I did really like My Liberation Notes. It had such good life lessons. It was really neat seeing how the characters were talking about their struggles and how they wanted to take action to fix it (to be "liberated"). They could have kept playing the blame game, but through their liberation process they realized that all they could really do was change themselves and their outlook on it. The title of the show is perfect because finding Liberation is not something that happens all at once. It's a journey of identifying and perseverance to keep working through it. Identifying your struggles and finding the root cause is a hard thing to do. Acceptance and taking action to make things better is even harder. The show showing the character's journey on that was so refreshing and realistic.
I love how all the siblings would talk about things that most people I think would be ashamed and sometimes embarrassed to admit. For me, the various confessions that both sisters would talk about were funny and yet so relatable. They would have so many moments where I couldn't believe they said certain things, but I would next have admiration and appreciation that they would voice what their thoughts were and would be honest with themselves. There were a lot of "I get that" type moments.
By the way, My Mister is still my favorite, but there were so many good thought provoking things that came out of My Liberation Notes for me and I am so happy I watched it.

    SPOILERS
I really enjoyed My Liberation Notes. It takes the spot as my favorite drama of the year so far (beating 2521). Not as good as My Mister, but it's definitely up there.
I think Seon Seok Koo sums up this drama pretty well, "realistic yet poetic". These are the two main focal points that keep this drama engaging and interesting for the audience.
Everything about this drama feels so realistic to the point that it's almost like a documentary. Every line, every dialogue, and every character is very "ordinary" and relatable. The way they talk to each other, or even the way they ignore each other. Even the repeating clothes that they wear just add more to the realism. BUT, that isn't enough to make a good drama. In the midst of all this realness must hide the beauty. May it be through the visuals or the lines, everything about MLN feels so beautiful and poetic. Symbolisms and metaphors can be found in almost every episode. Some of the lines in this show are just SO deep, that it's honestly breathtaking. They even break the laws of physics and add CGI in some scenes just for metaphor's sake. That's how poetic this drama is.
But, I think this is exactly the biggest problem that MLN has for some people. It relies way too much on beauty and relatability, and not much on tension and emotional moments. I think the only time that I actually cried in this drama was in episode 13, and that's about it. Nothing suspenseful as well; the whole mafia type thing (not really mafia but you know what I mean) didn't really have anything to offer. This is how MLN falls short compared to My Mister. My Mister excels in all four of these aspects (relatability, beauty, suspense, and emotional moments), which is why many people consider it a masterpiece.
But then again, this is also what makes MLN such a unique drama. Park Hae Young focusing on these two points alone was definitely intentional, and she went all OUT with it. It's a risky move, which we can tell with some people calling this drama "boring" or "depressing" (which I can definitely understand). But for those who got it and liked the style, it hits SO HARD. I am genuinely obsessed with this drama. I literally re-watched the show as soon as I finished it, and it feels amazing. For these reasons, MLN is in my top five dramas of all time.

    • @MarieMaurerKdramaReview
      @MarieMaurerKdramaReview  2 года назад +4

I completely agree that MLN lacked tension. I really liked the mafia scenes and found them super satisfying- probably because we had been teased about it for so long. I do wish Gu had left again in the end because the work is not healthy for him. Him still working there AND drinking in the end was sad, but realistic. I only felt satisfied by his story because he opens up so much. The fact that he was talking and opening up so much about his feelings was the 'win' of his arch for me.
      -
Personally I dont view this series as depressing at all. Boring- yes in the middle. I found the characters struggles so relatable that it wasnt depressing, rather confirming if that makes any sense haha. A human story about the life struggles and how we are all going through it together.

    Spoiler Warning!
My main gripe with this series is Gu’s background, both structure and pacing wise. Alot happened that I personally couldn’t care less about, it had so much promise at the beginning because of how secretive it was and how little they revealed every other episode. But the lack of believability behind their actions took me out of immersion multiple times, many of the supporting cast does not move or progress at all until the main cast are ready for another obstacle or “realization” in their own actions told in their dialogue before shown (a trend they stuck to). Some support characters suddenly have a story of their own to tell after only exchanging dialogue in order to set up the leads’ monologues for several episodes straight. Some reactions to these deep exchanges were believable, many tolerated it in situations where it wasn’t naturally brought out for the sake of progression .
Episodes 8-11 were easily the worst for me, the pacing dramatically picked up in terms of defining moments and reveals surrounding them, but so sudden with little to no explanation when needed.
Nonetheless , such a great experience overall, the atmosphere, meaningful writing, astounding performances , beautiful Ost. So many aspects up for praise with this drama that makes its flaws more than worth sitting through. Great review! Such a timely upload as well when i was craving more thoughts.

    (Spoilers)
I absolutely loved this show. The only con for me would be the mothers death. I feel like it was rushed a bit. But thats all, every character was amazing and the arcs were amazingly written. For me the female lead was my favorite character because she was so relatable to me. Her quotes stuck with me so much. One quote was: ”네가 좋아하는 것 같은 사람들도 가만히 생각해보면 다 불편한 구석히 있어요. 진찌로 좋아하는 사람이 아무도 없어요. 혹시 그게 네가 점점 조용히 지쳐가는 이유 아닐까?, 늘 혼지라는 느낌에 시달리고 버려진 느낌에 시달리는 이유 아닐까?“ Its a long quote but it stuck with me bc it was so relatable for me. But she is basically talking about how she never had someone that she felt truly comfortable with or that she truly liked and thats why she is always exhausted and that the feeling of loneliness and abandonment tormented her. As an introvert I could really relate. But I also love the quote because it kinda come full circle because at the end she did found someone that she truly liked and she got liberated in a way.
Overall I loved the dynamic of each character arc they went into great depth so thats why I didn’t mind the slow paste because I honestly really liked the dialogue.
It was just a bunch of broken people trying to get their lives straight.

My *introvert-centric* MLN review: Loved it, loved the characters, didn't think the middle dragged at all. I especially like the (very long) stretches with no dialog at all. My favorite character was the elder sister (Lee El)... BUT I suggest you stop watching the finale about 15 minutes in and just make believe the rest of the episode never happened. The overall message seems to be that *minor spoiler* Personal liberation doesn't really work and its best if you just randomly attach yourself to an alcoholic or dying person to give your life meaning. My rating 4.5 out of 5 (5 out of 5 until the finale).

    • @johnhernan9238
      @johnhernan9238 2 года назад +1

loved the ling stretches of no dialogue also. The ending…. well my take away is that any and all relationships are their to help us grow as individuls
      to have the courage
take the next step…. but do not necessarily conclude by the relationship being “successful”. I think the brothers discussion with his ex illustrates this well. Learning to love yourself, even just a little, is the only
liberation (somewhat reminiscent of the monk character / relationship in My Mister? or maybe not)

    Finished today.
As expected, the best thing is the writing. Dialogues and contemplations were by far the highlight of the series. I loved the vast majority of them I also liked the humour.
This writer can tell a simple story about ordinary life in a poetic way.
Although I was very much interested in the characters' struggles, I can't say I was emotionally attached to anyone, which is rather an important drawback.
I also didn't feel the same level of satisfaction I felt with "My Mister" with the end. I don't mind open endings at all, but something was lacking here imo.
In terms of characters, I liked to watch the older sister the most, and I thought her acting was fanatstic.
The brother is the only one who had a genuine arc imo. He is the one who changed the most.
The younger sister is a weird one. I loved to listen to her, but at times she felt almost like not a real person.
Mr Gu..well. His biggest achievement is making Lee Jian sounds like a chatterbox lol
All in all, I still think it was a very good series, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to all "My Mister" lovers.
It is probably unfair to compare it to "My Mister", but I can't help it. For me it somewhere between 4-4.25

Hey Marie - i will try to avoid spoilers. once we finished the show (last night) i said “marie must have like this 😂”. so yeah we loved it - character development, character arcs (well finished in almost all cases) casting and acting are exceptionally good - all the way thru to background characters, people in office, in stores. I loved the fact that it is not urban (for most). The whole leitmotiv of trudging day by day step by step - figuratively and literally - punctuates the entire series. The writing as in My Mister is so good. I would disagree on one point - i don’t find in first episodes they talk too much - some do - but many of our leads are silent (i mean the father doesnt speak for almost 10 eps and Gu just speaks at end 😂). but yes there is a weightiness to the themes and dialogue. (father is excellent - he is also excellent in Beyond Evil, main family and love interests very good, the Liberation club members excellent etc). i did find a lull in pacing circa eps eps 8-11, was not overly enthusiastic about the yakuza style / back story in Seoul but why not. Cinematography and audiosphere (as you mentioned) superb and thoughtful. Comedic aspects not too Buster Keatonish or pie in your face so overall tone worked for me personally. it’s still not as heartwrenching as My Mister (although the funeral eps was very very good) but this in part has to do with how the two leads are portrayed - there is a gravitas (to the extent of being somewhat annoying in the beginning) that can be overwhelming until we put it all in perspective thru their story arc. Very satisfying, more adult themed show. Kudos to the writers and cast.

I really enjoyed it, but I agree with you about the slow pacing. If I compare it to My Mister, I definitely preferred the later. MLN was still very good, but if I were to rate them My Mister would be a 9.5/10. It's one of the best shows I've ever seen in my entire life, and I really loved the story, the characters, the plot, the acting. Just everything about it was basically perfect. MLN was an 8.5. It was really good, I liked the end, but the pacing wasn't as good, I liked the characters and loved some of them, but didn't connect to all of them the way I did to My Mister. I know comparing them isn't always fair, but it's kind of hard not to. Overall it was a really good show in its own right, which is why I think comparing them isn't exactly fair, but My Mister never dragged for me the way the middle of MLN did.

    Spoiler warning!
I enjoyed this series a lot, especially for its portrayal of realistic life and struggles. However, I think there were a few key elements that held me back from regarding it as highly as ‘My Mister’.
Particularly, I felt that the show suffered from a consistent lack of payoff/conclusion. It would constantly introduce new situations or conflicts, and then either move on without resolving them or do so in an incredibly quick and largely unimportant way. Is a lack of resolution, simply moving on, a reality of life sometimes? Absolutely, especially within a family. But for it to constantly happen feels both unrealistic and detrimental to telling a story about healing. Changhee repeatedly has outbursts against his father and mother? Doesn’t matter, it never affects them for more than a few minutes of screentime. Gijeong struggles to find acceptance from her boyfriend’s daughter and sister? Well, she tries but makes very little progress. Dohwan has a love interest? Yes, but only for half an episode. Mijeong gets involved in a whole affair situation? That’s not important because it just cuts away and she’s fired. Maybe most offensive of them all is Gu’s alcoholism, which is repeatedly shoved in our faces every single episode, including rage-filled violence and threats, yet is resolved in a thirty second scene. The only thing that might be more frustrating than that is how any issue between Mijeong and Gu is waved away shortly after it happens, as if there are no consequences to any of their actions. I understand that it’s Mijeong’s choice of love, but it just feels incredibly unhealthy for her to be wronged by him and still chase after him each time.
And that brings me to the time jump. Often, I have issues with time jumps in dramas (especially romance ones), because it tends to feel like an excuse to accelerate their character development without having to actually fully show it to the audience. This series did it better than some, but I still think it hurt the story a little. Converse to my usual issue with time jumps, the siblings feel like they just stagnate during the multiple years we don’t see, with only really the brother being slightly different. Pair that with the fact that the show doesn’t really telegraph the time scale of the show (seriously, there were few times when I actually knew how much time had passed between scenes or episodes), and it becomes really difficult to understand what the time jump was even intended to do other than stall the characters from reaching the end for a few more episodes. However, fitting my usual issue with time jumps is the relationship between Changhee and Hyeona. I thought they were obviously going to date from their first interaction, so I was incredibly surprised to see very little build-up to it. And then for them to completely skip their entire relationship using the time jump, it just ruins any sense of emotion or growth that could’ve been derived from it. We don’t see their time together, so their time apart and reuniting (whether as friends or a couple again) means absolutely nothing to us.
Ultimately, it feels like the writer is extremely well-versed in the mentality of ‘surviving’ and ‘healing’ in the real world. There are so many thoughts and struggles in the show that amazed me with their accuracy. Yet funnily enough, a show about healing from those struggles doesn’t feel like it really knows how to do that. So rather than tackle those solutions, it instead relies on the idea that healing always finds us, either through sheer fate/coincidence or some beautifully inspirational words from a character. It’s a cute message, but it conflicts with the otherwise very realistic tone of the show. Whereas ‘My Mister’ resolves itself by saying that people can come together to fix things, ‘My Liberation Notes’ dwells on the idea that if people come together, you seemingly don’t need to address the issue at all because it will probably go away or fix itself. Overall, it’s a really good show. I just wish it was bold enough to take a step beyond just acknowledging personal and world issues.

If you enjoy watching 5 or 6 adult people complain and lament about life endlessly, this is the show for you.
I've tried to take some time off from the teenage cringy love stories by watching this series, because you know I thought that it's an adult love story, but I was wrong, the two main leads are so edgy and cringy that it gives The Twilight Saga a run for its money.
40% of the dialogs goes nowhere and half of the characters are boring.
It's amazes me how kdramas manage to destroy anything they've built between episode 7 to 10.
